Enhancing Your Community

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

The Boca Chamber exists not only to promote and sustain economic prosperity, but also to enhance where we live, work, learn and play in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County. We want the best for you and the best for Boca. Our hard work is displayed through advancement in programming for public schools, support for the nonprofit sector, preservation of our beautiful parks and beaches, and an unprecedented quality of life for residents. This year the Boca Chamber's Golden Bell Education Foundation is pleased to announce that nearly $60,000 was granted to Boca Raton public schools and scholarship programs for the 2016-17 academic year. These funds, which will be distributed across 21 local elementary, middle and high schools, will benefit programs like YEA! (The Boca Chamber's Young Entrepreneurs Academy) and will support education initiatives that are designed to better prepare our children for the future. In April, YEA! graduated 18 students who worked for nine months to create and launch their very own businesses with support from local volunteer mentors and corporate partners. This year's winner, Tia Jenkins, went on to present her company, "Switchy Shoes," at the Regional Competition. Read more about Tia on page 16. We celebrated our 10th anniversary of the Chamber's Diamond Award Luncheon this year, and in connection with this event, Chairman Jerry Fedele and President & CEO Troy McLellan serve their community at the Boca Chamber's Annual Community Cookout. created an amazing mentorship program for young women. Past Diamond recipients are paired with YEA! students to instruct, mentor and navigate the young entrepreneurs through their business development process. We're excited to be partnering today's leaders with tomorrow's.

"We want the best for you and the best for Boca."

In addition to enhancing education, our Chamber equally values the growth of the nonprofit sector, its 100+ members and the positive impact they have on the Boca Raton community. To celebrate, the 2016 Boca Chamber Festival Days (BCFD) will take place throughout the month of August. BCFD exists to connect nonprofit members with the for-profit community. We hope to see you out supporting the cause! Turn to page 8 for more information. Finally, I would like to extend an invitation for you to join us at two of our upcoming signature events. Wine & All That Jazz will take place Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Boca Raton Resort and Club. This is one of Boca Raton's largest wine tasting parties, and you won't want to miss it. Our Annual Celebration is slated for Saturday, Oct. 22, where we will honor the wonderful work that has been done by current Chairman Jerry Fedele and welcome Ethel Isaacs Williams as the newest Chair of the Boca Chamber. See you there!

Moving Forward,

Troy M. McLellan, CCE, FCCP President & CEO Connection Magazine | 3

DIAMOND MENTEE SPOTLIGHT A DIAMOND recipient is a Dedicated, Inspiring, Accomplished, Motivated, Outstanding, Noble, and Driven businesswoman. Every year, we have carefully selected a deserving recipient for this esteemed award – someone who has achieved success in her professional career and who continually makes a difference in our community. Our Chamber and our community are so lucky to have so many driven and vibrant female leaders among us. This past year, we marked the 10th Anniversary of the DIAMOND Award by honoring a “diamond in the rough,” who is a young jewel in our community, Rachel Zietz. We also unveiled a new YEA! mentoring program with the previous DIAMOND Award recipients. For the next year, all of the previous recipients will share their valued business insight, experience and talents with young entrepreneurs as they mentor the next generation of DIAMONDs. The Boca Chamber is fully committed to the success, development and growth of future leaders through the DIAMOND Mentorship Program. Here is what our DIAMOND mentees have to say about their experience thus far.

LEADERSHIP BOCA Serving as the Chair of Leadership Boca 2016 has been a tremendous honor and has exceeded all of my expectations. As Chairman, I had the opportunity to work alongside the Chamber team to deliver an impactful program for the 40+ participants.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS DAY

LEADERSHIP AT THE LANDFILL

We welcomed 44 future leaders in March 2016 and spent three months on the road learning about South Palm Beach County’s needs, assets and economic vitality. These professionals -- representing a vast diversity of industries -- didn’t hesitate to roll up their sleeves, soak in the information and enjoy the experiences they were provided. The field trips covered topics like Environment, Government, Health/Human Services, and more. The depth of the program and the passion of everyone involved made Leadership Boca 2016, once again, a valuable platform for everyone that strives to excel in their personal careers while making a difference in our communities, cities, states, and possibly beyond the borders of our country. Are you interested in broadening your horizon and gathering experiences that will help you strive for the best in you, while meeting individuals that will increase your networking abilities? Then you will be a great fit for Leadership Boca 2017! The Leadership Boca Program will not only give you the opportunity to learn more about your community, but most importantly, will help you grow as an individual in every aspect. You can apply for Leadership Boca 2017 at bocachamber.com or reach out to Chasity Navarro at cnavarro@bocachamber.com. We look forward to welcoming the future leaders of today! Kind regards,

Q&A

KEEPING US SAFE

Chief Dan Alexander Police Chief, Boca Raton A Changing City

Q: What Have You Seen Change in Boca Raton? A: Despite the economic challenges we have faced over the past decade, Boca Raton has continued to develop into a world-class city in so many ways, to include improvements in government, business, education and culture. This continuing growth is based largely on the strength of our citizens and institutions.

Committed To Boca

Q: Why Boca Raton? What keeps you in this city? A: Frankly, I work with, and for, the finest people in municipal government. We also have the best resources (human and otherwise) available to get the job done, to the highest standards. Boca Raton is a great city by just about any measure. Most communities simply cannot match our educational opportunities, recreational amenities, thriving businesses, transportation resources (airport, interstate, rail, etc.), great cultural offerings, and overall outstanding quality of life. I am unashamedly a huge fan of Boca Raton.

Supporting Our Safety

Q: What is our duty as members of this community?

"Attitude reflects leadership."

This quote sits prominently above Chief Dan Alexander's office door as a reminder that a leader's attitude is contagious.

A: All of us are responsible for maintaining the quality of life we have come to expect in Boca Raton. From a safety standpoint, we need everyone to promote vigilance, to continuously look out for themselves and their neighbors. Our community has always rallied behind the Department, but in the current climate, it is even more important for us to demonstrate enthusiastic support for our public safety professionals.

For The People

Q: What is your favorite memory as Chief of Police? A: Watching people succeed. We are in the “people business, so there is great joy in being a witness to personal triumphs, such as lives saved, awards and recognitions for outstanding performance, new hires, promotions, retirements, babies born, graduations, etc.

Looking Ahead

Q: What is your vision for the future and growth of Boca Raton? A: Our community leaders have done a great job of establishing a shared vision and direction for Boca Raton. Relative to our work at the Department, we will be preparing the next generation of leaders, adapting to face a more urban and complex service environment, and leveraging technology to more effectively police our city.

MEMBER BUZZ

MEMBER PRESS RELEASES

Due to press deadlines these news releases are from March through May

Capitol Lighting's 'Making Lives Brighter' Initiative Raises 20k Because of his dad’s workplace and community generosity, now the question for 10-year-old Damarius Roman and his family is no longer “what to do on Father’s Day,” but how many places they can go and experiences they can have -- and even more importantly, “where they and their family can now go easily every day." This week Damarius, who lives with an aggressive form of muscular dystrophy, got to celebrate his newfound freedom and debut his new retrofitted Dodge Grand Caravan to those who generously funded it. Along with his mom, dad and siblings Yazmarie, 13, and Dominick, 4, Damarius headed to Capitol Lighting on Route 35 in Eatontown, N.J., where his dad has worked for 11 years. They went to show off the new van and give thanks to Capitol Lighting and dad’s fellow employees who, through Capitol’s Making Lives Brighter Initiative, helped raise the money for the wheelchair-accessible van. Dedicated to "making lives brighter" since his great-grandparents opened their first store in New Jersey in 1924, Capitol Lighting CEO Ken Lebersfeld added that it was only natural for Capitol Lighting and its employees to rally for one of their own. Support spanned from coworkers at Capitol’s nine showrooms in New Jersey and Florida, and the company's internet store 1-800Lighting.com to vendors and customers.

ROIG Lawyers Partner Jeffrey Tutan Appointed to Florida Bar Jeffrey Tutan, a partner in the Deerfield Beach office of ROIG Lawyers, has been appointed to the Civil Trial Law Certification Committee of The Florida Bar. Tutan joins four other ROIG Lawyers attorneys appointed or reappointed to Florida Bar standing committees as of July 1. The Florida Bar is the third-largest mandatory state bar in the United States. All Bar members are invited to become involved in activities of the Bar's standing committees. These various volunteer groups do much of the work of The Florida Bar. Special committees are appointed to study and make recommendations in response to issues of significance to the legal profession or system of laws in Florida.

Summer Showcase on View at Boca Museum Art School The Boca Raton Museum Art School (bocamuseum.org/artschool) is initiating a new exhibit program to feature emerging artists who take classes at the Art School. The Art School offers classes for students of all levels, but the advanced classes sometimes operate more like ateliers where artists exchange ideas while pursuing their own art practice. The Summer Showcase 5x5 features outstanding artists of the Art School. Four painters and one photographer – Connie Commette, Stan Dornfest, Jody Grass, Lidia Robayna, and Jill Weintraub – have been invited to exhibit five artworks. The exhibit will be on view from June 2 to July 6, 2016. The meet-the-artists reception is Thursday, June 23, 5:30-7:30pm.

Marmot Boca Raton Bowl Set for Dec. 20 The 2016 Marmot Boca Raton Bowl will take place Tuesday, Dec. 20, as announced by executive director Doug Mosley. The game will be televised on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET from FAU Stadium, located on the campus of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. “The community has rallied around the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl as one of Palm Beach County’s holiday traditions and we are pleased that our 2016 game day and time falls in line with what has been successful the first two years,” said Mosley. “We believe this day and time makes participating in the events around the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl very accessible for families, businesses and visitors as they plan their holiday season activities, including what has become tabbed as ‘Boca’s Biggest Annual Outdoor Party’. We are looking forward to another great event this year.” “We are excited to know the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl will continue for the third year to be hosted on the Tuesday before the Christmas Holiday here in Palm Beach County,” said Glenn Jergensen, Executive Director of the County Tourist Development Council. “Continuing as a night game, the week before season officially kicks off in the Palm Beaches, is welcomed news to the hoteliers, restaurants and tourism partners, coupled with the prime-time television coverage on ESPN, makes this a winner for all parties.”

About YEA! The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a nine-month program that walks students in grades 6-12 through the process of starting their own, REAL businesses. Students brainstorm business ideas, decide if they want to work by themselves or as a team, write a business plan, pitch their plan to investors for funding, and actually launch their own business! All of the learning is real and experiential. Students leave the class as business owners, complete with their very own DBA. YEA! is held 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Saint Andrew's School every Wednesday from September 2016 through May 2017.

YEA! 2016 Graduating Class Members of the Boca Chamber's Board of Directors, mentors, family and friends of the 2016 YEA! students gathered at St. Andrew's School to honor the YEA! Class of 2016. SPOTLIGHT: TIA JENKINS Seventeen-year-old Tia Jenkins was chosen to be a part of the Boca Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur's Academy in September of 2015. She was given the tools necessary to start up a business and was provided wonderful mentorship from Owen Koff. Jenkins studied her 15 years of dance experience and came up with the perfect product: Switchy Shoes. It was the new solution for dancers to change the color and style of their already owned traditional ballet shoes. The product consists of a sock-like feature with leather soles (matching a traditional ballet shoe), and elastic to hold it together. When the current ballet shoe gets worn, slide Switchy Shoes over it and you have a brand new pair of shoes. Jenkins designed a prototype and presented it to the class. With the help of the YEA! program, her business has been growing. She competed against her class at an investor panel and won $2,300 in investments and landed the opportunity to present her business in Rochester, N.Y., at the regional competition. To learn more about Switchy Shoes, contact Tia via email at switchyshoes@gmail.com or check out the website at www.switchyshoes.com.
