why is AI important?

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is when machines do things that normally need human intelligence. This includes learning, understanding language, and solving problems. AI is everywhere, from the recommendations you see on streaming services to self-driving cars on the roads. In this article, we'll explore what AI is all about and how it's changing our world.

What you just read above was in fact not the ‘real’ start to this article. That is because it was entirely written by an AI model called ‘ChatGPT’ which created the answer based on the prompt ‘Write a short introduction paragraph for a magazine article explaining what Al is,’ which at first was too complex sounding so I then asked the chat bot to simplify the response which is what created the answer above. The reason I started with this is to show how AI in its current state can be used in placement of a real person.

An AI model is created by advanced programing and, more importantly, receiving large amounts of ‘training data.’ Training data is the data that a model is given to gain knowledge and learn from. This will allow the AI to figure out how to replicate tasks and work. For example, a chatbot AI is fed a bunch of conversations between people and then uses those examples to learn how to talk like a real person. Once the AI has started to understand the information that it has been given, over time it will be able to make corrections to itself and become more advanced. This will allow the model to get better the more times that it’s used as it will be able to gain the feedback necessary to make those changes. The model is programmed with an intelligent algorithm in order to understand all the information that it is given, but it is important to remember that the model can only work based on the data that it is given. This basically means that without any data, the model can’t do anything. However, this also means that the more data an AI is given, the more advanced it would be able to become as it has more information to work off of.

AI allows us to advance our civilization quicker than ever before due to the fact it can process data faster than any human could. This will allow us to find solutions to problems at a rapid rate which can let us move on to even bigger and better things. AI can also allow for our lives to become a lot easier and simpler. This is because AI can be much more efficient than humans at certain tasks. For example, the algorithms used on your social media apps to give you the best content are all done by AI. It would take an infinite amount of time for a person to analyse everything that you’ve viewed and then determine what would be best to show you. As well as this, the model will be able to work 24 hours of the day as it doesn’t need to rest like a human.

However, it’s not all good. Due to how powerful and new this technology is, AI projects can get very expensive. Some could cost up to $9,000,000! As well as this, it will take time for the AI to advance. Although it can evolve quicker than most other things, it still needs some time to get better. Right now it can do a lot, but nothing to the point where it is actually changing how the world functions. It will get there soon, but there’s still some time to go before we get there.

With it already being hard enough to get a job, it might become near impossible soon as you will have to compete against Artificial intelligence.

AI technology is evolving rapidly and, due to this, it’s becoming better at replicating what us as humans can do. Whilst this sounds like it could be a good thing, many people are beginning to worry that they will end up being replaced by machines and left without a job. This is because if an AI machine is able to do the job of a person, then there will be no need to hire the person to do the job.

AI would be more cost effective in the long term instead of paying a monthly salary to a real person as you only would have to pay for the technology once and then you have it forever, so companies will be incentivised to want to use artificial intelligence instead of people. As well as that, AI is also capable of working all of the time. Unlike a real person, AI doesn’t need to take breaks or go to sleep, so it would be more efficient at its job than a real person which would give even less reasons for an employer to hire a real person. According to a 2023 report from Goldman Sachs, up to a quarter of all current jobs could be fully replaced by AI, and two-thirds of all jobs (300 million jobs) will be impacted by AI automation in America and Europe.

This alarming prediction could mean the end for a lot of people’s income, but what if it isn’t? There are ways that AI could end up being used for jobs that don't cause people to lose their money. One way to look at things is that AI could replace more manual labour jobs which would lead to the creation of more technical jobs. AI is good at replicating patterns, so for jobs that are repetitive AI could very easily replace them; However, it struggles a lot more with more complex jobs. So rather than AI replacing all jobs outright, the technology would shift our jobs to be more complex based rather than routine based. This could also end up creating new jobs that we haven’t seen yet. For example, the creation of the internet led to thousands of new jobs being possible that many people now work. The creation of AI technology may lead to another new wave of jobs being invented that would take the place of the jobs that AI replaces.

However, I wanted to get a more professional answer to this question, so I decided to reach out to Adam Jewitt, who is a senior leader at DELL Technologies, to see what a person who actually spends a lot of time with AI thinks.

He first told me that, “I think the answer when it comes to any question when it comes to technology is it depends and I think also nobody has any idea,” which shows that with any new technology, it is very hard to predict due to how new it is.

As we continued, Adam went on to talk about how confident customers that come to him are with this technology and where he thinks this will lead to, “The stuff that is relatively simple to do where customers are coming to us, they pretty much know what they want. I think over time, a lot of those jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence.” However, Adam did go on to explain why this won’t happen just yet, “I think at the moment you’ll see a lot of IT companies are reducing their workforce because they’re (AI) becoming more efficient, but actually a lot of people haven’t written the tools, so we are still at that early point.”

So it won’t happen for a while, but it does seem like some jobs will eventually disappear due to AI, but does this mean AI is all bad? Well Adam told me why AI is something that we still need, “it’s an essential technology, it will cure cancer, it will help banks and finance companies make more money, so it is an essential technology that is going to happen regardless of what anyone wants”, which is a statement that’s hard to disagree with. AI is definitely something that we need, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t have some negatives. However, Adam seems to be a lot more optimistic about this by ending this by saying, “I don’t think that we will suddenly end up with 10, 20% of the workforce not having jobs. I think it will change the way people do work. I think it will change the jobs that people go to.”

Content creation has rapidly risen in the last ten years to become the most desirable job, but just as quickly as it has risen, it might fall even quicker.

This is due to the advancements made in recent times. The biggest step forward has recently been made by the company “Open A.I.” who have announced a new model of artificial intelligence named “Sora.” This model allows you to create a video up to a minute long that can be completely A.I. generated based on a text prompt. This now creates the question of whether or not there will be a need for online personalities when A.I. can make videos by itself.

Obviously the technology isn’t at the point of replacing people just yet, but what’s significant is that the incredible videos that A.I. are capable of making right now the worst that generated videos will ever look, which means that they will only get better from here. If people were able to create any video they wanted, then what would be the point in watching someone else when it will never be as personalised?

In the initial stages the bigger creators may be fine as they already have a large following, but what about the smaller ones who don’t yet have an audience invested in them? This advancement in A.I. would make it nearly impossible to grow as a new creator as you wouldn’t be able to have the tools to compete against high powered machines. So, I decided to interview a small up-and-coming creator to get his thoughts on the recent developments in artificial technology.

I started by simply asking “How do you think A.I. will affect content creation in the future?” He responded interestingly by saying, “I think that in the future, AI will be the main thing creating content in the world, as people are getting lazier as the days go by.” This raises a very important point about the world getting lazier. Whatever is more convenient or easier is what people will usually end up choosing. If creating A.I. content can end up being on a similar level to regular videos, then it will take over as it will be both easier and cheaper than creating real content.

Following on from this, I asked “How much danger do you think A.l. is to replace a smaller creator like you?” Surprisingly, he seemed to be quite optimistic by responding, “Al is catered towards more mainstream things as of now, being a smaller creator, it doesn’t really affect me. It’s more of a benefit, but time will tell. I could very well be replaced by Al in the coming years, but Al could never perfectly replicate that of a human, so again, I’m pretty much fine.” Whilst A.I. is definitely a threat, it is a possibility that in the future people will begin to value real content more which could lead to a larger benefit for those who don’t give in to the new wave of A.I. technology.

Lastly, I asked “Do you think A.I. should be used for content creation and if so, how should it be used?” He gave a very important response, “Al is a good starter tool. I use it sometimes to create various backgrounds in my videos. But if I was to create a whole video with Al, it wouldn’t be my video. So yes, using Al can be used for content creation, but not to the point where the Al is making videos for you.” I think that this is the right answer to solving the problem with A.I. in the future. It is a technology that isn’t going to go away, so it does need to be embraced, but not to the point where it is replacing the work of real people. I think A.I. can be used as a tool to improve content creation, but will other people use it that way, or will they use it to just replace the hard work of others?

In the modern world, artists are struggling to make a living already. In the UK the average artist makes £37,000 per year, but now with artificial intelligence it seems like they may not even have any job in the future.

Let’s start with the positives of AI art so we can figure out why it even exists in the first place.

The main reason for AI art is convenience. Most AI models are able to generate images in less than a minute. This is obviously a lot quicker than if you were to draw anything that’s somewhat detailed by hand. Saving such a large amount of time can allow for more time being spent on other things. For example, if you were creating a magazine and needed an image to fill some space, then you could just quickly generate an image and place it in. This would allow you to spend way more time writing the actual article which, in theory, would allow for it to be better made. As well as this, it would let more people express their creativity. This is because not all people are able to draw images to a higher level of detail. However, everyone has the ability to describe an image they are thinking of and press enter on the keyboard to let the AI make the image. Now people who need images for their projects are able to create their own work and add it within minutes. This would also be more cost effective as they wouldn’t have to go and pay

If people were able to create their own images without needing to pay artists, then how would the artists make money? This is one of the major concerns amongst those who are against AI art. Many, if not all, artists could end up being replaced and no longer be able to make money from their abilities to create detailed artwork. And that’s not the only issue. The AI generating models work by being given data to learn from, but almost all of these AI art machines are trained from countless images taken off of Google. The reason this is a problem is that all the artwork being used to train the AI was work created by real artists who aren’t being paid or even giving permission to have their work be used to create an artificial model that could replace them. Unfortunately, there is no clear answer as to whether or not this is legal, as this technology is so new that there aren’t

copyright laws that clearly define what is and isn’t okay to do.

But are the AI models even good at making art? If they can’t even replicate work to the same level as real art, then there should be anything to even worry about. Well, in 2023, German photographer Boris Eldagsen wanted to solve this question. At the sony photography awards of that year, Boris submitted a photograph that was generated by AI and only told the award company to see if people would notice. The photograph ended up winning the award and Boris later stated on his website that he wouldn’t accept the award as his image was made artificially.

This showed that AI art has the capability, if done right, to not just be as good as real art - but better. However, Boris is still a professional photographer, and so he knew how to word things in detail to the AI to get an incredible image. but I wanted to see if a regular person would be able to fool people enough to not be able to tell the difference between AI and real photos. So, I went and created a few of my own and surveyed people to see if they could tell the difference between my AI photo and a real drawing that looks similar. From the quiz, people on average could correctly tell 5 out of the 6 images.

shows thatAI isn’t quite at the same level as real art just yet, but there are signs that it is getting close.Over time theAI is guaranteed to get better as it would have had more time to learn and improve, but is real art going to die out or will it actually rise in value as a result ofAI art taking over?Unfortunately, that is a question that only time will answer so we are just going to have to wait and see what happens next.

With the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in mainstream popularity, there has been a growing trend of panic amongst the public towards this technology. Many fear that it could ruin our lives, take our jobs and even replace us all together. But is any of this concern justified, or is it simply another case of moral panic for something different?

First, what exactly is moral panic?

Moral panic is when there is a widespread fear amongst people that something or someone threatens the values, interests and well-being of society. A good example of this is the ‘mods’ and ‘rockers.’ In the mid sixties, these were two subcultures of the youth, and people who were a part of it were believed to be dangerous and too rebellious. However, this was all because of a few cases of minor vandalism disturbances. So why did people fear this new subculture so much? Well it was because the media had greatly exaggerated the behaviour of these people to create more interesting headlines for people to read.

Now in today’s world, social media has taken over how people perceive things to be, so has AI been exaggerated in the same way through social media or is this concern actually justified? Well, unfortunately, the answer isn’t that simple. Artificial intelligence can provide many benefits to society. It allows social media algorithms to exist, it can learn at a faster rate than any human can and it can sort out piles of information in an instant. So AI definitely has a place in our society, but that doesn’t mean that there is no negatives with this new technology.

AI is trained on data that it is fed. This means that it will only be able to learn from the information that it is given. Now this could be a positive as it means that we could somewhat control the AI by not giving it the wrong information, however, this also means that someone could give AI a bunch of dangerous information and have it be trained from that. Therefore, AI has the potential to be very biassed based on the data that it is given. The reality is that it all depends on the person training the AI. Someone could give the model a bunch of medical information to try and solve the cure to multiple different diseases, but someone could also give the model a bunch of hateful information to make it harass people or discriminate.

As well as this, AI also could create many privacy and security issues. For example, in China they use facial recognition technology (which is created using AI) to monitor people from offices, schools and many other public venues. Besides just simply tracking someone's movements, the government could be able to use this tracking to monitor a person’s political views, activities and relationships. With this information, it would be easy for the government to punish those who don’t behave in the way that they want them to. This obviously takes away a lot of freedom from people as they basically would have to behave how they are ‘supposed to’ and not how they want to.

However, although this may seem like AI is in fact very bad, the problem is not necessarily the technology itself. Rather the issue is with how it is used and who uses it. The technology only works from the data given to it by a person. So the machines aren’t what you should worry about. What you need to ensure is that people use this technology for good. As long as a responsible person is in control of the AI, then there will be nothing to worry about. So the real problem that needs to be debated is whether or not people are responsible enough to use this technology.
