2 January 14 A PRAYER (mezzo-soprano) For these bony old ash trees on Second Avenue, their tough branches with twisting starts and stops, elegant curves, sudden juts and turns, haphazard as my prayers in the night, yet lifted up in the tremulous confidence that you have made them beautiful, thank you, oh Spirit of God. April 4 INTERRUPTED MESSAGE (mezzo-soprano) The looping swoops of tar that patch the road I walk are a golden script with which the just-rising sun has scrawled a cheery note.

The blackbird tree performs its same old wheezy tune, like a circus calliope-but today in three-four time.

A soft breeze strolled in early this morning, picked up an old Des Moines Register from a curbside recycling bin and scattered good news all along Second Avenue.

Half a block away, a woodpecker stutters in Morse Corde trying to send out a message.

He bangs out an S-P-R but then, distracted by diving finches scooping up the air, flits off to taste and see what it was he meant to say.

January 14 MORNING NEWS (baritone) On the sidewalk in front of me four morning doves are singing-a barbershop quartet, the tenor stretching his neck to his the high notes and the bass a little flat.

I start to cross the street so as not to disturb their rehearsal but--too late-- they have seen me and hastily pick up their pitch pipe and music stand and whistle away.

I know the tune they were singing by heart, it soothed me all the early summer mornings of my growing up. Now, most mornings, I hear crows squawking the cruel, discordant news of the day: air strikes, suicide bombings, death counts.

January 21 CAVE DWELLERS (soprano)

MOTHER'S SONGS (tenor) * opt. SATB chorus, solo Sop.

School children at the corner in their brightly colored parkas do not wait when they wait for the bus.

They chase each other and flop on snow like fish on ice. They shout and crawl and tunnel into deep banks raised by the snow plow. When the school bus rounds the corner, they shriek toward the open door and just like that they’re gone.

I move on to the college where secretaries sit, demure and tidy, and gray-haired professors, having tunneled into their safe little caves, write down the wildest imaginings of their rebellious hearts.

Monday morning's music was the Maytag's throb and grind mellowed by my mother singing at the clothesline.

In my underwear I raced to her across the lawn.

Her quick fingers, three clothespins at a time in one hand, hung sheets that billowed like dreams in the wind.

HER GRIP (Mezzo-Soprano) This morning we pulled the beets For over a month now they had been preening their glossy green, red-veined leaves like peacocks at the zoo.

How slight their hold on earth--we tip them out of the soil as if they're tired of it and want to know what comes next.

Later this week I will make pickled beets using a recipe I learned from my mother, who died last summer at 93, so frail and wan at the end, but still clutching the earth so tightly it took all the strength old man pneumonia could muster to unclasp her hands.

In my mind I see her long before that.

Just thirteen, she gave the speech at eighth grade graduation.

But then, with stalk-stiff fingers that lusted after chalk and pencils, she wrenched ears of corn from sullen gray husks while November's wind howled and froze her tears.

A summer Saturday. I'm thirteen.

Tears in her eyes, my mother shocks me with her passionate reply when I ask why she always has the stupid opera on.

"It's my only window to look out of in this dusty little town."

She stabs her fingers at the dust cloth and wipes the hulking radio.

Her last summer. Pale legs stretched across the couch as her fingers worried the afghan and cancer terrified us all.

"Oh, my legs," she cried, "my legs.

They tingle so, like worms crawling."

I sat and rubbed her legs and asked if she would like to hear Lucia.

"Oh no. No record now. No music please," she said.

Slowly she fell asleep.

That day she weaned herself from all earth's songs.

The day before the funeral Mother's sister Clara sat down at the piano.

Her long piano fingers, stiff from arthritis, gradually thawed into melody.

We sang all the old songs.

A neighbor lady, come to pay respects, siad, "But how can you be singing?"

We sang on long after the clouds covered the moon. Snow billowed like dreams in the wind and the earth turned white.

The God of Material Things Songbook uses six excerpted songs from the eleven-movement The God of Material Things for narrator, soloists, chorus, and orchestra. Each song can stand either on its own or performed as part of a short song cycle for one or more voices. Each song is listed with its original voice type, but may be suitable for other voice ranges. If performed as a cycle for four singers, "Mother's Songs" includes a part originally sung by the chorus and soprano soloist.
