Shaping Tomorrow’s Educators: A Transformative Approach to Teaching at the University of the Cumberlandsby Joshua Matthews Kentucky Published on: 02/27/2026

Teaching in the Education Department at the University of the Cumberlands is more than delivering coursework—it is about shaping future educators who will influence countless lives. My teaching philosophy is grounded in authenticity, engagement, and practical preparation. I believe that aspiring teachers learn best when they experience the same dynamic, supportive environment they are expected to create in their own classrooms. From the first day of class, I focus on building a culture of trust and collaboration. Students are encouraged to share their perspectives, question assumptions, and reflect on their personal educational experiences. This open dialogue fosters critical thinking and helps them develop a strong professional identity. By modeling respectful communication and inclusive practices, I demonstrate the values essential for effective teaching. Practical application is central to my instructional strategy. While understanding educational theory is important, applying it in real-world contexts is what truly prepares students for success. I integrate interactive workshops, peer-led teaching demonstrations, and classroom simulations into my courses. These experiences allow students to practice lesson planning, classroom management, and differentiated instruction in a supportive setting.
