ETHANOL CHALLENGES Ensuring competitiveness regarding gasoline is one of the main challenges Fabiana Marques, from São Paulo, SP The Brazilian sugar energy industry scenario for 2020 can be seen as a chance of a market lifetime, although some challenges are needed to be overcome. It was the theme of the speech from the president of Unica (Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association), Elisabeth Farina, during the Ethanol Summit 2013 opening that occurred in the city of São Paulo between June 27-28. Farina has pointed out the definition of the regulatory environment and the destination of flexible-fuel vehicles as being some of the main priorities of this sector that urgently need attention in order to start growing back. According to Unica´s estimates, the fleet of flexible-fuel vehicles in Brazil is more than 20 million of vehicles. However, nowadays only a third of these vehicles use hydrous ethanol then having a huge potential to be occupied. In the last year, while GDP increased less than 1%, the increase of light fuel consumption reached almost 8% in Brazil. “Until 2020, an increase in consumption of only
50% is expected, volume which will have to be largely met by the increase of ethanol supply if we do not want it to be supplied by imported gasoline”, stated. The executive made clear that there are several bottlenecks to be solved, especially concerning the competitiveness safety of biofuel in front of fossil fuel. According to Farina, the current situation of ethanol in Brazil is one of the most
typical examples of product in which environmental, social and public health attributes are not added to market price. While gasoline´s negative environmental effects are also not calculated in its market sale price, it makes the biofuel competitiveness difficult. “Public policies must focus on it, recognize positive externalities of clean and renewable fuels, creating incentives in the right direction”, concluded.

Technology and infrastructure innovation are essential to reach competitiveness According to the vice-president of BNDES (Brazilian Development Bank), Wagner Bittencourt, in the BNDES view the Brazilian sugar energy industry needs to invest in two pillars to progress: innovation, either industrial or agricultural, and infrastructure. “The plants are competitive inside the fence, not outside the fence. For that reason, BNDES has supported initiative for improvements in these terms”, says. Regarding to investments, Bittencourt reported that, this year the bank will probably get back to the historical levels of disbursement for the sector, reaching R$ 6 billion. The amount represents growth compared to last year, when R$4 billion were funded. "From 2008 to 2012, the bank disbursed around R$ 30 billion. The investments resulted in the modernization of plants and expansion of plants and crops. Until April, the amount was approximately R$ 3,3 billion", informed. The deputy of the Europe Union of Denmark, Britta Thomsen, has participated of the event opening, and supported Brazilian ethanol as one of the solution for the production of clean and renewable energy of the world. “I believe biofuel from sugar cane can be part of a more sustainable path. It is needed to put an end to the myth, existing in part of the European community, that the Brazilian sugar cane occupies the space that would be designed to plant food, or that the sugar cane is planted in Amazônia”, says. The parliamentarian said that she has great expectations for the production of advanced biofuel. In her opinion, with the implementation of this type of fuel in Europe, the debate between food versus nourishment would be no longer relevant. Besides, employments would be generated in this sector. (FM)

The future of biofuel depends on current changes Fabiana Marques, from São Paulo, SP The future of biofuel depends on the adoption of public policies that bring predictability. Only this way will it be possible to attract investments to the sector. “The current issues need to be faced, so that we have a very good future”, stated the director of CBIE (Brazilian Center for Infrastructure), Adriano Pires, when participating in the panel “Cenários 2020: para onde caminham os biocombustíveis” (Scenarios 2020: where biofuel isheading to), held at the Ethanol Summit 2013, occurred between June 27 and 28 in São Paulo. According to Pires, the introduction of the American model of renewable biofuel gradual adoption would be a good strategy for the Brazilian market, allied to a predictability policy. For him, the secret for ethanol success in the United States is the partnership between oil companies and ethanol producers. “In the United States, biofuel is a gasoline complement, and not a competitor. If we understand that ethanol is a complement, even pricing gets better”, suggested. The ex- secretary of commerce of the United Sates, Carlos Gutierrez, has pointed out that the development and marketing of cellulosic ethanol can change this situation in the United States, because ethanol then would become the gasoline substitute, and not only its complement. “This is the ethanol challenge”, stated. And he expressed together with Pires that it´s not possible to invest without long-term guarantee, but added that in the United States there is also not certainty. Gutierrez also talked about the discovery of a kind of gas in the United States, shale gas, and about how it may cause a revolution in fuel sector, once the gas should be used for public transportation, and for loads in short distances.

Biofuel: investments in new technologies are essential For the vice-president of Amyris, Joel Velasco, despite the lack of public policies, Brazil is a good destination for international investors interested in the biofuel production and development. Velasco suggested that the biofuel sector is also aiming at other markets, and invests, for example, in sugar cane bioproducts. “Only 50% of each barrel of oil is headed for gasoline production. We should do the same with sugar cane”, stated. For Mariângela Rebuá, general director of
10
BIO&Sugar
Biofuel Department of MRE, part of the solution for renewable fuel is the investment in the development of new technologies. “From the international point of view, the key factor for the competitiveness is the investment in technology development”, says. Velasco also emphasized the necessity of investments in technology, and added that if Brazil does not invest as soon as possible, they will have to pay royalties for the use of these technologies in
the future. For the global president of the sugar cane division from the American multinational Syngenta, Daniel Bachner, the investments must also be done in the agricultural area, focusing on the increase of field productivity, and not only in the industry. “The average in Brazil is 80 tons per hectare, while a large number of producers in São Paulo already achieve a higher number. Technology is already there and we must apply it”, says.

“Why invest in the industry? Simple, because it will grow” Vasco Dias, CEO of Raízen, is emphatic when analyzing the future of the sugar energy industry and bets on its growth André Ricci, from São Paulo, SP Historically, hard times serve as a springboard for the rising of pillars of the sugar energy industry. Thus, at least in 1975, with the arrival of Proálcool that triggered the advent of flex, which last June 28, has set the mark of 20 million vehicles sold in Brazil with this technology. However, 2012 has arrived and along with it a crisis in all areas. Lack of investment, low productivity and bad weather are some of them. Seeking solutions, industry leaders gathered in São Paulo, to try to identify the main reasons why the entrepreneur focuses on the segment. Vasco Dias, CEO of Raízen, was succinct when giving his opinion. “Simple, it will grow”, he said. Luis Roberto Pogetti, President of the Board of Copersucar, showed demand as the main card to be explored. “Ours is a solid and growing market. We know that the world needs biofuel. We have to invest to be competitive and take advantage of the moment", he explained, noting also that the industry needs to produce more to operate at full capacity, eliminating idleness which exists nowadays in the units. Fábio Venturelli, president of Grupo São Martinho also attended the meeting. The representative cited the global importance of sugarcane to attract investors. “Look at the size of the industry. Its participation in the search for a more sustainable word is undeniable. We need to know how to explore this market with humongous potential”, he finalized.
PETROBRAS SHALL INVEST BRL 1 BILLION IN THE INDUSTRY IN 2013 Miguel Rossetto, CEO of Petrobras Biocombustível (PBio), said at the Ethanol Summit,

an event held in São Paulo, SP, in the end of June that the investments in expansion and quality of plants connected to the company shall reach BRL 1 billion just this year, including investments in biodiesel. "The growth of production depends on the primary investment. I see that today's biofuels are part of the global agenda and that there is space and demand for all types of energy".
The strategy goes on the opposite way of the current scenario of the industry, retracted because of the installed distrust, primarily because of political unpredictability. If the financial support is confirmed, the sugarcane crushing capacity of the company, which has three business groups and nine plants, shall increase from 21 million to 26 million tons. (AR)

Currently Isgec revenue’s U$ 700 million per year worldwide and aims to conquer the Brazilian market. In the following interview, the entrepreneur talks about the challenges and expectations of the company's endeavor to gain a prominent place in the industrial market of heavy machining of the sugarcane industry. JornalCana: What is your point of view about the Brazilian sugar energy market? Ranjit Puri: It is a very large and sophisticated market. It is not easy to work there because of the strong competitors in Brazil and the tax burden, which is high. But, we have experience in foreign markets: we are present throughout the world for 15 years exporting our products successfully. We know it is hard everywhere. In Brazil, we are trying to make an expressive entry. We have the natural difficulty of our company not being yet known in Brazil, but we are confident because we have already outgrown this same difficulty in other parts of the world, such as Central America, where we have already signed about 15 contracts, and we are dominating 90% of the market. The second problem is the distance between the two countries and transport logistics. What differentials Isgec offers to conquer this market? We’ve made many mistakes in the past and learnt from them. This experience makes us capable of entering such traditional market. Another factor is our production cost, which is lower, allowing us to market the products with competitive price. What other markets the company wants to achieve in Brazil? At first, we focus on the sugar energy market, but we aim the gas sector. We have already delivered two boilers for this segment. The pulp and paper sector also interests us. Anyway, where there is biomass, oil and gas, will be watching. Do your products have similar technical qualities to the Brazilian ones? We have a high quality standard. Our plants are approved by the American Society of Mechanics and Engineering. Another sign of quality is that we have about 55 teams analyzing the operation of boilers installed. We set up the boilers at the plant itself, sending a team to coordinate and supervise the installation. We always have a representative of quality control and an engineer monitoring the installation. What is the demand of your equipments in Brazil and Latin America? There is still no way of measuring it. Our strategy is to focus on a client with great potential and dedicate our efforts on it, because we believe and understand that when we advance with it, the scenario will be more positive for us as well. Have you already closed any business in Brazil? We are in the negotiation process. Does the company manufacture all industrial equipment of a plant? Isgec is able to deliver a complete plant, because it has global partnerships that allow it.

ENTREVISTA - Ranjit Puri

Asean's free trade treaty should affect the global industry in 2015 Member countries are focusing on reducing sugar rates to levels between 0 and 5%, already in 2015 or 2018 Fabiana Marques, Ribeir達o Preto, SP The sugarcane industry in Asia will undergo some major changes in 2015, when the treaty of free trade within ASEAN - Association of Southeast Asian Nations begins to take effect. According to Suhrid Patel, representative of British consultancy company, LMC International, Asean's member countries are focusing on reducing sugar rates to low levels between 0 and 5%, as in 2015 or 2018. This reduction in rates will affect the sugar production and trade from the group's member countries, according to a report of the Department of Agriculture of the United States released in May. Philippines, for example, should have a major impact, as other countries have lower production costs, Thailand's case, which should take better advantage of the situation. Of these member countries of the Asian group, Thailand is a sugar net exporter and its sugar imports are almost null. Philippines is also a net exporter, but has a strong import protection in the domestic market and most of its exports are destined for the United States. While Indonesia is a sugar net importer and also has a strong protection for its own sugar industry. When all this protection in the sugar imports from the ASEAN region is eliminated, the production and exports of sugar from Thailand tend to increase, while in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines the effect will be reversed, with an increase in imports . "Greater integration within ASEAN will create new business opportunities for sugar producers in the region. But also will create a more competitive environment in markets that are currently protected, making it a potential threat to the producers with higher costs", said the consultant.

Thailand is the sugar producing country most benefited in this case The impact of trade liberalization among member countries can have positive and negative aspects, but certainly the country that will be benefited for sugar is Thailand, considered the only structural exporter in the region. According to Patel, for importing countries, an increased competition from Thailand can push down sugar prices in the domestic markets. “While this is good for consumers, it affects some higher costs domestic producers”, he explained. According to experts, for Myanmar, this can also be an opportunity. According to LMC's data, Asia will account for much of the increased consumption of sugar in the world and for this the production still needs to expand. Other sites are now more competitive than in the past and Myanmar is ideally located to help meet this growing demand. According to former Secretary of OSBC of Thailand, Prasert Tapaneeyangkul, the implementation of the free trade agreement is excellent for the sugar industry in Thailand because it can enhance the atmosphere for investment and trade promotion in the country. Moreover, regional integration will give Thailand a preference rate on Brazil during access to other ASEAN markets. “Our main importer is Indonesia. If the free trade agreement works, they will import more from Thailand and less from Brazil. So let FTA come (English acronym for free trade treaty) as soon as possible”, he joked. The KSL group director, Chalush Chammit, also believes that free trade can improve things in the region, especially in relation to exports. “Indonesia imports 2.5 million tons of sugar every year. With the new conditions, why not import this whole volume from Thailand?”, he asked. In Tapaneeyangkul's view, countries like Brunei, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam will also be greatly benefited by the treaty and have increased production. “In 2015, when there are no more frontiers, the investment, technology transfer, human capital and financial capital will magnify the business of sugar and ethanol in this region”, he stated. Brazil receives third germplasm collection in the world The novelty was presented at the end of June and can bring greater biological safety for the sugarcane industry André Ricci, from São Paulo, SP Brazil, the largest producer of sugarcane in the world, will receive the third germplasm collection in the world. It is a genetic bank that can represent the whole variability of the "Saccharum Complex", in addition to other genres that assist the development of the sugarcane. Explaining better, Marcos Landell, researcher of the Sugarcane Center IAC - Agronomic Institute of Sugarcane, who along with the Ecuadorian Raul Castilho, chairman of the Genetic Enhancement Breeding, was responsible for the project. “The Brazilian Enhancement Programs have their own gene banks to make the hybridization. But the genebank represents all variability of the “Saccharum Complex”, which brings us greater

biological safety", explains Marcos Landell. With this novelty, researchers can prevent diseases and pests that affect sugarcane, which have not yet arisen. “It is a strategic matter. Besides anticipating some points, it is possible to combat diseases that are now resistant and hinder our plantations. If we do not have this resource, we may be exposed to serious problems. We are the largest producer of sugarcane, nothing more fair than having this collection in Brazil", says Landell. The location of the germplasm gene bank has not been defined yet. The negotiations indicated the Sugarcane Center of the IAC, in Ribeirão Preto, SP to be the place chosen. “Regardless of the place, our purpose is to promote a shared management of this project”, says Marcos Landell.
Turbo filter allows larger flows when removing micro particles Fulvio Pinheiro Machado Consultant of B&S International Within all new equipment and techniques that have been implemented in the treatment of broth, the turbo filters introduced by Mecat are definitely worth mentioning, for providing an effective cleaning of the broth, including micro particles that previously could not be removed by simple filtration. These turbo filters were developed from a new concept, without the use of centrifugation, pressure or vacuum, methods which were conventionally adopted. The turbo filters are devices that operate in a different way, through dynamic and continuously direction of the fluid to be filtered against the static filtration cylinder wall, providing an effective separation of insoluble micro particles found in the broth.
Turbo filters to remove micro particles Turbo filtros para remoción de micropartículas
Although they have a compact construction, occupying a minimum of floor area in the factory, the turbo filters allow broth flow up to 300m3/ h of broth per equipment. In addition, they provide a continuous filtration work, without variation of efficiency by obstruction or need for interruptions for cleaning as other conventional filtering systems. Another advantageous feature of the turbo filters is that during its operation, the contact of the fluid with the ambient air is avoided and it does not fragment the filtered particles, which causes the unit to have a low humidity level. As they are versatile equipments, the turbo filters can be applied in the treatment of mixed, clarified and filtered broth, in addition to the syrup, honey and vinasse, making these fluids with a high level of purity, much higher when compared with conventional methods of filtration.
Automation provides cleaner broth It is in the stage of clarifying the broth that mineral and organic impurities which may interfere negatively in the subsequent phases of the production process of sugar and ethanol are removed. The nature of the raw material is constantly changing according to the variety of sugarcane being processed, as well as other factors such as the increase of mineral impurities in the broth, has a decisive influence on the results of the decanter operation. Since these are wide variations, it is desirable to have a control system that allows at the end of the treatment process that the broth is kept as uniform as possible and with a low turbidity. When the sludge is too thick, it can cause damage to the chips and can also increase the turbidity of the clarified broth. If too thin, it increases the recirculation of sugars by the process resulting in increased losses. Moreover, the fact that the sludge is subjected to temperatures close to 100ºC, highcapacity of scaling, high opacity and a critical relation between density and volume makes it very difficult to measure the "quality" of the sludge and, consequently, greatly hinders the control of its extraction of the decanter with a minimum of broth drag and consequently sucrose. The solution developed by Authomathika is the Control of Concentration µ-ICC 2.45 Compact which uses direct measurement of concentration by microwave. Calculating the concentration, density and proportion of dry matter and solids, which are displayed on a LCD display located on the transmitter and processor panel. The sensor equipment is installed directly in the process, while the transmitter and processor are housed in a compact panel equipped with LCD display installed remotely from a distance of up to 3 meters, thus avoiding temperature effects.
Sieve provides additional cleaning in the clarified broth Currently, the clarifier without trays has been preferred because it requires a lower retention time, about an hour, versus 3 hours of the conventional multiple trays, reducing by one third the required volume of the equipment. This is particularly interesting for new larger capacity production plants and also from the standpoint of process because it avoids loss of temperature while maintaining the sterilization of the broth. For a further polishing in the clarified broth, the Brazilian company EquilĂbrio offers among its line of sieves specially designed for the sugar energy industry, the Rotating Sieve for Clarified Broth. Designed to filter out the suspended solids still present in the output of the decanter, the equipment is able to meet flow rates up to 1000 mÂł/ h, with low maintenance, it also has an automated cleaning system, which allows keeping the aseptic conditions of the broth. "These benefits differentiate our equipment in

the category of sieves for filtering the broth from the decanter, causing users to have more security to include this model in their plant", says Danilo Daniel dos Santos, Administrative Manager of the company. The screens of the Sieve for Clarified Broth are made of stainless steel with longitudinal grooves of reduced spacing, which ensures the retention of smaller size impurities existing at this stage of the process. Another important feature is that "in addition to the sealing required to maintain the temperature, the inclination of the filter section has been studied in order to ensure maximum efficiency of the straining", adds Santos. Recently, EquilĂbrio acquired a new machine for the manufacturing of stainless steel screens of continuous groove. "The investment in new machinery makes us more competitive which benefits the market", said Carlos Alberto Celeste Jorge, president of the company. (FPM)

Software allows to asses changes in the industry What are the implications resulting from changes in the quality of raw material for the industrial yield? What does this mean in terms of cost or profitability? What changes when producing more ethanol than sugar? How much excess energy can be generated? When evaluating the performance of new or existing industrial plants these are recurring issues in the day to day work. It is practically impossible to obtain a rapid and conclusive response without having to make many queries and calculations. To avoid loss of time and uncertainty, it is necessary to have a handy tool to facilitate getting a quick answer to all of these questions. This is what SugarSoft proposes with this new: the Balance 200. It is a software able to calculate in a split second all the implications of any changes arising from the raw materials, the production mix of sugar and ethanol and other parameters of the industry, providing results in terms of mass balance, energy balance and even the financial implications of these changes. Thus, in a short time, it is possible to outline scenarios and get answers to these variations, however small they may be in order to establish how important they will be for the final result of the industry and find the best policy for every situation. The Balance 200, despite the complexity of the calculations carried out, presents a simple and intuitive interface, with specific screens for the mass and energy balance
Mass Balance Screen of the Balance 200 Software Tela balance de masa del software Balance 200 for each process sector of the industry, including also the financial results. On each screen, a block diagram shows the equipment of an industry sector with their respective variables. On the left of the screen are the parameters through which sliders can be changed at the will of the user. The results are readily shown in various processing blocks. The Balance 200 is accessed online via web through subscription, which allows its use anywhere and anytime through PCs, tablets and smartphones, simply by having a connection to the internet and thus dispenses installing software on a single machine.

In exports, Marcelo Scatena, International Trade Manager, celebrates the participation rate, exceeding 70%. Scatena reminds that in some South American countries such as Colombia and Peru, for example, there is no off season for sugarcane. "This condition of operation requires more of reducers that need to be reliable and
should ensure a minimum of unwanted shutdowns." In Colombia, according to Jairo Pineda, Renk Zanini representative in the country, "The Torqmax® is unanimous and all plants with mills have Renk Zanini Reducers". "The Ingenio Mayaguez, located in the city of Cali is the first in the ranking of Colombia and also the first among the best mills in Latin America. Its mills are driven by three parallel Torqmax® reducers", adds Pineda. Still in Colombia, Renk Zanini is present in other important plants, such as the Ingenio Incauca, which holds the largest mill in the country, Ingenio Providencia, Ingenio La Cabaña and Ingenio San Carlos. In Peru, Renk Zanini reducers are present in important plants, such as Ingenio Pucala, Ingenio Azucarera del Norte, Ingenio Paramonga and the Grupo Glória, with Ingenio Casagrande and Ingenio Cartavio reminds Scatena.

Electric motors in drive convert more energy in a smaller space Although high power electric motors have been available for a long time and therefore capable of being used in the driving mills, there was a characteristic that favored the turbines in the past, it was possible to adjust its speed easily, unlike the motors. It was only after the development of solid state electronics, coming to power semiconductors, it was possible not only effectively control high power engines, both in low and medium voltage, but also perform starting and protection systems via programmable AC drives equipped with
microprocessors, such as those produced by companies like Siemens and the WEG Group. These features provided by the inverters eliminated limitations that the electric motors had when compared to turbines regarding speed variation, allowing its full use in driving mills. In addition to having a higher energy conversion efficiency, the electric motors enables more compact installation, since they have less work to rotate the turbines, reducing the need for intermediate reduction to drive to the rolls of the mill. As an additional advantage, the engines also
enable the use of simpler and less bulky foundations than the classic drives, resulting in savings of materials and deployment time. Another advantageous feature of the engines is to dispense the elaborate steam pipes and their accessories such as turbines. The flexibility of its use enabled the use of new methods of driving, ranging from the complete three roll mill, including the feeder roller or "pressroller", through the activation of only one roll, in case of re-powering existing mills, to the individual drive for each roll of a three roll mill. Planetary provide drive options The system of broth extraction is increasingly more efficient, not only by the greatest attention with the setting of the mills, but also through electrification and individualization of planetary gearbox drives, that is what it Vicente Junior, Commercial Coordinator of TGM Transmissões tells us. "When comparing the yields of planetary drives with other technologies, there is a great and indisputable advantage for roll to roll planetary drives, with the possibility of having efficiency gains of up to 17%, transforming this difference into electric power to be marketed", he adds. In the end of 2012, the planetary gearboxes of TGM completed eight seasons in operation, which is an amount of more than 1.300 equipments in full operation in recent years. Under normal conditions, the maintenance of the planetary gearboxes is planned to end the cycle of five crops, by performing a standard revision with

replacement of items subject to normal wear such as seals, bearings and filters. In this last off-season maintenance, it was the turn of gearboxes completing their five-year cycle. However, after technical reports performed in the equipments of several customers, many planetary gearboxes proved to be in perfect condition to operate in another season, without the need for maintenance, due to optimal conditions in which they found themselves. "These customer’s gearboxes had their useful life extended, without the need for maintenance, simply by following the operation directions provided with the technical equipment, within the recommended limits of service factor (torque), in addition to being assisted by predictive and preventive maintenance, pay attention to lube oil, filter changes, hibernation done correctly during the shutdowns and other technical details of the recommendations contained in the operation manual", says Junior.
DVU® Shredder Desfibrador DVU®
Shredder is essential for diffuser and improves milling performance The introduction of the shredders as preparation equipment of sugarcane in addition to the chippers in the end of the 70s was the fundamental to obtain the current rates of extraction of sucrose in Brazilian sugar energy industry. Essential to the operation of the diffusers, the shredders also enabled a significant improvement in the performance of mills, both for extraction efficiency, and the regularity of grinding. With the significant increase in mechanized sugarcane harvesting, Empral Piracicaba developed a shredder applicable to plants receiving 100% chopped sugarcane. This is the Single Vertical Shredder, or DVU®, which is manufactured by Simisa in Sertãozinho-SP. Unlike the classical system of reception by feeding tables, metal conveyor, chipper and shredder, the DVU® eliminates the metal conveyor

and knife sets that precede the shredder. In this system, the chopped sugarcane from the field is unloaded directly into a short metal conveyor that feeds a rubber conveyor which directly feeds the DVU® Shredder, because there is no longer a need for grader knives, choppers or feeding rollers and spreaders. The DVU® Shredder comes in three options of minimum ratio of open-cells 80, 85 and 90% with capacity up to 1400 TCH. The use of Shredder DVU® offers the advantage of greatly simplifying the reception system of sugarcane at the cane plant, eliminating conveyor belts, knife sets and their respective drives and accessories, which represents a saving of up to 45% on investment relative to the conventional chipper/ shredder, and promotes a 20% reduction in maintenance costs and 24% in energy consumption. (FPM)
Leaders shall gather to create the global market for biofuels Fabiana Marques, from São Paulo, SP Representatives of international associations linked to biofuels gathered on June 28 to discuss the importance of creating a global agenda, during the second day of the Ethanol Summit 2013. There was a consensus among participants that the main obstacles of the international sugar energy industry are the trade barriers, tariffs or not, created by the countries. This may be the first step towards a global agenda. To Elizabeth Farina, president of the Sugarcane Industry Union, it is necessary to

eliminate those barriers that hinder trade. “It is important to have a global agenda. But if we all agree that the alliance is the way for a comprehensive development, why is there so much protectionism?” She asked. Asked about what would be more important, fight enemies or join the friends, Rob Vierhout, president of ePure - European Renewable Ethanol, said that first it is necessary to define the friends and the foes. “What bothers me the most is that we are not capable of having a mutual agenda. We need a policy to support us, we need to undo the myths”, he said.
Ed Hubbard, Legal Director of the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), agreed that, as leaders, it is necessary to work together to create this market. “I hope this discussion goes beyond the words”, he said. Meghan Sapp – General Secretary of the Partners for Euro-African Green Energy (PANGEA), said she finds ironic that this global market is formed only by Europe, USA and Brazil. “While my colleagues are fighting amongst themselves, we are missing opportunities to create this market in Africa for example”, she said.

European Legislation limits the production of biofuels The complex sustainability criteria of the European legislation for the production of biofuels limit the expansion of this market in the block. That was the main idea of the panel that discussed the European legislation on biofuels, on June 28, during the Ethanol Summit 2013 in São Paulo. The EU plans to establish the concept of ILUC to measure the indirect effects of land use in the production of biofuels. According to this concept, the biofuels not only advance on food crops, but cause these cultures to be moved to new locations, increasing the emission of greenhouse gases. The models used to perform this calculation are questionable and there is no consensus on the subject. To Géraldine Kutas, senior advisor to the president of Sugarcane Industry
Union, the risk of ILUC is simply end the European biofuel market. According to the CEO of ePure, Robert Vierhout, the criteria are very strict. ”The perfect is enemy of the good. While we strive to make biofuels to be perfect, the fossils are still being produced without any similar requirement", he said. The European Congresswoman for Denmark, Britta Thomsen, stressed that it is not easy to draft new laws. "We are different countries with different realities in Europe, there are 20 members to agree when we make a law. But we know that we need to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and expand agriculture, in addition to adapting the demand to the changes of land use", she added.
(FM)

Thailand works to increase sugarcane production by 20% Asian country increased sugarcane production in more than 40% in the last five years Fabiana Marques, Ribeir達o Preto, SP Thailand, the second largest sugar exporter in the world, should increase its production capacity of sugarcane in the coming years from the current nearly 100 million tons per season to 120 million tons. An increase of 20%. The statement was made by the former General Secretary of the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB, its English acronym), Prasert Tapaneeyangkul, during the 9th Sugar World Asia, which occurred in Myanmar in April. According to former secretary, who currently works as an environmental consultant in the sugarcane industry, Thailand has achieved amazing results in the expansion of the production of sugar and ethanol. In the last five years there has been an increase of over 40% in sugarcane production, which increased from 70 million tons to nearly 100 million. Last year, four new plants began to operate and ten others have received Cabinet approval and should be open in the next five years. Currently there are 50 sugar producing units with production capacity of 920 tons per day. With this new plant the capacity is expected to reach 1.2 million tons. According to data from OCSB in 2012/2013 season, which ended last month, Thailand produced 10.02 million tons of sugar. The result was higher than expected by the Office, which provided an output of 9.7 million. For Tapaneeyangkul, the increase in sugarcane production in recent years is the result of a combination of factors such as favorable weather conditions, increased acreage, the rise in the world price plus the entry in the Asian market. Thailand exported a record volume of 7.5 million tons of sugar this year. In 2011, according to data from OSBC, 6.71 million tonnes of the sweetener were sent out of the country.

Thai main challenge is to increase productivity The expectation for the sugarcane industry in Thailand is growing. OSBC estimates a sugarcane production for 2013/2014 from 110 million tons, which must be converted to 11 million tonnes of sugar. The integration of the Asian market, scheduled for 2015, will provide an opportunity for the country to export more within the block. According to Tapaneeyangkul, despite the good prospects for the sector in Thailand, the country still needs to increase its agricultural part, improve their productivity and efficiency, as well as the conditions of sugarcane prices paid to producers. Sugarcane production is mostly, about 80% held by small farmers in the country. “One goal should be to strengthen the producers's capacity and provide price stability", said. Still according to the former secretary of OSBC the main challenge is to improve the yielding, which is usually around 70 tonnes per hectare. “The yielding needs to increase, both on the farm and in the industry, this is our greatest challenge. We need to better focus on sugarcane varieties and choose the right seeds to be planted to help this result”, he stated. Now the director of the Thai group, KSL, Chalush Chinthammit, the biggest challenges are the prices for exportation. “At the moment we have everything to grow, except price for exportation”, he stated. Both Tapaneeyangkul and Chinthammit

believe to be necessary to seek diversify of the industry, expanding the ethanol and electricity production, and also focusing on the biochemical industry. Since 2007, in force in Thailand the mixture of 10% ethanol added to gasoline, known as E10 fuel. Most of the ethanol is produced from molasses. Currently the ethanol production capacity in the country is 3.8 million gallons per day, but the expansion in the sector should increase this volume to 12 million liters per day. According to Tapaneeyangkul, all sugar plants in the country cogenerate energy and sell about 75% of its production, but the numbers are still very low because they lack bagasse for cogeneration.
Ethanol of the future has an uncertain present
The sector must focus on sugarcane ethanol
Grow with sustainability. This is the motto said in various speeches promoted by industry events in recent months. The premise states that the strategic agenda of the segment requires developing technologies to increase productivity and generate ethanol from bagasse pulp, multiplying production without increasing the planted area. But the reality is controversial and divides opinions. It is possible to hear in the “backstage”, voices announcing that the sector is not intended to produce 2G ethanol. There are also enthusiasts who invest in plants and believe that soon the biofuel will be marketed on a large scale. The Bio&Sugar Magazine, interviewed some experts to hear their conclusions as to whether there is at present an effective future for the second-generation ethanol.
The development of second generation ethanol, like cellulosic ethanol, for example, it is not feasible for the Brazilian reality in the coming years, according to the corporate commercial manager of Bioenergética Tonon, Paulo Strini. During a lecture held in Sertãozinho, SP, on June 21, the speaker explained that its conclusion is not based on a technological issue, but in the profitability of production costs. According to him, the processes and industrial yields are not compatible with those achieved with the sugarcane alcohol. "The plant performance is lower, with a cost incompatible with what we have in the production of ethanol derived from sugarcane. The production of second generation ethanol is not the calling of the Brazilian industry. I believe that our focus is to produce ethanol from sugarcane, which is a biofuel that has characteristics similar to the cellulosic ethanol, with a widely dominated technology and with a competitive cost", he explains. However, Paulo Strini, suggests that some regions of the country can invest in 2G ethanol production, as in the cerrado, for example, where there is a limitation to plant sugarcane.
Ometto believes that sugarcane ethanol is paramount, but launches a 2G ethanol plant Technology is important for the development of future ethanol Despite publicly stating, on the morning of June 24th, at an event held in São Paulo, capital, that the technology called 2nd generation ethanol is expected to enter commercial scale with the sugarcane ethanol starting on 2015, Ometto corroborates with the speech from industry representatives, like the corporate business manager of Bioenergética Tonon, Paulo Strini, that the segment should focus on the production of ethanol from sugarcane and that the 2G ethanol agenda should be secondary to the niche. "If our main raw material is sugarcane, why create competitors? That way, only we will do it", said Ometto. Raizen launched this year a plant of second generation ethanol. The details of this investment were explained by Antônio Alberto Stuch, CEO of Raizen, at an event held on June 26 in São Paulo, SP. According to Stuch, Brazil has a vocation for the 2G ethanol production and explains it. "Today we cannot approve any first generation ethanol greenfield, since we have pressured costs and stagnant price due to the gasoline. The idea of the 2G technology is to dilute the costs. In that same hectare I can get 25% more ethanol. Actually, I have a huge dilution of cost, since I only increase production", explains the company's CEO. Asked about the burden of using enzymes from multinationals, Antônio Stuch, said the higher cost, in addition to biomass, is the enzyme. However, the company is studying a project to produce 2G ethanol which will give back to the group a return greater than the expense of production. “We cannot do anything without Rubens Ometto profit”, he said.
William Lee Burnquist, Manager of Strategic Development and Biotechnology coordinator of the CTC - Sugarcane Technology Center, which features a project of 2G ethanol, at the plant of São Manoel, countryside of São Paulo, SP, considered as one of the most advanced in the world, is convinced that technology is important for the development of future ethanol. "We are establishing a demonstration plant. Our project has a different system than the rest of the world. In this case, we engage a system that leverages the steam, fermentation and distillation to a traditional mill, allowing it to produce up to 30% more ethanol with the same amount of sugar", William Lee Burnquist said Burnquist. According to the Development Manager of the CTC, the project is done without large investments, but results in gains for the unit. "The idea is to take advantage of what already exists in the unit, increase production without tackling costs", he says. Asked if the amount of bagasse for 2G ethanol is sufficient, without compromising the thermal balance of the unit, William Burnquist said yes. “We have enough. Moreover, we have straw which can also be used, i.e., the entire thermal balance is calculated", he confirms.
