Masterplan & innovative housing in former harbour environment

Bachelor design Studio, autumn 2020 - spring 2021
Collaboration with: Bo Daenens, Mathijs Knevels, Anne Smet
Institution: KU Leuven
Teachers: Goedele Desmet, Jan Haerens
Location
Kattendijkdok - Cadix site, ‘t Eilandje, Antwerp, Belgium
Context description & site analysis
The Cadix site was an industrial area of docks and warehouses that was abandonned when the harbour of Antwerp expanded to the North in the 20th century. Today it is being redevelopped as a family friendly living environment. However, the neighborhood still lacks a feeling of community and ‘life in the streets’.
Masterplan & housing typologies

With its brutal scale, Rideau inscribes itself seamless in the former industrial environment. Located on the border between city and harbour, it articulates a new landmark in the Antwerp horizon. At the same time it frames the perspective to what happens behind through the openings (common gardens) on the groundfloor and several other levels in the building.
The ‘body’ of Rideau is elevated four meters above the street level to leave space for a ‘public plint’ with various (semi-)public parks, squares and other functions. Inside the ‘body’, innovative typologies with a variety of shared and private spaces and functions provide answer to different housing needs.
