SANTA ANA HOUSING

A reintroduction to a typology

The typology of Latino America is familiar to the city of Santa Ana given the cities overwhelming Latino population. By introducing arches into the project, a move widely used in Spanish architecture, the community is able to make a visual connection deriving from memory. The decision to have the units facing one another creates a central courtyard- a typology reminiscent of the vecindades found throughout Latino America. The use of color on the facades is another nod to the colorful buildings that adorn the built environment of the countries south of the border.

RETHINKING THE 10

Re-imagining the freeway into a place for community engagement and low carbon transportation

Re-envisioning the stretch of i-10 freeway from El Monte Station to Downtown Los Angeles. 3 light rail cars, several bike lanes, and a generously shaded walking path are all implemented into the project with the vision of a less car centric future.

BRICKWORK

A reclaiming of space for the black community in Portland, Oregon

The project looks to use graffiti and design motifs found in the historically black community of Albina in order to reclaim and redesign the space to serve the original community. The graffiti aesthetic is used to design ground work and the outline of word “Hillblock” is used as a tribute to the historical neighborhood and to create a skyline through the outline of its letters. Graffiti is a way to claim personal space in a public realm. It is an artistic declaration of existence. The project is reclaiming this part of Albina and using “Hillblock” as its tag.

Working with Chilean architect Max Núñez, we re-imagine the possibilities of designing within the context of a historic landmark

By directly mimicking its surroundings, the mirrored skylights pay respect to the site in the utmost manner; they become it. The house and the neighborhood are both reflected back at the viewer. Inside the skylights, a mirrored surface refracts light back into the garden house. The play of light imitates the light show that occurs when water reflects off the penthouse pool onto its interior ceiling, creating a sense of connection between the interior of the Garden House and the Penthouse of the VDL.

CPP SCHOOL OF ARCHITCTURE

An antithesis to a historical landmark.

The inner workings of this new monument are on full display through a perforated metal envelope, a fully glazed northern facade, and apertures placed strategically on both plinth and tower.

These apertures are moments within the architecture where the public is invited to look into the school, the exhibition on an architecture school at work.

LITTLE TOKYO MUSEUM

A connection of space and community The site is cut diagonally to make way for a generous walkway that connects 1st street to the back of the site which, in turn, connects to the heart of Little Tokyo. The walkway is flanked on both sides by public spaces, giving the ground back to the community. This upwards extrusion splits the museum in two and calls for the connection of these two buildings via bridges spanning from one side to the other.

Mt Wilson Scientist Retreat

Integration into site by means of geometry and materials

A live/work space for two observatory scientist up in the San Gabriel mountains The space was dictated by the site which was a lot longer than it was wide. These dimensions called for a plan which was rectangular and a circulation that was linear.

Both the geometry and material choices were a nod to the mountain range and the forest that surround the site. The plan was separated into areas that were Private, Shared, and Public.

In section the distinguishing of space is more clear, crowned by a top story observatory for star gazing.

THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS VASE COMES FROM THE ART OF FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS. VASE 01 IS THE PRE-ARRANGED VASE. TAKING CUES FROM THE BASICS OF FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS, THE STEMS OF FLOWERS ARE EXTRUDED AND USED AS CHANNELS TO PLACE FLOWERS WITHIN. THESE CHANNELS ARE EXTRUDED OUT AT DIFFERENT ANGELS AND VARYING HEIGHTS IN ORDER TO MIMIC THE DYNAMIC BOUQUETS THEY SIMULATE

Taking inspiration from laboratory equipment, this desk lamp comes with an adjustable arm height that allows for variety in illumination.

The translucent material of its upper half is ideal for entire room luminance while the opacity of its lower portion serves well for intimate settings.
