nhancing the Community

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Striving to Enhance the Community We are fortunate to have many non-profit organizations in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and all South palm Beach County delivering critical services within our region. The important work of these non-profits and the professionals within them contribute to the unique fabric of all our communities. To recognize our non-profit members, we showcased them on the cover of this edition of the Connection Magazine. Non-profit organizations thrive in prosperous communities. The Boca Chamber has been delivering on its mission to promote and sustain economic prosperity in our region for the past seven decades. That effort has resulted in a large and growing nonprofit community in South Palm Beach County that improves and changes lives. Assisting in that effort is the robust corporate culture that Boca Raton enjoys. Half of Palm Beach County’s corporate headquarters are located in Boca Raton and these major employers play a key role in helping to deliver the critical missions of the non-profits.

President & CEO Troy M. McLellan " We are fortunate to have many non-profit organizations in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and all South Palm Beach County."

Specifically, through the Chamber’s annual Boca Chamber Festival Days (BCFD), we connect our corporations with our nonprofit members with the intention of creating a fund -raising event to support the worthy causes. for. The Chamber helps to facilitate these events and promotes them through our many communication channels. This year, BCFD events included music, comedy, dinner, tastings, game nights – and much more. To see pictures from these successful events, turn to page 13. At the beginning of the pandemic, the Chamber launched our Did You Know Campaign to promote our non-profit members and bring awareness to their critical missions. It has since transformed into our Let's Make a Difference Together campaign and has expanded to include specific opportunities to volunteer and promote their respective events. The program showcases two non-profit members each week and distributed to thousands of recipients throughout the region. In a year still impacted by the challenges of the pandemic, the Chamber's Golden Bell Education Foundation continues to raise significant funds for our local public schools in Boca Raton. In the form of grants, over $100,000 was awarded at our September Monthly Membership Breakfast. To learn more about the schools that received funds and additional information about the Foundation, turn to page 14. Over this past year and a half, we have seen an increase in corporate relocation to Palm Beach County. Attracting these companies to our region is a combination of our pro-business environment, favorable tax system, world class healthcare, A-rated schools, well-maintained beaches and parks and overall unmatched quality of life. As one of the Chamber’s four core pillars – Enhancing our Community is at the forefront of activities championed by the Chamber. Together, we continue to Move Business Forward in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and South Palm Beach County, making our region the best place to Live, Work, Learn and Play. Moving Business Forward,

Troy M. McLellan, CCE, FCCP President & CEO Connection Magazine | 3

ENHANCING Community INTERVIEW WITH GARY PETERS How did you go from a one-time doner to Boca Helping Hands to President of the Board? For me, it was not a one-time decision, but the recognition of a greater need. It was the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma-my one time donation-that led me to see the greater need right here in Boca Raton. What is the smallest change you have made that has had the biggest positive result? It was a small shift in philosophy that brought the biggest positive results. It was when it was decided that we would add another initiative, (beyond feeding the hungry, which remains our core mission) to also offer job training programs Can you share one or two stories of individuals whose lives have been changed because of Boca Helping Hands? I know that the lives of many of our clients have been bettered because of the help they have found here at Boca Helping Hands. However, the starkest change is evident in my own story. After retirement, Boca Helping Hands gave me a new understanding and appreciation of life, and a most meaningful 2nd career was born out of that realization. How do you pass on the impactful lessons you learned?

Gary Peters President, Board of Directors Boca Helping Hands

The lesson learned is that average people banding together for the common good works miracles. Sharing my story and that lesson with other recently retired individuals, where so much talent resides, hoping to inspire them to invest in the betterment of those in need is the way I choose to pass on what I’ve learned. As a two-time U.S Monopoly champion, if you had a chance to play against anyone, who would you want to play against? I would love to have a game with four other monopoly champions.

•• SPOTLIGHT••

GET TO KNOW JON & BONNIE What is your favorite memory within your career?

JON & BONNIE KAYE Kaye Communications

What was the motivation behind creating Kaye Communications? As a working mom of 2 very young sons who had nearly a 3-hour daily commute as a VP at a Miami PR agency 25 years ago, Bonnie knew she had to create a better work/life balance long before the concept was “trending.” In doing so she focused on creating a seriously strategic next-generation hybrid “Marketing PR” option for the market … one that embraced, made and promoted public/private partnerships as its cornerstone. Within 6 months husband Jon, a hospitality industry leader who was driving Club Marketing for the Boca Raton Resort & Club, joined KCOM-PR as COO & Chief Marketing Strategist. Simultaneously, the Resort and its Premier Club became one of KCOM-PR’s first high-profile springboards of many to come that enabled us to activate and demonstrate our integrated regional and national brand ideation, PR, branding, marketing, media relations and community relations strategies and capabilities.

We have a long list of good memories, most of which involve WIN, WIN successes for businesses, nonprofits, community, the City of Boca Raton and several of its iconic assets…which has gotten us where we are today. Among them… • Being retained by the City of Boca Raton (from 2008-2012) to rebrand, reposition and restore vibrancy to the then-struggling Downtown Boca destination with our development of short and long-term destination marketing, community engagement, media relations and event plans that set a strong, inviting foundation for attracting new businesses, hotels, residential properties, cultural offerings, employees, residents, visitors, etc. All the wonderful memories come back to us as we drive through today and see the Downtown Boca logo we designed continuing to welcome residents and visitors to this exceptional asset. • Partnering two clients: Town Center at Boca Raton and the BRR&C to “Save Halloween” in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Wilma that left it unsafe for families to Trick or Treat from house to house. Knowing residents and the media needed some good news to share, KCOM-PR proactive concept for two clients delivered 10,000 people out to Town Center for a memorable, safe evening.

You are known as “Community Connecteurs”, tell us how that came about? How has it gotten you to where you are today?

• Driving the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Boca Raton Resort & Club that drew 2,000 guests donned in pink.

From inception in 1996, Bonnie’s commitment to private/public partnerships (now called community engagement) became one of KCOM-PR’s founding pillars, more than a decade before the platform of Social Responsibility started resonating as a widely accepted “best practice” in business. When most businesses in the 90s were solely focused on billable hours and driving revenue, KCOM-PR began introducing and guiding business owners and professionals on how to best forge meaningful public/private partnerships…demonstrating that when “business builds community, community helps build business.”

• Rebranding and repositioning Royal Palm Place as it transitioned from the “Pink Plaza” into the mixed-use village it is today. Remember watching the 6,000 lb. bronze statue of Addison Mizner (we recommended be commissioned) be hoisted to the top of the clock tower where he sits watching over his Boca Raton.

By introducing this then progressive strategy that Bonnie honed during her corporate communications tenure at Home Box Office headquarters in NYC, and then creating impactful WIN, WIN public-private partnership matches, KCOM-PR has professionally and personally empowered for-profit and nonprofit clients to do more than just grow and engage customer and donor bases, but also lead in educating communities and niche populations on critical topics, opening impactful thought leadership dialogs and engaging others in social responsibility. Through our 25+ years in business and community, we have “led by example” as business, community and thought leaders to guide stakeholders on how to best forge meaningful public/private partnerships that best align with their brand’s character, objectives and customers/employee/donor interests. Areas of impact have included mission-critical initiatives on community health and wellness, economic equality/affordable housing, cultural arts education and engagement, mentoring, business advocacy, Holocaust education, children’s needs and animal rescue.

What is something that people might be surprised to know about you?

• Co-Chairing White Coats-4-Care scholarship fundraiser for the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine for 11 consecutive years, raising more than $1 million to “dress and equip” every incoming class of future physicians since the college’s inception.

Not sure they would be surprised about this, but many think it is amazing that we have been married for 35 years and working together for 25 years. Many question “How can you do that?” It is simple…we are each other’s best cheerleaders, are “in it to win it” and care deeply about the same things: helping make the world a better place now and for future generations.

GOLDEN BELL EDUCATION FOUNDATION The Boca Chamber’s Golden Bell Education Foundation (Golden Bell) is celebrating its 30th year of operation! As a 501c3 nonprofit organization, it exists for the sole purpose of supporting the Boca Raton public school system and administering educational programs that promote business skills and workforce readiness. Established in 1991, Golden Bell has granted over $1.7 Million since its inception, and has impacted 800,000 students in grades K-12. Each year, all Boca Raton public schools are invited to submit applications for a Golden Bell grant. This would not be possible without those who generously donate. Partners, sponsors, and individual donors have helped us continue making our schools in Boca Raton A-rated, and our Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!)students the future leaders of tomorrow. Our biggest fundraiser is our annual Battle of the Bands competition where local business professionals, who have little to no musical background, turn themselves into rock stars as they help raise money for the public schools of Boca Raton. Despite a challenging year with the pandemic, the Golden Bell Education Foundation was successfully able to continue giving to help students in literacy, STEM education, and career exploration. We are pleased to announce that this year we awarded 46 grants totaling over $100,000 to Boca Raton public schools and scholarship programs! “2021 GOLDEN BELL GRANTEES” AD Henderson University School Addison Mizner Elementary Boca Raton Elementary Calusa Elementary Coral Sunset Elementary Del Prado Elementary Hammock Pointe Elementary J C Mitchell Elementary Sandpiper Shores Elementary Sunrise Park Elementary Verde K-8 Waters Edge Elementary Whispering Pines Elementary Boca Raton Community Middle Don Estridge High Tech Middle Eagles Landing Middle Loggers' Run Middle FAU High/AD Henderson University School Boca Raton Community High Olympic Heights High Spanish River High West Boca Raton High
