"Whether you're attending networking events, collaborating on community initiatives, or supporting local businesses, the power of connection is what fuels your growth and collective success."

For this Connecting Members issue, we're thrilled to feature FPL's External Affairs Manager of Palm Beach County, Amy Kemp, whose inspiring journey exemplifies the importance of connecting community and business leaders. Amy's background, shaped by living in Honduras and France, ignited her passion for fostering the connection between businesses, cultures, and communities. Her commitment to bridging the gap between community leaders and business leaders has driven impactful initiatives, like the Chamber’s expansion in Boynton Beach and the development of the Business in Boynton Luncheon.

Amy's journey with the Chamber, including her role as a member of the Board of Directors and an alumnus of Leadership Boca Class of 2024, highlights how these connections lead to growth, collaboration, and success. Whether it’s through supporting rapid storm response or organizing community events like the Community Cookout, Amy demonstrates how authentic connections strengthen our business ecosystem and community resilience. THE GOLDEN BELL EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Trisha Vaca, The Top Female Battle of the Bands Fundraiser, On Why She Chose to Support Golden Bell's Mission

After spending 11 years away from Boca Raton to pursue my legal education and career, returning home during the pandemic was a moment of reflection and reconnection. While my peers and siblings were deeply embedded in their professional networks, I felt a step behind in fostering relationships within the community.

Joining The Chamber and participating in the Battle of the Bands was my way of regrowing my roots in the community and reestablishing connections with its thriving business network. It was a decision that combined my personal and professional aspirations with an opportunity to contribute to a greater cause.

Building Lasting Friendships Through Music and Philanthropy

When we signed up for the annual Golden Bell Education Foundation’s Battle of the Bands, we thought it would be a fun way to support a cause close to all our hearts— education. None of us expected that this event would bring us together in a way that would lead to lasting friendships.

We were a group of strangers at first, each of us a little nervous about jumping into something new but the excitement of supporting a great cause—and the hope of taking home a trophy(!)—kept us going. What started as practice sessions soon became a place not just to improve our musical skills, but to laugh, share stories, and connect in a way we hadn’t imagined.

The Golden Bell Education Foundation’s mission deeply resonated with me—this incredible organization supports educational programs that promote business skills for students in our local public schools. By investing in these programs, we are nurturing a generation of future leaders who will shape our local businesses and positively impact our community. Growing up here, I wish there had been a stronger emphasis on this kind of initiative, and I am thrilled to have contributed to fostering a better learning environment for the youth in our area.

Participating in the Battle of the Bands was also an opportunity to challenge myself in a way I had never done before. As a former ballet dancer with the Boca Ballet Theatre and a member of the FAU Dance Team, performing was nothing new—but learning to play an instrument (in my case, a bass guitar) and doing it on stage in front of hundreds of people—was a completely different ballgame. Overcoming the challenge of mastering an instrument, collaborating with my incredible and supportive band mates Alezandra Berrio, Dave Cohen, and Lesly Ordonez, and putting together a cohesive and creative performance was fun, exciting and invigorating. From brainstorming themes to designing costumes and props, and finally performing live in harmony as a band, every step of the process was unforgettable.

This experience was not only an incredible personal accomplishment but also a meaningful way to give back to a community that shaped who I am today. I am honored to have played a role in supporting Golden Bell’s mission and helping to empower our future leaders. Knowing that my contribution will make a lasting impact on students’ lives fills me with pride and gratitude. Meeting lifelong friendsincluding all Battle of the Bands participants and alumni and Golden Bell staff and administrators - has been one of the greatest gifts this journey has provided me. But the true icing on the cake was my two children, Ema (7) and Adrian (4), proudly thinking their mom is an actual “rock star.” Who am I to correct them?

Over time, the group of strangers became a true community of friends. Meeting past participants and seeing how committed they were, only inspired us more, and fueled our drive to “WINNING” (as band member Josh would always say). In the end, it wasn’t just about the competition; it was about the friendships we made along the way and the amazing cause we were supporting.

We’re already looking ahead to next year’s Battle of the Bands, where we’ll return with our winning song—and debut a brand-new one!

THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY (YEA!): CONNECTING STUDENTS WITH LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program is an exciting program that transforms local middle and high school students into entrepreneurs. Throughout the program, students in grades 6-12 work in close partnership with local leaders of industries, community members, and educators to generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, and launch their very own businesses!

YEA! is an exciting, comprehensive entrepreneurship program that transforms middle and high school students into start-up business owners. YEA!’s core mission is to empower students to harness their passion, energy, creativity, and talents to launch ventures and see entrepreneurship as a path to success.

This year’s class consists of twenty three students who are challenging themselves to learn how to become the CEOs and business leaders of tomorrow. Student participants represent Boca Raton High, Spanish River High, Donna Klein Jewish Academy, West Boynton Middle School, Sora School, University School, American Heritage, Pinecrest, and Saint Andrew’s School.

The YEA! program is grateful to each of the volunteer instructors who help lead one of the three segments of the year-long program: Bobra Bush of Telcom Corp., First Segment instructor; Laureen Pannullo of Confident Bookkeeping Services, Second Segment Instructor; and Tim Sharp former President and Foundation Treasurer of Rotary Club of Boca Raton Sunrise, Third Segment Instructor. In each segment, we will have invaluable expertise that will be shared by local business leaders and guest speakers.

With eighteen business ideas, the Class of 2025 will be participating in their first public event with the CEO Roundtable and Elevator Pitch Competition. This event will showcase students pitching their ideas in under one minute after an engaging panel discussion with CEOs from the Boca community.

The students’ final event will be the Investor Panel “Shark Tank Style” presentations where students will present their ideas to win seed money for their potential start-ups. The final public event will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at 5:00 pm at BRIC.

Students who successfully complete the program have the opportunity to become part of the Chamber Youth Committee and participate in age-appropriate Chamber events. A highlight of last year was the Boca Chamber Fall Business Expo, where students displayed their business ideas and conducted sales.

Leadership Boca Class of 2024 Class Project: Empowering Student Success and Building a Legacy

Leadership Boca Class President, 2024

The Leadership Boca Class of 2024 (LB24) is a vibrant group of professionals from diverse industries, united by a shared passion for the Boca Raton community and its future.

After surveying the class to identify a focus for their service project, LB24 chose to address student success and scholarships. They adopted a multi-faceted approach, including monthly events to support classmates’ non-profits, causes, and initiatives, and a major project: creating an endowed George Snow Scholarship on behalf of Leadership Boca, representing all current and past LB alumni. In addition, they plan to volunteer their time to support George Snow Scholarship Fund programs.

During the first half of 2025, the class will work together to raise $25,000, with fundraising efforts organized by class colors (IYKYK). Their goal is to establish an endowed scholarship, ensuring ongoing support for students year after year.

Beyond fundraising, The class will also serve the George Snow Scholarship Fund by participating in the Fund's many Support Services designed to empower and uplift Snow Scholars. They will also gather monthly to support each other’s causes, fostering collaboration and camaraderie.

Through their efforts, LB24 aims to leave a lasting impact on the community while showcasing the enduring bonds and influence of Leadership Boca.

POWERING UP: WHY STRONG CONNECTIONS ARE THE LIFELINE OF YOUR BUSINESS

We caught up with Board Member and FPL's External Affairs Manager of Palm Beach County, Amy Kemp, to talk about what inspires her, community, and how she creates lasting, mutual connections.

Q. Can you tell us how your background has influenced how you approach connecting community leaders with business leaders?

I lived in Honduras and France in my youth and found a passion for the interconnectedness of business, cultures, and communities, particularly when adjusting to a new environment. Throughout my personal life I have seen the value of connectedness – whether through family gatherings, neighbors helping each other, or simply making an introduction to someone in need. Since then and through many other personal and professional opportunities, I’ve understood the importance of bridging the gap between community leaders and business leaders. At FPL, our goal is to create a strong sense of community and foster collaboration among all stakeholders and customers, and that’s one of the reasons why I’m so committed to our mission as a company because it is so personal to me. By leveraging my experience, I have been able to effectively engage community leaders, understand their unique needs, and connect them with business leaders who can provide the resources and support necessary for mutual growth and success.

Q. Can you share your journey and involvement with the Chamber of Commerce? What are some of your most significant achievements with the Chamber?

My involvement with the Chamber has been both inspiring and fulfilling. From the moment I joined, I immediately recognized the power of this organization in bringing together businesses of all sizes and industries. Over the years, I have actively participated in various Chamber programs, including the Chamber’s Leadership Boca program (Class of 2024 graduate), attending networking events, and actively collaborating with fellow members. Most recently, I joined the Board of Directors. One of my most significant achievements with the Chamber has been supporting the Chamber’s strategy to grow its presence in Boynton Beach, and the development of the Business in Boynton Luncheon. This has allowed business leaders to come together, to discuss common challenges, identify any opportunities for collaboration, and collectively work towards solutions that benefit the broader business community. Within the Boca area, the Community Cookout event stands out as the business community and families came together to celebrate our connectedness; and we ate some delicious chili!

Q. What inspires you most about creating connections among members, and how do you see this strengthening the overall business community?

What inspires me the most is witnessing the transformational impact it can have on the entire business community. When members are connected, they can share knowledge, resources, and best practices. This collaboration leads to innovation, growth, and increased opportunities for everyone involved. By strengthening these connections, we build a stronger and more resilient business community that can collectively tackle challenges, drive economic growth, and create a thriving environment for all. FPL's commitment to rapid and efficient storm response exemplifies the importance of these connections. By working closely with local businesses, emergency services, and community leaders, we ensure a swift recovery and support the resilience of the entire region. This dedication helps maintain continuous operations and minimizes disruptions, allowing businesses to recover faster and continue to thrive. By strengthening these connections, we build a more robust and united business community that can collectively tackle challenges, drive economic growth, and create a thriving environment for all. I’m proud to serve as a local liaison at the Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center to support this commitment.

Q. How do you envision your role evolving to continue fostering collaboration and connection in South Palm Beach County?

Moving forward, I envision my role expanding to further foster collaboration and connection in South Palm Beach County. One of the key areas of focus will be leveraging technology to enhance communication channels and facilitate continued collaborations. While we already work with local schools and universities to connect established business leaders with emerging talents, we will continue fostering a sense of continuity and knowledge transfer. Additionally, I will continue to actively engage with community and business leaders, listening to their evolving needs and exploring innovative ways to bring them together. We are excited to share our centennial celebration with the City of Boca Raton in 2025, and I look forward to celebrating our history together!

Q. What advice would you give Chamber members about building relationships with business and civic leaders?

This is crucial for personal and professional growth. My advice would be to prioritize authenticity and genuine connections. Take the time to understand what is important to you and understand others’ needs and challenges, actively listen, and offer

support where possible. Be proactive in attending Chamber events, networking functions, and make an effort to have meaningful conversations. And, just like individuals may help you make connections when needed, help others by doing the same. Remember, relationships take time and effort to cultivate. So, invest in building long-lasting relationships that are built on trust, mutual respect, and a shared vision for a thriving business community.

Q. Beyond your professional roles, how have you been involved in the local community? What are you most proud of in terms of your community involvement and impact?

I have been passionate about giving back to the local community since a very young age. I’ve been fortunate to have received support from nonprofits, mentors and business leaders throughout my personal and professional journey, and as such, consider it a responsibility to give back to our communities that give so much. Over the years, I have volunteered with various non-profit organizations, including Junior Achievement, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Soldier’s Angels, and so many others. Two initiatives I am particularly proud of is organizing a wheelchair washing event at the VA Hospital in West Palm Beach to help give back to our veterans, and surprising local veterans by decorating their homes for the holidays. Witnessing the collective efforts of our volunteers to improve the resources for those that sacrificed so much for our country left a lasting impact on me. It reinforced my belief in the power of community engagement and how together we can create a positive change that benefits us all.

Ribbon Cuttings

Over the last several months, we've had an amazing time celebrating grand openings and anniversaries! The Chamber has seen a significant increase in Ribbon Cuttings from a cross-section of new industries; this increase is proof positive that South Florida and our local economy are thriving and moving business forward.

We want to extend a big "thank you" to everyone who joined us to welcome these businesses to our community. These events were filled with excitement, community spirit, and connection making. We’re thrilled to see new businesses plant their roots in Boca, Boynton, and beyond, and we can't wait to see them thrive.

Ribbon Cutting ceremonies can be found on the calendar at www.bocaratonchamber.com/events — we hope you can join us in the new year as we welcome even more business and make more connections.

The Delray Beach Open, consisting of an ATP Tour and Legends event, returns to the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center February 7-16, 2025. Celebrating its 33rd year, the 2025 tournament promises to build upon the spectacular success of its previous years and raise what is already considered a very high bar.

The tournament also features the ever-popular Delray Beach Open Food & Wine Series (DBOFWS) consisting of multiple tasting events, luncheons and cocktail receptions which collectively include over 40 of the top restaurants, food purveyors, and spirit partners in South Florida showcasing their tasting bites and cocktails to the masses. New events as part of the DBOFWS are the ‘Grand Tasting’ and ‘Valentine’s & Volleys: A Taste of Italy,’ which will join the ever-popular Burgers, Bourbon & Brew, Tacos, Tequila & Tennis and crowd favorite Game, Set, Pour.

This past February, American and current #4 world ranked, Taylor Fritz, defeated Tommy Paul in the finals to become just the second player to win back-to-back DBO titles in the 32 years of the tournament and will return in 2025 to attempt a three-peat. If Fritz defends his Delray Beach Open title, he will be the first player in history to win the tournament three times!

Festival of the Arts Boca Celebrates Boca Raton’s Centennial with 2025 “Back in Time” Lineup

The 2025 Festival of the Arts Boca, running from February 28 to March 9 at Mizner Park Amphitheater, invites audiences to journey “Back in Time” to celebrate Boca Raton’s centennial. Featuring a diverse lineup of music, dance, and literature, highlights include a performance by Dallas Brass with local students, a Pavarotti Voices Opera Gala, and a live symphonic screening of Back to the Future to mark the film’s 40th anniversary. Events also feature a world premiere ballet, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, Carl Hiaasen, and a grand Boca Raton Centennial Celebration with fun music and stories.

“This year’s theme celebrates the enduring legacy of the arts while honoring Boca Raton’s 100-year history,” said Executive Director Joanna Marie Kaye. “From classic cinema to contemporary ballet, there is truly something for everyone.”

Tickets for the 19th Annual Festival of the Arts Boca start at $30 at festivalboca.org or by calling (561) 757-4762.
