It is safe to say that a lot has changed since our last sale. 2020 has certainly not panned out the way anyone thought it would. Our world has experienced unprecedented change, but ever more astounding has been the resilience of people across the world, especially those who dedicate their lives to feeding the planet. In the spirit of resilience, we decided early on that we did not want the COVID-19 pandemic to stop us from hosting our 5th annual event. As soon as restrictions allowed, we were on the road looking for the best we could find. This year we have been stricter than ever, and as a result have consigned a slightly reduced entry of Herefords that is undoubtedly our best offering to date. We are devastated that we cannot welcome you to Shrewsbury this year. Over the last few years our event has developed into the pinnacle of the Hereford calendar, and we love nothing more than to see everyone enjoying themselves at our sale. But as always, the show must go on. Our focus has always been on bringing top-quality Hereford genetics to our sale ring, and regardless of the pandemic, 2020 has not stopped us from continuing this tradition. As you turn the pages of our virtual catalogue, you will see that both class and consistency run deep. Every lot has a balance of phenotype, performance, pedigree, and they provide further evidence that our vendors are wholly committed to selling their very best. The time, expense and dedication that it takes to raise Herefords of this calibre is immense, and we want to thank our consignors for the trust they put in us. We are in awe of you because the investment you make in your programs year after year is beyond commendable. In 2018, at our 3rd annual event, we broke the mould once again, offering 2018 Hereford Bull of the Year Coley 1 Pilot – the bull who went on to sell for a record breaking 13,000gns to Graham and Maria Shepherd. Not only did Pilot set records, he set the standard for any future herd sire prospects that would be sold at DGS. 2019 did not present us with animals of this standard, so we held fire, but 2020 doubled up and presented us with two. I was always told that you will recognise a future herd sire when you see them, well Tommy Lad (Lot 1) and Thame (Lot 2) did just that. Both these bulls have breed changer written all over them. We love a pick lot at DGS, and Lot 3 presents our most exciting one to date. Coley Herefords are offering the chance to pick any animal (male or female) from their herd solely owned by Coley. I would need another couple of pages to list the accomplishments of this program over the past decade, and they didn’t happen by chance, it happened because the quality runs deep at Coley.

Now this is how you start a sale! Ever since we sold Pilot in our 2018 sale, we knew that any bull we chose to follow in his footsteps had to ooze quality from every angle. As soon as I saw Tommy Lad this summer, I knew he did exactly that. This bull is the first animal to be sold from Moralee that includes both the bulls that propelled the Harrison’s herd to the forefront of the breed – Kingsize and Knightrider. Add to that the occurrence of Remitall Online 122L not once but twice in his pedigree, plus sires like Super Duty 42S, P606, High Voltage, Atlas and Storm, it is easy to see how this bull will go on to make his mark as one of the breeds dominant sires in coming years. The thickness, muscle expression and functionality in this young animal is a testament to the breeding program at Moralee, not to mention his Top 10% for IMF. We at Designer Genes take consigning bulls to our sales as a very serious confirmation of our belief in their potential. If you want to propel your breeding program to the forefront of this breed, invest in Tommy Lad on sale day, it’ll be the best return on investment you will ever make. Homozygous Polled.

You know you’ve found a great one when you’re stood in the field with the breeder and you come out with “Woah, who’s that?” – although I think when I saw this guy there was slightly more profanity. I have always been told that you know a future herdsire when you see one, and the moment I laid eyes on this calf I knew he had a big future. For a bull of this age to express such power and performance balanced with functionality and breed character by the bucket load. For a heifer’s first calf to wean at 420kg at 240 days is proof of the milk and maternal ability behind this bull. Sired by Solpoll 1 Nobility, arguably the most influential bull in the Rempstone program, Thame’s granddam is none other than 2016 National Champion Female Blakesley 1 Kimberley. He is Top 5% for 200, 400 and 600 Day Weights plus TI and SRI, so it is proven performance. We truly believe this bull will go on to be one of the greats of the Hereford breed. Pedigree, performance and phenotype – what more do you need?

Pick of the Herd lots always raise my excitement levels due to the potential they possess, but when I got the call from Coley offering this lot, I had to go a take a lie down. Coley have a long history at Designer Genes, being one of the few consignors to enter in all five of our events to date – and they’ve broken records in doing so. 2013 Reserve Female of the Year Coley 1 Bubbles 249 sold for 8,000gns in 2016, 2018 Hereford Bull of the Year Coley 1 Pilot went on to sell for 13,000gns in 2018, and Coley 1 Clara 418 sold for 7,500gns for 50% interest in 2018. But even more impressive is the impact that Coley animals go on to have in other herds, like Coley 1 Pippa (Royal Highland Show Breed Champion and donor female at Moralee) and Coley 1 Pilot (Herdsire at Moorside Polled Herefords and Sire of Lots 12 & 15). This lot offers you the chance to walk the fields at Coley and pick any animal solely owned by Coley – so whether you’re looking for a cornerstone donor female, a big-time herdsire or a future bull or female of the year, bid and buy Lot 3 on sale day.

BREEDING INFO - Sold with November born Auckvale 1 Victor 2048V at foot.

It was some years ago now when John told me they had bought a Polled bull from Dendor – I was instantly excited because I knew he would cross amazingly well with the maternal power of the cow herd at Auckvale. I was certainly excited, but blown away I think we all have become by the Polled herd at Auckvale. The Muttley bull has made his mark to say the least, and to see the proven cow families transition into the Polled side of the breed has been a pleasure and a privilege. Janet 1756R is our lead off female this year and for good reason. She is one of the most powerful females you will find, coupled with tonnes of eye appeal and breed character. Janet is a ¾ sister to the 2019 Royal Welsh Supreme Champion (Curly 1725R) who sold at DGS 2018 for 7,300gns. She’s also Top 10% for Milk. And the job of taking this female from heifer to cow as already been done for you, as she sells with her November 2020 born bull calf Auckvale 1 Victor at foot – so you can breed her straight back or start flushing in 2021. BREEDING INFO - Running with Gouldingpoll 1 Moonshine from 14/05/2020 to 15/08/2020. PD’d safely in calf. Every year the Jones family pick something extremely special for DGS, and I genuinely believe that this is their best entry to date. Sired by Royal Welsh Show Champion Bakgard 1 Keno, this female is one of the first Greta’s that Dendor have been able to part with, and the fact she is number 31 speaks volumes about the belief the Jones’ have in this cow family. Greta 31st is one of the most exquisitely made females I have ever seen, tailor made in fact! Her pedigree is stacked with breed legends – Keno, Gilbert, Otapawa High Voltage and Harvie Extra. She’s got performance too, being in the Top 10% for 200 Day Weight, Eye Muscle, IMF, TI and SRI. So, she’s got performance, phenotype, pedigree, and all backed up with one of the best cow families at Dendor – this is exactly the kind of female you can build your next cow family around. And just when you don’t think it can get more exciting, she’s bred to Moonshine, so the possibilities really are endless.

What a stunner! Your only chance at a Horned female this year and the fact it’s a Curly makes it even more exciting. If you were excited to design the perfect heifer then Curly 1831S is exactly what you would build – deep bodied, big hipped, easy fleshing, feminine and stunning locomotion; she has ‘breeder of the future’ written all over her. She’s got great calving ease numbers, a +17 score for Milk and a Top 10% breed indexes. Her pedigree is stacked with Auckvale giants like King Maker, Advance and Broadside. Watch the video and check out her femininity, plus her super cool markings and deep red colour – I watched it at least 10 times before I could even begin writing this. She’s safely in calf to outcross sire Ervie Classic S30, this mating really is the cherry on top of an exquisite female.

Dawn BL S48 is a daughter of former Sire of the Year Barwise 1 Lancer and out of one of the strongest cows in the Romany herd Dawn R22 D51 with two daughters retained, four daughters in pedigree herds (including Weybrook and Pulham) and two sons in pedigree herds – it does not get more proven than that. Now on to her phenotype which is simply jaw-dropping. She floats around effortlessly with stunning freedom of movement on solid feet and legs, plus exhibits great length, width and capacity throughout, plus she’s sweet, stylish and feminine. Her natural thickness really makes her a female for the future beef industry, and if the track records of her dam and sire are anything to go by then the future of this female is already written in the stars. Check out this little pocket rocket! Yet another stunning Lancer daughter, this time from the world-renowned Ishbel cow family. This female line has produced many of the current big names in the Hereford business, including Coley 1 Pilot (herdsire at Moorside) and Romany 1 Primetime (herdsire at Coley). Not only is this female by Lancer and from the Ishbel cow family, her dam is also sired by former Royal Highland Show Champion Romany 1 Heavyduty. Ishbel BL T2 is a tanky and meaty female that carries femininity by the lorry load, plus she is Top 10% for 200, 400 and 600 Day Weights. Designer Genes is all about females like this – females that don’t just stem from proven cow families, but females that we genuinely believe have the potential to push the breed forward and that buyers can build their own cow families behind – females like Ishbel!

Yes, you read it correctly, she’s a Jane! Jane 16th is one of the real power lots of the 2020 sale offering – she’s thick, wide, long and deep with unbeatable performance. I think her picture speaks for itself! The Jane cow family is become the most dominant cow family at Moorside, and Jane 16th is a direct granddaughter of Jane E66 (Former Polled Female of the Year). Her dam is sired by the great CCR Stamina and is one of the leading donors at Moorside. Her sire is the former Bull of the Year and DGS high seller Coley 1 Pilot that sold for 13,000gns at DGS 2018, and Jane 16th is his first daughter to ever be offered for sale. She is Top 10% for 200, 400 and 600 Day Weights and both breed indexes, plus she is Homozygous Polled! The potential in this absolute tank of a female is limitless and we look forward to following her future, you just betta make sure you can call her yours!

When I first saw this heifer at Rempstone I knew she had to come to Designer Genes. For a calf of her age to express such strong fleshing ability and capacity is just proof of her built-in quality. Curly D561 is the first daughter to be offered by sale by junior herdsire Gouldingpoll 1 Double Decker, a bull I can easily see reaching the accolade of Sire of the Year based on his first calf crop. Out of a Comply-or-Die daughter on the bottom side and stemming from the infamous Curly line, this female deserves to be in a donor program as soon as possible. She’s got performance too, being in the Top 1% for 200, 400 and 600 Day Weights. This heifer really is what Designer Genes is all about and we are honoured to have her consigned in our 5th annual event, all you need to do is make sure she’s coming home with you this Christmas.

Talk about show winning potential! This sweet, feminine and growthy heifer is a real eye catcher. She and her half sister (Lot 14B) are the first daughters of the 8,000gns Solpoll 1 Perfection to ever be offered for sale. Perfection was purchased by Spartan Herefords after winning Grand Male Champion at the 2019 Spring Show & Sale in Hereford. He has since gone on to place 3rd in the Hereford Bull of the Year competition in 2019. Out of a Ruckmans Orange female on the bottom side, this female exhibits stunning performance, being in the Top 5% for 200, 400 and 600 Day Weights, and TI and SRI. Her and her sister are like peas in a pod and only one of them sells, the best bit is you get to pick which one!

Trying to separate this heifer from her stable mate is a challenge in itself. Another stunningly sweet Perfection daughter, this time out a Dendor 1 Tia Tia daughter from the Eldersfield herd. Amy is Top 10% for all growth traits and breed indexes, and at only 10 months of age on sale day she already looks like a showstopper. She and her half-sister (Lot 14A) are the first daughters of the 8,000gns Solpoll 1 Perfection to ever be offered for sale. Perfection was purchased by Spartan Herefords after winning Grand Male Champion at the 2019 Spring Show & Sale in Hereford. Could there ever be a better way to end a sale than with the daughter of 2018 Bull of the Year and 13,000gns record priced Coley 1 Pilot. This female was the standout heifer from the 2020 calf crop at Moorside Polled Herefords. Not only is she sired by Pilot but she’s out of Motown daughter, meaning her pedigree includes Hometown 10Y, Firefly 65P (51F daughter) and Moeskaer Salute 994, and you can see how those genetics have worked wonders on this female. Julia is also in the Top 10% of the breed for Gestation Length too! The width and thickness in this heifer are to die for and she really packs a punch for a March born calf. Julia is your last chance on a heifer on December 19th, and what a way to end a sale with a Moorside stunner!
