Connecting Members Beyond The Handshake

As we enter 2023, the activity and advocacy at the Chamber continues at full throttle! We will commemorate the 5th year anniversary of the merger between the Boca Raton and Boynton Beach Chambers of Commerce. This strategic partnership established a larger geographic footprint for our members for business growth and expanded opportunities to connect. Boynton Beach continues to be a city on the move with a fresh new downtown, Mayor, Commission, and more recently, City Manager. Although not new to the City of Boynton Beach as a former Police Captain, Daniel Dugger is new to his role as City Manager. He shares his vision with us for the future of Boynton Beach on page 6.

The merger has also allowed us to continue to deliver on our mission to promote and sustain Economic Prosperity in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, and all of South Palm Beach County, positioning us as the go-to Business Organization for resources, information and business success.

Our connection efforts have also been amplified through the targeted use of social media, our Boca Chamber App and partnership with the Boca Tribune. With a 50% increase in engagement through all our social media platforms this past year alone – we continue to provide ‘no cost connection options’ to our members for sharing members news and announcements. Our social media activity has allowed our members to expand their sphere of influence connecting with a global audience. In addition, we utilize our large database to connect our members to the NonProfit and Restaurant industries – who had been severely impacted by the events over the past two years. A weekly email is distributed each week to highlight them or order to bring maximum exposure and ultimate connection to their businesses. Finally, my weekly CEO Message is another effective way we connect membership and the greater business community to beneficial opportunities and important information that affects Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, and South Palm Beach County. Each week, the reader of the message can consume bite size pieces of information on a wide range of topics.

"Our social media activity has allowed our members to expand their sphere of influence connecting with a global audience."

While we have already turned the annual calendar into the new year, each November the Chamber transitions into a new fiscal year and welcomes new leadership to the Chamber’s Board of Directors. We are fortunate to have Jackie Reeves serve another year as Chair of the Board, in addition to the remaining members of the Executive Committee who will hold their positions for an additional year. We welcome these new transformative business leaders to our Board of Directors: Megan Escamilla with Neiman Marcus Group, Daniel M. Gropper, Ph.D., FAU College of Business, Jeff Perlman of CDS Holdings, Inc. and Philip Piedt with Benchmark Financial. Turn to page 4 to meet our newest Board members.

You can rest assured that your Boca Chamber kicks off the 2023 year with high intensity and a dedicated team of professionals focused on connecting you, our members, with opportunities to explore new connections to grow your businesses!

Moving business forward,

BEYOND THE HANDSHAKE

You are at a networking event; you find someone you would like to connect with and introduce yourself to and shake their hand. Now what? If you are like most people, you follow up with “what do you do?” That’s not a bad question, but wouldn’t you rather stand out and be remembered at the end of the event? Remember - “people do business with those they know, like, and trust!”

Let’s start by breaking that saying down starting with the ‘know.’ While the ‘know’ should be a two-way street, in this scenario we will make it about you getting to know them. Ask the right questions; questions about them, their business and anything else that you might discover you have in common.

Don’t rush the conversation but rather let the conversation ebb and flow naturally listening to what pops up during your conversation. If you use this simple step, it will impress the person you are talking with, and will make them quickly realize that you really do want to get to know them and their business on a more in-depth level, rather than as their next sales prospect. By asking the right questions, with the right attitude, in the right setting, you will be the one to stand out right after that handshake.

Next is ‘like.’ Is your body language showing you are interested in what they are saying? Do you have a positive attitude? Are you smiling? All of these are what attract people to other people. Be real, warm, and again see what you have in common, as shared interests. All these things go a long way in helping to build that all important likeability factor.

Finally, ‘trust.’ In your conversation you must demonstrate to them you are interested in them and their business and want as much information as they are willing to share with you. At this point you are laying the foundation of establishing a trusted partnership.

Congratulations! You have shaken the hand of someone you have not met before. You have shown genuine interest and asked lots of pertinent questions. This will get you on your way to connecting with the right businesspeople.

Daniel Dugger, City Manager, Boynton Beach

Boynton Beat

What is your vision for Boynton Beach?

My vision for Boynton Beach is for it to be a welcoming and prosperous coastal community that exemplifies inclusion, equity, and resilience with a focus on public safety and economic development.

How can the Chamber help facilitate your vision?

The Chamber can help facilitate my vision by continuing to support and advocate on behalf of our business community. The Chamber will be vital in connecting businesses to the larger Palm Beach County economy and by engaging with business owners to create a positive economic impact for the Boynton Beach community.

What community events could help you facilitate your vision?

The Chamber can help promote City events throughout the year and develop new and creative ways to spotlight Boynton Beach businesses. The Chamber could also partner on new community events (i.e. afternoon green market in the Brewery District) that will drive business and commerce to the City of Boynton Beach.

On April 8, 2022, the Chamber celebrated a tradition held by the Boynton Chamber in which a Boynton Beach Police Officer, Firefighter and EMT were recognized and honored. Held at the beautiful Benevenuto's Restaurant, these first responders were selected by their departments for outstanding service to their community. A special Thank You to Baptist Health, ADT, Habitat for Humanity, South Florida, PBS and GED Layers, LLP for their support of this program. This year's event will take place on April 14th once again at Buenvenuto's Restaurant. Mark your calendar for this time honored tradition of recognizing our outstanding first responders in the community!

PULSE

The PULSE Group has been the epicenter for where I formulated pivotal, professional contacts for my career over 10 years ago, evolving now into long-lasting relationships that affirm my commitment to the Chamber, civic and philanthropic community of Palm Beach County. PULSE stands for Professionals United for Leadership, Service & Empowerment, and I'm honored to serve alongside a committee that embodies those worthy principles.

PULSE Chairman, Phil Piedt, Benchmark Financial

Boca Chamber PULSE has helped me connect with like-minded business professionals here in Boca and the surrounding areas and has made opportunities for partnership even easier along the way.

Laura Gilli, George Snow Scholarship Fund

Being a part of PULSE has helped me to make meaningful connections with my peers and to have a group to lean on for advice and support as we continue to grow in our careers.

Karly Parsons, YMCA, South Palm Beach County

What I love about being on the PULSE committee is that it helps in my professional life by growing my network, continuing to learn about the Boca Raton business community and organizations. It also continues to enrich my personal life by the friendships that continue to grow.

Boca Chamber PULSE has provided me with opportunities that would be hard to find anywhere else. The relationships I have made and networks I have explored have helped me grow so much in my professional career

It has truly been an invaluable experience!

Ann Marie Connolly, City of Boca Raton

As a new professional to the Boca community, PULSE has had an extraordinary impact on developing my network and getting to know other colleagues with a shared interest in service and economic growth.

Austin Wratchford,

West Boca Medical Center

(Professionals United for

PULSE gives me the opportunity to connect with like-minded community professionals to grow and give back, both personally and professionally.

A winning combination! Giana

I joined the Boca Chamber’s PULSE committee in 2018, and it’s been a wonderful opportunity to represent my organization and build connections in our community. As someone who grew up in Boca Raton, it’s exciting to see young professionals come together to support each other and contribute to making this a vibrant city to work and live.

I love connecting with like-minded individuals and professionals committed to positively impacting the communities they live, work, and play. I also enjoy working to create opportunities in which young professionals can connect & network with one another to help advance not only within their respective profession but also in this thing called life!

Working for yourself can be lonely at times. You have your customers and your referral partners, but you don’t have “coworkers”. To me, PULSE is that group of young professionals I’ve gotten to know on a deeper level. We’re all in the building/hustling phase of our careers, so I constantly feel inspired when I hear stories of all they’ve been able to accomplish already! They’ve become my “coworkers”.

It is a great pleasure cultivating meaningful relationships and connections through PULSE, and seeing them become fruitful.

The PULSE committee has provided multiple opportunities for me to network with other professionals around the same age as myself and develop stronger relationships that will likely last for many, many years. Because of PULSE and the Chamber of Commerce, I felt confident in being able to open my own practice here in the Boca Raton area in August 2022. I could not be more thankful for the help and support they have provided.

GOLDEN BELL EDUCATION FOUNDATION

The Golden Bell Education Foundation is proud to partner with the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County to help close the literacy achievement gap for our underperforming students in Boca Raton. We have created a $40,000 program to purchase the S.P.I.R.E. (Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence) reading intervention program for kindergarten through third grade in all 13 public elementary schools in Boca Raton.

The Golden Bell Education Foundation officially kicked off this initiative on Wednesday, December 14th , at Boca Raton Elementary School. We heard from Renee Elfe, Boca Raton Elementary Principal, Jamie Wyatt, Instructional Superintendent of South Region Elementary Schools, members of the Palm Beach County School Board, Troy McLellan, President & CEO of the Boca Raton Chamber, Chuck Stout, Chairman of the Golden Bell Education Foundation, and James Gavrilos, President & CEO of the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County about the importance of reading and the impact this program will have on our students. There was a large check presentation and the S.P.I.R.E. reading kits were distributed.

We could feel the gratitude and appreciation as we were welcomed by Boca Raton Elementary staff and students. Their Safety Patrollers escorted us to the Media Center, the 5th Graders sang us a Thank You song, and the 3rd graders read us a poem and gave us Thank You cards to take home with us.

The program will be monitored throughout the year and the progress will be tracked so we can accurately understand the effects this program has on our struggling readers. The Golden Bell Education Foundation is thrilled to be launching this program and is looking forward to carrying out more initiatives like this in the years to come.

The Foundation would not have made the impact it has without the support of our community. Supporting schools today, developing leaders tomorrow. Help

Foundation.
