Many muscle car owners are interested in knowing how many cars just like theirs were made. They may read in a Pontiac history book that 32,737 Pontiac GTO hardtops like their car were made for the 1970 model year. But then they will want to know how many had bucket seats and four-speed manual transmissions and Ram Air III V8s. And the next question is, how many were painted Code 75 Cardinal Red with a black interior?

In rare cases, some or all of these questions may have an answer, but keep this in mind. When General Motors Chairman Alfred P. Sloan wrote a book called My Years With General Motors in 1963, he pointed out that it was theoretically possible, due to the wide assortment of options and accessories offered in 1959, for Chevrolet Motor Div. to manufacture an entire year’s worth of cars without any two being 100 percent identical.

When it comes to production totals of cars by colour, it usually—but not always—gets hard to come up with specific numbers. Every year, industry sources report the most popular colours. For example, in 2020, White was first in popularity, Black was second and Grey was third. These numbers are interesting, but they are not exactly what enthusiasts or collectors want to know. However, some car nuts—such as Corvette fans--have been able to come up with specific information on how many cars were built in each colour.

That was simple in 1953, when all 300 firstyear Corvettes were Polo White. However, the next year Corvette output jumped to 3,634 cars of which 3,200 were Polo White, 300 were Pennant Blue, 100 were Sportsman Red and four were Black. If you haven’t guessed it yet, a Black 1954 Corvette with good documentation is worth a bundle.

Mustang 50th anniversary window sticker was picked up in Charlotte, N.C. in 201.

The Corvette Black Book by Mike Antonick, which is published on a regular ongoing basis, carries the colour breakdowns for Corvettes of most, if not all, model years. But such information for other cars isn’t as easy to access.

Some car buyers could care less about colour. They’re willing to take whatever nice new car is on the lot that day that fits their budget. They consider a car just another appliance that takes them from point A to point B. But car enthusiasts and collectors are different. They care about how their car looks and they care even more if it’s one of few made in a certain colour. Like that Black ’54 Vette, they’re hoping the colour adds value.

The Mazda Miata is a good example. Over the years, the Miata’s styling didn’t change much, but in 1990, the manufacturer released six cars in special colours. All six had an “X” colour code. These are known by enthusiasts as the “Colour Cars.” The six rare Miata colours are Raspberry Metallic; Medium Blue; Yellow Metallic; Teal Later Mazdas also featured some rare colours such as Lazer Blue (a 2002 special order colour); Evolution Orange (offered in 2000 only); Splash Green (2003 only); Blazing Yellow (2002 only); Vivid Yellow (a special order colour); Black Cherry (2004 and 2005 only); Razor Blue (2005 only) and Lava Orange (2005 Mazdaspeed Miata only). Mazda made a big deal about such colours. One year, at the Chicago Auto Show, Mazda featured the owners of cars with rare colours wearing T-shirts that matched the colours of their cars!

In the good old days, different automakers had different ways of maintaining production totals. Trying to find the numbers were part of my job for awhile and it was frustrating. This was in the late-1970s and on one visit to Chrysler’s old (ancient?) W.T. Keller Building in Detroit, the company historian pointed to a cardboard box and said, “They’re all in there, but nobody knows how to make heads or tails of them.” In contrast, some mid-1950s records obtained from American Motors listed the options installed on each individual car (and may well have included how many were made in each colour).

As the automakers became computerized, more and better production data were recorded. The General Motors Marketing Department even kept production totals for all of the competitive makes and models (although not by colour). Computers made it easier to capture the numbers and organize them in new ways. Writer Jerry Heasley told me that when he put together his Production Figure Book for U.S. Cars in 1977, he had to purchase computer time from Ford Motor Co. to get its numbers.

Apparently, Ford started keeping more detailed production information, some of which has been shared with automotive historians and car clubs. For example, modern Mustang fans are pretty colour

conscious, too. Mark and Linda Veech of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin prove this. They bought a new Mustang on June 10, 2006. Their car was painted Legend Lime, a “retro” color based on one offered for earlier Mustangs. They bought the car after they found out that Ford was discontinuing the Legend Lime colour.

“We just had to have one in that colour,” they said. The couple called the Mustang their “Fun Pony” and they thought that Legend Lime was a fun colour. The car was a V6-powered Premium Coupe with the Pony package with a base price of $20,090. The V6 Pony Package cost $1,195 and included P235/55ZR17 A/S tires; Mustang logo front floor mats; a body colour rear deck lid spoiler; Pony tape stripes; a 17-in. aluminum mini spare wheel with tire; anti-lock brakes; traction control; 17-in. premium painted cast-aluminum wheels; a black tape stripe; Pony centre caps and a satin aluminum panel. Other extras on the car were an interior upgrade package costing $460 and a wheel locking kit for $50.

Legend Lime Clearcoat Metallic paint (Code P1) was the leastordered Mustang colour in both the 2005 and 2006 model years. Ford records show that it was applied to just 13,899 Mustangs over those two production runs. The colour is similar to the Code 30Y-3675 Lime Gold Poly colour used on 1967-1969 Fords and Mercurys of the same years. This Mustang also came with a Dark Charcoal cloth interior and front bucket seats.

Since Mark and Linda purchased their car, other Mustang fans have picked up on the fact that the Legend Lime Clearcoat Metallic cars stand out in a crowd. In fact, there are two Internet registries where the owners of Legend Lime Mustangs can enter their cars. The first is on Facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/37315759679/ ?ref=share. The second is called the Ford Special Vehicle Registry and it can be found at the following Web address: https://specialvehicleregistry.com/vehicle_details?v=504. five-speed manual transmission. They took very good care of their car. It was never driven during salty Wisconsin winters, but in warm months the couple had a blast cruising around in it and taking it to car shows.

In the summer of 2013, they added new hood graphics, a tri-bar Pony emblem and a Ford oval on a glossy black hood. They also used glossy black graphics on the rear. Although the car was used

gently, it traveled a bit. In the spring of 2014, Mark and Linda drove it to Daytona Beach, Fla. They also went to Charlotte, N.C. for a Mustang 50th anniversary bash held there. They described their journey as a “great 3,500-mile trip.”

Mark and Linda learned that having a car that’s somewhat unique and different can be fun. Their Fun Pony provided them with good times, road trips and adventures. It’s pretty clear that their Legend Lime Mustang was more than an appliance to them!

Hawk High Performance Street (HPS) Brake Pads

Hawk’s High Performance Street, or HPS, brake pads increase stopping power on street-legal vehicles utilizing a brake pad compound that offers a higher coefficient of friction over stock brake pads and can provide 20-40percent more stopping power and higher resistance to brake fade than most standard replacement pads. Less fade means you will have better pedal feel and more consistent performance, all while providing ultimate durability and generating less dust. The pads are meant to work with iron/metal rotors.

COMP Cams Engine Break-In Oil Additive

In recent years, oil manufacturers have removed Zinc and many other additives from motor oils which can cause issues during the critical break-in process that can possibly lead to a failure. To combat this, COMP Cams’ Engine Break-In Oil Additive is designed to extend the durability of internal engine components such as camshafts, valve train components and all moving parts in your new or rebuilt engine. This is achieved by using a special blend of extreme pressure additives no longer available in most motor oils.
