Magnificat was commissioned by The Bach Choir with the support of a legacy from Donald Wort, a past member of the choir. Additional funds were made available by Greater London Arts, the London Arts Board Special Activities Fund (administered by the National Federation of Music Societies), and an award from the government’s Business Sponsorshin Incentive Scheme (administered by the Associations from Business Sponsorship of the Arts) in connection with earlier sponsorship by the Millennium Group.

The World Premiere was given by the Bach Choir under the direction of Sir David Willcocks on 10 March 1994 in New Zealand during the Wellington International Festival, with further performances in Britain on 25 May 1994 in Westminster Cathedral (London) and on 3 July 1994 in King’s College Chapel, Cambridge.
