pace This year, our yearbook’s theme is supported with the name, PACE. As cadets age throughout the program, they face struggles that may seem overbearing. However, having made it through another successful year, cadets may come to realize the effectiveness of the lessons they have taught themselves. Cadets can carry these lessons into their next year, no matter if the cadet continues in the program or not. The theme PACE is meant to exemplify each cadet’s journey throughout the cadet year by pacing back towards some of this year’s occurrences. PACE also acts as a reminder regarding the importance of a team to be mentally and physically in sync in order to become successful as a member of any team.

ssage CO’s Me My first year being a Commanding Officer was a roller coaster of successes and challenges, but it has definitely been a great learning experience thus far that I will be carrying forward into my next two years. One of the most important lessons I learned as CO this year was that I am not doing this job alone, nor should I approaching it with that mindset. I have the great fortune of being surrounded by critical and creative thinkers, as well as dedicated and determined doers, and I owe that to our previous Commanding Officer, Major Brian Wong, for having guided the development of the squadron to where it is today.

From the officer staff to the Squadron Sponsoring Committee and parent volunteers to all of the cadets, we put together a very successful training year. The moments that stand out most in our memories though are when we came together as a cohesive unit: whether we were out on a field training exercise, on the court, on the parade square, or in a meeting, we worked with each other for each other. The camaraderie our squadron shares is one of our greatest strengths as a unit, and should be cherished.

I would like to especially thank all of our officers and volunteers for having been committed beyond question throughout everything this past training year. Each and every one of you chose to make this squadron, its staff, and its cadets a priority in your lives when you very easily could have chosen not to. I recognize the immeasurable time and effort you all devote to making this program what it is for our cadets, and I appreciate you more than I am able to put into words.

I wish all of you a safe and enjoyable summer, whether you are staying in town or travelling the world. To our cadets attending summer camp, I hope you make the effort to connect with people you have not met before because some of them may end up being great, lifelong friends. To our senior cadets staffing summer camp, keep in mind that you will be working with others who may not share your perspective - try to see their point of view just as much as you are asking them to see yours. To our adult staff and parent volunteers, enjoy the break from our cadets! I hope to see all of you back in September with fresh ideas and perspective, recharged and ready for a new training year.

Chief’s e Messag Years ago, as a junior cadet of 759, our squadron was much different than what it is today. Our squadron has made a lot of transformations and we’ve all had to adapt to a little change here and there. For junior cadets reading this, there will always be change. The time has come for me to age out, as some do in the cadet program; and as my final address to you all I will try and add some lessons I have learned. Change is inevitable; you will all experience different ways of doing things, and different things changing. The cadet program is an outlook into adult life, experiencing responsibility during youth. Responsibility is a necessity in adult life and simply not something you can enter the adult world in saying “I’ve seen a little on tv”. The true test of determination is if you can adapt and overcome to change; to use what you see as a disadvantage, instead to an advantage. Many find this impossible, successful people find this an amusing challenge. Responsibility, determination, and actual work equate to excellence and success; excellence is a habit, not an act. With change comes opportunity. In this program, as in life, opportunities don’t just happen, you create them. In life there is no such thing as a “target-rich environment”, where opportunity roams free with minimal work. Many people set goals with steps, I just find something I want to achieve and start working.

Anyone willing to put in actual hours of work, is destined for success, regardless of the method they choose to create that path. We tend to shift our achievements into dreams but we all must remember that “when you chase a dream, sometimes you do not realize what is right in front of you” (Nursultan Tulyakbay). Mission first, people always.

I would like to thank my friends. I have made the closest friends of my life through the cadet program, friendships I can see lasting a lifetime. For many of my friends we have gone through common struggles and celebrated our successes. To everyone I have met in the cadet program, I would like to say thank you. The more people you meet in this program you begin to realize that we are all more alike than different. Every story and shred of experience you hear from someone else, is an advantage and lesson for you to use for your ventures and goals. You learn one of two things from the people you meet. What to do, and what not to do. Stupid is as stupid does. Whatever you do in this program; start strong, never doubt your ability, finish your task past the last second. Be the best in everything you attempt, and remember there are no points for second place. All of us have the tools and lessons to succeed as leaders, but the one thing that makes or breaks anyone is experience. All the success, responsibility, and determination are all connected through experience. It has been a long seven years in this program, I’d simply like to say, goodbye to the load of dedicated officers and cadets I have worked with over the years.

essage SSC’s M A year ago, I was just one of the volunteers at 759. Now I am writing this message as acting Chair, which I take immense pride and honour in being.

During the 2018 annual band competition, I met a parent who was ensuring that the cadets were at their best before entering the arena to perform. I asked her who her child was and she told me her son had already completed his service at the squadron. Through the six years her son spent at 759, she watched cadets join as kids and leave as young adults. She felt like the squadron was a part of her family. This past year, nearly fifty new cadets joined 759. The cadets competed in sports, biathlon, drill, band, and first aid competitions.

They also participated in field training exercises, the Winter Potluck, gliding days, CO’s Parades, ACR, and a number of other events. Lastly, cadets attended Mess Dinner to celebrate the hard work they put in during the training year. Without the combined efforts of parents, volunteers, officers, and SSC members, none of these activities would have occurred.

Our major funding comes from the BC Gaming Fund and longtime supporters from the Legion Branch 148 represented by Mr. Anthony Terhaar. I would also like to mention a good friend of the squadron, former MLA Richard Lee, for proposing the idea for us to receive funding from Government sources. Thank you all for your aid and contributions.

Finally, I would like to thank Captain Tan and all the officers for leading 759 Falcon through another successful year. The SSC members are looking forward to working with you again as a team and as one big family. To the cadets, have a safe and wonderful summer. Your parents and I are proud of you.

“The essence of The Royal Canadian Legion is to serve veterans and their dependents, to promote Remembrance and to act in the service of Canada and its communities.” Beyond this, the Royal Canadian Legion has provided additional support to our squadron. In fact, many of our squadron activities would not have been a reality if it was not for the gracious support of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 148. Every member of cadet community from cadets to parents to officers would like to express our greatest gratitude for your continuous support. Your funding has not only allowed for enhanced training of the cadets through extracurricular events but strengthened their cadet experiences. Thank you so much for your help in making 759 Falcon as successful of a squadron as it is today, we could not have done it without you!

This training year was a wild adventure for me as a first year level 5 cadet at 759. Starting this year as a Sgt, I was given the position of Boston F/Comm with Sgt Won as the F/Sgt. Together, we learned a lot about managing a flight with many dynamic people. However, shortly after, we learned that our flight was being disbanded due to the startup of Apollo flight. We were both disappointed but what choice did we have? Eventually, I moved into the Arrow F/Sgt position which was where my time at Arrow flight began.

It was definitely hard to transition to a new team of cadets, but I slowly began to recognize the faces of the flight. Shortly after, FSgt Heussner earned the squadron adjutant position, allowing me to move up to the F/Comm position where my time at Arrow flight really began.

as Arrow F/Sgt, and together, we learned how to work with the flight NCOs and cadets once again. For my short time in Arrow flight, I want to say I’m proud of each and everyone of you, even if my interaction with you was short. I want to give a huge thank you to FSgt Li and FSgt Won, because Arrow flight wouldn’t be the same without your time, effort, and thoughtfulness, and I really appreciate all that you’ve have done.

I want to leave a short remark to all of you regardless of what you decide to do in the next training year.

In everything you do, take it with a grain of salt. Think about why, who, and what you’re doing it for. Figure out what you want or what you enjoy the most, put your 110% into it, and don’t put 50% into things you don’t really care about.

This past training year has been a non-stop journey for Hawk Flight. We started off as one of the smallest flights in the squadron to one of the largest. Although we are mostly comprised of junior cadets, I can confidently say that you are going to be the future of this squadron. Find a group of people that you can rely on, work well with and keep them by your side. We were all once in your place, and I cannot stress how important it is to find a passion within the squadron. Even if you do not enjoy the program but you show up to Wednesday training nights, make the most out of it while you are there. Make the best out of every opportunity that you get because it is not about the result but how you improve from your mistakes. Use this program to not only improve yourself but the

It is with great pleasure to have the opportunity to lead this group of young, talented, and aspiring individuals. I am pleased to see each cadet’s progress since the beginning of the training year, with your enthusiasm and exemplary work ethic fuelling this flight to success. To my junior cadets, the seniors and I were all once in your place, do not be afraid to look around and discover new possibilities the world has to offer. I understand that the cadet program might not seem important enough to impact your life and that your first few years will be hard to comprehend. We all have to start somewhere however, remember that you are still growing and have a lot to learn later on. So as you stick by a little longer, I hope you will come to realize that you are not here just to march

around and work on uniform, but to also progress into becoming a great leader. Congratulations on finishing your first couple of years, now the interesting part begins and I cannot tell you what to expect until you have experienced them yourselves. To my senior cadets, your willingness to learn from setbacks is admirable. Your passion to grow and develop as a leader is smooth and gracious.

Thank you for the tremendous amount of hard work you put into this flight. As far as I can tell, I may not need to worry about the flight as long as it is under your leadership.

It has been an unbelievable experience being your Flight Commander this year and I am so proud of what you have all accomplished during this training year. It started off with many of you swapping flights in the beginning of the year. Despite having our ups and downs on Wednesday nights, we made tremendous progress throughout the year by not only succeeding in improving ourselves, but on becoming a family. After several years, 759 Falcon RCACS now has an official band flight. I am extremely proud of all the progress and growth of this this flight over the 2017-18 training year.

We may have had a rocky start, but the hard work from everyone has made each Wednesday training night worthwhile. From the boring weekend practices to regular band practices, not only have I seen the development of each individual in drill, but also as musicians. For those of you who didn’t know the first thing about music, I hope this was an educational year for you and urge you all to improve yourselves.

To my NCOs, thank you for your dedication, and taking initiative whenever you see fit. Apollo flight would not be what it is without you all. As this training year comes to an end, let me be the first to

say that this flight has undergone a massive transformation: from individuals filled with potential to a full-functioning, well-oiled machine. Once again, I am immensely proud of each of you.

Composed of five outstanding cadets, the 759 Falcon Squadron flag party is a small squad representing the ceremonial colours on parade. Flag party consists of one Canadian flag bearer, one squadron banner flag bearer, two guards carrying Lee Enfield rifles, and an escort. This group of promising and disciplined young individuals meet up every Friday evenings from 1730-1830 at Burnaby North Secondary to work on improving each other, the squadron and more importantly, themselves. The weekly practice consists of rehearsing the parade sequence, individual drill, and flag and rifle drill. As a small part of the squadron, the flag party always marches together with content, never failed to set the ultimate standard for the squadron in terms of drill, dress, and deportment.

For every cadet there comes a time when they will need to step up and embrace the responsibility of becoming a senior cadet. Oftentimes, being identified as a senior NCO means taking more initiative within the squadron objectives. For every squadron activity, there is always a senior level cadet ready to fill in a leadership role for the younger cadets. These NCOs lead exercises to help develop the future leaders of the squadron all while having fun. In addition, senior cadets coordinate with the officers to ensure success in whatever activities are progressing. Without the motivation and initiative of the senior cadets the squadron would not be as vibrant as it is. Ultimately the NCOs of 759 play a key role in shaping the squadron.

s Age Out When a cadet reaches the age of 19, it not only signifies their transition to adulthood, but also their age-out from the cadet program. An ageout is an important milestone in a cadet’s career as it marks the end of a long journey in the program, filled with unbreakable friendships, unforgettable experiences, and everlasting memories. The exceptional quality of 759 cadets would not be possible without the help of the officers of 759 Falcon Squadron. The officers from our squadron keep the program running by executing tasks which range from administrative duties to providing safety and supervision for cadet exercises. Furthermore, all this additional time is taken from their own daily lives and thus is a sacrifice that often goes unnoticed. Altogether the achievements of the squadron stem from the immense hard work and dedication of the officers.

SSC

The Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) is an essential part of 759 Falcon Squadron. Cadets have classrooms to learn in and gyms to parade in, thanks to the SSC. Not only does the SSC maintain the squadron finances, they also manage external relations, ensuring we have proper resources for squadron activities. Squadron tagging is one of many responsibilities that the SSC diligently organizes. In order to tag, the SSC speaks with various businesses to secure tagging locations and a source of transportation for cadets. As a result, the SSC plays an important role in allowing the squadron to train its cadets.

Every Wednesday training night, from 1900h to 2050h, cadets are taught lessons by senior NCO instructors. The cadets are organized into proficiency levels where they learn the mandatory material in order to advance to the next level. In levels one and two, cadets learn and develop their knowledge of aviation, drill, citizenship and general cadet knowledge. Level threes and fours will begin to receive lessons on instructional techniques, parade order, and advanced aviation topics. During the year, their knowledge of these topics are evaluated through Performance Checks (PC’s) to ensure that they are prepared to become senior NCOs and instructors.

Level One Level ones, I know that the cadet program does not treat you lightly and I understand if you feel this will persist. However, I want you to know that life is built on hardship and learning; as you stay in the cadet program, I hope you will come to realize that it is useful for the realworld.

Congratulations on completing your level one training year! I am proud to be your level head, and to have had you as my cadets. To my instructors, thank you for your time and effort displayed to me every week. I am very grateful to have worked with such intelligent, creative, and responsible instructors. I wish everyone the best in future endeavours!

Level Two Congratulations level twos on yet another successful training year. I am so proud of every single one of you. Just know that this program is meant to find your weakness and it will break you sometimes, but if you can find a way to improve, you will always succeed. I hope that you were all able to learn something from your incredible instructors that will motivate you to continue in the program. A special thank you to the instructors for providing continuous support to the level twos. Keep striving to improve yourselves and the people around you. Level three In level three, the program introduces leadership opportunities for the cadets’ preparation into senior NCOs. Though some may not realize it, it is vital they build a strong foundation of self-confidence and esprit de corps for them to succeed as our squadron’s future leaders.

Knowing they would one day be commanding our squadron, I made sure all of them were not lacking in training and more importantly, they felt like one cohesive unit. At this point, I know there is always room for development, but I want you all to know I have seen you grow and I am proud of you!

Level Four I have had the pleasure of watching all of you grow; what has once been known as the rowdiest group of preteens have transformed into young adults filled with potential.

You guys never cease to impress me with your persevering attitudes and leadership capabilities. I have enjoyed every moment of instructing you, watching you make decisions for yourselves instead of waiting for instructions. However, with all these wonderful changes, remember that there is always room for improvement. As Vince Lombardi once said, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”

CO’s Parades occur once every three months on the first Wednesday of said month.

Here, awards and promotions are both presented and made.

Cadets are also inspected by the Commanding Officer. During regular training nights, cadets participate in an opening and closing parade, where they display their drill, dress, and deportment.

Cadets are carefully inspected by senior NCOs during opening parade.

Announcements are reiterated or made during closing parade and may consist of awards and presentations. The band and flag party are also always present and thus, they must demonstrate their musical and drill expertise to the whole squadron.

Sports Nights Sports nights promote physical fitness, one of the three aims of the cadet program. Cadets arrive wearing athletic gear and partake in various activities, often the Cadet Fitness Assessment, otherwise known as the CFAs, the Cadet Fitness Assessments provides opportunities for cadets to demonstrate their proficiency and improvements in their fitness.

On sports nights where the CFAs are not conducted, cadets compete between flights in friendly games of sports such as basketball, dodgeball, or ultimate; providing the cadets a night of fitness and fun.

squadron based settings. Above attending regular Wednesday training nights, the squadron band practices on Mondays, where cadets develop their skills as a musician both with their instrument sections and as well with the rest of the band as an ensemble. In addition, the band also conducts occasional band practices during weekends, to sync their drill and playing abilities. Each spring, the band also competes at the lower mainland regional band competition, performing a 10-15 minute routine showing off their skills as military musicians. This year, the band was also given the opportunity to invite Warrant Officer 1st Class Isaac Leung from 513 Hornet Squadron in New Westminster to compete with our band as their squadron band had too few cadets and did not qualify to compete. The band maintained a gold standard performance in the Military A category, placing fourth at the Minoru Arena in Richmond this year, and is expected to compete in the Military A category again next year.

Combining the aim of physical fitness and the discipline of marksmanship, the Cadet Biathlon is both a challenging and fun experience. In preparation for the tremendous strength, stamina and precision that this event entails, the squadron’s biathlon team undergoes rigorous training beforehand. This includes weekly fitness, ski and marksmanship practices at the hut, Cypress Mountain and Port Coquitlam & District Hunting & Fishing Club respectively. With many skilled cadets, 759 routinely sends biathletes to the Regional Zone competitions, where their success can earn them a spot in the Provincial or even National Competition in Prince Edward Island. The Drill Team is a team made up of 15 determined, committed, and confident cadets. Under the guidance of the Drill Team Commander and the NCOIC, the team has established and showed the highest standards of drill, dress, and deportment in the squadron. Throughout the year, the team has spent their Friday nights at Burnaby North Secondary practicing, preparing, and perfecting their routine. All their hard work and efforts are put into their performance at the Vancouver Coastal Drill Team Competition. The first portion of a

routine is the compulsory routine, all the squadrons competing have the exact same compulsory routine, it is a series of commands called in a specific order by the Drill Team Commander. The last portion of the routine is the precision routine, it is a choreographed routine fully memorized by the cadets, there are no commands given to the team by the Drill Team Commander. The drill routine in its entirety displays the amount of skill, teamwork, dedication, and perseverance the team has gained and given throughout the year. The goal of a drill team is to not only develop the cadets’ individual drill but to develop their teamwork and a sense of being a part of a family. Although the team has had a few problems along the way, they have definitely pulled through and showed their hard work and efforts by placing second at the Vancouver Coastal Drill Team Competition!

Managing chaotic situations and saving lives are two fundamental aspects of first aid. In the 759 first aid team, every member is trained to be the best first responder they can be. This means weekly first aid practices revolving around gaining knowledge of treatment, applying life saving techniques, and developing strong leadership qualities to be able to take charge in an emergency. Furthermore, annual first aid competition is held to truly put the skills of the emerging first aiders to the test.

The competition is comprised of multiple scenarios designed to put first aid teams under pressure and simulate real life situations.

Nevertheless, the 759 team never fails to succeed in their objectives and ultimately gets the job done.

Junior Ground School is an extracurricular activity designed for junior cadets interested in the field of aviation. It allows young, eager cadets to deepen their understanding of aviation by being exposed to the scientific, technical, and aeronautical aspects of flight.

Commencing after Spring Break standdown and continuing to the end of the training year, Junior Ground School meets every Thursday from 1830h to 2100h at the Civil Defense Building. Here, cadets learn about basic aviation subjects such as theory of flight, navigation, and meteorology, all of which is taught by highly qualified, and experienced officers. These fundamental topics provide a basis for other, more complicated subjects, making Junior Ground School an important steppingstone for cadets wanting to join Senior Ground School and apply for National Scholarship Training Courses.

A strenuous and fast-paced activity, Senior Ground School is certainly not for the lighthearted. Beginning immediately at the start of the training year, members are taught a rigorous curriculum in preparation for the Glider and Power Pilot Scholarship exams, and subsequent National Scholarship Training Course reviews boards occurring in January and February. Senior Ground School members learn more advanced topics compared to Junior Ground School, such as airmanship and aeronautical rules and facilities, while also building upon fundamental concepts like theory of flight and meteorology.

Moreover, a resume and cover letter workshop is held and a mock review board is conducted to prepare cadets applying for Scholarship courses. This training year, 759 is sending three cadets to the Glider Pilot Scholarship, one to the Power Pilot Scholarship, and two to other National Scholarship

From basketball to dodgeball to volleyball, cadet multi-squadron sports tournaments provide opportunities for cadets to show off their skill as a team as they face off against other squadrons.

This year, 759 sent teams to Operation Ballistic dodgeball, hosted by 655, Steveston Classic basketball, hosted by 609, and the 111 Volleyball tournament hosted by 111, finding success in the dodgeball, and volleyball tournament.

Every year, the squadron rounds up enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to come together and produce a memoir of all the events and achievements for the training year. Composed of 19 cadets, this year's yearbook marks the squadron's sixth annual yearbook, and the first one to be supported by a title, PACE, complementing this year's theme. Together, the yearbook team sets out to make a one-of-a-kind yearbook, while also pushing the quality of content we release to the squadron to top the previous year. Yearbook members devote countless hours attend events to photograph pictures, design spreads, and write content descriptions. Through lessons taught by the team's seniors and the creation of this yearbook, cadets improve their photography, graphic design, and editing skills.

Every training year creates new memories and experiences for cadets, the yearbook ensures that they are sustained.

Every year on November 11, we honour the fallen soldiers who have sacrificed themselves in order to serve Canada in battles such as World War I. The Remembrance Day Parade, one of the largest parades the squadron participates in, is held at Confederation Park. Canadians wear a poppy to symbolize respect and to act as a tribute to those who have fought. The squadron contributes to the parade by marching the streets with the flags as well as playing and providing a band. Despite not always having favourable weather, the cadets attend to show their appreciation.

At the end of every year, on the Wednesday before winter break, all cadets gather for a lively potluck. Being an annual tradition at 759 Falcon, friends and families of cadets join to celebrate another successful year as a squadron. A relaxed and joyous evening awaits for the attendees as the night consists of lots of food, fun games, and prize draws. This training year, 759 continued a semi-formal theme while also inviting cadets to wear festive attire. A very special performance was held by past chairman, Mr. Tang. While singing YMCA, he livened the atmosphere and brought everyone together as they sang along. Being one of the most interactive cadet events, it is highly anticipated.

In air cadets, aviation is the name of the game. By becoming an air cadet an individual gains many opportunities to explore various branches of aviation. One of theses opportunities is gliding, each year the squadron organizes various gliding days to give cadets the chance to participate in an exclusive air cadet activity.

Furthermore, this year the squadron was able to organize a visit to Vancouver International Airport. With such an amazing opportunity, the cadets attending gained wonderful insights in the realm of flight and airport operations. Altogether, the air cadet program is highlighted by the opportunities unique to the program.

Into Th Stormy weather, cozy fires, and extreme fun combined with the exquisite delicacy of black beans, MREs create the typical 759 field training exercise. Every year the cadets go on survival training exercises to hone their skills in wilderness survival. With training environments in the rain, snow, and the occasional sunshine, cadets gain a well rounded skill set to ensure safety and have fun in the wilderness. The FTXs are organized and supervised by senior cadets and officers, and it is thanks to them that cadets come home smiling and in one piece.

Falcon Punch is a fun, interactive activity with the squadron. It brings cadets closer together as they bond and enjoy the planned lively event. This year, 759 has prepared a day at the Richmond Olympic Experience. Held at the Richmond Olympic Oval, participating cadets developed and improved their skills through tiresome yet thrilling rock climbing. In addition to rock climbing, cadets were able to experience sports in their state of the art sports simulator.

There’s nothing like the spark of competition to get the cadets’ spirits all fired up. Every year, the 759 Falcon squadron has sent teams to various competitions across the lower mainland to compete against other squadrons. With that being said, making it onto the teams may not always be easy, cadets undergo a selection process so that the most diligent cadets can be chosen. Regardless of the results at the competition, the squadron will always be proud of the results achieved by their teams.

er Commemorating the end of a successful training year, the mess dinner celebrates the squadron’s hard work. Unlike most cadet events, mess dinner offers a more relaxed atmosphere, a night filled with food, friendly conversations, and fun. After the reception of the officers to their seats, the cadets are seated and the food is served.

Here, the primary master of ceremonies usually takes over— cracking jokes and delivering banter towards or between cadets.

Finally, awards, such as national scholarship offers, are presented to the cadets, closing the evening.

The 2017 Annual Ceremonial Review held on May 28, marked the squadron’s 52nd annual parade. At this parade, cadets demonstrated the hard work they have put into their training year. This special event not only symbolizes the end of the year, but it also displays the success. The band and drill team show off their dynamic display they have previously spent multiple hours polishing up. The ceremony also acknowledges the individual cadets who have done exceptionally well and

have proved their determination through awards. Nearing the end of the parade, cadets and guests also have the opportunity to view the static display boards that NCOs have created on behalf of teams and activities that have occured throughout the training year. Most excitingly, the cadets also have the incentive to put on their best parade yet, as their visible success during this parade also determines the number of spots for summer training camp opportunities the following year.
