Taking Off into a New Year of Commerce

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

The Boca Chamber is launching into the New Year at full force after wrapping up an exciting and groundbreaking 2016. With the goal of continuing to advance the Chamber’s mission – to Promote and Sustain Economic Prosperity in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County – it is important that we not only reflect on the advancements that occurred this past year, but also to shift our focus to propelling toward our future goals for 2017. From engaging the Chamber's leadership in city matters, to launching a brand new program and even reporting recordattendance at notable annual events such as the Community Cookout and Wine & All That Jazz -- we are extremely proud of this past year's accomplishments. You can read more about our Top Five Memories on page five. After a year of extraordinary leadership by Chairman Jerry Fedele, we welcomed Ethel Isaacs Williams as our new Chair of the Boca Chamber Board of Directors on November 1. With Ethel at the helm, our future is in good hands. In the coming months, your Chamber will be working hard to ensure that the best candidates are elected in the March municipal election. We believe in policy over politics. Good policy makes for good commerce, and it is our goal to endorse and elect candidates who will help you prosper. By definition, commerce is the activity of buying and selling goods and services. We are working hard for you, behind the scenes, to create an environment in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County that will allow these activities to flourish. In November, the Chamber's Political Action Committee, Business Leaders United (BLU-PAC) endorsed 11 candidates in the primary and general elections, and nine were elected!

President & CEO Troy McLellan addresses the crowd at the 2016 Annual Celebration.

"We are working hard for you to create an environment that will allow commerce to flourish."

Looking ahead, you won't want to miss a few of our upcoming events. On February 24, we will recognize Susan Saturday of Bluegreen Vacations and BBX Capital Companies as the 2017 award recipient at the 11th Annual DIAMOND Award Luncheon. We will also recognize one of our former YEA! students and national award-winner, Rebecca Zerbo and her company, Positive Pockets. On Saturday, March 11, mark your calendars for our annual Community Cookout at the YMCA of South Palm Beach County. Bring your kids and spend the day playing games, enjoying grilled food prepared by the Chamber and YMCA's Boards of Directors, and having fun as we welcome your family into our Chamber family. From Connecting Members, to Advancing Commerce, to Protecting Business and Enhancing Community, the Boca Chamber is working for you! We understand the impact our work has on the community, and we want to keep moving, keep enhancing, and keep advancing Boca Raton's commerce to make this the best place to live, work, learn and play.

Moving Forward,

Troy M. McLellan, CCE, FCCP President & CEO Connection Magazine | 3

MEMPHIS TO TAKE ON WESTERN KENTUCKY IN THE 2016 BOCA RATON BOWL

GUMBO LIMBO'S BOARDWALK REOPENS WITH RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY

The 2016 Boca Raton Bowl turned out to be exactly what many college football experts had predicted -- one of the highest-scoring and most entertaining games of the entire bowl season. The Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers, from Conference-USA, defeated the University of Memphis Tigers, representing the American Athletic Conference, 51-31 in a game that featured crazy trick plays and two quarterbacks who combined to throw seven touchdown passes.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center celebrated the re-opening of the popular coastal hammock boardwalk with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, December 14, 2016. Boca Raton Mayor, Susan Haynie, along with the City Council of Boca Raton; Robert K. Rollins Jr., Chairman of the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District; and the Parks and Recreation Board were present to cut the ribbon and officially open the boardwalk to the public once again.

The game was played Tuesday, Dec. 20, on a beautiful evening that showcased FAU Stadium at its best to a national ESPN TV audience. It also was the second time the Hilltoppers came to FAU Stadium the 2016 season. Last October, they defeated the host FAU Owls in a regular-season game.

“We are excited to open this first phase of the boardwalk for the enjoyment of all of our guests,” commented Gumbo Limbo Manager, Leanne Welch. “The new boardwalk has a gentle slope and is compliant with current ADA regulations, and the pickets have been replaced with a mesh screen, which allows for better visibility. Durable, non-slip recycled plastic was utilized for the deck and railings.”

HYATT PLACE BOCA RATON OPENS ITS DOOR FOR BUSINESS IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN BOCA RATON Hyatt Place Boca Raton opened its doors for business on Tuesday, December 13, 2016. The new, 15-story, 200-room hotel will offer business and leisure travelers an open, intuitive design, casual atmosphere, and practical amenities, such as free Wi-Fi, 24-hour food offerings and a 24-hour fitness center. “Boca Raton is a historic city with key business and leisure destination. Hyatt Place Boca Raton will add a wonderful new option for business and leisure travelers visiting the heart of the city’s business and financial district,” said General Manager Dave Cuadra. “We are so excited to open the doors of the Hyatt Place Boca Raton and show off what is going to be the coolest hotel in the city. We acquired the most coveted location in Boca and have built a stunning hotel located in the center of this booming downtown. Boca Raton is becoming a destination for global travelers and we are so thrilled to be a part,” said Scott Webb, President of Kolter Hospitality.

I am very proud of our team and our achievements.” 10| Connection Magazine

According to Susan Elliott, environmental program coordinator, the education staff looks forward to using the expanded teaching stops along the boardwalk. “Areas were widened to allow for our school groups and tour groups to gather around their guide, improving their experience.” The second and third phases will include a full renovation of the western portion of the loop, and a refurbishing of the older section that connects to Red Reef West.

Thank You YEA! Sponsors

Bobra S. Bush is the President and owner of two successful small businesses based in Boca Raton, Florida. Telcom Corporation, founded in 1989, recently celebrated its 24th year in business, and audits telecommunications bills, finding huge errors and inefficiencies for public and large private organizations. Telcom works on a contingency basis, only sharing in the refunds and savings found on the bills for local telephone service, long distance, cellular, and internet, and takes no fees if they find nothing for their client. Clients include Broward County, multi-state Assisted Living Facilities, and large medical practices.

Most Memorable Moment as a YEA! Instructor: " I've had so many memorable experiences, and these kids are so smart, that I truly can't choose one. The most rewarding moments were when I would ask them a question about a topic that I had covered on a previous day, and they were able to successfully translate that knowledge to what we were covering that day. They really get these business concepts, and they were immediately able to apply them to their business ideas. I call them the Aha-Moments." What Bobra Has Learned from the Experience: " I learned new ways of looking at problems and solutions that are directly tied to the students' having grown up in the age of the internet and smart phones. Although I eagerly embrace technology for my own business, having a fresh perspective of the power of that technology, has refreshed my own approach." Advice to You: " I encourage all Chamber members to get involved in this program, in any capacity they can. The energy, passion, and ideas coming from the students are aweinspiring."

GOLDEN BELL

GOLDEN BELL The Boca Chamber's Education Foundation

The Boca Chamber's Golden Bell Education Foundation (Golden Bell) is in its 26th year of operation. Golden Bell is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was created for the sole purpose of supporting the Boca Raton Public School System, grades K-12. Founded by the Chamber's Board of Directors, the Foundation funds educational programs that promote business skills. Each year, we invite all Boca Raton Public Schools to submit applications for a Golden Bell Grant. Funds are awarded to deserving and innovative programs. We are pleased to announce that nearly $60,000 was granted to Boca Raton public schools and scholarship programs in 2016! We ask that you consider donating to Golden Bell. The success of our organization is achieved through our community support. To donate, please contact Christie Workman at (561) 3954433 or cworkman@bocachamber.com. Because of YOU, we are helping to make young minds brighter, smarter and more creative. Right here. Right now!
