The recent paintings of

was planted and grew from this original connection to the world around us.

The beauty of Joost’s paintings is that he is able to peel away the accumulated expectations and assumptions, so many of the received gestures of art, and somehow recapture that initial sense of color, shape, the balancing of form and volume, line and space. He refers to the spark that remains a mystery, that is the beginning of a work. Je suppose qu’il ne sait pas Je sais que Joost de Jonge a puisé son inspiration pour ses exactement lui-même comment il fait. Late this summer, e-mailing to this writer about a particular painting – and, by inference, his new work in general – Joost de Jonge observed that, ‘in painterly style it is linked with van Gogh and Karel Appel (oils only/wet upon wet).

These are likely to be the biggest influences in my work today, together with Mondrian’s musically attuned manner of composing and Cézanne’s sensibility in stroke… and for color relations. The influence of Appel and van Gogh comes from their gestural style, but mostly as to how they approach the painting as a vehicle of expression! Also… their poetic approach and some­what tragic individual emotional lives is close to my personal conception of everyday life.’

I read this declaration with considerable interest, and even a little surprise. The nature of the influences on this devoted painter, and self-avowed neo-modernist, makes perfect sense: the painterly comes before the pictorial, and does so in order to manifest the symbolic, the metaphoric, and the directly experiential all at once. But, except for Cézanne, the modernist painters de Jonge cites here are all Dutch. Indeed, the young artist seems to stress this, electing to cite Mondrian’s ‘musi­cally attuned manner of composing’ rather than Kandinsky’s, for instance; and the concern Appel and van Gogh – instead of, say, Jorn and Munch – maintained for ‘approaching the painting as a vehicle of expression.’ Clearly, de Jonge regards himself as an inheritor and sustainer of a national heritage – an unusual attitude for an artist to assume today.

Of course, de Jonge’s observation, for all its patriotic ramifications, does not infer any sort of nationalism, tribalism, or racism. That would be truly (and blessedly) rare. Rather, de Jonge speaks to a sense of genius loci, of a spirit particular to a place and community embodied in, or at least happening to favor, certain aesthetic practices and certain philosophical attitudes. The qualities de Jonge seeks to emulate in the work of van Gogh, Mondrian, and Appel are not foreign to the art produced by, say, Spaniards, Finns, or Brazilians; but they present themselves in Dutch painting in such a way as to provide a distinctive model of praxis.

This writer knows from personal experience – visiting museums and galleries and art fairs with de Jonge – that he maintains a keen interest in modern Dutch painting of all kinds. I have noted during these visits de Jonge’s enthusiasm for and insight into artists as seemingly diverse as Jan

Toorop, Bart van der Leck, Bram & Geer van Velde, Anton Heyboer, and Corneille. One’s sinuous line, another’s painterly opacity, yet another’s formal rhythms, all caught de Jonge’s informed but ever-hungry eye during our visits, helping to enhance not only my own experience of these painters but my comprehension of what makes de Jonge himself tick. He saw in these countrymen practical and intellectual forebears, equal in urgency to their counterparts in France, Russia, and Germany and yet closer in spirit, their ecstasy of inquiry heightened equally by sensuous technique, ruminative self-criticism, and expansive association with other art forms and perceptual constructs.

Is there a ‘Dutchness’ to the work of these artists? Is there even a ‘Dutchness’ that de Jonge himself can identify? Is the balance we see in their work – a temperamental (that is, optical, physical, spiritual, and intellectual) balance between heaviness and lightness, profundity and superficiality, gravity and insouciance – distinct to that work as opposed to the work of German or Russian or American or French painters? And is it indeed something that recurs in de Jonge’s work? I would argue so. There is a permission Dutch painters seem to give themselves – and perhaps one another – to embrace contradictory sensations and attitudes, so as to be able to explore complex states of mind and being from, you might say, above and below at the same time. Even van Gogh’s paintings (the late ones, that is) crackle with a surprising jocularity, mani­fested in his palette and the brio of his brushstroke, and Mondrian was only too happy to infuse his work with a jazz effervescence when he moved to New York, knowing it would enhance rather than betray the principles of neo-plasticism.

In these artists’ wake, certainly, de Jonge’s willingness to embody his own concepts in colorful, vivacious images – images you fully expect to begin dancing before your eyes – makes sense as a pictorial strategy.

But it also makes sense as a historical strategy. De Jonge quite consciously ties himself to the aesthetic practices and philosophies of early modernism – Worringer, Focillon – and the late 18th to early 19th century standpoints – Schiller, Hegel – out of which they in turn sprang. As such, embodying himself as a neo-modernist, de Jonge seeks not so much to revive modernist practice as to refuse to regard it as dormant in the first place, contributing to its endurance by contributing to its discourse. Distinctively but traditionally; de Jonge clearly understands modernism as a tradition – Rosenberg’s ‘tradition of the new’ – and does not simply mirror, but maintains, its insights and praxes.

De Jonge’s faithfulness to modernist tents has been noted before, but I reiterate it to clarify his particular identification with Dutch modernism – the modernism closest to his reach and impacting him most directly, certainly in his formative years. Genius loci springs from a soil enriched first and foremost by its own earlier geniuses, and de Jonge’s imagination and eye have been fertilized – not exclusively, of course, but particularly – by Appel’s, van Velde’s, Mondrian’s, and van Gogh’s. Whether or not this makes Joost de Jonge a genius, it makes him very much a Dutch painter, transcending his borders through his art but inhabiting those borders in his art.

A finales del verano recibí un correo electrónico de Joost de Jonge. El motivo era una pintura concreta, pero en realidad también trataba de su nueva obra como totalidad. En su mensaje, De Jonge observaba que su nueva obra estaba ‘vinculada a Van Gogh y Karel Appel en lo que se refiere a su estilo pictórico (exclusivamente óleo / húmedo sobre húmedo). Estos dos pintores son, probablemente, las influencias más importantes en mi obra actual, junto la musicalidad de la composición de Mondriaan y la sensibilidad de los pinceles de Cézanne… también por las relaciones entre los colores. Appel y Van Gogh han influido en mi obra porque prefirieron un estilo gestual y, en especial, por la forma de ver la pintura como vehículo de expresión. Su aproximación poética y su vida emocional, un tanto trágica, también se acercan a mi concepto personal de ver la vida día a día.’

Leí su mensaje con gran interés y ligeramente sorprendido. Que estas sean las influencias que marcan a este entregado pintor, que se llama a sí mismo neomodernista, es muy lógico: lo pictórico precede a lo visual, y de este modo se manifiesta, al unísono, lo simbólico, lo metafórico y lo que procede de la observación directa. Sin embargo, menos Cézanne, el resto de los pintores modernistas que nombra De Jonge son neerlan­deses. El joven artista parece incluso hacer hincapié en este hecho, remitiéndose a la ‘musicalidad de la composición’ de Mondriaan, allí donde

su preferencia podía haber sido, por ejemplo, Kandinsky. Nombra también la importancia que Appel y Van Gogh ven en la pintura ‘como vehículo de expresión’, mientras que podía haberse acordado, en su lugar, de Jorn y Munch. Está claro que De Jonge se ve a sí mismo como heredero y guardián del patrimonio nacional.

Una actitud que sorprende en un artista contemporáneo.

Las observaciones de De Jonge, aunque puedan parecer patrióticas, no implican ningún tipo de nacionalismo, tribalismo o racismo. Eso sí que resultaría verdaderamente (y, por suerte) extraño. Sin embargo, De Jonge alude a un sentimiento de genius loci, al carácter de un lugar y comunidad determinados, representados por determinadas prácticas estéticas y actitudes filosóficas, o que, al menos, presentan esta tendencia. Las características en la obra de Van Gogh, Mondriaan y Appel que persigue De Jonge, también pueden encontrarse en la obra de, por ejemplo, artistas españoles, finlandeses o brasileños; pero, en la pintura neerlandesa, estas características se manifiestan de un modo tal que le ofrecen un claro modelo para su práctica pictórica.

Sé por experiencia propia, nacida de nuestras visitas juntos a museos, galerías y ferias de arte, que De Jonge sigue con gran interés a los pintores modernos de todo tipo, originarios de los Países Bajos. Durante estas visitas, siempre me ha impactado el entusiasmo de De Jonge y su comprensión de un conjunto de artistas muy diferentes entre sí: Jan Toorop, Bart van der Leck, Bram y Geer van Velde, Anton Heyboer y Corneille, por ejemplo. En uno, le llama la atención la sinuosidad de las líneas, en otro, la opacidad del estilo pictórico y, en el de más allá, los ritmos formales.

Todos, sin excepción, atraen su mirada experimentada y siempre curiosa con lo que yo no solo he llegado a saber más de estos pintores, sino que también he podido entender mejor lo que impulsa a De Jonge en su obra. En la teoría y en la práctica, considera a estos compatriotas como sus predecesores. No es que sean más importantes que los artistas franceses, rusos o alemanes, sino que lo que los estimula está más próximo a su propia realidad: la extasia­ da búsqueda de estos artistas viene impulsada tanto por la técnica de los sentidos como por su meditada autocrítica y profunda influencia en otras formas artísticas y estructuras perceptivas. ¿Hay algo típicamente ‘neerlandés’ en la obra de estos artistas? ¿Podría indicar De Jonge lo que para él significa ‘neerlandés’? ¿El equilibrio que vemos en esas obras (un equilibrio temperamental -es decir, óptico, físico, espiritual

e intelectual- entre lo alto y lo bajo, lo pesado y lo ligero, lo profundo y lo superficial, lo serio y lo despreocupado) es algo específico de esa obra y opuesto a la obra de los pintores alemanes, rusos, estadounidenses o franceses? ¿Y vemos ese equilibrio también en la obra de De Jonge? Yo creo que sí. Parece como si los pintores neerlandeses se dieran permiso a sí mismos y, quizás, también entre sí, para abrazar esas sensaciones y actitudes contradictorias, de modo que puedan investigar, simultáneamente, estados de ánimo y formas de ser complejas en todos sus extremos. Incluso la obra (tardía) de Van Gogh sorprende por su alegre carácter juguetón, que se expresa en su paleta y apasionada técnica de pincel. Tras su traslado a Nueva York, Mondriaan no dudó en infundir a su trabajo una efervescente nota de jazz, porque sabía que así, no solo no traicionaría los principios del neoplasticismo, sino que los acentuaría. Siguiendo las huellas de estos dos artistas, De Jonge traduce sus ideas en imágenes vivas y llenas de color, imágenes que parece que vayan a romper a bailar en el momento menos pensado. Desde el punto de la técnica pictórica, una estrategia muy lógica.

Sin embargo, desde una perspectiva histórica también resulta lógico. De Jonge se vincula conscientemente a las prácticas estéticas y filosofías del modernismo temprano, Worringer, Focillon, y a los puntos de vista de finales del siglo XVIII, principios del XIX, Schiller, Hegel, que los sucedieron. De modo que se podría decir que De Jonge es ‘neomodernista’ y con este título no es que aspire a revivi­r la práctica modernista, sino que, al contrario, esta corriente, sigue estando muy viva para él e intenta reforzarla mezclándose en su discurso, a través de sus propias opiniones, pero con raíces firmes en la tradición. De Jonge comprende muy bien que el modernismo es una tradición. La ‘tradi-ción de lo nuevo’ según Rosenbergs y, por eso, no se limita a reflejar sus criterios y actitudes, sino a reforzarlos.

Ya hemos observado antes la fidelidad de De Jonge a los pilares del modernismo, pero me gustaría resaltar, una vez más, que se identifica, en especial, con el modernismo neerlandés que es el que le resulta más cercano y que le ha influido más directamente, sobre todo, en los primeros años de su formación como pintor. Las raíces de las que nace el genius loci, se han fortalecido sobre todo con el ‘fer­mento’ de sus primeros genios y Appel, Van Velde, Mondriaan y Van Gogh han potenciado, no en exclusiva, pero sí especialmente, la imaginación y la observación visual de De Jonge. No sé si

podríamos decir que Joost de Jonge también es un genio, pero en cualquier caso es un pintor auténticamente neerlandés que, con su arte, supera fronteras, mientras que, al mismo tiempo, permanece fiel a esas fronteras en su arte.

VAN J OOST D E J ONGE

Eind deze zomer kreeg ondergetekende een e-mail van Joost de Jonge. De aanleiding was een specifiek schilderij, maar het betrof eveneens zijn nieuwe werk als geheel. In die e-mail merk­te De Jonge op dat zijn nieuwe werk ‘qua schildertechniek gelieerd is aan Van Gogh en Karel Appel (alleen olieverf /nat-in-nat). Deze twee schilders vormen waarschijnlijk de belangrijkste invloeden in mijn huidige werk, samen met de muzikaal gestemde composities van Mondriaan en de fijn­gevoelige penseelvoering van Cézanne… ook vanwege de kleurverhoudingen. Appel en Van Gogh hebben mij beïnvloed door hun voorliefde voor het grote gebaar, maar vooral door hoe ze het schilderij gebruiken als middel om zich uit te drukken! Ook... ligt hun poëtische benadering en hun licht­tragische mentaliteit dicht bij mijn eigen persoonlijke visie op het dagelijks leven.’

Ik las deze bekentenis met grote belangstelling, zelfs met lichte verbazing. Dat deze toegewijde schilder, en zelfverklaard neo-modernist, door deze invloeden is gevormd, staat buiten kijf en is volkomen logisch: het schilderkunstige gaat vooraf aan het picturale, omdat zo het symbolische, het me­ ta­ forische en het direct waarneembare zich allemaal tegelijk kunnen manifesteren. Maar afgezien van Cézanne zijn alle modernistische schilders die De Jonge hier noemt, Nederlanders. De jonge kunstenaar lijkt hier zelfs de nadruk op te willen leggen, daar hij refereert aan de ‘muzikale’ composities van Mondriaan, waar hij ook de voorkeur aan die van Kandinsky had kunnen geven. Hij noemt het belang dat Appel en Van Gogh hechtten aan ‘het gebruik van het schilderij als middel om zich uit te drukken’, terwijl dat ook opgaat voor bijvoor­beeld het werk van Jorn en Munch. Het is duidelijk dat De Jonge zichzelf ziet als erfgenaam en bewaker van een na­tionaal erfgoed – een houding die je niet verwacht van een kun­stenaar van deze tijd.

Aan De Jonges observaties – hoe vaderlandslievend ze ook mogen klinken – liggen natuurlijk geen nationalistische, triballistische of racistische motieven ten grondslag. Dat zou pas echt zeldzaam zijn (gelukkig maar). Veeleer doelt De Jonge op een gevoel van genius loci, op het karakter van een bepaalde plek, op een gemeenschap die wordt belichaamd door – of in elk geval geneigd is tot – bepaalde esthetische praktijken en filosofische houdingen. De eigenschappen van het werk van Van Gogh, Mondriaan en Appel die De Jonge wenst na te volgen, zijn ook terug te vinden in het werk van bijvoorbeeld Spaanse, Finse of Braziliaanse kunstenaars; maar in Nederlandse schilderijen manifesteren deze eigenschappen zich op zodanige wijze dat ze hem een duidelijk model bieden voor een schilderkunstige praktijk.

Ik weet uit eigen ervaring – door gezamenlijke bezoeken aan musea, galeries en kunstbeurzen – dat De Jonge moderne Nederlandse schilders in alle soorten en maten met grote belangstelling volgt. Tijdens deze bezoeken werd ik getroffen door De Jonges enthousiasme voor en inzicht in zeer uiteenlopende kunstenaars, zoals Jan Toorop, Bart van der Leck, Bram en Geer van Velde, Anton Heyboer en Corneille. Bij de een trof hem de golvende lijn, bij een ander de opaciteit van de schilderstijl, bij weer een ander de formele ritmes. Zonder uitzondering troffen ze De Jonges geoefende maar altijd nieuwsgierige oog, waardoor ik niet alleen meer over deze schilders te weten kwam, maar ook beter ging begrijpen wat De Jonge zelf drijft. Theoretisch en praktisch beschouwt hij deze landgenoten als zijn voorlopers. Ze zijn niet belangrijker dan hun Franse, Russische of Duitse tegenhangers, maar in wat hen motiveert, staan ze wel dichter bij hem: hun extatische zoektocht wordt even sterk gedreven door hun zintuiglijke techniek als door hun doordachte zelfkritiek en brede beïnvloeding door andere kunstvormen en perceptuele concepties.

Is er iets specifiek ‘Nederlands’ aan het werk van deze kunstenaars? Kan De Jonge daarin zelf het ‘Nederlandse’ aanwijzen? Is de balans die we in hun werk zien – een balans in temperament (namelijk optisch, fysiek, spiritueel en intellectueel) tussen hoog en laag, zwaar en licht, diepzinnig en oppervlakkig, ernstig en onbekommerd – specifiek voor dat werk, en ontbreekt die balans in het werk van Duitse of Russische of Amerikaanse of Franse schilders?

En zien we die balans ook terug in het werk van De Jonge?

Ik geloof van wel. Het lijkt wel alsof Nederlandse schilders zichzelf – en misschien ook elkaar – toestemming geven om tegenstrijdige sensaties en attitudes te omarmen, zodat ze

complexe mentaliteiten en gemoedstoestanden, in het hele spectrum, van het hooggestemde tot het grofstoffelijke, als het ware tegelijk kunnen onderzoeken. Zelfs het (late) werk van Van Gogh verrast door zijn knisperende speelsheid, die zich uit in zijn palet en vurige penseelvoering. Na zijn verhuizing naar New York zag Mondriaan er geen been in om een bruisende jazzy toets aan zijn werk toe te voegen, omdat hij wist dat dit de principes van het neoplasticisme eerder zou benadrukken dan verraden. In het spoor van deze twee kunstenaars geeft De Jonge zijn eigen ideeën vorm in kleurrijke, levendige beelden – beelden waarvan je ieder moment verwacht dat ze voor je ogen gaan dansen. Schildertechnisch is dat een begrijpelijke strategie.

Maar ook in historisch perspectief is dat begrijpelijk.

De Jonge verbindt zichzelf heel bewust met de esthetische werk- en denkwijzen van het vroege modernisme – Worringer, Focillon – en met die van eind 18e en begin 19e eeuw – Schiller, Hegel – waaruit deze zijn voortgekomen.

Je zou De Jonge een ‘neomodernist’ kunnen noemen en in die hoedanigheid streeft hij er niet zozeer naar de modernistische praktijk te doen herleven, integendeel, voor hem is deze stroming nog steeds springlevend en hij probeert haar ook te versterken door zich in het theoretische discours te mengen. Hij heeft geheel eigen opvattingen, maar staat toch stevig in de traditie. De Jonge ziet heel goed dat het modernisme een traditie is – Rosenbergs ‘traditie van het nieuwe’ – en hij weerspiegelt haar inzichten en werkwijzen niet alleen, hij versterkt ze.

De trouw van De Jonge aan de grondbeginselen van het modernisme is eerder opgemerkt, maar ik vestig er nog eens de aandacht op om duidelijk te maken waarom hij zich specifiek met het Nederlandse modernisme identificeert – het modernisme dat het dichtst bij hem staat en hem het meest direct beïnvloedt en heeft beïnvloed, zeker in de jaren die hem als schilder gevormd hebben. De bodem waarop een genius loci ontspruit, is vooral verrijkt met de ‘mest’ van haar eerste genieën, en de verbeelding en het oog van De Jonge zijn ‘bemest’ – uiteraard niet uitsluitend maar wel het sterkst – door Appel, Van Velde, Mondriaan en Van Gogh. Ik weet niet of dit Joost de Jonge ook tot een genie bestempelt. Maar het bestempelt hem in elk geval tot een zeer Nederlands schilder, die door zijn kunst die grenzen ontstijgt, maar in zijn kunst die grenzen trouw blijft.

Since childhood, De Jonge has shown great affinity for color. His earliest memories are those of big color-fields, which he experienced when he was just a newborn child. Especially his grand parents from

J o n g e his mother’s side of the family were important for his development. His grandfather collected poetry, paintings and graphics. His grandmother was an avid amateur painter. They used to walk together in the orchard behind the house and look at birds, which they drew together upon their return, at the table in the living room, in front of a large window looking out on the countryside. His grandmother was the one to introduce him to the finer aspects and mysteries of oil painting.

An artistic talent often is multi-facetted, but with Joost de Jonge it soon became clear, that his hart and special interest were to be dedicated to abstraction. The emotional quality of an artwork has always been of main importance to him.

His work is shown in many different countries at international and national art fairs and art galleries.
