The club ran a Scent Work Trial for Novice Interiors on Tuesday night 26th September at our club rooms at John Mitchell Reserve. We had 33 entries. The trial went really well thanks to our wonderful club volunteers Michelle, Richard, Kym, and Jan. Trials would not be possible without them. Lots of praise for the trial on the Scent Work SA page commenting on the well run friendly trial and lots of thanks went to our volunteers. Also thank you to Rachel Fagan our SACA Rep who did all the certificates for us on the night. Our Judge and Trial Secretary was club member Carmel Nottle and below you will find her critique and photos of the search area. Thank you to our sponsor Petzone Woodville for donating prizes for our place getters.

Julie Wallis Trial ManagerThank you to the GDCSA for the invitation to judge last night and for all the teams that came to play. Thanks to Julie, Jan, Kym, Michelle and Richard for doing such a fantastic job stewarding and Rachael for entering all the results.
When judging Novice the aim is to set a search that tests a dogs ability to locate odour and communicate this to their handler. Last night the hide was located under the front of the bottom chair in stack of chairs against a wall.
There wasn’t too much else in the space and dogs had room to come at the chairs from both sides and the front. As long as they went anywhere near the chairs they hit odour. Teams were given a generous 2 minutes.
Of the 33 teams that entered 30 teams made it to the start line of which 20 qualified. From the 10 teams that didn’t leave with a qualification two teams timed out and three alerted away from the chairs (two on the bench and one on the table). All of the other false alerts were on the chairs but too far away from the hide. Of the 5 that were too far away all but one had been to the correct place before alert was called, sometimes more than once.
Overall dogs completed the search well within the time. If the time had been 1 minute 18 teams still would have qualified. Although I expect handlers probably would have stressed if I had set that time. For those that took longer than 30 seconds it was generally because handlers doubted their dogs first alert and dogs had to prove to them two, three or even four times where it was. Lucky for some handlers their dogs were either stubborn or confident enough to repeat themselves multiple times much to the relief of all of us in the room.
