I N TO GREAT S I LEN C E : MO N AST E RY PROJECT SUMMARY Location : Columbus, Indiana, U.S Area : 26,500 sf Structure : Reinforced Concrete Porject year : 2012

PROJECT DESCRIPTION “The house is an instrument with which to confront the cosmos”

- Juhani Pallasmaa

T

his project is to design a Roman Catholic Cistercian (Trappist) Monastery for 12 monks, an Abbott, and 120 visitors. It is incredibly strong programmatic nature, and it’s inward focus by keeping with the spirit of the material, and using our newly honed intuitions regarding light and contemplation. In order to design, students need to investigate and research in a manner, because the monastic ideal represents one of humanity’s truly imposing designs for living.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

I

n Evidence Based on Design, E.B.D, there are many ways to design a medical center for not only patients, but also staff, such as making a home-like environment, ease of way finding, getting even natural light into the building, and biophilic design.

I

n my design, in order to accomplish E.B.D, the main concept of the new patient building focuses on communication with users, communication with its neighborhood, and communication with nature.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION “There is no cognition without emotion, even though we are often unaware of the emotional aspects of our thinking.”

- Mark Johnson

T

he Lincoln Park Rowing Club has grown beyond the capacity of their current facility and is looking to expand. It needs to offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities year round, including learn to row sessions both in tanks and on the river, youth and masters team rowing, ergometer training, rowing-inspired yoga classes, and lessons tailored to individuals with disabilities.

B

y providing a publically accessible riverfront, it also reveals the larger movement toward an ecological and recreational revival of the Chicago River.

collector of contemporary art needs a facility to exhibit and store the collection. Occasionally the owner will use the facility to entertain guests that may number only a handful to as many as 30 persons at other times.
