On an Island or Two Simon Ashby

Preface _ If only I stand still, open my eyes and have an attitude of willingness, beautiful scenes and images are bound to appear wherever I may be. Sometimes, I am lucky enough to have my camera with me and I can capture the moment.

How did this book come about? I guess here, I have to start with the acknowledgements, and you will see the answer. My good friend Carlos Ferreira had commented many times on the images that I post on social media such as Instagram and Facebook and he had been urging me to put a book together with a collection of images I had taken on my travels in Asia. And voila, here it is. So, thank you Carlos for guiding me out of my comfort zone. Carlos has also been instrumental in the selection of images for this book.

I also have to say thank you to my wonderful wife, Lia, who took the portrait of me. Thank you to Lia and my children, May, Sam and Jessica who accompanied me on my various travels and who waited patiently whilst I fumbled and fidgeted with my camera to capture the images presented here.

This book aims to capture my impressions of some of the places I have visited in Asia. It includes images from Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya and Phuket in Thailand; images from Bali, Bintan, Yogyakarta and Banyuwangi in Indonesia; images from Hakone in Japan, Pulau Ubin and Singapore. The common theme with all of the images is that they are take on an Island in Asia, a far cry from my home island of the U. K. It covers mountains, volcanoes, lakes, rivers, seas and oceans, forests, wildlife and flowers with a smattering of cityscapes.

I hope you enjoy the images here and perhaps they bring fond memories of time you have spent in these places or fill you with a desire for wanderlust and to check them out.

Simon Ashby is an IT professional, photographer, songwriter and musician. He is originally from The U.K. but calls Asia his home since 2002. You could say that he traded that island lifestyle for a tropical island lifestyle, and today, he lives in Singapore. Simon’s passion for visual arts began when he was a small child intrigued by paintings using oil on canvas. He fell in love with impressionism and post-impressionism. His photography aims to capture his impressions of a place or situation.
