Introduction

Shallot

Plastic Bottle Plenty of water that’s changed every 2-3 days

For this biology project, I propagated a shallot bulb using a vegetative propagation technique. Vegetative propagation is an asexual reproduction method where a new plant grows from a vegetative part of the parent plant rather than from a seed. I chose water inside a transparent container as my initial growing medium to closely observe root and shoot development, though soil can also be utilized.

Steps Of Plantation

1. Prepare the bulb: Peel the dry outer skin off a healthy shallot, keeping the flat bottom base plate fully intact. 2. Position + add water: Place the bulb over a container so only the bottom base plate touches the water. Do not submerge it. 3. Maintain growth: Place it in indirect sunlight and change the water completely every 1–2 days to prevent rot.

Example :

1 y Da

Documentation Da y 6

Has not grown roots since it’s day 1.

Day 1 0

Has started to grow roots

I do not know the reason why it hasn’t grown a green sprout but its roots has grown longer.

4 1 y a D Still hasn’t grown a green sprout but the roots have grown much more longer than day 10.

Growth Factors • Moisture: Water contact triggers the basal plate, breaking the bulb's dormancy to start rapid root growth. • Sunlight (Indirect): Light powers photosynthesis once shoots emerge, turning them green and feeding the plant. • Warmth: Ambient temperatures between 20°C and 28°C speed up cell division and shoot extension. • Stored Nutrients: The early sprouting phase relies entirely on food reserves packed inside the parent bulb scales.

Tips & Tricks

1. Water Sprouting Phase • Minimal Water: Keep only the bottom base touching water to prevent bulb rot. • Fresh Water: Change the water every 2 days to stop bacteria and supply oxygen. • Bright Light: Place in a warm spot with plenty of bright, indirect sunlight. 2. Potting • Loose Soil: Use wide pots with welldraining soil so roots do not suffocate. • Shallow Planting: Leave the top half of the bulb exposed above the dirt line. 3. Ongoing care • Smart Watering: Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. • Avoid Drafts: Keep away from freezing air conditioning vents and cold drafts.
