Future of Brazilian ethanol will be discussed at Ethanol Summit 2013

Futuro del etanol brasileño será debatido en el Ethanol Summit 2013

The 4th Ethanol Summit will be held on June 27-28 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in São Paulo, the same place as in 2011. The event will be the subject of a special supplement to be produced and published in English by The Washington Post. The publication of the supplement is being negotiated for April.

The schedule of the event is being developed, but the main themes have been defined, such as the future of ethanol and the Brazilian sugarcane industry, ten years of flex cars in Brazil and the arrival of the first plants producing cellulosic ethanol on a commercial scale - five will be launched throughout 2013.

"As speakers are being confirmed, the names and details of each presentation will be added to the official schedule, which will be on the website of the event", said Adhemar Altieri, director of corporate communications at Unica and event organizer. "A la medida que los conferencistas vayan siendo confirmados, los nombres y detalles sobre cada presentación serán agregados a la agenda oficial, que estará en el sitio web del evento", explica Adhemar Altieri, director de comunicación corporativa de Unica y organizador del evento. La declaración fue hecha por el Director de la consultoría alemana de la F.O. Licht, Chistopher Berg, durante el evento Brasil Sugar and Ethanol realizado en Brasil, en la ciudad de São Paulo, el 19 de marzo.

Según cifras publicadas por Berg durante su presentación, se espera que el país produzca 26,4 billones de litros de etanol en 2013/2014, en comparación con 23,5 billones de litros en 2012/2013. De ese total, 24, 35 billones de litros se utilizarán como combustible.

Producción de azúcar en Brasil crecerá un 5,8% en la temporada La Producción de azúcar en la temporada 2013/14 del centro-sur de Brasil, la más grande región productora del mundo, será 5.8% mayor que en 2012/2013. La previsión es que sean producidas 36,2 millones de toneladas a partir de 585 millones de toneladas de caña de azúcar, según la consultoría F.O. Licht. Brazil needs to invest in increase of processing capacity to meet demand

ese objetivo sea imposible. Somos capaces de cumplir con esa producción. Tenemos suficiente tierra y espacio y se puede producir de manera sostenible. Pero eso depende de la rapidez con la que se creen reglas claras. Cuanto más tiempo tome, más difícil será”, dijo.

Según datos de la Unica, en 2015 el país llegará a su máxima capacidad de procesamiento de caña y la expansión de la producción sólo se logrará con la introducción de nueva capacidad de procesamiento y grandes inversiones en nuevas tecnologías. El ritmo de ese crecimiento se determinará por las condiciones del mercado en Brasil y en el mundo, así como las políticas públicas para el etanol especialmente.

“Faltan líderes en el sector de etanol y azúcar de Brasil” Los representantes del sector sucroenergético brasileño se reunieron para un debate en la Conferencia fueron unánimes al afirmar que el Gobierno de Brasil deja mucho que desear en relación a las políticas públicas para el sector.

Según los expertos está aumentando el número de Plantas que buscan algún tipo de sello para demostrar la sostenibilidad de su producción. Actualmente hay varios mecanismos existentes en el mundo, mas, los que más interesan a Brasil son aquellos certificados que

permiten la venta del combustible para los principales mercados como el norteamericano y el europeo.

“Brasil ya tiene un número significativo de Plantas certificadas y la demanda ha aumentado, especialmente por el sello de la agencia de protección ambiental americana (EPA) para la entrada en los Estados Unidos", dijo Tarcilo Rodrigues, del IETHA- International Ethanol Trade Association.

Todavía no hay datos que muestran el impacto comercial de las certificaciones de etanol en el mercado de exportación brasileño, pero existe un consenso entre los expertos sobre la importancia de ese tipo de sello para la tan solicitada commoditización del etanol y también

funcionan como una muestra del compromiso del sector con la sostenibilidad.

Según el Director de Sostenibilidad de la Unión de la Industria de Caña de Azúcar (Unica), Luiz Fernando do Amaral la certificación es una herramienta importante para demostrar la sostenibilidad de los productos y se considera una diferencia, pero no ha sido suficiente para facilitar el acceso del etanol brasileño al mercado de Europa, por ejemplo. “Sectorialmente las certificaciones son muy importantes para darle fuerza, demostrar las mejores prácticas del sector.

Ayudan a romper algunos mitos, así como aportar garantías a los consumidores. Pero las certificaciones por sí mismas deben analizarse en el contexto del mercado”, dijo. (FM)

For the entry of Brazilian ethanol in the U.S. market as advanced fuel, it requires a certificate attesting that the product is within the rules of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS-2), a set of rules governing the production and use of biofuels in U.S. territory. The certification is issued by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition to the varieties available to Brazilian plants, there is also supply of technology to other countries, as is the case of the agreements of Ridesa with Mexico and Paraguay, and countries of other continents, such as Australia, aiming acclimation of the Brazilian varieties in these countries.

The varietal improvement, obtained through transgenic techniques has also advanced considerably in recent times. Para solucionar este problema, recientemente IAC ha construido una cámara de fotoperiodo en su Centro de Caña, ubicado en Ribeirão Preto, SP, que permite emular las condiciones de luz, la humedad y la temperatura necesarias para la floración y consiguiente cruce entre las diversas variedades, que también pueden tener períodos de floración no compatibles entre sí.

Además de las variedades disponibles para las plantas brasileñas, allí también se ofrece tecnología a otros países, como es el caso de los convenios de Ridesa con México y Paraguay y países de otros continentes, como es el caso de Australia, dirigido a la aclimatación de variedades brasileñas en estos países La mejora de las variedades obtenida mediante técnicas transgénicas también ha avanzado considerablemente en los últimos tiempos. The reality of Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) in the Brazilian sugarcane segment Andre Ricci Supplier and manufacturer of the largest boiler of the sugarcane industry in Latin America burning bagasse and cane straw through the combustion system in the bubbling fluidized bed, HPB-Simisa excels in the business of generation of thermal and electrical energy mainly through cogeneration.

Being efficient in an economically troubled scenario became indispensable. In the sugarcane industry, the equipment that composes the industrial part of a plant are closely connected to the final results. The latter stands out globally, as it is considered the largest in the industry. "Installed, today, the boiler of São Martinho Plant, in Pradópolis, SP, is the world's largest with a capacity of 300 tons of steam/hour, 68kgf/cm ² pressure and temperature of 525ºC", said the representative.

Now Renato Malieno Nogueira, president of the company, highlights the importance of new technologies and as a result of this new equipment.

"They will have the function of producing steam and electricity with global high efficiency justifying new investments and those assigned in the process of replacing old boilers of low pressure and operationally inefficient."

La realidad del Lecho Fluido Burbujeante (BFB) en la industria del azúcar y el alcohol brasileño Suministradora y fabricante de la mayor caldera de la industria del azúcar y el alcohol de Latinoamérica quemando bagazo y paja de caña a través del sistema de combustión en lecho fluido burbujeante, HPB-Simisa se destaca en el sector de generación de energía térmica y eléctrica, principalmente a través de la cogeneración.

Ser eficiente en un escenario conturbado económicamente se volvió imprescindible. En la industria del azúcar y el alcohol, los equipos que componen la parte industrial de un ingenio están íntimamente unidos a los resultados finales.

Pensando en esto, HPB-Simisa, empresa que suministra en régimen "turn-key" generadores de vapor de última generación y alto rendimiento, con alto contenido tecnológico, para la producción de vapor de proceso o para la generación de energía eléctrica, viene constantemente introduciendo mejoras en sus equipos, y consecuentemente, se ha destacado en el mercado principalmente por su mayor característica centrada en la confiabilidad y disponibilidad operacional de sus calderas durante las zafras o períodos necesarios de operación.

Localizada en Sertãozinho, interior de São Paulo, la empresa cuenta con ocho calderas comercializadas en el sector contemplando sistemas de alta eficiencia de combustión en ambiente de lecho fluido burbujeante, siendo que tres de ellas ya están en operación. “En total, los proyectos producen aproximadamente 2 mil toneladas de vapor/ hora. Las de Guarani unidades Cruz Alta y São José, y São Martinho, ya están funcionado”, cuenta Maurício Moisés, director comercial de HPB-Simisa.

Esta última se destaca mundialmente, ya que es considerada la mayor del sector.

“Instalada, actualmente, la caldera de Usina São Martinho, de Pradópolis, SP, es la más grande del mundo, con capacidad para 300 toneladas de vapor/hora, presión de 68kgf/cm² y temperatura de 525ºC", explica el representante.

Por otro lado, Renato Malieno Nogueira, presidente de la empresa, destaca la importancia de las nuevas tecnologías y el resultado de estos nuevos equipos. "Ellos

Las demás unidades fueron comercializadas al Grupo Cocal, unidades Narandiba y Paraguaçu, GranBio, y Odebrecht Agroindustrial, unidades Eldorado I y II. “La de GranBio, por ejemplo, será la primera unidad ya en instalación para producir etanol de 2ª generación. Las dos unidades vendidas para Odebrecht, unidad Eldorado, pasaran a ser las mayores del mundo con esta tecnología quemando biomasa de la caña de azúcar, recuerda Maurício Moisés. (AR)

"We cannot rely on luck. The legal requirements are designed to be fulfilled and not circumvented.

Hoy, es necesario evolucionar y crecer sustentablemente”, afirma Moisés.

Un ambiente más limpio no es el único diferencial. Seguridad también interfiere a la hora de la compra, ya que el inversionista busca equipos que inspiren confianza, aún más en un ambiente como el del ingenio, con diversos productos inflamables. “No podemos confiar en la suerte. Las determinaciones legales fueron creadas para ser cumplidas y no burladas. La transgresión puede salir muy caro”, alerta João Augusto Ribeiro de Souza, director ejecutivo del GSO – Grupo de Segurança Ocupacional da Agroindústria.

Both maintained their independent operations, and in the new partnership, each company holds a 50% stake, says Renato Malieno Nogueira, CEO of HPB-Simisa.

As a result of this new harvesting technique, it can be said that in recent times the reception and unloading sector in the industries is one where the greatest number of changes in both work strategy work and the equipment itself occur.

In regions with more traditional sugarcane cultivation, the existence of two systems in operation in a transitional form is common. In the expansion

Another aspect that motivated further development of new solutions in reception of sugarcane is the end of the washing, due to conservation practices in relation to the environment and the inability to wash the chopped sugarcane, operation that may cause loss of sucrose and introduce microorganisms which disturb the fermentation process for obtaining ethanol.

Within this new reality, the feeding tables, clutches and other accessories for unloading and handling of the sugarcane will become obsolete, just as it happened with the storage buildings in sequence to mills equipped with overhead cranes for handling sugarcane stored for the nighttime grinding.

The sugarcane preparation sector is another who is suffering changes with the advent of mechanized harvesting. As you know, the sugarcane preparation is a fundamental operation in the mills, because they depend on the mills or diffusers to achieve the highest degree of extraction and also the consolidation of the raw material necessary to maintain the capacity of high processing in the extraction.

Traditionally, the sugarcane preparation is done by choppers and shredders, a system developed to operate with whole sugarcane However, with the fully mechanized harvesting, there are now systems that employ only the shredder for the preparation of 100% of the chopped sugarcane, eliminating the use of the chopper.

Cosecha Mecanizada pide nuevos conceptos en la recepción y preparación de la caña Caña de azúcar picada y eliminación de lavado requieren nuevos métodos de trabajo El aumento acelerado de la cosecha mecanizada, particularmente en las áreas de expansión de la cultura de la caña de azúcar y en la Región Centro-Sur, en lugar de quemar la paja y posterior corte manual ha estimulado a técnicos y fabricantes a desarrollar nuevos métodos de recepción de caña en la industria.

Como resultado de esa nueva técnica de cosecha, se puede afirmar que en los últimos tiempos el sector de recepción y descarga en las industrias es aquel donde el mayor número de modificaciones tanto en la estrategia de trabajo como en los propios equipos.

En las regiones productoras de caña más tradicionales, es común la existencia de dos sistemas en funcionamiento, en una forma de transición. En las regiones de expansión el corte mecanizado ya ha alcanzado el 100% del área cultivada.

Un otro aspecto que ha motivado aún más el desarrollo de nuevas soluciones en la recepción de la caña es el fin del lavado, debido a prácticas de conservación en relación con el medio ambiente y la imposibilidad de lavarse la caña picada, operación que puede causar la pérdida de sacarosa e introducir microorganismos que perturben el proceso de

fermentación para la obtención del etanol.

Dentro de esta nueva realidad las mesas alimentadoras, garras / embragues y otros accesorios para descarga y manejo de la caña de azúcar se van convirtiendo en una cosa del pasado, así como hace tiempos ocurrió con los predios de almacenamiento en secuencia a los molinos equipados con grúas para el manejo de la caña de azúcar guardada para la molienda de la noche.

El sector de preparación de la caña es otro que está sufriendo cambios con la llegada de la cosecha mecanizada. Como todos sabemos, la preparación de la caña es una operación fundamental en las Plantas, ya que de ella dependen los molinos o difusores con el fin de lograr el mayor grado de extracción y también la densidad de la materia prima necesaria para mantener la capacidad de procesamiento elevada en la extracción.

Tradicionalmente, la preparación de la caña es hecha por trituradores y desfibradores, sistema desarrollado para funcionar con cañas enteras. Sin embargo, con la cosecha totalmente mecanizada, hoy existen sistemas que emplean sólo el desfibrador para la preparación de 100% de la caña de azúcar picada, eliminando el uso de la picadora. The introduction of the shredders as preparation equipment of sugarcane in addition to the chippers in the end of the 70s was the fundamental to obtain the current rates of extraction of sucrose in sugarcane industry in Brazil.

Essential to the operation of the diffusers, the shredders also made possible a significant improvement in the performance of mills, as well as extraction efficiency, such as the regularity of grinding.

The Empral Piracicaba, company responsible for introducing many new concepts and improvements in extraction and preparation systems, such as the use of crushers in larger input and output of the grinding sets developed a shredder applicable to plants receiving 100% of the chopped sugarcane mechanically harvested. This is the Single Vertical Shredder, or DVU™, which is manufactured by Simisa in Sertãozinho-SP. Unlike the classical system of reception by feeding tables, metal conveyor, chipper and shredder, the DVU™ eliminates the metal conveyor and knife sets that precede the shredder.

Se trata del Desfibrador Vertical Único, o DVU®, que es fabricado por Simisa de Sertãozinho-SP A diferencia del sistema clásico de recepción por mesas alimentadoras, cintas transportadoras metálicas, trituradores y desfibrador, con el DVU® se elimina la estera metálica y los juegos de cuchillos que antecedían el desfibrador.

En ese sistema, la caña picada proveniente del campo se descarga directamente sobre una cinta transportadora metálica corta que alimenta una de goma que se encarga de alimentar directamente el Desfibrador DVU®, porque no hay más necesidad de cuchillos niveladores, picadores o cilindros alimentadores y esparcidores.

El Desfibrador DVU® se presenta en tres opciones de índice mínimo de células abiertas (open-cell) de 80, 85 y 90% con capacidad de hasta 1400 TCH. Su mantenimiento se simplifica mediante la adopción de un sistema hidráulico patentado para sacar los martillos del interior del desfibrador, que también es desarrollado por el personal técnico de EMPRAL Piracicaba, llamado SMH®.

El uso del Desfibrador DVU® presenta la ventaja de simplificar enormemente el sistema de recepción de caña en la Planta, eliminando Cintas transportadoras de gran tamaño, juegos de cuchillos sus respectivos accionamientos y accesorios, lo que representa un ahorro de hasta el 45% en la inversión en comparación con el sistema convencional de picador/desfibrador, además de promover una reducción del 20% en los costos de mantenimiento y 24% en el consumo de energía. In this system, the chopped sugarcane from the field is unloaded directly into a short metal conveyor that feeds a rubber conveyor which directly feeds the DVU™ Shredder, because there is no longer a need for grader knives, choppers or feeding rollers and spreaders.

Dry Cleaning System The removal of burnings and replacement of the manual cutting by the mechanized one, brought a new perspective in terms of energy which is the use of straw as fuel.

In parallel, when receiving the sugarcane in the mills, as conservation resource, water is no longer used in the process of removal of organic impurities and minerals that come from the sugarcane field.

Focused on those changes in procedures for harvesting and reception of sugarcane, Sermatec Zanini with technology of Empral Jaboticabal offers a dry cleaning system that can operate both for whole sugarcanes, coming from manual cutting, as for the chopped resulting from mechanized cutting, which is particularly advantageous for plants that operate with the two modes of cutting.

Using the straw With the progress of mechanically harvesting of sugarcane replacing the traditional harvest done manually, new perspectives of waste recovery after the cut have emerged, as the straw that constituted the sugarcane leaves and which were previously burned in the field to facilitate the cutting of the manual procedure.

In order to take advantage of this material, now available, manufacturers of machinery and plants have sought to develop methods and equipment which enables the use of straw as fuel and thus, generate additional energy, with consequent increase in industry revenue, since the amount of available straw is the order of 12 tons per hectare on average.

The manufacturers of agricultural machinery have presented equipment specially developed for the division, collection, consolidation and shipping of this straw left in the field after the harvest of sugarcane. These implements even allow determining the amount of straw to be collected, since a certain amount of straw on the field should be left in the field depending on the climate and soil type of the region for providing a cover which is necessary to maintain adequate conditions of moisture in the soil.

Since the straw is a bulky and low density material to be transported to the industry, it needs to be compacted in the shape and tied

bales, which are then loaded onto trucks provided with their own bodies for this purpose. All these operations are conducted through a device attached to a tractor.

In industry, there must be facilities to receive and store this material, as well as systems for disassembly and unpacking the bales for later use.

To take into account the importance of straw as raw material for the production of energy, it is estimated that sugarcane production is expected

to increase around 25% in the next decade. In these circumstances, the amount of straw produced by sugarcane is expected to reach a figure of around 130 million tons in the 2020/2021, according to the CTC, which in terms of energy is producing nearly 110 million megawatt/ hour enabling a large increase in energy that can be marketed and consequently become an important revenue for the sugar energy mills. Aprovechando la paja Con el avance de la cosecha de caña de azúcar de forma mecanizada para reemplazar la tradicional cosecha hecha manualmente surgieron nuevas perspectivas de utilización de residuos posteriores al corte, como la paja que constituían las hojas de caña y que previamente eran quemadas en el campo para facilitar el procedimiento de corte manual.

Con el fin de aprovechar ese material, ahora disponible, fabricantes de maquinaria y Plantas de energía han tratado de desarrollar métodos y equipos que permitan el uso de la paja como combustible y así generar energía adicional, con el consiguiente aumento de los ingresos de la industria, ya que la cantidad de paja disponible es del orden de 12 toneladas por hectárea en promedio.

Los fabricantes de maquinarias agrícolas han presentado equipos especialmente desarrollados para

el hileramiento, colecta, densificación y transporte de esa paja que fue dejada en el campo después de la cosecha mecanizada de la caña de azúcar. Esos instrumentos permiten incluso determinar la cantidad de paja para ser recogida, ya que una cierta cantidad de rastrojo debe dejarse en el campo, dependiendo del clima y el tipo de suelo de la región, para proporcionar una cubierta, que es necesaria para mantener las condiciones adecuadas de humedad en el suelo.

La paja siendo un material voluminoso y de baja densidad, para transportarse a la industria, necesita ser comprimida en forma de fardos y amarrados, que luego se cargan en camiones equipados con carrocerías propias para esa finalidad.

Todas esas operaciones se realizan a través de un equipo acoplado a un tractor.

En la industria, es necesario que haya

instalaciones para recepción y almacenamiento de este material, así como sistemas de desmontaje y descompresión de los fardos para su posterior utilización.

Para tener en cuenta la importancia de la paja como materia prima para la producción de energía, se estima que la producción de caña debe aumentar alrededor 25% para la próxima década. En esas circunstancias, la cantidad de paja producida por los cañaverales deberá alcanzar una cifra de alrededor de 130 millones toneladas en la cosecha de 2020/2021, según la CTC, lo que en términos de energía representa una producción de casi 110 millones de megavatios/hora, lo que permite un gran aumento en la energía que podrá ser comercializada y como consecuencia tornarse un ingreso importante para las Plantas sucroenergéticas. The conveyors are vital elements in a plant, whether for transporting sugarcane from the reception to the extraction sector, as to supply bagasse to the boilers for power generation.

Such equipments must be properly designed and equipped with materials and components of higher quality, because any interruption in its operation can cause serious problems in the continuity of production processes and even total plant shutdown.

Grader knives, chippers and shredders are machines that perform heavy work and need robust drives that continuously work under severe conditions.

With the increasing electrification of the drive of mills in Brazil, the electric motors are also being employed in replacement of the steam turbines in the equipment drives for the preparation of sugarcane.

WEG, a Brazilian multinational company headquartered in Jaraguá do Sul-SC, is well known in the sugarcane industry by supplying electric motors applicable to its various process industries, including the preparation of the sugarcane.

The wound-rotor motors provide high torque with a reduced current at startup, these characteristics are appropriate to drive chippers and shredders, equipments that, due to the massive nature of the operation have high inertia and high resistance conjugates.

These motors can be supplied with fixed brushes where necessary to maintain the external resistors to the rotor circuit. Another option is the use of motorized or maneuverable brushes, where external resistors are inserted only for the motor and the brushes are in contact with the slip rings only during the engine starting. After starting the operating system, the rotor is short-circuited and the brushes are raised automatically and the engine will operate as a motor rotor cage. (FPM)

La preparación de la caña es esencial para el sector de la extracción, ya sea por molienda o por difusor, tenga un rendimiento adecuado tanto en términos de extracción, como de capacidad de procesamiento.

Cuchillos niveladores, picadores y desfibradores son equipos que ejecutan un trabajo pesado y requieren accionamientos robustos y que trabajen continuamente bajo condiciones severas.

Con la creciente electrificación del accionamiento de molinos en Brasil, los motores eléctricos también están siendo utilizados en reemplazo de las turbinas a vapor en el accionamiento de los equipos de preparación de la caña.

WEG empresa multinacional brasileña, con sede en Jaraguá do Sul-SC, es bien conocida en el sector de etanol de azúcar o sucroenergético por proveer motores eléctricos para sus diversos sectores, entre ellos, la preparación de la caña de azúcar.

Para los juegos de cuchillos y desfibradores WEG ofrece dos opciones de motores para accionamiento que se aplican según las características de los equipos de cada cliente: rotores tipo jaula y rotores bobinados, también conocidos como “anillos”.

Estos motores están disponibles en hasta 50.000 kW de potencia y voltajes de hasta 13,8 kV. Los motores con rotor del tipo jaula son versátiles y tienen además un excelente rendimiento, requieren poco mantenimiento y reducida inversión, lo que los hace una opción adecuada para accionamientos de la preparación.

Los motores con rotores bobinados proporcionan un alto esfuerzo de torsión con una corriente de arranque reducida, esas características son aptas para accionamiento de trituradores, desfibradores, equipos que debido a la gran masa y naturaleza de la operación presentan gran inercia y conjugados de resistencia elevados.

Esos motores pueden suministrarse con escobas o cepillos fijos en donde es necesaria la permanencia de resistores externos al circuito rotórico. Otra opción es el uso de escobas motorizadas u operables, donde las resistencias externas se insertan solamente para partir el motor y las escobas /cepillos quedan en contacto con los anillos colectores sólo durante el arranque del motor. Después de entrar en operación, el rotor es cortocircuitado y las escobas o cepillos se levantan automáticamente y el motor funcionará como motor de rotor de jaula. (FPM)
