RESTAURANT AND RESIDENCY ARCH 211 - IDEATE SPRING 2023 P3 - RESTAURANT AND RESIDENCY PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Sharing a meal is perhaps the most universal of all human experiences. Through both its preparation and its consumption, food operates as an expression of cultural identity and tradition. At the same time, the choreographies of cooking and eating also produce a wide variety of spatial relationships. For the final project of the semester, students will engage with these cultural dynamics and spatial relations through the design of multicultural restaurant and residency. The residency will host a rotating cohort of three visiting chefs from around the globe, who travel to Lincoln for a period of one month to live together, learn from each other, and serve a collaborative meal each night for twenty guests. At the conclusion of each residency, another cohort of chefs will arrive to experiment with their own fusions of cuisine and culture. To accommodate these activities, students will design a building that includes a dining room for twenty guests and a professional kitchen, as well as three studio apartments with a shared private kitchen and living space for the visiting chefs. In addition to satisfying these basic programmatic functions, the building should re imagine the activities of cooking and eating through poetic and playful manipulations of architectural materials and details across a range of scales.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

CONCEPT DIAGRAM CONCEPT DIAGRAM

THE ENTIRETY OF OUR PROJECT IS TO SHOW THE MOVEMENT AND EXPERIENCE THROUGH A SPACE VERSUS THE STATIONARY EXPERIENCE THAT ONE WILL USUALLY EXPERIENCE WHEN DINING OUTSIDE THE COMFORT OF THEIR HOME. OUR INTENTION IS THAT INSTEAD OF FORCING GUESTS TO EXPERIENCE THE SPACE IN A SINGLE INTENDED WAY, THE DESIGN IS TO SHOWCASE MOMENTS WITHIN ITSELF THAT CAN ENHANCE THE EXPOSURE. THUS, GIVING GUESTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE THEIR OWN EXPERIENCE WHEN DINING THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF CURATED LIGHTING, AMBIANCE OF SPACE , AND THE MEAL ITSELF.

PRECEDENT FRAGMENTS ARCH 310 - ORGANIZE FALL 2023 P1 - PRECEDENT FRAGMENTS PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The fragment is a subject of rich discussion and debate within architectural discourse, often conjuring notions of incompleteness, loss, or ruination. Aside from their romantic and poetic associations, the partial nature of fragments presents a direct challenge to the presumed unity of architectural form. In this sense, the fragment reminds us that buildings are not abstract systems, but instead, complex assemblages of individual parts and pieces. Thus, the fragment can be mobilized as an imaginative lens to examine familiar works of architecture in a new way. For Project One, students will engage with the conceptual territory of fragmentation through an exercise of experimental precedent analysis. In contrast to traditional forms of precedent analysis, which typically emphasize organizational structures or diagrammatic abstractions of the architectural whole, this experimental approach foregrounds material components and tectonic languages. Through close observation of the assigned precedent’s details, joints, and finishes, students will extract a series of fragments that reflect the material character of the building.

MUSEUM OF VOLUMES ARCH 210 - REPRESENTATION SPRING 2023 P3 - MUSEUM OF VOLUMES PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Project 3 builds upon the formal and spatial investigations undertaken in the first two projects of the semester. Using this previous work as a starting point, students will design a Center for Architectural Volumes for a site in downtown Lincoln. This state-ofthe-art facility will house exhibitions, research, and educational programming. Its galleries will showcase a rotating curation of significant and innovative ideas focused on architectural volume and space, including physical and virtual representations. The Center’s research library will archive a permanent collection of architectural volumes that support the research of staff and visiting scholars. Additionally, the Center will host lectures and interactive workshops introducing visitors to architectural space-making’s history and development. Rather than starting from scratch, students are encouraged to pull directly from the volumes and spatial sequences developed in the first two projects of the semester. Fundamental dynamics to consider include the specific configuration of the Center’s spatial sequence (i.e., linear, non-linear, circular), the temporal pacing of this sequence (i.e., continuity/discontinuity, rhythm, speed), the transitions between spaces, and the composition of framed views. The experience of architectural spaces is kinesthetic- consider lighting, sound, temperature, smells, etc., as well as the overall role of atmosphere and ambiance in architecture.

PERSPECTIVE PORTFOLIO DSGN 120 - DESIGN DRAWING FALL 2021 PERSPECTIVE DRAWING OF ARCHITECTURE HALL PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

For this project we were tasked with observing an area within the College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and creating a series of drawings such as compositional studies and benchmarks of our chosen view and surroundings. I chose a view within the College of architecture that captures the history through the facade of the old College of Law building that is now housed inside the college of architecture through the link.

CORNHUSKER COMMONS ARCH 310 - ORGANIZE FALL 2023 P3 - MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

As the city of Lincoln continues to offer a diverse collection of living, working, and social experiences in its downtown urban core, developers are drawn to the area to take advantage of new economic development opportunities. This class will explore the functional development of an open group of sites near the State Capitol for a mixed-use project and its impact on the downtown architectural landscape. These sites are identified by the City of Lincoln Master Plan as supporting projects, but we will challenge the fact that this location may have greater impact on influencing the entry to downtown Lincoln and what importance that may mean to the solution. This project will entail multiple phases and ranges of study to execute an appropriate project for its surrounding context. A functional program will be developed and used as a basis of design to design a project to address the requests of the class client. This project could range from between 2 and 6 stories and include components of commercial/retail, residential, entertainment and office spaces and the associated parking requirements

CONCEPT STATEMENT MY DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON CREATING AN INVITING ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS PURSUING ARCHITECTURE AND LAW DEGREES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE DESIGN IS TO CRAFT INVITING AND EMPOWERING SPACES THAT PUSH STUDENTS TO EXCEL, AS WELL AS FOSTERING GROWTH AND SUCCESS.
