WASTE(D) POTENTIAL

Urban upgrading through reimagined waste management

Located in the residential neighbourhood of Gugulethu in Cape Town, the project aim was to identify a challenge observed within the neighbourhood and develop a framework that outlined a series of strategies that proposed alternative ways of interacting with the challenges and offering solutions.

This proposal looks at the prevalence of waste dumping within Gugulethu due to insufficient waste collection and recognition of population density amongst other causes. This proposal is for an alternative waste management framework to bridge the gap of service provision that currently exists between the user and the state in Guguletu according to the standard collection service. The framework engages incentive programs and economic opportunity that can be found in alternative waste management methods in a way that promotes urban upgrading throughout the neighbourhood.

Along with extending the ability of waste collection to the auto-constructed settlement portions of Guguletu, using examples like the Johannesburg trolley-pushers and examples from Curitiba’s recycling program in Brazil, the framework considers ever-densifying properties that generate greater amounts of waste than catered for. Using a collection of routes, hubs and stations, paired with social and educational investment in these spatial interventions, the intention is to create, through incremental steps, a cleaner, safer Guguletu.
