Though sleek and Jeep kind of rhyme, one does not normally associate the latter’s utility-focused product with the former description. Yet, the fifth generation model has emerged the most aerodynamic looking its ever been, while adding more space, luxury and tech. Read on.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship and will be leading the Jeep brand into a new era of premium refinement, innovative technology, advanced 4x4 capability and electrification,” says CEO Christian Meunier in a media release. “With a perfect balance of on-road dynamics, 4x4 capability and 4xe performance, the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most technologically advanced, luxurious and 4x4-capable Grand Cherokee ever.”

Designers have implemented a number of styling cues to give the vehicle a sportier appearance. For example, tapering the 10millimetre lower roof (offered in a contrast black on our Summit Reserve press tester) towards the rear, lowering the beltline and expanding the glass that also has the benefit of increasing driver visibility and light into the cabin. The signature seven-slot grille is slightly wider and curvier, particular at the ends, and hides a long-range radar behind the mesh. And the flattened, long hood accentuates the crossover’s athletic body panels.

The manufacturer rarely focuses on form and no function, and it’s the same here. Accessories like the spats found ahead of the front wheels (now available in sizes up to 21 inches) and vertical tailgate pillar spoilers smooth airflow helping performance and fuel economy. The 36-millimetre wider track compared to the outgoing example improves handling and manoeuvrability as well.

facing the first row passenger similar to the unit in the flagship Grand Wagoneer. This allows the user to easily play DJ or assistant navigator with access to his or her own controls. Is it really necessary? Probably not. Is it cool? Definitely yes. Even the driver benefits from a matching 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster.

Despite all the modern exterior touches, the interior evokes a sense of nostalgia thanks to the heritage wood panelling across the dash and below the windows. At the same time, there’s a premium feel to the space not quite seen before. The Palermo leather seats feature quilting on the bolsters complemented by the wrapped door cards. Small details like the bevelled aluminum transmission select knob add to the experience. And the 19-speaker McIntosh stereo bangs so hard a passenger commented she could feel her bones vibrating.

Fortunately, none of the changes on the vehicle compromise the ability to hold cargo — in fact, now an extra 40 litres has opened up. Behind the back bench is nearly 1,068 litres of space, which is enough to easily hold all the family luggage and gear for a weekend trip. Especially since the area is wide enough to accommodate a set of golf clubs lying horizontally.

Though, as mentioned above, customers may choose a partiallyelectrified 4xe plug-in hybrid variant, Trucks Plus evaluated the version running the tried-and-true 293-horsepower 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 mill. It might not have the raw power of the optional V8 but still On the 4x4 side of things, Summit and Summit Reserves utilize the Quadra-Drive II 4WD system packing a two-speed transfer case, 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio and rear electronic limited-slip differen-

tial. Up to 100 percent of the torque can be sent to either axle when necessary to provide optimal grip on a range of surfaces. Users can either set auto to let the computer determine the best settings, or choose one of the pre-set Selec-Terrain modes customized for Snow, Sand/Mud, Rock or Sport driving.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is built in Detroit, Michigan and starts at MSRP $52,545.
