Elta Joyce Murphy McAfee will forever be praised for her contributions and desire to see the arts continue to hold a place in San Angelo. All who have the pleasure of experiencing a play, symphony or ballet at the historic City Auditorium, which reopened its doors in early October 2017 after being closed for about eight years, do so at the Elta Joyce Murphey Performance Hall and Stage at City Auditorium, named in her honor and family’s legacy.
The Aduitorium aesthetics were completely restored by Amy Linemann. She restored, painted, stenciled, plastered, sculpted, carved, caulked, reshaped, molded, bonded, and casted every ornate fixture, cornice, medallion, and trim made out of plaster and paint from ceiling to every wall in the entire auditorium on a 50 ft. Lift and scaffolds wearing a harness and a hardhat every day! That’s quite a job to bring the past back to a vibrant andbeautiful status.

RACE
Today, the San Angelo Rodeo is a PRCA and WPRA sanctioned event open to cowboys and cowgirls across the world that are members or permit holders of What does it mean that we to participate? It means that looking to get their first big win get opportunity right here, while many other rodeos only take the top end cowboys in the world standings. Everyone starts somewhere, so why not San Angelo?
The rodeo features rough stock events such as bull riding, saddle bronc riding, and bareback riding, as well as timed events like team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, and women’s barrel racing.
Another unique feature of San Angelo is our crowd. West Texans love rodeo as much, if not more, than any other group of people, and they know what a good rodeo is. This is one of the only, if not only, location in the world that tie-down ropers get a louder cheer from the crowd than a bull rider. The fan base truly understands the work cowboys and cowgirls put into this career and stand behind them completely.
For the past 14 years, on oneSaturday in May, Oakes Street gets shut down. Lawn chairs and umbrellas are set up in the roadway as 10,000 or more people attend the Simply Texas Blues Festival.
The San Angelo Stock Show was established in 1932 as an opportunity to promote Agriculture to West Texas Boys, and eventually girls. The show started with cattle and breeding sheep classes and the market shows were referred to as “fat” shows. Since then the San Angelo Livestock Show has grown to be one of the largest junior shows in the nation. This even features over 40 different contests, competitions, and events for youth including cattle, swine, sheep, goats, llamas, and rabbits; there is something for just about everyone!
Though the foundation of the show has remained the same, it has evolved into a major show production. Students from across the State of Texas compete for massive prize monies, banners, buckles, and a spot in the coveted premium sale.
Besides livestock, the show features ag speaking and mechanics contests as well as robotics competition.
The inaugural San Angelo Rodeo was held in 1934, three years after the first “fat” stock show. Rodeo in those days differs greatly from what it is today, but one truth holds true: San Angelo hosts a rodeo.
Currently held in the Foster Communications Coliseum on the San Angelo Fairgrounds, the San Angelo Rodeo Committee is proud to offer attendees one of the best true rodeos that spectators can find today. San Angelo prides itself on offering a quality event from contestants, to stock, to production, and so on. Sure, there are some lights and smoke to make the event a true production, but what we offer is a rodeo.
The daylong event features performances by several blues bands and solo acts competing for a chance to advance to the final round of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
The festival is put on by the San Angelo Blues Society, which was established to promote, teach about and preserve blues music. The organization also awards music scholarships for local musicians to attend Angelo State University
The drag boat engines roar to life, drivers watching the flag before they take off, racing on the waters of Lake Nasworthy.
The race runs on a west-to-east course in a channel that allows spectators to find spots along both sides of the lake, at Spring Creek Park and Grassy Meadows.
Pro and Sportsman boats are featured in the races, some moving up to 250 mph and throwing water 50 feet in the air.
Showdown in San Angelo is now in San Angelo in June and September at Spring Creek Marina.
Many communities put on big 4th of July celebrations, but A Star Spangled Banner event has the largest firework show in the area. The concert takes place at the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial RiverStage and draws more than 25,000 people. The concert includes live music and a firework extravaganza. The concert includes a selection of patriotic music along with Fort Concho cannons firing.
Gates open for the event at noon and community band begins playing at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at dark. General admission is free, but reserved seating is available. For more information contact joe@ hyderinteractive.com or info@dtsa.org
make living here unique and fun and should be added to
Kick off the holiday season by visiting Fort Concho’s largest annual event. Held during the first full weekend in December, Christmas at Old Fort Concho transforms the fort’s forty acres and twenty-four buildings into a winter wonderland. Each day at Fort Concho visitors can experience the Winter Rendezvous, campsites with hundreds of re-enactors and period traders who bring the 1800s to life. During daylight hours the many troops on the Parade Ground will drill, ride, and shoot their weapons. The artillery demonstrations (blanks-of course) will definitely catch your attention! Inside the fort’s many original buildings, merchants and artisans from across Texas and the Southwest offer many items to start your Christmas shopping. A Food Court will offer various food options; strolling musicians and staged musical activity will keep the grounds lively, and the Children’s Areas will provide many crafts and activities free for all youngsters.
cards and over two million lights. In 1998, community radio station KCSA-97.1 FM offered holiday music through a community radio station to enhance the experience of those driving through the tour.
The Concho Christmas Committee added new lighted scenes and accessories each year. “The Tunnel of Lights”, one of the most dramatic Concho Christmas attractions, was completed in December 2001. Hirschfeld Steel designed and fabricated the hundred foot-long tunnel which continues to be a major signature feature. Dubbed “Community Hosts,” business and volunteer groups now became actively engaged in Concho Christmas Celebration. Throughout December, the hosts serve as greeters, passing out candy canes and collecting donations from guests.
2001 featured the first “Lights of Christmas Parade”. To supplement the parade the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony moved from the River Stage to the corner of Chadbourne Street and Concho Avenue in 2004.
By 2006, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was declared complete with the purchase of “Two Turtle Doves, Three French Hens, Nine Ladies Dancing, Eight Maids a Milking and the Twelve Drummers.” Also in 2006, Concho Christmas joined forces with the San Angelo Lizards to offer a non-competitive run through the light display. The event gained popularity and was labeled “Run Rudolph Run.”
Another partnership blossomed as First Christian Church offered a live nativity scene presentation during three weekends in 2007. During that same year, community radio station KCSA 95.7 FM, which had been airing holiday music, expanded into year-round programming (now KCSA 97.1 FM) broadcasting music of the 1950’s as well as community concerts provided by the San Angelo Symphony and the Angelo State University Chorus.
In 1994, a Christmas Lights Walking Tour was presented to the San Angelo community in the El Paseo de Santa Angela area featuring several minor lighted scenes. In 1995 twenty-one sponsor Christmas greeting cards were added. In 1996, the opportunity to expand the event developed with a new and permanent home along River Concho Drive. The tour thus evolved from a walking tour to a driving tour.
In 1997, the Concho Christmas Celebration Opening Ceremony took place at the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial River Stage. The ceremony featured performances by the San Angelo Community Band and student choirs from the San Angelo Independent School District. The Concho Christmas Light Tour now displayed seven major and twelve minor lighted scenes, twenty-four lighted angels, forty-six lighted decorations, thirty-six sponsor Christmas
Today, the Concho Christmas Tour of Lights is a 2.5-mile drive along the banks of the Concho River and lit by over three million lights. Visitors remark that lights reflecting on the river appear to duplicate the amazing displays.
Presently, Concho Christmas Celebration has become a cherished tradition with locals and visitors alike.

San Angelo, Texas, boasts a rich tapestry of religious diversity with a wide array of churches that reflect the vibrant cultural and spiritual mosaic of the community. From historic, steeple-topped structures that have stood for generations to contemporary places of worship, the city offers a multitude of choices for spiritual seekers. Whether you’re drawn to the solemnity of a traditional cathedral, the lively congregations of charismatic churches, or the intimate gatherings of smaller faith
communities, San Angelo embraces all faiths and denominations. The city’s churches not only serve as places of worship but also as centers for community engagement and support, hosting events, outreach programs, and fostering a sense of belonging for residents and newcomers alike. San Angelo’s diverse churches contribute to the city’s inclusive and welcoming atmosphere, inviting everyone to explore their faith and connect with others in a spirit of unity and fellowship.
We are a Christian congregation where believers of all ages and backgrounds are united in their belief that God loves all people and wants to have a life with them through faith in Jesus.
God’s everlasting love for us that is found in the death and resurrection of Jesus is preached and taught among us each Sunday and on other days throughout the year in worship and Bible study. We gather together to hear of God’s mercy and forgiveness; to lay our burdens before him in prayer, to thank him for all his blessings and tender mercies; and to encourage one another in our faith.

We would love for you to become part of our church and school family and join us in sharing the love of Christ with our neighbors here in San Angelo and indeed, throughout the world.

Pastor Brad Griffin assumed the Lead Pastor role on August 14th, 2023 and while this is a new pastor for the church, Pastor Griffin is all too familiar with San Angelo and SAFCN. You see he grew up in San Angelo but after a 12 year departure, he has returned to his hometown.
Pastor Griffin originally moved to San Angelo in 1981 when he was just four years old. His parents, David & Linda Griffin moved here from California and made San Angelo their home. Some of you may know his father David from the years that he spent at Mustang Chevrolet and later with Jim Bass Ford.
Pastor Griffin is a 1996 graduate of Central High School where he met his wife, Kristen (also a ‘96 CHS graduate) whom he married in 1998. Pastor Griffin and Kristen have two children who were both born here in San Angelo. Their youngest, Zachary, is now a Sophomore at CHS and their daughter is a Junior at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.
The Griffin’s left San Angelo in August of 2011 to pursue his calling into the ministry to begin his degree in Pastoral Ministries at Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, CO. After six years in Colorado, the Griffin’s moved even farther north to take on their first pastorate at Encounter Church of the Nazarene in Kenmare, North Dakota. However, they are now back in San Angelo to take on their new assignment of pastoring San Angelo First Church of the Nazarene, the church that he and his wife grew up in during their time here.
They are excited not just to be home but to continue doing what the Lord has called them to do. “We are humbled, honored and privileged to not just be back in San Angelo, but to be shepherding a church that means so much to us, with people we love and a community we love as well!” says Pastor Griffin. For more information, please contact the church office at the number below.

In the heart of West Texas, lies our oasis known as San Angelo—a city that thrives in the present while honoring its rich history and celebrating family-friendly traditions.
San Angelo, surrounded by the rugged Texan landscape, is an unexpected haven of greenery and tranquility. The Concho River meanders through the city, creating lush parks and serene views. Nature’s contrast with the parched plains is a testament to San Angelo’s unique charm, as if the city were a sanctuary carved by time.
But the true magic of San Angelo lies in its culture and family-friendly atmosphere. The historic downtown, with its century-old buildings, tells stories of the past. Boutique shops and local eateries breathe new life into historic facades, creating a charming blend of old and new.
San Angelo’s vibrant history comes alive at places like Fort Concho, where the Old West spirit still resonates. Families gather in the fort’s courtyard for picnics, children wide-eyed as they listen to tales of cowboys and pioneers. The city’s diverse cultural heritage shines at the Railway Museum, a place where the legends of railroad builders are cherished.
But at the heart of it all are the people of San Angelo. Friendly neighbors greet each other with warmth, and newcomers are welcomed. The community thrives on togetherness, with festivals and events that bring everyone beneath the West Texas sky. The riverfront bursts with music festivals, and the annual rodeo fills the air with excitement and the irresistible scent of barbecue.
In this oasis of culture and camaraderie, families build their lives and create cherished memories. Children play by the river, and parents share stories on porch swings during lazy evenings. San Angelo is a place where everyone knows your name, where family and community are valued above all else.
San Angelo stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Texas—a place where history, culture, and tradition flourish in the present. In this oasis of life, love, and unity, every day is a celebration of family, community, and the deep roots that bind them together.
