Protecting You Beyond Your Business Since 1952, the Boca Chamber has worked diligently and strategically to ensure a pro-business environment and ultimately protect your business in Boca Raton. From endorsing and supporting pro-business candidates for elected office through our Business Leaders United Political Action Committee (BLU-PAC) to traveling to our state's capital to discuss our top business priorities, we are tirelessly working for you. This year, the impact of the Parkland Tragedy has swept through our community, our schools, our businesses and our Nation.

We have expanded our pillar of Protecting Business and are committed to defending you beyond the professional realm. By leading the business community to seek meaningful, commonsense and immediate change, we are working toward a safer community for all.

On February 28, we issued an official statement on the Parkland Tragedy. The statement outlined six recommendations for our law enforcement, educational agencies and business and community leaders with the hope of working together, holding each other accountable and ultimately, protecting our children.

BUSINESS LEADERS UNITED POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE (BLU-PAC)

WHAT'S THE POINT? The most effective way to protect your business is to elect those candidates who are not only in alignment with the issues in our Legislative Agenda, but will fight for those issues on your behalf.

At the heart of this initiative is the Boca Chamber’s political action committee, BLU-PAC. BLU-PAC’s mission is to thoroughly vet each candidate and their intentions as they relate to the Legislative Agenda, something business owners like you don’t have the time or resources to do for yourself.

BLU-PAC utilizes candidate questionnaires, extensive live interviews, as well as political and demographic research to select candidates for endorsement, contribute BLU-PAC funds to their campaigns, and assist them throughout the election cycle.

RESEARCH We research voter demographics, perform statistical analysis and select what candidates to review and what zip codes to target.

INTERVIEW

We review candidate legislative voting records and create and evaluate questionnaires to see where candidates stand on business issues.

We conduct extensive candidate interviews (in-person) in front of the BLU-PAC Board of Directors.

ENDORSE We endorse candidates who are in alignment with issues on our Legislative Agenda, and who will fight for them on our behalf.

George Sigalos

Q: You have been immersed in the Boca Raton community for years.

What does it mean for you to be involved in this community to ensure businesses can flourish?

A: Yes, since 1991 actually. I think Boca Raton is a phenomenal place to live and make your livelihood. I have been fortunate to meet a lot of great people over the years and being involved in the Chamber for over 20 years has allowed me to get to know and interact with many of our top business and community leaders on a regular basis. As a business owner, commercial property owner and long-time resident, I have a vested interest in seeing this community flourish.

A: I actually ran for City Council in 2003 against some very well-respected candidates, including Susan Haynie, Bill Hager and Emil Danciu. I have always been interested in politics at the local/state and national levels. When I was nominated to Chair BLU-PAC in 2013, just a few months after I joined the board, I accepted the role, because I considered it then and still consider it to be an honor and civic duty.

A Look Inside BLU-PAC

Q: What do you think differentiates BLU-PAC and its activities from other entities?

A: BLU-PAC exists to further the goals of the business community, and particularly the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, in the political process at the local and state level. We emphasize pro-business and pro-growth public policies by supporting candidates for local and state office who support these objectives. That means we always stay positive in our activities. We promote our endorsed candidates, but do not attack candidates who may not necessarily share our views or whom we do not otherwise endorse.

Something to Remember

Q: What is your favorite memory within your law practice? How have you gotten where you are today?

A: The memories that jump out at me are the couple of occasions when my children observed portions of some of the larger trials I have conducted over the years. I attribute my success as a lawyer to several factors: work hard, always pay attention to detail and prepare diligently. In the larger sense, providing excellent, diligent and zealous representation to clients and being heavily involved in the business and legal community are important.

Words to Live By

Q: What is a memorable quote that has impacted your life and career?

A: There are two. Former President Ronald Reagan once famously said “Government’s first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives.” That is my fundamental belief about the role of government in American society and the way we conduct our lives as Americans. In terms of my career as a business litigator, my favorite quote is from Sun Tzu in his Art of War, “every battle is won before it is fought.” Meaning, preparation and attention to detail are essential to success.

George Louis Sigalos is the managing partner of Simon & Sigalos, LLP. After practicing briefly in Chicago, he established his law practice in the Boca Raton area over 20 years ago and has developed strong ties to the community through his legal, city government and business affiliations.

CLASS UPDATE This year's Leadership class is off to a roaring start! With 43 business professionals making up the class, there is never a dull moment on the bi-monthly field trips. A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR As the 2018 Chair, I am very excited to be on this incredible journey with new and talented leaders from our community.

It has been such a privilege to dive into the people, places and organizations that make Palm Beach County so exceptional.

We are well underway, having already participated in Economic Development Day, where we had the opportunity to visit with some of our amazing corporate headquarters right here in Boca Raton including: Office Depot, ADT, NCCI, Modernizing Medicine, the Research Park at FAU and 3CInteractive. We also had the pleasure of hearing from Gary Hines, Senior Vice President of Administration of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County. Our city is thriving with corporate excellence!

During Environmental Awareness Day we visited Arthur Marshall Wildlife Refuge, Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority, Sugar Sand Park (where some of us grown men rode the carousel), Florida Power & Light, the Water Treatment Plant and Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. This day left us all inspired to further explore the many cultural and natural assets that are unique to Boca Raton and surrounding communities.

We are looking forward to our future sessions including: Human Services Day, Health Services Day, Media Day, Government Day, Education Day, Culture Day as well as Tourism Day. The Leadership Boca 2018 members will gain insight into the needs of our local community and likely find an organization that compels them to get involved and immersed in a local cause. I can't wait to fill you in again!

REGISTER FOR BCFD

BCFD 2017 Boca Chamber Festival Days (BCFD) is the Boca Chamber’s outreach to the nonprofit community. Nonprofit Chamber Members join forces with forprofit Chamber Members to hold a fun-filled event during the month of August!

The goal is to raise awareness and funds for our nonprofit member’s philanthropic efforts. All month long, residents of South Palm Beach County will travel from event to event, participating in everything that is great about Boca Raton - from the smaller events to the grand!

Events are allotted on a first-come, first served basis. While we cannot stop a second event from being held in a timeslot that already has an event scheduled, we strongly discourage it as we try to help each event get the maximum amount of attendees. Therefore, priority will be given to the first event to fill out and return the application with the $300 payment.

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

BOCA RATON MUSEUM OF ART SCHOOL TO EXHIBIT IN INTERNATIONAL PLAZA Doing business in West Boca just got a little more beautiful thanks to a public/private partnership between Liberty Equities, which owns and operates International Plaza, and the Boca Raton Museum Art School. The public spaces of International Plaza, including the North and South buildings’ atria and hallways, will soon showcase more than 50 paintings and photographs made by the school’s advanced students, on view from March 6th through July 26th. Building tenants and members of the public can meet the artists during an opening reception on Wednesday, April 11th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

“This project gives the students an opportunity to display their artworks to an audience that may not be familiar with the talents of the art school students,” says Walter O’Neill, Director of the Art School.

“What separates the animal kingdom from mankind is the ability to create art… We are very grateful to the Boca Raton Art Museum Art School and the generosity of the artists for sharing their creativity with us and the patrons of the building. Partnering with the Museum and School seemed like a fantastic way to get more involved with the community, brighten our surroundings, and encourage local artists to proudly display their talent.” says George Brock, President of Liberty Equities.

The 12th Annual Festival of the Arts BOCA, was presented by the Schmidt Family Centre for the Arts February 23rd – March 4th.

The 10 days flew by in a blur of spectacular music, great entertainment and thoughtful speakers. The performances were exceptional. Stand out moments include: Kathleen Battle’s breathtaking encores; the incredible joy in which The Klezmer All Stars infused their performance, and the exuberance of the Harold Lopez-Nussa Trio.

Bill Murray, Jan Vogler and Friends presented an electrifying night of music, poetry & prose. Cellist Jan Vogler, violinist Mira Wang and pianist Vanessa Perez accompanied Murray’s readings by Hemmingway, Twain and Thurber. Each musician was also featured as a soloist. Murray’s vocal stylings in selections such as Gershwin’s It Ain’t Necessarily So and Bernstein’s I Feel Pretty were skillfully acted and immensely charming.

The Festival closed with E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial with live orchestra.

The entire audience cheered as E.T. and Elliott took to the sky while the Symphonia played John Williams’ flying theme (pictured above).

The Golden Bell Education Foundation (Golden Bell) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that exists for the sole purpose of supporting the Boca Raton public school system and administering education programs that promote business skills and workforce readiness.

Established in 1991, Golden Bell has granted $1.4 Million since its inception, and has impacted 700,000 students in grades K-12. Each year, we invite all Boca Raton public schools to submit applications for a Golden Bell grant. The grant cycle is open from January through April. Funds are awarded to deserving and innovative programs. We are pleased to announce that $85,000 was awarded to Boca Raton public schools and scholarship programs in 2017!

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is an exciting program that transforms local middle and high school students into entrepreneurs. Through the nine-month long curriculum, students in grades 6-12 develop life skills, generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, and launch their very own companies. The program culminates with a shark tank style event as students pitch their ideas to a panel of investors. YEA! is held every Wednesday from 4:30 -7:30 p.m. at Saint Andrews School, September 2017 through May 2018.

Garret Goodman, Taste Tags Garret, a junior at Western High School, has previous experience in the food industry as a restaurant worker and food blogger. During that time, he witnessed an extensive amount of food waste.

Taste Tags sets out to prevent waste and enhance the consumer experience through time-temperature labels that accurately measure the shelf life of deli meats.

Under the leadership of the Boca Chamber's Board of Directors, President and CEO Troy McLellan issued a statement on February 28, 2018. The statement outlined six, comprehensive, multi-pronged strategies that are needed to affect meaningful change to ensure the safety of our children in schools.
