Song of Creation
To mark the new millennium, Peter Rose and Anne Conlon have chosen to celebrate the wonders of creation, exploring the life-giving forces of earth, air and water, eventually charting the awesome splendour of human achievement.
But Song of Creation also looks to the future. As the human spirit continues its drive to create a better world, who will benefit, and who will pay the price?
Peter Rose and Anne Conlon
Awarded MBEs ‘For services to Musical Education and Conservation at Home and Abroad’, Peter and Anne are internationally renowned for their highly successful environmental musicals which have been performed by countless thousands of children throughout the world.
“I can think of few better ways of alerting children to the problems of development and of teaching them the truths of global ecological concerns than by introducing them to the musicals of Peter Rose and Anne Conlon.”
Sir David Attenborough

AFRICAN JIGSAW
African Jigsaw looks at one of the greatest problems facing all countries in the developing world: the drift of people away from the land which is failing to support them, to the cities where they live in ever-expanding shanty towns. African Jigsaw does not attempt to provide answers to the questions; it simply places fragments of the puzzle before its audience. Full of memorable tunes, this highly acclaimed work was broadcast on ITV and also won a Ford Conservation Award.

ARABICA
This work looks at the international coffee market to show how developing countries are simply pawns in the money games played by the major industrial powers. Although we are encouraged to be more conscientious consumers, we still buy basic commodities at the supermarket with barely a thought as to how they got there. The attractive shiny coffee packets we choose disguise the fact that the people growing and picking this coffee are paid virtually nothing, and their countries are at the mercy of the World Bank or the IMF. How can it be that just about everyone else – coffee merchants, international companies, speculators – profits from the enterprise? In Arabica , Rose and Conlon bring us another powerful message that demands urgent attention.

OCEAN WORLD
Humankind has always been fascinated by the sea, but today our over-use of the earth’s resources is destroying this underwater world. Coral reef exploitation, whaling ships, commercial fishing vessels, oil spillages and domestic, industrial and nuclear wastes – this combined assault along with the rising temperatures caused by climate change means that the ocean simply cannot sustain the extraordinary quantity and variety of species it once held. The authors’ message is clear and simple: if we continue to misuse the sea, we will ultimately kill all the life in it. With a powerful and moving score, Ocean World was shown in Channel 4’s Fragile Earth series, narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

ONE SUN, ONE WORLD
This musical by Peter Rose and Anne Conlon was commissioned by the World Wide Fund for Nature to mark the organisation’s 50th anniversary. The oak tree, the panda, the polar bear and the tiger remind us of the great wonders and beauties of the earth and the intricate threads of life linking every living thing. The children of the world tell us about the amazing web of trade and communication which has produced our exciting modern world with its global transport systems and its ever-changing technology. But as the musical unfolds, the characters become more and more worried by changes beyond their control. The children of the world wonder how they can help to protect this wonderful life we all know.

YANOMAMO
Yanomamo vividly tells of the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest and its effect on the Yanomami, the oldest indigenous tribe living there. The Yanomami have successfully lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years; left undisturbed, they could continue to do so indefinitely. But their survival, and that of millions of animals and plant species, is threatened by the intrusion of outsiders who are eager to exploit the land and its resources. As the delicate balance of nature is systematically eroded, the rainforests, which are crucial to the world’s ecosystem, start to disappear along with the indigenous inhabitants and the wildlife. Is there the time or the will to save them? Yanomamo , narrated by Sting, was filmed as “Song of the Forest” and shown in Channel 4’s Fragile Earth series.

SONG OF CREATION
This beautiful cantata celebrates the wonders of creation from the vastness of the universe and the hidden complexity of photosynthesis to the awesome power of the human mind and the splendour of human achievement. It explores the interconnected life-giving forces of our beautiful world – sun, soil, air, water – and the fragile diversity of life, including our own, which depends on them. Very much resonating with Rose and Conlon’s WWF works, Song of Creation was written in association with the international development charity, CAFOD and poses an urgent question. As the human spirit continues its drive to create a better world, who will benefit and who will pay the price?
Printed Editions: Word Book, Chorus Book
