PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently voted to endorse and support Proposition B on the November 5th City of Joplin ballot. Why?

4 YES on Prop B will improve the recruitment and retention of Joplin police officers and firefighters.

4 YES on Prop B is a 1/2 cent sales tax dedicated to paying retirement benefits promised to retired Joplin police officers and firefighters.

4 YES on Prop B closes the City’s underfunded pension plan and switches retirement benefits to a more cost-effective and competitive state retirement plan called LAGERS.

4 YES on Prop B will save Joplin taxpayers more than $28 million dollars.

4 YES on Prop B means safer streets, safer schools, safer trails, and safer neighborhoods.

Successful entrepreneurs tend to be resilient, decisive and competitive. They possess the ability to see opportunities that others may not see, and to work hard to see these visions accomplished. They tend to be innovative and able to see how technology might be used to make their firms more efficient. While there is not a specific path to success, following are some tips that may assist you in your journey to be a successful entrepreneur:

NETWORK WITH OTHER ENTREPRENEURS Find other entrepreneurs that you can meet with and exchange ideas. Being able to connect with encouraging, positive, forward thinking people will influence you to become more driven. Joining community organizations like the chamber of commerce or civic groups will give you access to successful entrepreneurs. Find mentors who will advise you and can act as a confidential sounding board for your ideas.

LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS Successful entrepreneurs spend time carefully analyzing their customers on a continual basis. You need to understand what problems your company can solve for customers. In order to successfully satisfy your customer’s needs and to communicate with them using various marketing tools, you need to know who they are, and what, when, how, and why they will purchase your products or services. Talk to your customers and listen to their needs.

ENJOY YOUR WORK Make certain that you enjoy the line of work you are going to pursue. You need to relish your business endeavors in order to be successful. People who don’t believe in their ideas, projects and companies often don’t succeed. If you are going to build a better mousetrap, you must have a vision on how you will accomplish your goal.

CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE As an entrepreneur, you will need to be agile in order to perform well and accomplish your goals. You will need to continually learn and adapt as new technology and information becomes available. In order to avoid failure, you need to be able to adapt to environmental factors that can be difficult to overcome. Educate yourself on new management techniques, changes in the marketplace, and new technology.

MANAGE YOUR FINANCES Cash is king and you must be able to manage your cash flow in order to stay in business. You will need to be able to control your expenses, generate revenue, and make profit in order to succeed. This will mean that you will need to have knowledge of budgets and financial management techniques.

CHECK OUT YOUR COMPETITION You need to understand the industry in which you are operating, the other businesses you compete with, and trends that can affect the future profitability of your company. Competitive intelligence is an on-going process. You do not want to emulate your competitors, you need to be aware of their actions. Understand your marketplace.

BE HONEST AND HAVE INTEGRITY In the long run, honesty pays off. Being a person of your word, delivering what your company promised, and treating your business dealings with integrity will help you to succeed. The reputation you develop in business will follow you and reflect on the opportunities that others will want to offer you. Customers and suppliers want to deal with people they can trust. Longterm trust is earned.

Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. “Passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding,” raves the London Independent; the New York Times extols its “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism.” In 1998, cellist Nina Lee joined the Quartet, succeeding founding member Michael Kannen.

The following season the Quartet became the first EnsembleIn-Residence at Princeton University, where they taught and performed for 15 years. In the fall of 2014, the Quartet became the Resident String Quartet at the Yale School of Music, succeeding the Tokyo Quartet in that position. At Yale, they perform in concert each semester, and work closely with the students in chamber music contexts. Have you been hitting the trails?

Walking and biking trails make physical activity more convenient, and promote a culture of wellness where community members value healthy habits over not so healthy habits. Trails connect people with places, making it easier to walk or bike their commute to run errands or go to work. This is especially true in communities that lack sidewalks or bike lanes. This alternative to the traditional commute can help reduce traffic congestion and car crashes, as well as air pollution.

Despite research showing the health benefits of physical activity (weight maintenance, disease prevention, and improved mood to name a few), most U.S. adults and children are not reaching movement goals throughout the day. The Center for Disease Control recommends that children and adolescents get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Adults need 150 minutes (two and a half hours) of aerobic activity every week.

Recommendations used to lean toward continued or sustained physical activity to achieve any health benefits. Current research says any movement counts toward reaching the goals outlined above. The main goal is to move more and sit less throughout the day. In fact, people who sit for more than an accumulated eight hours a day are at a higher risk of premature death than those who find opportunities for movement in their daily routine.

Use of cycling trails is a great way to increase your level of movement throughout the day.

Cycling has many health benefits. As I’ve already mentioned, physically active lifestyles help prevent diseases and aid in weight maintenance or loss, but the benefits go far beyond that:

n Cycling is easier on joints than jogging. n It’s an aerobic (heart health) workout, as well as muscle strengthening. n Cycling helps improve one’s ability to perform activities of daily living and balance (which becomes important as we age). n Promotes bone growth.

All of these benefits combine to help physically active individuals live 12

a longer, higher quality of life, meaning they aren’t living with diseases and conditions that limit their abilities to do what they want and need to do.

How does cycling promote weight maintenance? Everything we do requires energy. Eating, talking, walking, and texting all require energy. Energy is measured in calories. We take in calories through the food we eat, and we use (burn) calories through the activities that we do.

Many factors determine how many calories will be used in a given activity, including age, gender, and weight. As a general guideline, someone who weighs 150 pounds will burn about 203 calories in just 30 minutes of cycling (at 10 mph). If you weigh more than 150 lbs., you may burn more calories per minute and fewer calories per minute if you weigh less than 150 lbs.
