George Horne Russell (Canadian,1861-1933) was born in Banff, Scotland and studied at the Aberdeen School of Art and the South Kensington School of Art. A trained and talented portraitist, Rusell moved to Montreal in 1889 to establish an art practice. He worked as a portrait painter in Canada in the late 1800s, expanding his repertoire to include landscape in the early 1900s. He executed a number of large scale landscape paintings of the Rockies and British Columbia at the request of Canadian railway companies.
Russell was a personal acquaintance of the Canadian railway magnate William Van Horne. Van Horne vacationed annually at St. Andrews, NB. It is possibly through this connection that Russell came to locate a summer home and studio in the province. Russell died in 1933 in St. Stephen, NB.
Russell became president of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1922. His work is found in the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Gallery of Canada.

This painting has been authenticated by Ian Muncaster, Zwicker’s Gallery, Halifax NS. Letter of authenticity is included with the lot. A pigment analysis has been conducted with the Research and Productivity Council, Fredericton NB, confirming the appropriate composition of the paint. This work has been professionally framed by Janet Chang, Framing Factory, Saint John NB, with Italian birch and UV glass.
This scene is a recurrent theme in the artist’s work. There is clarity and cohesion to the component parts of this painting: the horse tethered to a post in the centre of the composition has been unhitched from the black carriage on the right and awaits the work of the blacksmith in the upper right. Fields of green grass and white flowers and a leafy tree frame these components and draw our eye back to the centre of the composition.
This painting is one of the largest of Lewis’ works to appear at auction in recent years.
