History of East 14th Street

In the state of California, in the city of San Leandro, there is a road that stretches from Oakland to Hayward. East 14th street is a long stretch of road that cuts through the city of San Leandro. The road spans from the North Hayward road all the way to the international boulevard in Fruitvale. Ever since the founding of the city, East 14th street has been one of the most important roads in the east bay. Starting from a simple dirt road, eventually getting cable cars set up and finally being paved over.

For the thousands of people living in San Leandro, this is the road they use to get to work, enjoy a meal or build their community. Without this street there would be a lot less sense of what San Leandro is. That being said, its typographic history of East 14th street also parallels the road itself. From paintings to metal type, from display letters to sans-serif, East 14th street still has both old and new typography to explore.
