Description In the year 2600, storms, floods, and sea rise have reshaped the New York neighborhoods and edges, augmenting territorial boundaries. The idea of a ‘walled’ borough has been destroyed and our understanding of the so-called ground plane has been substituted by a new water plane. Looking at water/maritory instead of land/territory as a space of inhabitation is an opportunity to question our present landlocked culture and its territorial resolution of neighborhood boundaries. The argument of this [hypo]thesis tests the urban spectacle of the New York metropolis, while imagining the rising tides, storms, and other natural phenomena as an opportunity to explore a new perspective for the city rather than merely looking for ways to protect what already exists.

The core of this [hypo]thesis is activated through time iterative [animate] mappings of flooding and storm projections for New York City, while inventing new aquatic boundaries in the year 2600. The vision of a year 2600 flooded New York, demands that we question our existing social structures and how we relate to both urban and natural environments. This hypothetical lens reveals Manhattan in its primitive configuration, while searching for novel boundaries in nature’s form-finding processes.

This project explores through research the evolution of the New York boroughs, recognizing territorial deformations it has undergone in the process of becoming a metropolis, while challenging the impact on the environment and its relationship with its built surroundings.

Description Gravity has been an essential condition of habitation that has been at the core of architecture’s foundational principles. On this issue the French Architect Claude Parent date and his theory of the Oblique function proposed an environment in which floor, wall and roof become one continuous surface discovering a new relation of the body and the forces at play. Skateboarding presented a new condition for the body. as it body acts as an engine directing the motion of the board and defying sometimes the laws of physics.

This research highlights the body and the forces at play and the many possibilities of the body in motion. In skateboarding the body redefines the discontinuity of the horizontal and the vertical, creating a continuous new surface. In a transformation process this condition is explored and emphasized through a proposed a new continuous three-dimensional surface built by the traces of the body while skateboarding. Haptic skateboarding invites the spectator to inhabit a continuous and fluid surface in a space in which the forces at play becomes a new play-ground as a continuous flow of the body in movement in which a great number of variations are possible without ever stopping on the horizontal ground plane.

Description New York and New Jersey are antithesis of each other. Their inhabitants are mostly commuters, living in New Jersey, working in New York, inhabiting the space in between. The main idea of this project is to recognize this transient situation that produces a rupture of the boundaries of each city.

The proposal is to understand the behavior of citizens moving between these two places and to create a new city in between. This new city would respond to a shared economy live/work structure. The In Between becomes a city that questions our living/working building typologies along with public and private boundaries.

Description While drinking from a stream our hand transforms into a vessel, unveiling it as an object. The gesture of two hands together reveals a primitive image of this object, indexing our earlier understanding of it. When containing a liquid, the vessel improves the act of carrying and conserving, objectifying the hand into a container. In the evolution of the relationship shared between the hand and the vessel we discovered the versatility of the hand, unfolding the possibilities of holding and grabbing the vessel, serving as a prop to the hand.

By making the object versatile, this process investigates the idea of a “vessel within a vessel� rethinking its norms, set standards and performances in containing a single element, transgressing the restrictions of an earlier understanding of a vessel. The project presents a series of variations that address the question of the hand, the vessel and the contained exploring materiality, through the lens of transparency and insulation, stability, maneuverability and orientation, involved in our understanding of a vessel. Materiality is looked in this research through the lens of transparency and insulation.

Description Since the great earthquake of 1960 in Chile, Talcahuano became an important industrial, military and fishery city in the country.

As a result the city had a major problem with pollution being ranked in the 1990’s as one of the 80 most polluted cities in the world. The earthquake and tsunami of February 27th 2010 gave the city the chance to rebuild and rethink its future development.

Catch-A-Lot is a message inspired by the phenomenon of the city Talcahuano towards their citizens, using the catastrophe as an opportunity to redesign the imaginary of the city, healing its sore spot, result of the destruction of the disaster but also by all those years of being a polluted and low profile city . Talcahuano would project an encouraging image of the future.

The project is a thesis of the power of architecture to show a “conscious change” by recognizing different topics that are symbolic to the phenomenon of the city, so the project alone is a tool of change by contrasting the reality of “where we are” with “where we could be”.

Description The Mapuche are the most important living native culture of Chile, having an important role in our identity and history. Because of urban growth they have been segregated from their natural environments and so their children are born in an urban context. In the last two decades 80% of Mapuche live in urban areas. How can design and architecture support Mapuche lifestyle and culture in an urban context?

The project consists on a social housing development of 150 houses at Cerro Navia in Santiago, the capital of the country. An essentially Mapuche complex that tries to rescue their way of living by creating an urban design according to their costumes and knowledge of the land.

The complex consists on 4 typologies according to orientation, each one with direct access to a common patio that reinforce community meetings with a strong presence of nature. Houses also have access to a smaller patio where families can reunite and so have a more private relation with the exterior.

ABSTRACT “A child sometimes is a product of his environment And sometime a child’s environment is a product of him” Mark Gonzales (skateboard legend), Untitled poem, 1999 (marker on paper) As architects, we have been engaging gravity when designing a wall, a floor or a roof. In 1964, the French architect Claude Parent and the theorist Paul Virilio introduced the theory of the Oblique Function, creating an environment built on a continuous surface where floor, wall and roof became one. By transgressing the relation of the vertical and the horizontal in architecture they depicted a new condition for the body in relation to gravity and the forces at play (Figure 1). Simultaneously with their thesis, a new playground was being constructed by children on the streets, skateboarding was introduced, producing - as well - a new modern condition for the body.

Without realizing it, skateboarders were inhabiting and producing the oblique (Figure 2), challenging the normative of what was possible on the ground. With this body engine moving-surface (skateboard) children were defying the laws of physics and creating their own playgrounds and environments. The fluidity, speed, and continuity of skateboarding overlap with Parent & Virilio’s ideas, rendering the activity of skateboarding and its construction a physical expression of their concepts.

Skateboarding became of interest for kids and adults just as it questioned the design of architects and urban planners. The John F. Kennedy Plaza (a.k.a Love Park) in Philadelphia completed in 1965, designed by local City Planner Edmund Bacon and architect Vincent G. Kling, represented the dreams of the city to become modern. With big concrete areas along with smooth benches and various types of stairs, this space turned into a skateboarding mecca since the 1980’s with a worldwide recognition. This not being the aspiration of the authorities for the space, the city redesigned the park in 2002 in order to eradicate skateboarders from the Plaza.

As a reaction to this event, a new space was constructed in the city, a “handmade” skatepark “by and for” skateboarders that continues to grow under the I-95 in the southern peripheries of Philadelphia. FDR skatepark, built and designed by skateboarders, clearly physicalizes the ideas of Paul Virilio and Claude Parent, constructing a continuous “useful surface” improving the experience of the fluidity and speed of the activity, helping the body transgress the forces at play.

This research highlights the overlaps between Paul Virilio and Claude Parent’s theories and the evolution of Skateboarding. Discovering their ideas embodied in skateboarding and skateparks, presents a playful new way of reading their work while recognizing the impact of this activity in society. The recognition of the potential of the relation between the body and the forces at play are exhibited as a transgressive way to design, thus questioning our static everyday life spaces and the way we inhabit them.

ABSTRACT On February 27th 2010 Chile experienced once again a natural catastrophe an 8.8 Richter scale earthquake and tsunami, characterized by a large area of impact. As a result much of the coastal border was destroyed, adding another problem to the already affected ports of the country.

Talcahuano, now also known as Ground Zero, has been greatly affected, so that the number of homes destroyed and the number of people killed is surpassed by the qualitative damage that occurred in the area. This is not the first time that Talcahuano suffers an earthquake and tsunami. During its history it has been these catastrophes that have transformed the city, recognizing four distinctive stages, Foundational (1544 - 1764), Military Port (1765 - 1844), Commercial Port (1850 - 1914) and First Military, Industrial and Fishing Port (1950 - 2010).

By recognizing this pattern the research aims to consciously change the city towards a new and encouraging imaginary. Highlighting and analyzing, its historical milestones, urban expansion, Identity, the effects of the catastrophe and a variety of environmental concerns that Talcahuano has particularly been suffering since its previous period of industrialization.

The research along with dissecting the city aims to build a fiction that calls and identifies Talcahuano and its citizens, turning the catastrophe into an opportunity of a conscious change, particularly at a time when the city has to be rebuild itself.

Talcahuano marked by years of pollution and economic stagnation, had the chance to project an encouraging image of the future. Acknowledging this the research justifies the idea of turning the city into an Environmental Capital, recovering its great masses of polluted sea water, along with reconnecting its citizens with the coast, now feared after the catastrophe.

The research concludes with an image of a new and recovered city, which was also related to a renovation plan for the city center’s bay along with an iconic skimmer vessel that will clean the waters. This project confirms the idea that architecture is a tool of political power and change, which was tested after an exhibition of this ideas at the Municipality Building of the city, becoming an important part of the development plan that would run through 2030.

EFFICIENT SHOPPING MALLS: CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND ITS RAPPORT WITH ARCHITECTURE (DESIGN OF COMMON SPACES) Year Context Advisor Pages Responsibility Link

ABSTRACT Chile, according to its geography has an amount of natural resources that gives to the country a great potential on Renewable Energies. However it suers an energetic crisis and dependence of 65%. Furthermore in 2025 is estimated that the energetic demand triplicates increasing this dependence to 80%. Becoming a big issue for Chile in order to reach development and support the growth of the country.

Along with understanding and explaining the energy market in Chile and its production, this research questions the design and consumption of big scale spaces present in Malls or Shopping Centers by passive design criteria on how to reduce the consumption of air conditioning and so of energy.

According to the research, the urban infrastructure with the highest consume rate in Chile are the Shopping Malls, with a rate of 5 MW to 12 MW. The continuous demand for this kind of projects and the recognition of air conditioning as the main point of consumption gives architecture and architects an important role to help reduce the energy dependence of the country.

Through this research the modus operandi and the business of shopping malls are analyzed in order to understand how to improve the architecture and design of the building. Highlighting that the Shopping Mall administration rents all the spaces to other enterprises except of the common areas of the building which operation cost directly aects the owner and so its reduction is an important issue.

The exploration of this concept led to several proposals on how to reduce the air conditioning use of the building, looking for shapes and materials that will increase natural ventilation instead of blocking it as it is today. The research also questions the energetic system and policies that the country has which at the same time pollutes.

Description An international architecture competition from the regional government of Santiago called “Nueva AlamedaProvidencia”. As a senior architect I was in charge of a team of 3 architects from Sencorp Arquitectura S.A. while working in coordination with 2 international teams from Bac Ingenieros (Spain) and Zaha Hadid Architects (United Kingdom).

In the last decades, the Alameda, the place of the “pedestrian citizen” (the only role that anyone and everybody, in justice and equity, can play daily on the urban stage has disappeared from the scene. The central objective of the project was to recover the character of this most important pedestrian corridor and re-building the place that Bernardo O’Higgins (Chile’s founding father and first president) named as Campo de la Libertad Civil (Field of Civil Liberty).

CONCEPTUAL MODEL / COPPER SHEETS AND ACRYLIC / VIEW OF MAIN PARK AREA

Description A sustainable satellite city in the desert outside of Copiapo, which is intended to grow over 4 stages as the market improves in the area. The project uses the concept of “cracked soil”, that grows while inhabiting the territory bringing shadow, water, and vegetation to a desert landscape.

We also used the idea of “landmark” from which we proposed to design different water towers that would show the different areas of the project allowing itself to be seen from long distances particularly at vehicular scale so drivers crossing the Panamericana highway located south of the site would easily recognize the project.

Description From July 2011 until May 2012, I participated as a Junior architect in Abraham Senerman’s office in Chile, as part of the Architectural team for the construction of Parque Titanium Complex (three 23 stories office buildings, a Convention Centre, a Gastronomic Boulevard, a commerce and services area, and a public use private park with a green roof of 9000 sqm, also open to the public.

Responsibility : Leading Architect and designer CLAMA Arquitectura Description The project was part of a Chilean central government program called “Quiero Mi Barrio” which gives funding to areas in need to build infrastructure that boosts the communities relationships with each other in order to create a safer and more enjoyable neighborhood.

The site was squatted by local hooligans, who have restricted the access to the community, along with bringing insecurity to the area. The extension of the site’s surface and its location gave an important role to the bathrooms and shower building, adding a meeting room for the community and providing shadowed areas for the site.

By a participatory process with the community, we proposed a building that would strongly relate to the outside using it’s 4 facades to create new activities for the surroundings.

The main facade (east) highlights the building and creates a wider community reunion space with the exterior entrance garden. The back facade (west) has a brise soleil, an exterior bathroom and a sink incorporated giving a sense of privacy to the “rayuela” players and viewers that will occupy the court behind the building. The North and South facades include the administration room and kitchen, providing control to the site. Along with the building the project has a concrete basketball court, a Rayuela court (national sport), and a green space as the main entrance.

Description The project is a home renovation at a traditional residential neighborhood in Santiago. The project maintained the traditional appearance in the street front and carries out a renewal in the interior.

The proposal creates dynamic spaces around a main patio that is surrounded by different programs making it the main space of the guests house where social and recreational activities can take place. Using of wood and color is very important to the project, giving each area a different character.

Description This project is a meeting space where club members of a soccer club can enjoy watching the matches. The main idea is to create an open space with a sense of interior while having a panoramic view of what is happening outside on the ďŹ elds.

The project is an extension of an existing kiosk which needed to have a comfortable space for their clients to watch the matches on they streamed or what was the ones on the court. Wood and steel are the main materials for the pergola area and an aluminum structure is used to expand the kitchen area.

Description Three private office spaces, a meeting room, 3 open working areas, a coffee/kitchenette meeting area and the design of the terrace space was the requirement from the clients. The idea was to create a central private module that will contain most of the “formal” working spaces, leaving the perimeter and terrace free for a more casual space to meet. An low-budgeted yet elegant design was asked from the clients, looking at plywood sheets as the main material for this project.

CO-INSPIRING THE ALAMEDA Year : Fall Semester 2012 (March - July) Location : Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, Universidad de Chile, Santiago Teaching Team : Andrés Weil + Sebastian Cuevas + José Mateluna Course : Research in Architecture Design Studio - 4th year Responsibility : Teacher Assistant and Co-Author of the research As part of the research on Chilean identity conducted by Professor Andrés Weil since 2008, the semester took as a starting point a text by Humberto Maturana of 1988, Emotions and language in education and politics (Emociones y lenguaje en educación y política - Editorial Hachette CED sixth edition october 1992). In which the author questions the role of education in chilean society . He author points out that this answer can only be answered in terms of what we want to achieve with education, which in the end is nothing more than the project of country that we wish to build.

On the occasion of the discussion about education in Chile, the Studio seeks to understand the country project we have built over the last sixty years and, on this knowledge, propose a new architectural fiction in the central sector of the Alameda in Santiago.

Humberto Maturana said in his book: “we have fragmented as a community, and the only way, I think, to reconstitute ourselves as a nationality, is through a Co-inspiration, through a common inspiration for our work as a nation. It must be an ethical-moral co-operation that defines and constitutes a space of mutual acceptance where the presence of any Chilean is legitimate even if we do not know him/her, and where our actions do not deny that presence. “ The students’ project consists of proposing a new architectural fiction for the Alameda between the San Francisco Church and the Central Station (about 3,5 kilometers long), taking as a design premise the decision to transfer public transportation to the central basin.

The students as Humberto Maturana says, will co-inspire this fiction, developing only one project as a whole group, organizing teams and team leaders to coordinate their ideas and works.

OUTCOME After this collaborative process with the students we were able to draw an accurate vision for the Alameda, continuing our research on “Chilean Identity and the Country’s Project”.

After two studios and two years of research the project was presented to the local authorities on 2013, promoting the urgency of recovering this space.

Layering, adding and subtracting were the main tools for them to interact with the project. Using foam, wood and plaster as the main materials for their work.

As each team understood their concept they were able to brake the frame of this theoretical volume, exploring other forms that will better communicate their idea and ďŹ nal gesture to a possible inhabitant of their project.

MODELING THE HEIGHT Year : Spring Semester 2015 (August - November) Location : Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, Universidad de Chile, Santiago Teaching Team : Manuel Amaya + José Mateluna + Marcelo Marti + Andrea Cáceres + Viktor Césped Course : Architectural Design Studio - 3th year Responsibility : Teacher Assistant The fast growth and need of soil in the Metropolitan Region, in the context of the discussion about the Metropolitan Plan (PRMS 100), the studio challenged the third year architecture students to propose and design the highest tower in Santiago, recognizing the values and difficulties that a vertical architecture has to encounter.

The project designed in groups of two student had to be over 200 meters tall and become an icon of the place that it’s going to be located, proposing a mix-use program and also considering the challenge of structure in a seismic country like Chile.
