EL MIRADERO CIVIC/EDUCATIONAL - EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY CENTER

LOCATION:

Glendale, California - 21,000 sq ft.

PURPOSE:

Ending discrimination against Latinx Families with children with disabilities.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Latinx Immigrant families face a lot of discrimmination, barriers, and do not have access to resources to begin with; having a child with a disability on top of this only makes it more difficult. California has the largest immigrant population than any other state with a lack of community and support for these families with a child who aquire special needs, El Miradero is one solution for these issues. While addressing the failures of local regional centers and offering programs that are unattainable, the interior design of this project offers new perspectives on these family struggles, promotes learning, human connection, freedom of expression, and provides a support system these families can trust. The facility includes healthcare, law services, educational spaces, sports and art programs to fufill the needs of these families.

03

THE PROBLEM Language minority children have a 55% lower chance of being placed in a special education program than those who speak English.

21,000 public school children in California were enrolled in special education programs last school year, 13% would translate into approximately 2,750 special needs children with an undocumented parent.

SeeAll Records is a retail space that’s specifically designed for those with Visual Impairments. All types include the effect in how you see overall (total loss of sight, vignette sighting, speckles or dots, double vision, color blind, ect) Users can experience 4 different zones with different color palettes specifically selected for those who are color blind to be able to percieve. 18

19

ABOUT VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS It is evident Visual Impairments aren’t highly considered in design minus minimal braille. Design elements like color, furniture selection, lighting, and even space planning is often not considered and only meets minimum ADA guidelines. Deuteranopia has weaknesses with greens, Protanopia has weaknesses with reds, and Tritanopia has weaknesses with blues. Regular Vision

Protanopia

Deuteranopia

Tritanopia

Through research the color palletes selected for SeeAll Records were carefully put together by referencing how these visual impairments perceive particular colors to avoid anything looking “muddy” or grey, further delivering a design curated to how they see objects and spaces.

CONCEPT: AUTHENTICATION OF HUMAN SENSE Showing those with all 5 of their senses a view of how these disbalities effect their every day life. Placing humans with all 5 senses out of their comfort zone to understand and raise awareness on how disabilities aren’t considered in designs we see and use every day.

CONCEPT: INTEGRATED CARTOGRAPHY

based on the layering and connection of elements including education, ethics, spirituality, and science. Cartography helps us to visualise relationships and makes it possible for us to perceive patterns and processes that are often difficult to express verbally. The physical layering and connecting of design elements will create a cohesive space that connects to the brand and surrounding city.

Instead of creating closed off areas for clients to meet with consultants, we wanted to create a few areas suitable for consultations that were made private by vertical repeating elements that were still a part of the rest of the store.

MEDITATION POD

The retail lounge is created to further a luxury experience. While their purchase is being prepared they can enjoy organic herbal tea’s in an ambient setting while having plants that are used in the products around them to show transparency of the brand and their ingredients.

LOUNGE MATERIALS
