KOI KIMONO HANILY

Heidi, thank you for sharing your journey with us. Could you tell us more about the inspiration behind your collections at Hanily Design?

The inspiration behind Hanily Design comes from a deeply rooted personal place. After the loss of both of my children, I realized that we no longer had a legacy. Creating Hanily became a way to honor my children’s memory by combining both of their names, Hana and Billy , and create something meaningful. Each collection is a tribute to love, resilience, and the beauty of life helping to tell a story that connects with the hearts of those who wear Hanily.

Your story of resilience and love is incredibly moving. How has your personal journey influenced the designs and ethos of Hanily?

My personal journey has profoundly impacted the way I design and what the brand represents. Love goes into everything I do from the very point of fruition to the final launch of our products, reflecting my determination to create something beautiful in the midst of chaos. This journey has taught me to appreciate the beauty of life, moments of joy and recovery from loss, which I strive to capture in every part of the process. Hanily is more than just another brand, it is a celebration of life, courage, and the enduring power of love.

Your kimonos are described as wildly imaginative and inspiring. How do you approach the creative process when designing each piece?

Designing each kimono starts with an initial idea and I envision that in my head and start to tell the story through the process. Starting with a concept or emotion that I want to express, often drawing inspiration from nature, art, and personal experiences, and experimenting with colors, patterns, and textures to bring that vision to life. Every piece is crafted with attention to detail, ensuring it captures the essence of Hanily 's imaginative and free spirit. I love seeing our kimonos come to life after so much thought, sampling and attention to the smallest of details. It’s a process, but I believe anything worth doing requires dedication and love.

“My personal journey has profoundly impacted the way I design”

The iconic two wings of Hanily hold significant meaning. Could you share with us the story behind this symbol and its representation in your brand?

I love our wings and to me they symbolize freedom, protection, and the fact that we are not alone. Our wings remind me of my children, who are now my angels, guiding and inspiring me from above. It is a reminder of their presence and a mother’s love that will live forever. It embodies strength and grace that helps to guide me in every aspect. Our taglines “Spread Your Wings” and “Come Fly with Us” is impactful when people start connecting the wings with our brand presence.

Hanily Design is known for its unique prints exclusive to the brand. What are some of the sources of inspiration for these prints?

After being so monotone in my color palette with design for so many years, I am finding new inspiration in the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of the world around us. Each print is designed to evoke emotion and tell a story, making every piece a wearable work of art. Take for instance our KOI …I had a love for fish early in my life, at one point I think I could account for six aquariums in my home. My dream to have a koi pond one day helped inspire me in the making of our best seller, the KOI kimono.

The Kimono Lab by Hanily sounds like a space for creative exploration. Can you walk us through the process of developing new patterns and designs in this lab?

At the onset of launching Hanily Design I became obsessed with our kimonos. I knew this was going to be the start of something beautiful and I could not have thought of a better name. “The Kimono Lab by Hanily” is a creative platform that knows no bounds, where ideas flow freely, and inspiration is gathered to experiment with different fabrics, colors, and techniques. Ideas come to fruition when the samples are created and refined as

needed until I see the perfect balance of wildly and sometimes quirky and innovative designs on our kimonos. This free-flowing process ensures that each design is unique and true to the Hanily spirit.

Your mission to inspire and bring smiles through fashion is touching. How do you ensure that this mission is reflected in every aspect of your brand?

I love that people worldwide are wearing our brand! It takes a lot of effort, time, resources and monetary sacrifices but the result is amazing. I do believe listening to your customers, friends and clients help to improve and delivery a unique product by focusing on quality, creativity, and meaningful connections. Each design is crafted with love with a keen attention to detail, aiming to bring joy and inspiration to those who wear Hanily . Our commitment to giving back through charitable initiatives further reinforces our mission to spread positivity and make a difference.

Collaboration seems to be an integral part of Hanily's ethos. Could you share some memorable collaborations and what they brought to your brand?

I think my middle name is collaboration! So indeed, a core part of Hanily 's ethos is working together. I get to know those I partner with, whether it’s my local outreach or my overseas partners, connections are important to nurture and grow the brand. I share my story with them so that they understand Hanily is not just another brand on the rack, that we are a legacy of love. I try to learn about them as well…who they are, valuing their opinions and feedback to further enhance production in the most successful way. So, collaboration and connections with a caring approach is the core of Hanily Design .

As a designer and owner, what challenges have you faced in building and growing Hanily Design, and how have you overcome them?

The growth of Hanily has come with its fair share of personal and monetary sacrifices to stand out in a very competitive industry. And

yes, there have been quite a few setbacks, but I see them as opportunities for personal growth and that is empowering! Working hard has always been my nature and balancing a fulltime job in corporate America, maintaining and nurturing personal relationships, an occasional dip in the culinary world along with feeding my soul of Hanily requires passion and commitment. Balancing time is super important in every aspect of life. But when you find that balance its that “sweet spot” worth discovering. Nothing is ever too difficult to achieve if you work hard, have a good outlook and overall keep the faith. You can do great things with a little faith in yourself and others.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. How does Hanily Design incorporate sustainability practices into its operations?

Sustainability works with the collaboration of like-minded individuals and smaller companies to produce our products so that our partners can prioritize ethical and ecofriendly practices over mass-production. By maintaining limited quantities, we help our partners refine production processes, reducing excess waste and minimizing the risk of excess product ending up in landfills. Our designs are timeless and made to last, encouraging customers to invest in pieces they will treasure for years rather than discard of after a single season.

Hanily is available both online and at select boutiques. How do you maintain the brand experience across different platforms and locations?

Maintaining a consistent brand experience across different selling platforms and locations is essential for the growth of Hanily. Online presence, social media, and engaging customers and clients is crucial, timeconsuming but also gratifying. I realized a while back when the kimonos started selling that I needed to partner with boutiques that I would want to do business with and carry our brand. Offering wholesale or consignment opportunities with select boutiques was key. Customers encounter the same experience when wearing our brand, knowing we are

not mass-produced and the story behind Hanily Design. I also like to engage clients and customers on social media as much as possible. I believe in uplifting others, and in the process it´s key to evolving any brand that wants to be known for more than just a high price tag. Your journey of self-discovery led you back to your love for fashion and design. How do you continue to nurture your passion and creativity in your work?

One Word – Time. I nurture my passion and creativity by making time for it, staying curious and open to new experiences. Traveling when I can, exploring different cultures, and engaging with other artists and designers keep my creative spirit alive. I also take time to reflect on my personal journey and the emotions that drive me, using them as fuel for inspiration and new ideas. This ongoing process of selfdiscovery ensures that Hanily remains vibrant and evolving.

Could you share some insights into upcoming collections or projects that Hanily Design has in the pipeline?

The Kimono Lab by Hanily will offer some new prints for our exclusive kimonos. There is so much to evolve in as it relates to new designs. We are exploring opportunities for our customers to create their very own kimono by selecting their fabric of choice and trim. It’s a win-win situation, so stay tuned for more on The Kimono Lab by Hanily . And while weather in Florida allows for us to wear dresses year-round, the obsession with the maxi-dress will continue for sure. The Black Dress Collection will shine bright like a “diamond” (key word there), timeless and classic, you can never go wrong with a black dress.

Giving back seems to be a core value for Hanily Design. Can you tell us more about the charitable initiatives and donations that your brand supports?

Helping others is important and the essence

of the heart of Hanily . Everyone has a story. Some of those less fortunate do not have the capacity or means to better their lives and our communities are suffering. We need to do our part to keep being “a good human”. My children were both givers and that is the driving force of our charitable efforts. These initiatives allow Hanily to make a meaningful impact to those less fortunate and honor the legacy of my children.

We are loving the designs and colors from Just Beach Me Collection, tell us more about this new venture!

It’s a fun one! I mean, who doesn’t love the beach? It was one of those typical nights when my mind wouldn’t rest, and I was just thinking “just beach me” anywhere. This venture has so much potential it’s crazy. It’s like just beach me to Ibiza, just beach me to Turks and Caicos, just beach me to St. Tropez, just beach me to the California Coast, I mean the world is our oyster! The possibilities are endless to grow the Just Beach Me Collection and the opportunities to partner with others in this venture outside of Hanily Design .

Looking ahead, what are your hopes and aspirations for the future of Hanily Design, both creatively and ethically?

Hanily Design is more than just another brand. It has been the rebirth of my soul, a way to keep my children's legacy alive and continue our story. Creatively, I aspire to keep pushing the boundaries of fashion, exploring new ideas, and crafting pieces that inspire and resonate with people all around the world. I am committed to deepening sustainability and using available resources to achieve this with my partners, both local and overseas, along with expanding our charitable initiatives to include a more global outreach. Hanily is me, my children, a love that will always be, representing hope, resilience, and the ongoing quest to bring more love and positivity into our world.

BANGELLE ELEGANCE & INNOVATION

In the world of luxury jewelry, few names resonate with the elegance and innovation that define Elle Pirmoradi 's brand, Bangelle . As the founder and designer, Elle 's journey from an apprenticeship at a prestigious Beverly Hills jeweler to establishing her own brand is nothing short of inspiring. Her time at UCLA laid the groundwork, but it was the handson experience in the jewelry business that ignited her passion. Embracing the many facets of the industry, from design and production to sales and customer service, Elle 's vision began to crystallize. "Creating my own brand years later gave me a sense of absolute freedom. You don’t answer to anyone but your own sense of aesthetic. That is a creative person’s dream," she reflects.

Elle 's designs are a testament to the rich tapestry of experiences she's gathered from living in diverse cultural hubs like Berlin , Los Angeles , Paris , and Bangkok . These cities have not only influenced her aesthetic but have also instilled a universal appeal in her work. "I strove to create universally beautiful, timeless, ageless and unisex high-end bangles that make sense in all of these locales and more," Elle shares. Her ability to merge cultural elements into her designs while maintaining a distinctive style has positioned Bangelle as a brand that transcends geographical boundaries, offering pieces that are both innovative and timeless.

Founder & Designer

BANGELLE

Founder & Designer

Elle, can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to create your own jewelry brand?

While completing my studies at UCLA , I began an apprenticeship at a prestigious Beverly Hills jeweler. It was during this time that I knew I wanted to take my passion for jewelry to a professional level. I absorbed the many facets of the art and business; beginning with the design, production as well as sales and after-service. While learning the skills of the trade, I attended trade shows and met many wonderful people along the way. I realized that’s it, that’s my calling. At this point of course I was fulfilling other people’s visions. Creating my own brand years later gave me a sense of absolute freedom. You don’t answer to anyone but your own sense of aesthetic. That is a creative person’s dream.

How did your experiences of living in cities like Berlin, Los Angeles, Paris, and Bangkok influence the designs of Bangelle?

Getting to know and appreciating the different cultures surely influenced my work. In a way it makes the world smaller and you realize that people overall are more similar to one another than different. We long for the same things and get pleasure from similar sources. All over the globe we appreciate good food, music, nice weather, art, beauty, jewelry… Of course what we consider good is greatly influenced by culture but that’s a different question. I strove to create universally beautiful, timeless, ageless and unisex high-end bangles that make sense in all of these locales and more.

I wanted to create the ideal addition. Bangles are also unique in that you don’t have to pick and choose what you want to rock, unlike earrings or rings to some extent. Bangelles you can layer, the more the merrier! Lastly, it’s unique for a luxury brand to focus on one product exclusively. I found my niche and I’m making it bigger and better.

Can you explain how the golden ratio is incorporated into your bangle designs?

My eye resonates with symmetry and angularity. I don’t sit down and think now I will design a piece based on the golden ratio; it’s rather an innate sense of beauty and allure to which we respond. It’s defined by ideal proportions in many aspects of life. In nature we see it in the formation in spirals and flower petals, it plays a crucial role in architecture, facial attractiveness, art, mathematics… I’ve always been intrigued by this idea of universal beauty, that occurs both in the human-made and natural realm. Who am I to argue with nature?

“I strove to create universally beautiful, timeless, ageless, and unisex high-end bangles”

What challenges did you face when launching Bangelle in 2022, and how did you overcome them?

Challenges are meant to be overcomed, they test our commitment. Patience is perhaps the biggest one. When creating a new collection, I typically start with paper and pencil, oldschool. Translating this into 3D renders and crafting samples can be daunting; at that point you’ve already seen the new pieces in your mind for a while but the production process naturally takes time. Perfection isn’t a speedy process. Once you touch and feel the pieces, the wait is well worth it though. Your vision literally turns into tangible elegance.

What inspired you to focus exclusively on bangles for your jewelry line?

Bangles hold a special place in my heart. One, the feel and sound of a stacked wrist is simply wonderful. There’s something bold yet understated about a stack. Second, I found there to be a void for innovative bangles that compliment the staple pieces of the renowned maisons. When working on the first prototypes, I envisioned the perfect stack and

How do you ensure that your bangles remain timeless yet innovative in design?

Fine jewelry is timeless and when you think of how it’s often cherished by multiple generations, it becomes priceless, too. We use only the finest materials and all pieces are meticulously handmade by masterjewelers in Los Angeles . Being innovative, meaning to introduce something new, comes with the territory of creating. Bangelle

is a line dedicated exclusively to bangles and bracelets. Sometimes an inspiring idea for a new design just pops in my head. Sometimes I draw inspiration by looking at a stunning wristparty and I seek to make the perfect addition. Both, being innovative and complimenting other pieces are at the core of what we envision.

Could you describe the process of crafting a Bangelle bangle from start to finish?

Typically, I start off with paper and pencil. Sometimes I see exactly in my mind what the piece will look like, and all that’s necessary is for it to emerge on paper through my hands, almost on its own if that makes sense. Other times, creativity needs a little boost and you doodle until you get an inspiring idea. My initial sketches are generally in a 1:1 ratio. We specialize in bangles, therefore drawing them in the actual dimensions makes the process straight-forward and avoids surprises later on. Once the perfect piece exists on paper, we closely work with a network of artisans in Los Angeles to create the 3D renders. Based on this we make the final adjustments and then it gets to the really exciting part: awaiting the first prototypes!

What role do local artisans in Los Angeles play in the creation of your jewelry?

They play the crucial role of transforming my vision into reality. As the chief designer, I’m the creative force and we work with local artisans in bringing the vision to life. In an automated world, our clients value the fact that each piece is handmade, and it’s done so locally. We could produce in many locales around the world, at a lower cost. But just like valuing the weight of our pieces, our clientele appreciates the fact that a Los Angeles -based high-end jewelry line stands by the name by having the actual manufacturing done locally. The city's casual yet luxurious charm definitely had an impact on our aesthetic. Your bangles range from dainty women’s models to the substantial models like the BigBang. How do you balance aesthetics with practicality?

Our pieces are meant to be worn dressed

up or down, from morning through a night out on the town. So, practicality is a must. A good design is only good if it’s also practical. Having said that, our models come at a variety of different weights. Our latest pieces feature dazzling diamond pavé options and are lighter yet solid gold, always. Our heaviest item is our extraordinary BigBang, which comes in at about a hefty 110 grams of 18K gold. Love the look? It comes with some weight! Fortunately, our clientele value the feel of it. Further, with gold prices rising continuously, aside from being wearable luxury, the heavier pieces are a great investment. Win-win situation.

How do you want people to feel when they wear a Bangelle bangle?

Great question and a highly subjective one. For me, great style has an element of effortlessness. This sense of aesthetic is heavily influenced by the California lifestyle. Casual chic, a little understated at times and a bit looney in the best sense. Think of a nice watch and how it makes you feel put-together, regardless of the outfit you’re rocking. My creative vision is to achieve a similar feeling with our wristcandy. Bangelles are solid, strong and stunning, an extension of the person wearing them so to say. The best reaction is when I hear clients say “I can’t imagine my stack without them anymore!” Jewelry is a very individualistic expression of who we are and how we present ourselves to the world. I want our clients to feel like the best versions of themselves.

Can you tell us about your personal favorite Bangelle piece and why it’s special to you?

That’s a tough question. As a designer, I’m in love with all the pieces that move from prototypes to manufacturing. Having said that, the Uni holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the earlier pieces, it’s unisex and just a perfect piece of jewelry. When I envisioned creating the brand, this piece was at the core of it. I wear one in rose gold every day. Attention spoiler alert: we’re working on a new design called the Abacus. As the name suggests, there are moving balls and it just looks superb. The first samples feature white and champagne diamonds. This design is quickly advancing

“I want our clients to feel like the best versions of themselves. ”

ABLA SOFY INFLUENCER

to become a favorite as well. The heart wants what it wants.

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of running your own jewelry brand?

First and foremost is the creative freedom you get to enjoy when it’s your show. It goes far beyond just designing beautiful pieces, needless to say that creating a stunning product is the basis for all that follows. Bringing your very own vision to life is priceless. Especially when it looks this good. Also, your level of motivation is unmatched when you’re following your passion. You have this drive to share with the world what you see. Shared happiness is double happiness! Mathematically speaking impossible but it couldn’t be more true. What advice would you give to aspiring jewelry designers looking to start their own brand?

I’d say try to find your own niche and make it special. Find what you’re passionate about, envision it, develop it, and improve it. As a designer you naturally love everything you create; but often designs ripen over time, in a sense they need to simmer. That process can’t be rushed. Play around with prototypes and ask yourself if that’s the best version of your initial idea. There are no shortcuts when it comes to jewelry.

How do you stay inspired and keep your designs fresh in a competitive market?

Our philosophy is that flawless design and quality prevail. That’s the essence of Bangelle . You have to convince your clientele with original designs. It all starts with that. This goes hand in hand with pristine craftsmanship.

Our clients love the fact that all collections are handmade locally. Yes, the luxury segment is a highly competitive field; Los Angeles is a very creative place and it attracts talent from around the world. Seeing other brands doing well is motivating, and when you’re playing with the best, you get better yourself. You can look at competition as a threat or as a challenge, I happily chose the latter.

Can you share any memorable stories from customers who’ve worn your bangles?

Many of our clients are repeat offenders. They start off with a piece they add to their stack and discover the rest of the line after. Last year, my client’s husband was looking for an anniversary gift for her. He was the sweetest and carefully considered which bangle would suit her best. The fact that he told me he opted for Bangelle over a famous nail design was the icing on the cake. That was a wow-moment. While he found one for her, he ended up getting himself one, too. He tried the Uni, he looked at it and as the sun stroke the perfectly fitting bangle, he said “sexy shackles”! Yup, agreed!

Lastly, what’s the one message you hope Bangelle communicates to its wearers and the world?

As our name suggests, I endeavour Bangelle to become synonymous with luxury bangles. A staple piece for jewelry connoisseurs who love a stacked wrist. Personal style is the first way we communicate to the world who we are. Dare to be different, and do so looking your best. Bangelle stands for impeccable, unique designs paired with immaculate, local craftsmanship.

Wendy, can you tell us about your early musical influences and how they shaped your career?

U2 and Bono have always been a major influence on my music. Their depth, sense of purpose, activism, determination, talent, and ability to keep their finger on the pulse throughout the decades is unmatched. U2 has stayed together through thick and thin, and is as relevant today as when they started. Their music has been pivotal in my development as a musician and my respect for them is immeasurable.

Sting and The Police have played a major role in my development as an artist. Sting’s ability to play with time signatures between the verses and choruses of his songs is masterful. People don’t realize the technical abilities of the musicians they love because many don’t understand traditional song structure and what goes into making a hit song. Sometimes I wish that music was additionally credited with a category called “Degree Of Difficulty” – like it is in the Olympics . What Sting has been able to achieve musically is nothing short of mind blowing.

I have certainly incorporated the influences of both of these bands into the music I write for myself and for others – both structurally and melodically.

Who were some of your musical mentors, and how did they impact your development as an artist and producer?

I was born and raised in New York City . My parents are extremely ambitious and hardworking, so they set a great example of the work ethic required to achieve success. I got my start in music with my childhood babysitter who was like a second mother to me, Rosetta Attkins . She influenced me the most as a singer. She was a gospel singer from the south, who basically became my second mother. She taught me how to sing by imitating the voices on the gospel radio station she listened to - both men and women's voices. By the time I was 6 or 7, I had learned several techniques of how to use my voice and was able to choose the sound I wanted to distinguish myself, so I started writing songs on the piano.

“Working with Moby was a phenomenal experience”

What was the turning point in your career that led you to pursue music professionally?

As a teenager, I was pulled up on stage by James Brown 's saxophone player, Maceo Parker , during one of his concerts and scatted on his stage for 20 minutes. After I was done, Maceo ’s bass player got down on one knee as if he was proposing, took a string off of his bass guitar and coiled it up around my ring finger. He hushed the crowd and said into the microphone, “ Wendy , from this day forward you are married to music. You have a gift from God.

You must devote your life to using this gift or else you will deprive the world of something so special.” I got the chills. It was written up in the newspapers the next day. I made the decision in that moment to focus my life around music forever.

My grandfather was a painter and sculptor and my family trained me to follow in his footsteps - unlike my uncle who was a guitarist who played alongside legends like Bruce Springsteen and opened for acts like The Allman Brothers and Black Sabbath . My father played classical piano and I was influenced heavily by the melodies I heard in those compositions by composers like Mozart , Brahms , Beethoven and Rachmaninov .

You have worked on some remarkable projects, like Moby's Grammy-nominated album. What was it like collaborating with Moby, and how did that experience influence your music?

Working with Moby was a phenomenal experience. He is such a deep soul, has a strong work ethic, and is a creative force. Did you know that he produced one of David Bowie ’s records? He is a legend and is one of the most licensed artists in history.

Moby had a great studio in his New York City apartment which was a really comfortable and tranquil setting to create music together. He started off with 300 song sketches that he produced and whittled it down to the 14 that were on the album. It is a great testament to his dedication and mastery of his craft. I was

so happy that I made the cut!

My recording sessions with Moby for the album Last Night inspired me to think outside the box and explore writing new genres of music – in particular, electronic music. What do you think sets apart a great song from a good one?

Lyrically, I think a great song is mastered by taking a universal subject matter we’ve all experienced before, and being able to tell that story in a brand new way. Many artists use certain lyrics repeatedly and can’t find new words to tell their story. Same holds true for certain melodies that are repeated from one song to the next. Many people believe that those copycat songs will be hits because they will sound familiar to the public.

People want authenticity. They can feel when a song or artist is manufactured. That is why trendy artists typically have a short shelf life. Artists who are authentic in their expression, stand the test of time. That is what legends are made of.

You played a crucial role having been the person to discover and developing Lady Gaga. Can you share that journey with us? What initially drew you to her talent?

Gaga and I were performing on the same bill the night that I discovered her at The Cutting Room in New York City . I was instantly impressed with her enormous stage presence. It was like a lion - fierce, hypnotic, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. What made it even more impressive was the fact that all of the elements around her were not of her high caliber, yet she overcame and surpassed all of the challenging conditions in an exceptional way. She had star quality and I knew it instantly. The timbre of her voice, the precise pitch, and her confidence that filled the room was all encompassing. She had the raw talent and I knew that myself and the team could help to refine it and package it to a wide audience.

I had a specific agreement with my production partner who asked me to search for a female artist under the age of 25 who had the characteristics to be the female equivalent to the lead singer of The Strokes . Someone who was edgy, bold, energetic, confident. Someone you can’t take your eyes off of. That was Stefani Germanotta (now Lady Gaga ) to a tee. I attended about 50 live shows and searched for over 8 months before discovering Lady Gaga .

There is a lot of incredible talent out there, however, talent alone isn’t enough. Being a great singer doesn’t matter if you’re not singing great songs. Having great songs won’t be obvious to record executives if they are not professionally produced. Consistently performing those songs extremely well is essential. Having an undeniable stage presence and never quit attitude are necessary requirements. Taking constructive criticism from others is required to get to the next level. Knowing how to market yourself and your press materials is key. These things don’t happen overnight. Every artist that becomes famous has a team and needs to convince someone to believe in them enough to have others rally around them to achieve stardom. If I can be that person, then I’m happy to do it.

Lady Gaga and I wrote songs together and strategized about the project to build it into a cultural phenomenon. I never could have expected that the success of this project would have turned into a global brand - but that was certainly the goal and was always in my sights. I will consistently try to swing for the fences. I may not I always get a home run, but I will repeatedly give my best effort to make my dreams into a reality.

I could not be more proud to have played an important part in the worldwide success of Lady Gaga .

What qualities do you look for when scouting new talent?

“I could not be more proud to have played an important part in the worldwide success of Lady Gaga. ”

Discovering and developing talent is typically a long process. You are looking for the diamond in the rough who has something unique and different, knowing the value you can add to it. My strength is in songwriting and in seeing the holes in the marketplace that need to be filled, and then filling them. At the time when I discovered Lady Gaga in 2006, dance music was not prevalent. All of the biggest acts were sweet and safe. I knew that bringing talent to the world that was edgy and bold would draw attention and set off alarms. It is this kind of creative risk-taking that has the ability to blaze a new path in a highly populated and competitive music industry.

My production partner asked me to search for a female artist under the age of 25 who had the characteristics to be the female equivalent to the lead singer of The Strokes. Someone who was edgy, bold, energetic, confident. Someone you couldn’t take your eyes off of. That was Stefani Germanotta to a tee. I attended about 50 live shows and searched for over 8 months before discovering Lady Gaga. We wrote songs together , strategized about the project, and was able to capture her core audience. It was so exhilarating! I was watching all of our ideas become a reality. She was awarded Billboard ’s “Album Of The Decade” for her album The Fame . She is a 13-time Grammy , Oscar , and 2-time Golden Globe winning icon. I could not be more proud to have played a vital part in the worldwide success of Lady Gaga .

How do you balance nurturing an artist's unique style while guiding them towards commercial success?

It is crucial to fully explore an artist’s range and abilities before writing and producing for or with them. You must determine what is unique only to them. Many times it will be in the tambor of their voice or in the way they pronounce words when singing. As a songwriter and music producer, it is my job to preserve the flower and cut the weeds so that the audience who is hearing the artist for the first time will be taken aback by what makes this artist special. Then you must take that special trait and build an entire sound around it. Create an album

and an image that represents and reflects that artist’s unique trait. This is how greatness is achieved, as well as great commercial success – through authenticity.

You've been honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame and named VH1's Best Emerging Artist. What do these accolades mean to you personally and professionally?

Being honored by the Songwriter’s Hall Of Fame and being named Vh1’s Best Emerging Artist are unforgettable moments in my career that I will treasure for a lifetime. Professionally, these achievements gave my work credibility that allowed me the privilege to work with some of the biggest names in the music history. I am grateful that these achievements have helped to cement my place in the music industry.

What was it like opening for icons like Sheryl Crow and Jack White?

It was incredibly thrilling to open for icons such as Jack White and Sheryl Crow . It is a huge rush of adrenaline to sing for thousands of people on the same stage as artists you’ve looked up to your whole life. A mind blowing experience!

What has been the most challenging aspect of your career, and how did you overcome it?

Overcoming the changes in the structure of the music business has been challenging. The music business used to have greater margins and both artists and industry executives made significantly more money than they do today. When you are not thinking about survival, it creates freedom to explore creatively instead of making safe artistic choices that you know will generate revenue to a mass audience. After all, this is the music “business.“ We are faced with fears that must be overcome because of the financial cutbacks – free music downloads or $.99 files that are divided several different ways between labels, publishers, songwriters, artists, distributors etc. and streaming music where artists receive less than one penny per stream. For 55 million streams of Peter Frampton ’s hit “Baby I Love Your Way”, he received $1,700. The effect of this is that artists

“My strength is in songwriting and in seeing the holes in the marketplace that need to be filled”

don’t have the longevity they used to because: there is no budget for artist development, flashy production has oftentimes replaced traditional songwriting talent/structure, and the budgets for radio promotion have diminished significantly. Labels are forced to choose a handful of artists that they can afford to promote while the other artists signed to the same label don’t have the benefit of the bigger budgets. All of these factors contribute to the longevity of an artist’s career beyond their creative abilities. That is exactly why I’ve chosen to focus on fixing these problems for both artists and labels to be able to flourish financially. Stay tuned!

What upcoming projects or collaborations are you most excited about? How do you see the music industry evolving in the next five years, and where do you see yourself within that evolution?

I recently co-founded a streaming platform with Aris and Rhonda Persidis called MusicSoul . It is a technology platform that uses a variety of new techniques to get artists paid to do what they love – make music and monetize it. My goal is to create a sustainable income stream for artists to be able to share their gifts with the world. In the process, I would like to create a middle class that doesn’t currently exist in the music industry. Most people don't realize the financial insecurity that comes without having a steady salary. Not knowing where your next dollar will be coming from is an awful way to live. Even if you are great at your craft in this day and age and achieved great success – you would not be paid fairly from today’s music streaming platforms. For example, Snoop Dogg got one billion streams on Spotify and made less than $45,000. This is a fact and is unacceptable. Why would anyone want to be in an industry where great success no longer equals great reward?

The world would be a hollow place without music to fill it up with meaning, purpose, joy, and love. Music gets us through our toughest moments and heartbreak. It allows us to

celebrate life to the fullest, and reflect on all we've accomplished. I believe that music is God’s voice speaking through us - and to value it, as most streaming platforms have done at $0.004, is criminal. I intend to flip this financial model on its head on MusicSoul by creating a brand new model that gives artists a chance to profit and succeed in a way that is meaningful – allowing them not only to survive, but to thrive.

I am grateful that my career is definitely evolving in bold new ways. I am excited that I have been able to take all of my music industry experience and funnel it into various businesses to help turn artists into stars. In addition to all I have learned creatively and from a songwriting/production perspective, I have also learned a ton about marketing, branding and exposing the artist to a broader audience. I have created businesses to be able to put these new artists in situations where they can succeed. Each of these elements are necessary in order to become a global brand. Each of these businesses are synergistic and feed each other and cover a wide range – TV, virtual reality, tech, beauty, as well as the label side. I specifically built this business with my partners so that artists no longer have to wait for approvals from the gatekeepers. They are able to monetize their careers immediately. We have built an ecosystem - MusicSoul . To me, that is extremely exciting! Total creative freedom to serve up great music to the world and influence pop culture.

Are there any genres or styles of music you haven't explored yet but would like to in the future?

I really feel that I’ve explored nearly every genre of music as a songwriter. However, not all of those songs have been released to the public. I will keep following my passion and be inspired by new influences that will hopefully break down boundaries of genre.

How do you maintain creativity and passion for your work amidst the pressures of the music industry?

“The world would be a hollow place without music to fill it up with meaning, purpose, joy, and love.”

I truly believe that music flows through us. I am not sure that we are the actual creators of it - when done correctly, I believe that the Universe speaks through us - that we are vehicles for something greater.

In order to stay inspired I think it’s crucial to self-reflect and think about your own journey. Are you making the right choices to achieve the kind of life that you want to live? Are you finding your sense of purpose through the work you are putting into the world? Do the people around you support you in being the best version of yourself? It’s important to ask yourself these kinds of questions on a regular basis in order to stay on track. You are the star in your life’s movie. It’s up to you to live a great story. You are writing your legacy every day.

I truly believe that the only way to stand out and remain passionate in such a saturated music industry is to be authentically yourself. There is only one you. Do not try to appeal to the masses. Start with finding your niche audience and then build from there. That way you will find your core fans faster and be able to have a home team supporting you to eventually bring your message to the masses. This is how organic growth starts. If you cast your net too wide from the beginning, you will be less likely to connect with your fans in a way that is meaningful and will inspire them to draw and their friends. The more authentic and vulnerable you are, the more you will have a connection that lasts with people who care about your success for the right reasons.

What advice would you give to aspiring singers, songwriters, and music producers who are just starting their careers?

1. Surround yourself with people you trust.

2. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Make sure that your music represents your creative vision.

3. Work your ass off. If you don’t, there are a ton of artists who would be happy to jump in and take your place. You have to really want it

and fight for it.

4. Have patience and know that success is not achieved overnight.

5. Be willing to take constructive criticism from people you respect in your specific field. Know your own strengths and weaknesses, and surround yourself with people who can compensate for your weaknesses. It takes a village to create an artist that becomes a global brand. Nobody does it alone.

6. Protect yourself and your work. There are two legal documents that every artist in the music business should have. An NDA/noncircumvention agreement and a Finders Fee agreement. Many careers have progressed forward by using these two documents. They will come in handy.

7. Don’t be afraid to have the difficult business conversations up front so you don’t have more difficult business predicaments down the road.

8. Never forget that the song always wins! An exceptional singer with a mediocre song will fail, while an average singer with an exceptional song will have a hit! Make sure that your song will sound great if sung with only a guitar or a piano. Is the chorus simple and memorable enough for a stadium of fans to sing it back to you while you’re on stage?

“I truly believe that the only way to stand out and remain passionate in such a saturated music industry is to be authentically yourself.”

stardom. If I can be that person, then I’m happy to do it.

10. Diversifying my interests has helped me progress further in each field. My advice would be, if you’re naturally inclined to do more than one thing - stay diverse, it keeps things interesting.

11. Stay malleable. Hard work, determination, and a ton of trial and error. You need to take calculated risks in order to progress forward in any field. The fields I've chosen to pursue are among the most difficult to achieve success. Taking risks and finding your voice, understanding what is unique about yourself and how can you best contribute are all crucial factors in building a career that lasts.

Without commitment mastery will never be attained. Not in sports, not in medicine, not in relationships, not in music, not in business, not in anything. Period. For it is only with the effort of devoting our time and attention to something, that we can reap the rewards of literally anything.

12. You must unequivocally believe in yourself. You can't allow any voices of doubt to change your direction in life. Your path will always hand you challenges and obstacles to overcome. You have to be so resolute in your own ability to visualize your future that nobody can sway you into believing that you are not enough. You are valuable and we all have a magic within us that is meant to shine. Our purpose is to deliver our gifts to the world. Can you share a memorable moment or story from your career that has stayed with you and continues to inspire you?

I had just been touring Europe after signing to Universal and was incredibly focused on my career as a recording artist when I discovered and developed 13-time Grammy , 2 time Golden Globe , and Oscar winning icon Lady Gaga . I developed Lady Gaga 's career during the recording of Lady Gaga 's album The Fame , which received Billboard's Album of the Decade – having logged 62 of its recordsetting 108 total weeks at No. 1 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart this decade.

When Lady Gaga got her first record deal was one of the most exciting moments for me. She was sitting on my lap in her lawyer’s office while signing on the dotted line. We had worked so hard to get to that point, and we knew that life was about to change. It will be a moment that I will always hold dear to my heart.

Lady Gaga and I wrote songs together and strategized about the project to build it into a cultural phenomenon. I could not be more proud of Lady Gaga and her accomplishments - especially in the environment of today’s music industry. It is truly mind blowing. That level of success is built on hard work, a ‘never quit’ attitude, creativity, and a deep passion for everything she does. As they say, if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. I believe that Lady Gaga‘ s extreme success is built on this motto. Our team worked tirelessly to create something bigger than ourselves, and I couldn’t be more proud that we were able to achieve that by building a global brand that will cement Lady Gaga ’s place in history.

“Lady Gaga and I wrote songs together and strategized about the project to build it into a cultural phenomenon. ”

FASHION

The INTERSECTION of ART and FASHION

EXPLORING COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN FASHION DESIGNERS AND ARTISTS

In the world of fashion, innovation and creativity are the cornerstones of success. As designers continually seek fresh perspectives and unique expressions, the intersection of art and fashion has emerged as a fertile ground for groundbreaking collaborations. These partnerships between fashion designers and artists are not merely aesthetic experiments; they are dynamic fusions that push the boundaries of both disciplines, creating a new, hybrid form of cultural expression.

THE EVOLUTION OF ARTISTIC

COLLABORATIONS IN FASHION

Historically, the relationship between fashion and art has been symbiotic. From Elsa Schiaparelli’s surrealist collections inspired by Salvador Dalí in the 1930s to Yves Saint Laurent's 1965 Mondrian collection, which translated Piet Mondrian’s abstract paintings into iconic dresses, the dialogue between these two worlds has been rich and ongoing. These early collaborations set a precedent for the contemporary partnerships we see today, where the lines between fashion and art are increasingly blurred.

MODERN COLLABORATIONS: A CREATIVE SYNERGY

In recent years, the collaboration between Louis Vuitton and contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama stands out as a prime example of how fashion and art can merge to create something truly extraordinary. Kusama 's signature polka dots adorned Louis Vuitton 's bags, clothes, and accessories, transforming them into wearable art pieces that were both commercially successful and critically acclaimed. This partnership highlighted how art can enhance the narrative of a fashion brand, bringing a new dimension to its aesthetic and appeal.

Another notable collaboration is that of Alexander McQueen with British artist Damien Hirst . Their 2013 project celebrated the 10th anniversary of McQueen 's iconic skull scarf by featuring Hirst ’s entomology series—prints of butterflies, bugs, and spiders—in the scarf designs. This collaboration was a perfect marriage of McQueen 's dark, romantic sensibility and Hirst's provocative artistry, resulting in a collection that was both beautiful and haunting.

THE IMPACT ON CREATIVE BOUNDARIES

These collaborations do more than just blend aesthetics; they challenge and expand the creative boundaries of both fashion and art. For designers, working with artists provides an opportunity to explore new materials, techniques, and concepts. Artists, on the other hand, gain a platform to reach broader audiences and to see their work interpreted in new, dynamic ways.

For instance, the partnership between streetwear brand Supreme and contemporary artist Jeff Koons brought the highbrow world of fine art into the accessible realm of everyday fashion. Koons ' iconic imagery on Supreme ’s apparel not only democratized his art but also elevated the brand’s status, merging street culture with high art in a way that resonated with a diverse audience.

THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

The intersection of art and fashion also carries significant cultural implications. These collaborations often reflect and comment on societal issues, making bold statements about identity, politics, and culture. Consider the collaboration between feminist artist Barbara Kruger and fashion label Supreme . Kruger ’s distinctive textbased art, which critiques consumerism and patriarchy, aligned seamlessly with Supreme ’s edgy, countercultural ethos, resulting in a collection that was as thought-provoking as it was stylish.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS: BEYOND TRADITIONAL BOUNDARIES

As we look to the future, the potential for collaboration between fashion designers and artists seems boundless. The rise of digital art and technology offers new avenues for creative partnerships. Virtual reality, augmented reality, and digital fashion are areas ripe for exploration, promising to push the boundaries even further. Imagine virtual fashion shows where garments morph and change in real-time, designed in collaboration with digital artists, or augmented reality features in retail spaces that allow consumers to experience art and fashion in immersive new ways.
