Health Issues Which May Result in Jaw Surgery Orthognathic surgery, or jaw surgery, may be used in conjunction with traditional orthodontic treatments to help fix corrective issues that cannot be mended with appliances alone. If jaw surgery is required, it will usually be done once growth has finished.

Patients experiencing pain from jaw problems such as temporomandibular joint disorder may be recommended for jaw surgery.

CORRECTING THE BITE Jaw surgery can be used to help correct bite fit and make biting and chewing easier. It can also help prevent the teeth from becoming excessively damaged or worn and fix jaw closure issues.

CORRECTING IMBALANCES AND DEFECTS Asymmetry such as overbites, underbites, cross bites and small chins can be corrected using jaw surgery. It can also help ensure the lips can close properly.

Orthognathic surgery can also help some patients with birth defects or be used to repair a facial injury.

SPEECH AND SLEEP APNOEA In some cases, jaw surgery maybe recommended as part of the treatment for sleep apnoea or to correct issues with speech or swallowing.
