Scene One –AwidecourtyardoutsideFabrizio’shouse.

The front of the house has a large rustic porch covered with trellis work; from one of the pillars hangs an open cage, containing a MAGPIE. A gated archway gives access to the courtyard. A small hill is visible in the background.

On stage are various VILLAGERS. PIPPO and LUCIA are bringing in food in preparation for a feast.

Some FAMILY MEMBERS carry from the house large trays covered with drinks and offer them around to the VILLAGERS. Pippo enters with glass in hand and gets the festivities going.

FERNANDO, disguised, appears on the hill and descends, all the while looking around himself furtively.

NINETTA counts the cutlery. Unseen by NINETTA, FERNANDO enters the courtyard and looks at FABRIZIO’s house.

FERNANDO: (recognising FABRIZIO’s house) Thisisthehouse.

NINETTA: (to herself, not seeing FERNANDO) No,nothing’smissing.

FERNANDO: (noticing NINETTA, sobbing) ThankHeavens,it’s Ninetta,it’smydaughter!HowcanIfaceherwith thenewsIhavetotell?

NINETTA: (noticing, but not recognising, FERNANDO) DearLord–who’sthis?Thepoormanisweeping. (Approaching timidly.) Tellme,howcanIhelpyou?

FERNANDO: (removing his disguise – sadly) Oh,mydarling...my Ninetta.

NINETTA: (overjoyed, throwing herself into FERNANDO’s arms) Ah, darlingFather!
