As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go to meet with God? My tears have been my food both day and night, while people say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.

Why are you downcast, O my soul?

Why so disturbed within me?

Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Note: As the Deer has two editions, one which includes only the ďŹ rst stanza of the psalm and its refrain "Put your hope in God..." and the other which sets the entirety of Psalm 42.

Performance Notes: As the Deer makes use of a Semi-Chorus (SATB), soloists (Soprano, Alto, and Baritone), soli sections of Sopranos and Altos, and sections marked a few Sopranos, Altos, or Tenors. The div. of the Main Chorus is left to the discretion of the conductor, since there are extended sections of 3-part div. between Soprano/Alto or Tenor/Bass.

, a group of Soprano and Alto soloists (4 - 8 singers) sing in multiple languages at an individual tempo (h. = ca. 60) Their entrances should be wthin 1 q of one another and they should avoid synchronization with one another.

The Soprano solo begins on cue where indicated in the score. , a smaller group of Soprano and Alto soloists (4 singers) complete the earlier hymn tune and text, but their entrances are more staggered, the second singer beginning when the first reaches the circled number and so on.

Their individual tempo is slower (h. = 40) but can be sung rubato.

As the Deer quotes GENEVAN 42, a hymntune composed by Loys "Louis" Bourgeois for Calvin's Genevan Psalter in 1551.

Various soloists sing verse 1 of the psalm in French, Dutch, and Hungarian (see below).

Note the use of the original and the more modern French from the 1587 and 1679 versions, respectively.
