Shop Tour: Jellybean AutoCrafters

Catering to enthusiasts in the Lower Mainland and beyond since 2004, Jellybean AutoCrafters is no stranger to upgrades and customizations. However, its biggest project in recent history might be the garage itself, which almost doubled in size permitting a maximum 20 cars to be tended to at once, and more offerings added to an ever-growing list.

“Our goal has been to get into electric performance car conversions and service work for several years, but the smaller facility wasn’t big enough. In order to lower the waiting period to bring vehicles into our shop, and provide extra services, we expanded from 7,500 squarefeet to 14,500 by taking over the three units next door in 2021,” says Ewald Penner, who co-owns the business with his brother Kurt.

“The body shop area gained another paint booth, so we can now turn out three times as many paint jobs as before. There’s four new hoists and a top-of-the line John Bean wheel alignment machine, plus a custom adapter system for lowered cars so tailored wheel alignments not only suit the car, but the owner’s driving style too. We’ve also acquired additional tools and other equipment allowing us to perform nearly any task on a classic vehicle.”

And the types of rides the two brothers and their staff of 14 wrench on are eclectic to say the least. From concours-quality examples to resto-mods and race cars, he says, “If it’s cool and you want it built, we’ll build it and it’ll be completely awesome!” Penner added the number of favourites is too long to name; however, one standout is the marquee project found on the website: a 1966 Mustang being put together to compete in the Targa Newfoundland rally race and other events including the infamous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado and Bonneville Speed Week in Utah.

Dubbed “Unstabled,” this piece of modified American muscle features a 750-horsepower supercharged Ford 5.0-litre Coyote engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The beefy Chassisworks suspension is capable of handling up to 1.06g on a skidpad — just like a 2020 Chevrolet Corvette — and sits beneath a handcrafted wide body that’s three inches wider per side in the front and four in the back while keeping the original lines intact.

As mentioned above, the move towards EV work was over a decade in the making, and is finally possible following the expansion. Jellybean has one on the go right now, though Penner and co. are

keeping things under wraps until completion, sharing only that the hot rod mystery machine is propelled by a Tesla S motor and 16 Tesla batteries.

Besides full builds, the shop also makes one-off customized parts like alloy wheels from design to production, 3-D printed dash faces and instrument clusters with modern instrumentation and technology. And to top it all off, customers can bring their classic automobiles in for standard servicing and soon, vehicle inspections as well.

Eibach’s PRO-PLUS Kit for the 2015-2022 Dodge Challenger SRT 392 models feature PRO-KIT Springs and ANTI-ROLL sway bars that work together to provide a stiffer, more aggres sive suspen sion feel. The springs lower the car 0.6-in. in the front and a full 1-in. in the rear which lowers the car’s centre of gravity for better handling characteristics, while the sway bars keep everything stiffer, which reduces body roll and allows for faster cornering and quicker stopping. Installation is quick and easy with no major modifications necessary.

Wilwood is now offering six-lug, truck-grade rear brake conversions for 1963-1987 Chevy C10 and GMC C15 pickups and related SUVs. The kits are made to complement existing six-lug front brake kits and come with either 11in. (DynaPro) or 12.19-in. (Dynalite) rotors, both with internal drum parking brakes. Both the DynaPro and Dynalite calipers are machined from stress-flow forged aluminum with four stainless steel pistons and come with fade-free SmartPad BP-10 compound brake pads. The calipers are available in glossy red or black powder coat or 22 additional colour options.

Edelbrock’s E-Force Stage 2 Supercharger kit for the 2018-2021 Ford Mustang GT with the 5.0L V8 engine utilizes the high-efficiency Eaton TVS R2650 rotor assembly with a high-twist lobe design. Larger bearings and more robust timing gears are also used to create an ultra-smooth and linear torque curve with more usable performance at all points in the power band. The kit comes with a 103mm throttle body, high-flow 113mm air intake system, upgraded 50 lb/hr port fuel injectors, an 8-rib supercharger belt drive and a plug-and-play fuel pump voltage booster.
