ORIENTATION AND FORM

BUILTFORM

The building is oriented towards west, backside facing the beach. Its positioned and formed along the shape of the contour to maximize the use of each contour to enhance stability.

The building is placed parallel to the site contour without disrupting the contour shape. The rooms are formed such that it rests inside each stepped contours.

APPROACH AND SERVICE ZONES

VERTICAL CIRCULATION

LOCATION AND NEIGHBOURHOOD CONTEXT Overlooking the Lakshadweep Sea | 11 minute walk from Kovalam Beach | 7km from Sagariga Marine Research Aquarium.

Good location for sight seeing, recreation, dining, getting around.

APPROACH Oblique angular entrance of the front part of the hotel enhances the building appeal towards the highway.

Service spaces like kitchen, storage, office, etc. are placed facing to the service road for easy access.

Access to the building is from the road on the East side and therefore many service areas like Kitchen, storage, etc. are positioned facing that road.

The building circulation is from top to bottom,which helps in easy evacuation during time of flood or tsunami.

SOLVING THE SLOPE

CIRCULATION

CULTURE AND VERNACULAR STYLE Although the design is contemporary and is not directly derived from local forms, except for the beach centre pavilions which are lightweight bamboo chatris.

The buildings refer to the vernacular with the plastered white walls, red manglore tiled roofs, and sundeck. The interiors utilise light furnishings, matting on the floors and simple Indian crafted finishes.

VEGETATION

The circulation throughout the building is from top to bottom enabling the easy movement and site responsive circulation strategy along the contour.

There are a lot of coconut trees in the site that gives a scattered light and shadow to the deck.

The load from the structure in each level is easily distributed towards the stepped contours which helps in stabilising the structure.

Breeze from the sea enters in equal amount into each room through the sundeck openings but there are no cross ventilation or outlet opening for air to escape.

All bedrooms on the slope are provided with sundecks which give direct view to the beach and the sea which brings in ambience into the room.

Only the sundeck area recieves direct sunlight in a room due to limited openings and therefore there is need for artificial lighting.

Located in Mexico, the structure covers an area of 245 sq. m.

SITE AND BUILT RELATION The site is covered with numerous trees of which none of them were destroyed to construct the house and therefore the structure benefits from the topography taking full advantage of the views and respecting almost all the existing trees.

BUILTFORM

There are a lot of openings or fenestrations in the building which allows entry of bright light and gives aesthetic views of the forest.

The stone and concrete walls clearly define the heart of the project: a linear courtyard that from the entry runs towards the small oak forest at the foot of the ravine. The stone for the walls were obtained from the rock hill on which the structure itself is placed.

CANTILEVER STRUCTURE

There is transparency along the full stretch in a direction of the house which connects all the spaces together visually along the same axis.

MULTILEVEL CONNECTION

ROOF FORMATION By partially covering the central area a simple slab generates an indefinite space that solves the garage, forms a terrace towards the west, transforms the roof of the social volume into a solarium and breaks to connect both volumes with a linear staircase. The wooden roof also emphasises the freedom of the interior spaces

The access and approach towards the structure is through the road along the hill curved into the entrance. The entrance view connects the all spaces together through glass walls.

VISUAL CONNECTIVITY

Constructed as two levels located at different heights, so that each one works as an independent piece opened towards the vegetation and landscape, one private and one social, which float over the ravine that covers the terrain.

MATERIAL

ENTRY AND APPROACH

The two flights of stairs connects the two cubical spaces.

The cantilever over the water runoff was solved with a box beam generated when gradually turned the wall containing the private volume until transforming it into a slab.

Two cuboidal boxes for spaces allows to split the functions of spaces according to use.

The PUBLIC ZONE is for gatherings for friends, hangouts, parties, etc. whereas the PRIVATE ZONE is used by the user alone for working, sleeping reading, hobbies, etc. And it is the space for daily activities of the user.

The cantilever helps to utilise maximum area for built area on a small contour level area.

PULIYARAKONAM SITE 8°32'21.5"N 77°01'44.4"E The site is located 700m away from Puliyarakonam Ward, Nemom Panchayat, Trivandrum District, Kerala. The neighbourhood context is slightly populated residential areas and nearby town. The people here are religious with mostly christians.

Crows feed on fallen fruits and animals. They and other birds droppings fall on the groundcover or on built structures

Cats wander around the site looking for food like small animals or insects.

Dogs are local ones which wander into the site looking for food and also somewhere without heat.

Cows are owned by the nearby residents. They feed on low plants for food and the cowdungs are good fertilisers for the plants.

Ants are mostly present along with mango trees as they make nests inside mango leaves

Grasshopper are found among the green ground cover plants and also among shrubs.

Moths feed on fluids from sap flower on trees, rotting trees, bird droppings, etc.

Butterflies come for flower nectars or tree fluids. They beautify the landscape

MARSHY SOIL EFFECTS

When water gets clogged in certain areas ie, mostly in wide flat areas where there is less slope to allow runoff of water, the soil gets marshy and highly moistured.

Even though water logged areas brings coolness to the area, there are some adverse effects to the soil: ANALYSIS Proper drainage lines should be provided at frequent intervals to reduce water logging in the site.

This soil is not suitable for any construction since sinking occurs for the soil in its marshy form and even a walking person can slip on this soil.

Therefore the soil should be cleaned and the drainage should be managed before using these areas for construction.

DRAINAGE, SOIL STUDY Water drainage is towards 2 directions ie, East and West since the slope is decreasing towards both these directions. In East, the water drains into the bottom canal present outside the site.

Since this is a contour site, during rainy season waters logs in flat areas. There small animals and microorganisms cluster in for water and thus creats a small bio-diversity. This also creates small cooling areas during the day time.

The slope in this region is steep and therefore allows easy runoff of water leading to very less water logging.

Many insects, algea and fungus comes around these area making the place unfavourable and foul smell arises. Even logged water produces mosquitoes in the site.

Soil texture varies according to

regions where there is logging of rainwater and less logging of rainwater since soil becomes moist and marshy where there is more water content.

MEDIUM TEXTURE

LATERITE SOIL is the most found soil in the site which is good for construction in the solid stone form.

Laterite soil is found in 3 types:

GRANULAR SOIL has least amount of humus and the soil granules are the largest compared to other 2 types.

Water Absorbtion rate is the least since the water takes a lot of time to percolate down through the large soil granules.

The soil type is not very good for cultivation or gardening of plants

FINE TEXTURE

NATURALLY COMPACTED SOIL Comparatively less humus content and the soil granules are larger than mushy form soil.

Water Absorbtion rate is comparatively low since the water should percolate down through the big sized granules.

DRAINAGE PATTERN

MUSHY HUMUS SOIL has many nutrients that improve the health of the soil and is the best soil for plants and gardenings since it has high humus content.

Water absorbtion is high since suction rate is more when in mushy state therefore this soil is again good for plants A defect is that the rubber trees in the site depletes the nutrients in the soil when they are overly grown.

Therefore they should be logically maintained.

CONTOUR RELIEF

There is a canal present in the east side adjacent to the access road for the water sunoff from the site to fall.

Also the canal prevents the excess flow of water into the site during floods.

Noise from the nearby Puliyarakonam town since the town is crowded and there is a lot of traffic.

Even there can be noises from nearby temples or churches during worship days or celebrations.

THE CONCEPT

SOLID - VOID RELATIONSHIPS Classrooms has intermediate green buffer zones in the form of courtyards, open classrooms or pathways with vegetations which regulates the ambient circulation for students and teachers from one place to another

MULTI-LEVEL CONNECTED SPACES The Main Block consists of three levels on each side which are such as they are connected with a middle courtyard and bridge spaces and also vertical connections throughout the three levels.

STAGE + SEATING CUT AND FILL SLOPE MODIFICATION CASE STUDY INFERENCE : LEELA HOTEL, KOVALAM The slopes are modified for the insertion of the main block structures as a deep scoop of land taken out and filled with the blocks in different levels. Such a modification helps in utilising even the most slope regions of the land.

SUSTAINABLE CONTOUR SEATING AND LEISURE ZONES The stage and the adjacent seatings are along the stepped contour at the West end of the site which makes the sustainable contour modification of minimal excavation usage for seating.

Also there are walkways and park zones along the east end of the site which creates a sense of walking pathway focus for children without any modification of slope.

PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH OF KG BLOCK The KG classrooms are of larger size and they have open classroom system in between two classes and creates a direct connection between two classrooms through green space which acts as the open class.

Upon reaching the top 102nd level the pedestrian gets the enlarged view of the curved with ashlar masonry cladding wall of the admin block with a cantilever structure of which the underpass acts as the main pathway to the campus.

Also the view of the terrace garden of the Lab gives an extra touch of ambient feel to the pedestrian

The covered pathway leads to the campus entrance through the entrance of the admin block and it enters into a curved enclosure formed by the cantilevered wall of the admin block which is made by ashlar cladding jali wall and brings in filtered light to create more ambience into the entrance of the admin block

A person who travels up through the driveway from reaching the 100th level, gets the welcoming view and scents of the blooming garden area accompanied with the Science lab. The beautiful sight and ambience provided by the butterflies and the flowers here creates the best welcoming experience for a student or a parent.

Further moving into the campus through the pathway we could see and feel the energy of the most interactive group of spaces like the KG playground, football field, game court, seating under the trees and the amphitheatre. Thus the entrance of the campus can be seen as an entrance to the liveliness and energy of the school as a whole.

Coming to the end of the pathway leads to the football field accompanying the game court like badminton, basketball, etc. and the students in the interactive zone and who are resting under the shades of the tree seating could watch the game while they are at it.

-The parks along the contour is a visual treat for the people looking at the school from outside as well as inside since it gives the pleasant and energetic sight of children playing.

-The contours are modified to step-like contours and pathways and steps are arranged along the stepped contours for easy movement for children.

-There are paved pathways on each alternate contour levels of 50cm height.

The entrance into the main block is facing a green courtyard with steps and ramp and the floor made of metal grill through which trees are grown to make it come upto the level of top floor providing fresh cool air and filtered sunlight into the whole building.

-From the football field access pathway there is a direct staircase down into the open class space between two adjacent classrooms.

-This space has furnitures of organic shapes, textures and are seated under trees to provide shade while the open class is going on.

-The adjacent classrooms has a very good view towards the East side of the site where there is paddy fields to create a visual treat.

MATERIAL PALLETTE ASHLAR MASONRY CLADDING WALL brings the rough touch texture and also gives a reddish tone to the school building.

The hard relief as well as the slight reflection of the cladding wall makes each space aesthetic upon the falling of sunlight on its surface.

EXPOSED CONCRETE acts as the contrasting material to the Ashlar cladding walls and also gives a natural touch to the interior and exterior walls

There are terrace balconies for the classes facing the East side where the children could get out and do activities or enjoy the view of the paddy fields and village sight towards the east side outside the site.

STONE PAVERS WITH GRASS gives coolness to the pathways while walking and therefore the students dont feel all tired up fast while walking through the pavers.
