PACIFIC OCEAN
This studio explores architecture as open-ended, emergent, variable, ephemeral and pervasive. It considers two terms for architectural thinking: formation, and to a lesser degree, the word aggregate.
Formation can be thought of in several different but related ways. It can either be something in the process of becoming, something that already is, or an order or arrangement. This gets to the heart of the studio and its desired raison d’etre. In this studio, architecture is not fixed, there will likely be no finished building, only a series of more refined, more elaborate spatial studies. In formation, buildings are situated within a broader system of social, political, and environmental forces. Architecture is an agent that pushes and pulls on these systems and is shaped by them in turn
Project Brief
The Vagabond is a floating structure that travels around the Pacific Ocean, stopping in six cities that have become home to large Asian populations.
The Vagabond slowly traverses along the coast of the cities stopping during celebratory events in Asian culture allowing the city’s population to inhabit the structure until its eventual descent back into the ocean to travel to the next destination.
Acting as a travelling exhibition that has captured an archive of cultural and traditional practices, with a significant focus on the education of culinary practices and techniques.
The interior of the structure is an experiment on how spatial design can be created using non-traditional forms and how it would impact the space and its user, also how these experimental forms can give a space purpose and feel.
The exterior of the Vagabond is stacked with semi-translucent beams and poles, hiding the rich materiality of the structure’s interior creating a sense of discovery.
The Market contains a variety of stalls run by travelling merchants and automated food stalls. The structure features lavishing materials of gold and marble to create a sense of wealth and fortune, that is typically not associated with outdoor markets. The idea of using these rich materials is to create a sense of something special that should be celebrated and admired by the users and occupants.
The Bathhouse is designed using mathematical forms that are inspired by the idea and design of stacking steamers and bowls, overlapping these randomized circular forms to create flowing hot pools and reflective ceilings and vents.
The ceiling is cladded in copper following the rich materiality of the interior of the Vagabond. The copper ceiling creates a warping disillusion of space but creates a focus on the skylight that peers into the spaces above. The space is artificially lit with neon orange lights creating soothing but radical lighting.

RE-NATURE Rome : Non Architecture
2021
ROME, ITALY
RE-NATURE ROME is part of the "Cities of Tomorrow" competition series, developed to re-imagine urban life through a variety of creative design concepts and ideas. What kind of role can we play as designers in re-imaging urban life? How can we produce new inspiring visions to trigger a discussion around alternative models of living?
RE-NATURE ROME aims to answer those questions with a particular focus on biodiversity in urban areas.
Pegmata is a submission to the RE-NATURE ROME competition.
Pegmata is a series of framed wooden towers placed throughout Rome. Each structure contains a seed dispersion mechanism, using mobile balloons and a Brunelleschi inspired lift system to store and scatter seeds throughout the city. This encourages green spaces to flourish and increases biodiversity through precision seasonal seeding.
The towers reference the scaffolding of roman antiquity, complementing the classical skyline rather than disrupting it. They form a transparent addition that reflects the beauty of Rome rather than challenging it. Occupying a virtually non-existent footprint, the towers allow traffic to go throughout their bases, enabling them to be inserted in a variety of novel locations.
Each tower aims to become a transformable community centre, where residents operate and maintain the tower while benefiting from the views and space it provides. Over time, as each tower is adapted to their community, they take on the life and culture of their neighbourhoods, developing into markets, gardens, or any other space. As the structures age, they will quickly become homes to a variety of wildlife, hosting birds, insects, and plant life.
Pegmata is a zero-footprint, sustainable biodiversity program that brings together communities while acknowledging and participating in the identity of Rome
Foundation of Play
A Prototypical Urban Community
2021
OTTAWA, CANADA
The term’s project theme is A Prototypical Urban Community. A Prototypical Urban Community is a larger call for urban densification and intensification. It challenges you to explore ways of transforming the built environment and consider what it means to live in an urban neighbourhood in North America in the 21st century.
The Studio focuses on following the larger theme of Housing, Community City Building & Placemaking. The studio explores the development of multi-unit residential complexes on strategic sites in Ottawa.
Foundation of Play is a community housing project that creates an environment that encourages a safe place for youth to grow socially, mentally, and physically.
Centretown is a fast-growing inner-city neighbourhood in Ottawa, Canada. Foundation of Play creates opportunities for innovation, community, comfort, and a spirit of youthfulness to thrive.
The site’s designed on a threeby-three grid, which dictates the structures, pathways and playground. Small enough to create a sense of scale that builds ownership but large
enough to create a space for communities and collaboration. The scale created by this grid is a return to developments of the mid-twentieth century when mixed-use, mid-rise buildings were the norm and neighbourhoods like Centretown were bustling.
Foundation of Play is the start of a cycle that will continue to bring life to future generations through inspiration, community and play.
WATER FILTRATION PLANT & EXOTIC GREEN HOUSE
OTTAWA, CANADA
Adaptive Re-Use:
Southminster United Church Ottawa
This Studio is an introduction to designing a complex adaptive re-use project. The core issues for this project are to focus on a series of strategies concerning: program, building conservation, community engagement, including accessibility and equity, and environmental and building systems and envelope design.
Project Brief
This project is an adaptive re-use project that had an empathis on creating a space that blends the interior and exterior and creates a water filtration system for greywater.
The space filtrates the grey water of the surrounding area that is used for the vegitation, water features and buildings utilities. The overfill of the filtration is released into the canal.
The building contains a variety of technologies designed to clean, cultivate, and educate occupants. The structure features three distinct areas that slowly blend together the exterior and interior, combining nature, technology, and the built environment.
The three spaces on the site are the greenhouse, the water filtration room, and the outdoor terraces. The greenhouse features exotic, delicate plants with more common plant species featured in the main church body. The gardens use three planting techniques: hydroponics, soil grading, and an aeroponics drip system. The water filtration room can hold over 100,000 litres and another 16,000 litres of water in the recycling system. The outdoor terraces feature a mixture of green spaces and water features that allow users to traverse the steep site.
