Approximate dimensions: length = 6.25” (16 cm) 9.25” height = (23.5 cm) width =1.6” (4 cm) spans 11 white keys (C – F) or 7 black keys (Db = Eb) Hardcover, firm binding (to prevent accidental falls) Pencils – No. 2 “Ticonderoga,” approximately 6”, with erasers Performance Notes: 1. Accidentals apply to the entire measure 2.

Metronome markings are approximate and may be adjusted for performer comfort or acoustical properties 3.

Large rests, sections marked freely, and complicated effects do not need to be interpreted literally.

The actions during these sections were designed consecutively, as a series of events, and interpretative freedom and performer comfort are more important than exact interpretation.

4. All pitches, on keys and inside the piano are notated carefully (except in “Sticks”), but the composer is not considered with their exactness. Although not encouraged, accidental deviations or missed notes are understandable.

The aggressive portions of “The Dragon Awakens” should be played furious, regardless of note accuracy.

The motion of the hands, fingers, and fists, is more important to the total effect than the written notes.

Glissandi ranges are marked approximately, but the direction is fixed. They should be played rapidly and strummed within the frame. In “Jig” and “Clustered Hymn Tune,” the depressed chords/clusters (whether silent or with the sostenuto pedal) should be sounded a single glissando. In “Clustered Hymn Tune” the open 5th Eb and Bb should switch direction where indicated and emulate the bass line of a march.

The strummed rhythms in “Mandolin Sons” should follow the indicated rhythm, but should be played loosely with the back of the fingernails. The glissandi throughout “The Dragon Awakens” are very freely notated.

They should ebb and flow like breathing or snoring, and punctuated by rapid sfz markings that are played with the back of the fingernails.

Diamond-shaped notes should be depressed silently.

The symbols “o” and “+” are used to distinguish muted and unmated strings, whether by fingers (“Jig”) or an object (“Clustered Hymn Tune”) 8.

The pencils for “Mandolin Song” should lie on the strings, allowing them to bounce and rattle when the keys are struck.

They should cover the desired range but may shift during performance.

Brackets are used to designate tone clusters, whether created with the forearm (only in “The Dragon Awakens”) or the hymnbook, especially in “Clustered Hymn Tune”. Large noteheads are used for palms and all fingers used on the keys, as in “The Dragon Awakens.”

10. The percussive use of strings and pencils in “Sticks” should follow the directions on that page. In general, this piece does not specify pitches but gives directions that guide the performer toward the desired pattern or effect.

11. Pedaling should be followed precisely, but the use of ad lib pedal is advised in some portions 12. These studies are solo pieces, but an assistant may be useful for security, especially when dealing with shifting pencils or stationary hymnbook placement. Make sure that the assistant knows that music well enough to stay out of the way and still provide help when needed.

13. All other guidelines for preparation, movements, and effects can be found in the score.

14. No strings need to prepared in any way, but the performance would be aided by labeling the following strings: (the low Ab should be marked at the far end, for its use as a landmark string in “Sticks”)

The majority of the playing should take place on the furthest 1/3 of the lowest strings, but the patterns should be shifted toward the center of the strings at the "more aggressively section" and back to the far 1/3 at the "calmer" section The performer should stand with his/her back to the audience where he/she can reach the required strings easily
