Llarga vida al Fotosport!

Durant l'any tinc l'oportunitat de participar en nombrosos jurats de multitud de salons fotogràfics en diversos països, tots ells amb una bona organització i un prestigi merescut. Però quan em van convidar a participar en el jurat de FOTOSPORT 2016, per mi, va tenir un significat especial.

Fotosport és un saló de referència per la FIAP per la seva antiguitat, s'organitza ininterrompudament des de 1970, i per ser l'únic de temàtica exclusivament esportiva. Té, a més, la particularitat de ser organitzat per un club esportiu, el Club Natació Reus Ploms.

Però el que realment fa especial per mi Fotosport és que va ser creat i comissariat pel meu gran amic Enric Pàmies, que em va precedir en el càrrec de president de la FIAP des de 1995 i 1999, després d'haver estat també vicepresident de la FIAP. Enric Pàmies va convertir un antic concurs fotogràfic nacional en el que avui és un referent en el món de la fotografia de la FIAP com és Fotosport. Des de 1970 amb el seu treball incansable i amb una organització impecable aconseguí donar impuls a aquest prestigiós saló assolint sempre una gran participació i una qualitat excel·lent en les obres rebudes. Cal destacar la singularitat dels premis atorgats als guanyadors de Fotosport, unes medalles de bronze de disseny exclusiu per a cada edició que dóna més exclusivitat al saló.

Conscient del pas dels anys, Enric Pàmies va buscar a algú que després d'un període de treball conjunt pogués continuar amb l'organització de Fotosport, Així, el 1990 va començar a col·laborar amb ell Josep M Casanoves fins que el 2000 Enric Pàmies li passà el relleu i des de aleshores la feina començada fa 46 anys segueix endavant gràcies a aquest nou impuls.

Lamentablement Enric Pàmies ens va deixar el 2014 després d'una llarga vida impulsant i liderant els més variats projectes fotogràfics. Ens queda, però, el seu llegat i la seva memòria d'un treball ben fet, de la seva gran personalitat i d'una gran amistat. Encara que ell ja no hi sigui, la seva obra i la seva memòria segueixen vives en nosaltres.

Enric Pàmies was aware of the passing years, so he looked for someone to take over the organization of Fotosport after a period of time of coworking. In this way, in 1990, Josep M. Casanoves began working with him until the year 2000. It was then when Enric Pàmies passed on his lifetime project to him. Since then, the work initiated 46 years ago carries on´ thanks to this new thrust.

Unfortunately, Enric Pàmies passed away in 2014 after a long life developing and leading a wide variety of photographic projects. We have not lost the legacy he has left us, as well as a consistent and outstanding piece of work and his great personality and friendship. Although he is no longer here, his work and memory continue alive among us.

Throughout the year I have the opportunity to participate in several juries of many photography salons in different countries, all of which have a good organisation and a well-deserved prestige.

However, when I was invited to participate as a jury member of FOTOSPORT 2016, it had a special significance for me.

Fotosport is a reference salon for the FIAP because of its antiquity, its uninterrupted organization since 1970 and because it is the only one focused exclusively on sport. In addition, it has the particularity of being organized by the sports club Club Natació Reus Ploms.

Fotosport is really special for me because it was created and commissioned by my great friend Enric Pàmies, who preceded me as president of the FIAP since 1995 to 1999 and after having been vice president.

Enric Pàmies turned an old national photographic competition into what Fotosport is now, a reference in the world of photography of the FIAP. Since 1970, he provided a boost to this prestigious salon, thanks to his relentless work and perfect organization. His enormous effort resulted in the obtainment of a great participation and the reception of high-quality jobs.

It is imperative to highlight the singularity of the awards given to the winners of Fotosport: bronze medals with a unique design for each edition which undoubtedly grants more exclusivity to the salon.

Fotosport 2016 és per mi una edició molt emotiva i especial. Des de la darrera edició de Fotosport ens han deixat dues persones que van significar molt en la vida cultural de Reus i de Fotosport.

A final de 2014 ens deixava l’Enric Pàmies, una gran pèrdua per la fotografia però especialment per Fotosport. Ell va ser qui el va crear el 1970 i que el va comissariar fins el 2000, però fins la seva mort va estar sempre amatent a Fotosport, sempre va viure intensament cada edició, cada exposició.

Jo vaig agafar el seu relleu el 2002 però sempre vaig poder comptar amb ell per qualsevol ajut, consell, per tot. Mai vaig sentir estar sol davant Fotosport i recordo bé el feliç que se’l veia cada vegada que presentàvem una nova edició on no va faltar mai. És una gran pèrdua però sempre ens quedarà la seva obra i la seva memòria i de fet, Fotosport, segueix la línia que ell va començar en molts aspectes. Evidentment que tant la fotografia com molts aspectes organitzatius, el catàleg, la difusió, moltes coses, han evolucionat molt i internament són molt diferents a aquell 1970 en que va néixer Fotosport de la mà de l’Enric Pàmies, però la filosofia, l’essència, l’esperit segueix essent el mateix, unir l’esport i la fotografia en un saló internacional únic en molts aspectes, és el més antic del país, Catalunya, l’únic en el món reconegut per la FIAP de temàtica únicament esportiva, tot això i el bon fer de l’Enric Pàmies ha fet que Fotosport tingui un gran prestigi arreu dins el món de la fotografia.

Un altre aspecte que el fa únic dins el panorama dels salons internacionals són els premis. Des de la primera edició fins a aquesta els premis han consistit en medalles de bronze d’edició limitada i de disseny exclusiu en cada edició de la mà de l’escultor i gravador reusenc Ramon Ferran.

Malauradament a començament de 2015 ens va deixar en Ramon Ferran, gran artista i docent durant tota la seva dilatada vida. En el cas de Fotosport ens deixa un llegat artístic molt important amb dos gravats exclusius el 1990 i el 2010 per celebrar els 20 i 40 anys de Fotosport, però sens dubte, el llegat més important que ens deixa al nostre saló és l’extraordinària col·lecció de medalles de totes les edicions de Fotosport entre 1970 i 2016, vint-i-quatre peces exclusives, petites escultures, petites obres d’art que com dèiem es destinen a guardonar als guanyadors en cada edició de Fotosport.

Fotosport seguirà el seu camí però ens sentirem orfes d’aquestes dues grans persones. Des del sentiment de pèrdua que ara ens envaeix us emplacem a retrobar-nos novament presentant la propera edició, Fotosport 2018.

Another aspect that adds to Fotosports' uniqueness amongst other international salons and landscapes is the awards. From de first edition until today's, the awards have consisted in bronze medals of limited edition and exclusive design for every edition created by Ramon Ferran, a prestigious sculptor and engraver from Reus.

Unfortunately, Ramon Ferran, who was a great artist and instructor during his lifetime, also passed away at the beginning of 2015. As for Fotosport, he left us an important artistic legacy with two exclusive engravings in 1990 and 2010 to celebrate 20 and 40 years of Fotosport respectively. Undoubtedly, the most important legacy he left us is the extraordinary medals collection from all the editions between 1970 and 2016: 24 unique pieces, little sculptures and pieces of artistic work destined to reward the winners in every edition of Fotosport.

Fotosport will go on its way but we will certainly miss these two remarkable individuals.

From the sense of loss that overwhelms us, we encourage you to meet again by presenting the next edition: Fotosport 2018.

For me, Fotosport 2016 is a very emotional and special edition. Since the last edition of Fotosport, two people have left us who were very significant in the cultural life of Reus and Fotosport.

By the end of 2014, Enric Pàmies passed away, which meant a great loss for the world of photography and especially for Fotosport. He created it in 1970 and was its chairman until 2000, but, until his last days, he was very present in Fotosport.

He lived each edition and salon very intensely.

In 2002, I took over but I always could count on him for anything, either for help or advice. I never felt alone in the face of Fotosport and I remember well how happy he was when we presented a new edition, which he would never miss.

It is a great loss but his work and memory remain among us and lives on. In fact, Fotosport follows the guideline he began in several aspects. It is clear that some aspects such as photography, many organizational factors, the catalogue and the diffusion have evolved well and are internally different from those in 1970, when Fotosport was created by Enric Pàmies. However, its philosophy, essence and spirit remain the same: to join sport with photography in an international and, in many aspects, unique salon.

It is the oldest of the country of Catalonia, and it is the only one recognized by the FIAP which is based exclusively on sport. All this, together with Enric Pàmies' good work, has resulted in Fotosport achieving a great prestige throughout the world in the field of photography.

El vincle entre l’art de la medalla i el Saló Internacional FOTOSPORT neix des de l’inici del certamen quan, des de la seva primera edició el 1970 i per premiar els guanyadors i distingir el jurat i col·laboradors, FOTOSPORT va començar a editar una medalla de disseny exclusiu. Ramon Ferran (19272015) va ser l’artífex d’aquest vincle. Gravador, escultor i medallista, va tenir en aquesta tècnica un dels fonaments del seu periple creatiu. Ramon Ferran es va incorporar en la medalla l’any 1957 de la mà de Fernando Gimeno, aleshores cap del departament de medalles de la Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre. Més enllà de la utilitat o la funció que tradicionalment ha tingut la medalla, ell sempre la va considerar com una autèntica peça d’art. Aquest era un suport amb què s’hi sentia especialment còmode. De reproducció múltiple com el mateix gravat (l’altra tècnica amb què va excel·lir), feia que la medalla fos més assequible i per tant facilitava que qualsevol persona en pogués gaudir. Això encaixava perfectament al seu anhel que l’art es popularitzés i no estigués només en les mans de les elits culturals i econòmiques. També, el seu format reduït, que demanava un codi simbòlic molt elaborat i que exigia un relat clar i entenedor, s’adaptava perfectament al seu treball creatiu.

L’ús del tema esportiu per part de Ramon Ferran no es limitarà només en la seva col·laboració en el FOTOSPORT, sinó que serà un tema recurrent en el seu treball, i no només en l’àmbit de la medalla, sinó també en el del gravat. Des de finals de la dècada dels anys seixanta i principis de la dels setanta, la figura humana, amb tota la seva càrrega simbòlica i amb les diferents maneres de ser representada, monopolitzarà temàtica-

ment el seu treball. En aquest context creatiu, l’esport serà un més dels vehicles a través dels quals s’endinsarà a fons dins de la simbologia del cos humà. L’esport, com a paradigma de l’esforç i el moviment, li permetrà submergir-se dins d’aquests aspectes de la naturalesa humana. La primera obra que realitzà amb temàtica esportiva va ser el 1964, la medalla per al I Salón Latino de Fotografía Deportiva, on Ferran ja presenta la base del que serà el seu treball en aquesta temàtica: l’acció aturada de la figura estilitzada de l’esportista –en aquest cas en el moment que el nedador penetra a l’aigua –. Ramon Ferran, exceptuant algunes peces, sempre vincularà l’esport al moviment i especialment a tres modalitats esportives més o menys genèriques, l’atletisme –l’home en acció de córrer–, la natació –en el moment de llançar-se a l’aigua o penetra-hi– i el futbol (una de les seves passions). En les seves medalles també apareixeran altres esports (hoquei, les motos, l’esquí...) però sempre sense continuïtat i buscant el treball sobre el moviment. El 1973 va realitzar diversos relleus de bronze (que no corresponen a cap encàrrec i que tenen un format entre la medalla i el baix relleu) on clarament estudia el moviment en l’esport (la natació, l’atletisme i el llançament de disc). Però serà FOTOSPORT qui monopolitzarà la seva obra de temàtica esportiva. Entre el 1970 i el 2010 va realitzar vint models de medalla centrats en una de les passions humanes, l’esport, contribuint a estrènyer el seu vincle amb l’art.

the medal for the I Latino Salon of Sports Photography, with which he would present the basis of this thematic area: capturing the motion of the slender figure of the athlete – in this case, when the swimmer dives into the water -. Except for some of his pieces of work, Ramon Ferran always linked sport with motion. He focused on three different kinds, which are more or less generic: athletics – people running -, swimming – people diving into the water or penetrating the watery surface – and football (one of his passions). Other sports also appeared in his medals (hockey, motorbikes, skiing…), and so he always looked for art of motion. In 1973, he did many bronze reliefs (which did not correspond to any assignment and had a format between medal and low relief), where he clearly studied movement in sport (swimming, athletics and discus throw). However, FOTOSPORT would be the one to monopolize his work related to sport. Between 1970 and 2010, he created twenty models of medals focused on sport, one of humankind’s passions, contributing to the strengthening of its link with art.

The link between the art of medals and FOTOSPORT International Salon was born in 1970, when the organization started editing a uniquely designed medal to reward participants and also to distinguish the jury and contributors. Ramon Ferran (1927-2015) was the creator of the medal. He was engraver, sculptor and medal designer, and these were the main cornerstones of his artistic career. In 1957, Ramon Ferran began working in the world of medals guided by Fernando Gimeno, who was head of the medals department in the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre. Beyond the traditional use and purpose of a medal, Ramon always considered it as an authentic piece of art, a pillar of his work which he felt very comfortable with. He excelled at using a multiple engraving technique, which made medals more affordable so that anyone could enjoy them. This fitted perfectly well in his desire of making art more popular and accessible to everybody and not for cultural and economic elites. In addition, its reduced format fitted perfectly into his creative work: it was necessary to develop a symbolic code with a clear and understandable message.

Ramon Ferran not only worked the concept of sport during his collaboration in FOTOSPORT. It was a recurrent theme in his work, both in his medals and engraving. From the late sixties to the beginning of the seventies, his work was thematically monopolized by the human figure, imbued with all its symbolism and its many ways of being represented. In this creative context, sport was one of the means to deeply explore the symbolism of human body. Sport, as a paradigm of effort and motion, allowed him to look into these aspects of human nature. In 1964, he created

La medalla de Fotosport 2016 és una obra pòstuma ja que l’artista va deixar el model fet abans de la seva mort i sobre aquest model s’han fos les medalles acabades.

Recordem què dèiem de les medalles en el llibre Fotosport 2010, 40è aniversari:

The medal of Fotosport 2016 is a posthumous piece of work because the artist completed the designs before he passed away, so the final medals were smelted on the basis of this model.

Let's remember what we said about medals in the book Fotosport 2010, 40th Anniversary:

“Per premiar als guanyadors i distingir els jurats i col·laboradors FOTOSPORT ha editat any rere any les medalles FOTOSPORT, de disseny exclusiu per a cada edició. L’artista reusenc Ramon Ferran Pagès ha creat una nova medalla cada edició inspirant-se sempre en el tema esportiu. Segons ens diu l’artista la medalla contemporània s’ha convertit en una escultura múltiple. És a dir, podem considerar les medalles FOTOSPORT un petita escultura, una petita obra d’art. Aquestes medalles són un tret distintiu de les nostres biennals”

“Fotosport has edited year after year its FOTOSPORT medals with an exclusive design for each edition to reward the winners and to distinguish the jury and contributors. Ferran Pagès, an artist from Reus, has created a new medal for each edition always inspired on sport. According to what the artist says, the contemporary medal has become a multiple sculpture.

In other words, we can consider FOTOSPORT medals as a small sculpture, a small piece of art. These medals are a distinctive sign of our biennials.”
