ESTIMATE $500 - $600

The Deyrolle company was founded in 1831 by French naturalist JeanBaptiste Deyrolle. The Deyrolle shop was first located at 23 rue de la Monnaie, Paris, France, later moving to 46 rue du Bac in 1888. The shop was, and is still, known as a cabinet of natural curiosities, providing a wide range taxidermied animal species, insect and shell collections, and natural science teaching resources.
Jean-Baptiste’s grandson, Émile, assumed ownership of Deyrolle in 1866. In the early 1870s, Émile created a series of pedagogical wall charts, published under the name, ”Musée scolaire Deyrolle.” These illustrated charts, which covered a range of natural subjects including zoology, entomology, and botany, were intended for classroom usage. This proved to be an enormously successful venture for Deyrolle, with the French State becoming its main client, distributing charts throughout the public educational system during the 1870s.

Alain Manesson Mallet (1630–1706) was a 17th century French cartographer and engineer. In his early career, he served as a soldier and Inspector of Fortifications in the army of Louis XIV. He also served King Alfonso VI of Portugal during the Portuguese Restoration War. He returned to France at the conclusion of that conflict in 1668 to assume a position teaching mathematics in the court of Louis XIV. Mallet published two important works in the 1680s: Description de L’Univers (1683) and Les Travaux de Mars ou l’Art de la Guerre (1684), which included maps of the ancient and then-known world, star charts, and notes on religion and local customs.

Jacques-Nicholas Bellin (1703-1772) was an important French cartographer of the 18th century, known particularly for his maps of the Canada and the French territories in North America. He had a long and prolific career, beginning in 1721 when he was appointed hydrographer to the French Navy; he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Dépot des cartes et plans de la Marine and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. Bellin was one of the Encyclopédistes, contributors to Diderot’s Encyclopédie, and part of a group of Enlightenment intellectuals and thinkers called the philosophes. He died in 1772 at Versailles.

Curtis Jeré was the shared pseudonym of the design company’s two founders, American artists Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels. The brothersin-law began collaborating in 1963. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Curtis Jeré created statement metalwork design pieces, ranging from the representational (as we see here) to the abstract.
This is a striking example of Curtis Jeré wall sculpture. The metal forms repeat in intricate geometric patterns of squares and triangles. Freiler and Fels use a traditional nautical form to experiment with mid-century design concepts and interior aesthetics.
