FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Enhancing Boca for Today and Tomorrow Do you ever stop and notice just how incredible Boca Raton really is? You don't have to take it from me. A 2018 study by Livability reported Boca Raton to be the 45th best place to live in all of America. WalletHub followed suit, naming Boca the 6th Best Florida city for finding a job. It's safe to say, both life and business are good in Boca Raton! While the Boca Chamber's mission is to promote and sustain economic prosperity, we fully understand the correlation between a prospering business climate and a thriving community that offers its residents the highest quality of life. For this reason, our commitment to enhancing community extends beyond the here and now, and strategically positions our city for a vibrant tomorrow. Our strategic efforts go well beyond just business. From our work in education, tourism, local politics and the nonprofit community, we have built a firm foundation for widespread and lasting success. This year, the Boca Chamber's Golden Bell Education Foundation is giving away a record-setting $94,000 in grants to Boca Raton public schools. Furthermore, Golden Bell is hosting its inaugural Battle of the Bands on Sept. 28, where local business professionals-turnedrockstars will battle it out on stage. You won't want to miss this excitement! Outside of our work in schools, the Chamber's Tourism Committee has officially announced its 2nd Annual Boca Restaurant Month. Last year, the celebration featured over 25 restaurants – encouraging residents and visitors to eat, stay and play locally while enjoying the incredible array of culinary experiences in Boca Raton. This year, Boca Restaurant Month expects to double its participation, creating an even greater economic impact and exposure for our local businesses!

President & CEO Troy McLellan

"Our commitment extends beyond the here and now, and strategically positions our city for a vibrant tomorrow."

In addition to our A-rated schools and world-class restaurants, the future state of our community relies heavily on electing the right officials to lead us forward. The Boca Chamber's political action committee, Business Leaders United (BLU-PAC) does just that. In June, BLU-PAC endorsed Mayor Scott Singer for Re-Election and Andy Thomson for City Council Seat A based on their pro-business positions. I highly urge you, your employees, neighbors and friends to vote in the August 28th Primary and Special Election. For more information on BLU-PAC's endorsements and the election polling locations, please see page 19. Lastly, we firmly believe that our community is only made stronger by the longstanding philanthropic entities that continue to give back. The Boca Chamber proudly presents Boca Chamber Festival Days, a month-long celebration in August, connecting our for-profit members with the nonprofit community. The goal is to raise funds and awareness for these deserving nonprofits. Please see the full line-up of events on page 9. We are thrilled to have two signature events coming up that present wonderful opportunities for you to connect with our great community. I hope you join us for a night of fun, food and friends as we celebrate Wine & All That Jazz at the Boca Raton Resort & Club on Saturday, Aug. 25. Our Annual Gala is slated for Saturday, Oct. 27, where we will recognize Chair Ethel Isaacs Williams for her two years of service and welcome Susan Saturday as the new Chair of the Board. The Boca Chamber is committed to enhancing our community. We encourage you to get involved, stay involved and help us in our efforts to continue to make Boca Raton the best place to live, work, learn and play.

Moving Forward,

Troy M. McLellan, CCE, FCCP President & CEO Connection Magazine | 3

Q&A

MEET PRESIDENT ROSS

Kevin Ross

President, Lynn University Growth & Opportunity

Q: You have been immersed in the Boca Raton community for years. What changes have you seen and how has that impacted your students and campus at Lynn University? A: There has been enormous development in and around Boca Raton creating opportunities for students that have never been available before. We think of our area as a midtown that’s booming with exciting new real estate, restaurants and entertainment. I can’t wait to see how it will evolve in the next year alone.

Future Focused

Q: What makes you passionate about serving Lynn University? Talk about your new strategic plan and what we can expect from Lynn 2025.

"Our university has been able to accomplish so much through a team approach, and we're not done yet."

A: Lynn University is defiantly optimistic about the future, and we’ve -President Ross always been that way. Our new strategic plan, Lynn 2025, furthers our mission to provide an innovative, global and personalized education that enables students to realize their potential. It establishes three priorities: engage constituents; elevate the Lynn experience; and expand programs, services, and capabilities.

Partnership with PULSE

Q: Lynn University has recently become the headline sponsor of the Boca Chamber’s PULSE (Business Professionals Under 40) Program. How does this partnership point to Lynn’s mission and strategy for its students and the community? A: Our mission is to prepare students for their future, and there’s no better way than with hands-on experience and interactions with successful people in their field. The PULSE program provides an avenue for not only the young leaders who work at Lynn, but also our most motivated students to make important connections with business leaders who were in their position not too long ago.

Something to Remember

Q: What is your favorite memory as President of Lynn University? How have you gotten to where you are today? A: My favorite memories are Lynn hosting the third and final 2012 presidential debate and completing our 15-year strategic plan, Lynn 2020, two years ahead of schedule. Our university has been able to accomplish so much through a team approach, and we love working at a place that’s not done yet.

Words to Live By

Q: What is something that people might be surprised to know about you? A: I play the guitar in a band called Wolfhawk. I started it in 2015 with a few university colleagues and friends after losing a bet during the university’s annual Celebration of the Arts festival and since then, we have played at events around town, including last year’s Boca Raton Bowl at FAU. Kevin M. Ross was named the fifth president of Lynn University, taking office July 1, 2006. He succeeded his father, Donald E. Ross, who served as Lynn’s president for 35 years. During his tenure as president, the university has made significant strides in support of its strategic plan, Lynn 2020 and now Lynn 2025. Under Ross’ leadership, the university has implemented a redesigned core curriculum, the nationally recognized dialogues; a first-year student experience titled The Citizenship Project; and a three-year undergraduate degree program. MEMBER BUZZ BOCA RATON AIRPORT & BORDER PROTECTION FACILITY OFFICIALLY OPENS

WALLETHUB NAMED BOCA RATON THE 6TH BEST CITY FOR FINDING A JOB

At 10:30AM on May 31st, the much-anticipated U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility officially opened at the Boca Raton Airport. The occasion was celebrated the previous evening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and reception, which was attended by many of Boca Raton’s government, civic and business leaders.

The Sunshine State’s economy has seen its fair share of storm clouds in recent years, with the Great Recession taking a significant toll on both the housing market and tourism industry. And it took another huge hit in 2017, as hurricane Irma cost the state 1.8 million outof-state visitors. But things are looking brighter of late, despite the natural disaster’s impact.

Festivities began with Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer cutting the ribbon at the CBP facility, which was followed by the reception inside the neighboring Privaira Private Aviation hangar. Attendees enjoyed light international fare and live steel drum music, before transitioning to the speaking portion of the evening. Airport Executive Director, Clara Bennett, began by thanking the numerous individuals, departments and organizations that helped bring the CBP facility to fruition. She then highlighted the significance of opening a CBP facility in Boca Raton. “Throughout its history, the Airport has served as a catalyst for economic growth, playing a pivotal role in the development of Boca Raton as a major hub for corporate headquarters and international commerce,” Bennett said. “Beyond the economic impact, the new facility will ultimately be about connecting the Boca Raton Airport to the rest of the world.” With the CBP facility now officially open, readers are encouraged to follow the Airport on their social media profiles and through the website at BocaAirport.com for news releases on the first plane, first jet, first Vet and first pet to utilize the CBP facility.

MULTI-MEDIA WORKS PRESIDENT FEATURED AS 'INSPIRING ENTREPRENEUR' IN VOYAGE MAGAZINE Karen Lustgarten, President of Multi-Media Works, Inc., is featured as an “Inspiring Entrepreneur” and “Boca Raton’s Rising Stars” in VoyageMIA magazine. The article in the online magazine resulted from an anonymous tip recommending Karen’s entrepreneurial journey as a story that would inspire readers. “I can only guess the tip came from an attendee at the presentation I gave at the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce a year ago,” says Karen. “In that presentation, I traced my entrepreneurial journey and received a standing ovation at the end. Attendees commented they found it inspiring, so I assume the referral to an editor came from that event.” To read the interview in "Inspiring Stories", visit www.voyagemia.com. Multi-Media Works, Inc. is a multiple award-winning company that exposes you in the media, only your remarkable parts. The mission is to discover, brand and promote remarkable you (Yes you are!) in video, PR, print and social media. With offices in Palm Beach and Broward Counties, Multi-Media Works is a Trustee member of the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce.

Florida’s economy is expected to reach $1 trillion in 2018, a number greater than that of all but 15 countries. And the unemployment rate is at just 3.9%, below the national average of 4.1%. But not everywhere in Florida provides the same employment opportunities. In order to help Floridians make all the right moves, WalletHub compared 135 Florida cities based on 16 metrics that collectively speak to the employment environment that can be found in each. We considered factors ranging from the number of job openings per unemployed resident and the average starting salary to the share of employers providing benefits and the length of the average work day. Overall, Boca Raton landed at #6 on the list of Best Cities for Finding a Job in Florida. Sarasota, FL came in at the #1 spot. Factors for the rankings included: job opportunities, employment growth, monthly average starting salary and unemployment rates. To view the complete list visit www.wallethub.com.

5 TIPS TO BETTER NETWORKING

Network Better By Greta Schulz

Schulz Business Sellutions 1. Which Organizations Do You Belong to? A common comment I get when talking about networking is, “I go to everything, I network all of the time, I go to everything in town!” In addition to simply being exhausted and collecting more business cards than a bowl at a tradeshow, you aren’t really accomplishing much. So, what should you do?

2. Be Choosy Be selective about where you network. Of course there are some obvious places that make sense; the chamber, a trade organization, a charity volunteer opportunity and a leads group. The Boca Chamber offers over 150 events each year, but it's important to be selective about which events are right for your business! From women's groups, to young professionals, to Ribbon Cuttings and Black Tie galas... there is something just for you.

3. Set Goals Go to a networking event with a purpose. Always set goals when you are networking. Look up the event attendees in advance and find two people you are going to have a conversation with. Follow up with them, grab coffee, look for strategic alliances!

4. Understanding Strategic Alliances A strategic alliance exists when you intentionally form a connection with someone to puruse a similar objective, but don’t compete with each other. This is your true purpose when you are networking, NOT selling!

5. Let Google Do the Work One of the best Google features for salespeople are Google Alerts. You need to have a gmail account and when you do, go to ALERTS. GOLDEN BELL & YEA!

Golden Bell

The Boca Chamber's Education Foundation Supporting K-12 Public Schools in Boca Raton The Golden Bell Education Foundation (Golden Bell) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that exists for the sole purpose of supporting the Boca Raton public school system and administering education programs that promote business skills and workforce readiness. Established in 1991, Golden Bell has granted $1.4 Million since its inception, and has impacted over 800,000 students in grades K-12. Each year, we invite all Boca Raton public schools to submit applications for a Golden Bell grant. The grant cycle is open from January through April. Funds are awarded to deserving and innovative programs. We are pleased to announce that $94,000 of grant money will be dispursed to Boca Raton public schools at the September Membership Breakfast on Thursday, September 13th. To learn more about how you can support the mission of Golden Bell, please contact Sherese James-Grow at (561) 395-4433 ext. 232 or sjamesgrow@bocachamber.

Each year, students speak at the Golden Bell breakfast to tell how a Golden Bell grant has impacted their education.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is an exciting program that transforms local middle and high school students into entrepreneurs. Through the nine-month long curriculum, students in grades 6-12 develop life skills, generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, and launch their very own companies. The program culminates with a shark tank style event as students pitch their ideas to a panel of investors. YEA! is held every Wednesday from 4:30 -7:30 p.m. at Saint Andrews School, September 2018 through May 2019. Do you know someone who would like to join our YEA! class of 2019? Are you interested in becoming a business mentor or learning more about sponsorship opportunities? For more information about the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, contact Sherese James-Grow at (561) 395-4433 or sjamesgrow@bocachamber.com. Garret Goodman and his company, Taste Tags, won the 2018 Investor Panel Competition. He competed at regionals in Rochester, NY.
