Connecting Members to Bridge Boca's Gap

I have been fortunate to serve as President and CEO of the Boca Chamber for 11 years, and it is with great confidence that I tell you the most rewarding outcome has been witnessing the development of impactful relationships built among members, community leaders and residents. In order to advance the Chamber's mission -- to Promote and Sustain Economic Prosperity in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County -- it is critical we understand that our members are also your neighbors. They are business professionals who are also your customers. They are mothers and fathers who care about their children's education and taxpayers who care about the quality of life of their community. The Boca Chamber not only strengthens the economy, but also works to enhance the community and create connections that go beyond business. Our Chamber is proud to offer hundreds of networks, annual events, membership breakfasts, after-hours events, leads groups and committee meetings each year. When we say there is something for everyone, we truly mean it. We are excited to have launched our newest program, The Small Business Exchange, on September 20th. This program brings small business owners together to discuss challenges they face and to brainstorm solutions, all with the end goal of assisting in the growth and success of their business. Where we see a need, we find a way to bridge the gap and connect members who share common goals. In August, we celebrated Boca Chamber Festival Days (BCFD). Throughout the month, the Chamber facilitated nearly 30 events that connected our for-profit members with the nonprofit community to raise funds and awareness for their charitable causes. We are very pleased to announce that a record-setting total of over half a million dollars was raised in just 31 days. For more information about BCFD, turn to page 8.

"We're here to help you make connections that go beyond business."

With the start of our new fiscal year Nov. 1, we also welcome new leadership. Ethel Isaacs Williams, NextEra Energy Inc., will succeed Jerry Fedele, Boca Raton Regional Hospital as the new Chair. We are grateful for the impactful leadership of Jerry Fedele, and we look forward to an exciting year ahead with Ethel Isaacs Williams at the helm. Join us on October 22 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club as we celebrate in style and honor the professionals who serve on our Board of Directors. From Connecting Members, to Advancing Commerce, to Protecting Business and Enhancing Community, the Boca Chamber could not positively impact our community without the support of our Chamber members. Whether we are business executives, parents, neighbors or friends, we are all members of this community, and it is the genuine connections that will keep us moving forward to enhance where we live, work, learn and play. Moving Forward,

Troy M. McLellan, CCE, FCCP President & CEO Connection Magazine | 3

Leadership Boca

Leads Groups There are five leads groups, each consisting of non-competitive businesses that allow participants to exchange leads and business advice in hopes of expanding business.

Ethel Isaacs Williams Chair, Boca Chamber Serving Her City

Q: What are you looking forward to most in serving as Chair? A: I look forward to building on the legacy of great leaders who have served as Chair of this great organization for the past 64 years. The Board of Directors’ primary role is that of governance and direction for the 1,500 member entities which constitute our membership, so it’s an honor to lead, but also to learn from them.

The Road to Success

Q: Tell us the story of what led to your current success...

"It's an honor to lead our membership, but also to learn from them."

A: My story is one of perseverance and optimism. As the youngest sibling of seven, I had high bars of expectation set before me, most of which were self-imposed. Regardless of the odds, no one can be better at being me but me!

Motivated by Design

Q: What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning? A: I am motivated to get out of bed because it means I have another opportunity to do my best in all aspects of my life. I can be my best in my work, my family and my community.

The Power of Connections

Q: What can you say to be true about the power of connections? A: The power of connections is real, because it is from making a true connection that relationships are created, leveraged and nurtured. It is from those nurtured relationships, that networks are expanded and one's sphere of influence is enhanced. I was officially introduced to the Boca Chamber almost seven years ago, and since that time, I have been afforded the opportunity to share news about my company, support local organizations, and meet many amazing people who live, work, learn and play in Boca.

Looking Ahead

Q: What do you hope to achieve as Chair of the Boca Chamber? What do you hope we can achieve together? A: I hope that together we share more across industry sectors, neighborhood boundaries and organizational structures so that we can truly unite around our core mission of CAPE (Connecting Members, Advancing Commerce, Protecting Business and Enhancing Communities). In doing this, we support the three primary arms of our organization (business, government and education) through the Chamber of Commerce, BLU-PAC, and the Golden Bell Education Foundation. Ethel Isaacs Williams serves as the Director of Corporate Engagement, Diversity & Inclusion for NextEra Energy Inc. She is responsible for developing corporate strategies and initiatives for employee engagement, diversity and inclusion, that support talent growth and development enterprise-wide.

TECH COMMITTEE Our Technology Committee functions as a collaborative forum, bringing together members of our chamber. Through these coordinated meetings, valuable new ideas and insights are generated to enhance our area’s growth as a technologycentered economy. Together, the Technology Committee and the Boca Chamber put the ideas into action, organizing events for business professionals so that they can stay ahead of the top advertising and marketing trends and interactive media. All of these events are entirely free for our members and for anyone in the community! If you attend these events you will hear from a variety of interesting speakers on relevant topics, and you will gain an opportunity to network. Haven’t made it to a previous Tech Forum? It’s OK, the next event in November will be a Tech-splosion! This event will feature technology experts in an interactive seminar about the hottest topics in technology from using LinkedIn effectively to mobile marketing. Jay Berkowitz, Owner of Ten Golden Rules, moderated the Aug. 25, Email Isn't Dead Tech Event.

WE TAKE CARE OF POLITICS, SO YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS Ensuring a pro-business environment where your company has the opportunity to succeed and thrive is a priority for the Boca Chamber. In order to provide that environment, it is critical that our elected officials understand the needs and demands on what it takes to operate a successful business. The Boca Chamber's Business Leaders United Political Action Committee (BLU-PAC) exists to endorse and fund candidates that are in alignment with the Boca Chamber's views and priorities regarding business. After a very thorough vetting and interview process of candidates running for the upcoming General Election, BLU-PAC has made the following endorsements:

With so much change in our political environment - it is critically important for you to vote. Not only do we encourage you to vote, but we ask that you encourage your employees to vote as well. Thank you for your support and for having a voice in the future of our great community and its continuing prosperity!

The Boca Chamber highly values its 100+ nonprofit members; they are an integral, defining component of our community. Not only do our nonprofit organizations employ thousands of local professionals, they improve the overall quality of life in our city, and most importantly, they provide critical support to the underserved.

The only thing sweeter than one of my pastry items is my experience of being a part of the 2015-16 YEA! Program. My name is Indira Fields and my online gourmet bakery business, Sweeter Things, an online gourmet bakery (, became a reality after completing the nine-month business development program offered by the Golden Bell Foundation through the Boca Chamber of Commerce. Through this opportunity, I was able to learn the skills needed to develop and operate a business from some of the best business minds who unselfishly volunteered their time and expertise. While it was challenging to complete the program during my sophomore year of high school, I learned valuable skills that I will be able to use throughout my life and career. All of the instructors were extremely helpful; however, I am extremely grateful to my personal mentor, Ms. Patricia Burdett. She shared helpful business insight and knowledge, advised me along the way, and has been one of my biggest supporters. She also introduced me to several influential business leaders including Mary Wong of the Office Depot Foundation. At the YEA! graduation, Ms. Wong offered me my first official catering event for her Wing Woman inaugural event. It turned out to be the biggest highlight I experienced through the YEA! Program. At the event, I was able to showcase my products and meet many successful businesswomen. Another major highlight was participating in the chamber’s Spring Business Expo, where community leaders and business owners had the opportunity to sample my products. This was great exposure for Sweeter Things.

Over the past three years on the City Council, I have come to appreciate the synergy created between the chamber and the city. This takes the form of its leadership’s ongoing commitment to support the city as it works to build a vibrant downtown, creating economic vitality for our residents. The chamber’s Government Relations and Economic Development committees each focus on the ongoing need to advocate for issues important to the chamber, its members and the city as a whole. Through BLU-PAC (Business Leaders United for Boca Raton – PC Inc), created 10 years ago, the chamber augments the efforts of its leadership and committees by supporting state and local candidates who embrace the idea of allowing businesses to flourish and prosper without unwarranted governmental interference. It is this close working relationship between the City Council and Chamber that fosters economic development and makes it the venue of choice for a majority of the corporate headquarters located within Palm Beach County. -Robert Weinroth

Thank You YEA! Sponsors

The Golden Bell Education Foundation is changing the landscape of education in Boca Raton. The Boca Chamber’s Education Foundation, also known as Golden Bell, is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation that was created for the sole purpose of supporting the Boca Raton Public School System, grades K-12. Founded by the Chamber's Board of Directors, the Foundation funds educational programs that promote business skills. Each year, we invite all Boca Raton public schools to submit applications for a Golden Bell grant. Funds are awarded to deserving and innovative programs. The Golden Bell Foundation’s Board of Directors convenes annually to review grant applications and select recipients. Recipients are notified during the summer and receive their grants at the Chamber’s September Membership Breakfast. With this newest round of funding, the Golden Bell Education Foundation is pleased to announce that nearly $60,000 was granted to Boca Raton public schools and scholarship programs in 2016! We ask that you consider donating to The Golden Bell Education Foundation. With your generosity, it is our goal to continue to give the gift of supporting our children’s future. A Letter From The Chair As a graduate of Leadership Boca 2015, I felt honored to be given the opportunity to discover my personal leadership strengths and find new areas where I could make meaningful contributions. I went on to serve as Co-Chair for Leadership Boca 2016 and I am very thrilled to serve as Chair for Leadership Boca 2017.

Sabita Ramnarace

I have had the privilege to partner and create lasting relationships with so many exceptional leaders from all over our community. Together we were able to become involved in charitable causes, connect with like-minded people and learn how we can make a difference in our community. Along with my co-chair, Lloyd Comiter of Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, we are looking forward to being a part of a growing network as we meet the participants of the Leadership Boca 2017 class. In addition, we will have the chance to meet with experts in the fields of government, health care, environment, education, social services, business, media, and much more. More important, we look forward to another year of providing unique opportunities to promote, expand and leverage the tremendous leadership resources of our community to bring about a stronger future for Boca Raton. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”-Helen Keller Sabita Ramnarace, Leadership Boca Chair 2017 Boca Raton Regional Hospital Chief Experience Officer

Leadership Boca Connection Story I met Jan Dymtrow of the Boca Raton Regional Hospital as a result of my participation in Leadership Boca Class of 2014. Jan knew my brother, Jeff, a doctor on the medical staff at the hospital quite well. When the earthquake struck in Haiti, she helped him coordinate the credentialing and travel arrangements for a team of BRRH doctors, nurses and ancillary medical staff to aid the Haitian community. After our Leadership Boca graduation in the spring of 2014, Jan offered my daughter, Romy, a 10th grade student at North Broward Preparatory School at the time, a summer internship. Romy helped create a menu of healthy meals for cancer patients. From this, Romy began to develop an interest in nutrition. Now a senior, Romy is spearheading the HopeGel initiative on behalf of the Food for the Poor Club at North Broward, for which she serves as president. Jan Dymtrow has been a role model to my daughter having taught her the value of giving back. Yet, despite my brother’s connection to her, I would have never known Jan without stepping out of my comfort zone and applying to Leadership Boca. Thanks
