JONATHAN WONG PORTFOLIO
INTRO My name is Jonathan Wong, I am a Product Designer and Photographer. As a product Designer, I like to do some designs related to society. Because the power of designer is changing the living style of society to turn it better. In my point of view, I believe good designs are not just consumer goods, but also a media sending positive messages to people. In developing design, prototyping and testing are good methods to bring good ideas. And I love to do so. As a photographer, I like to discover hided pictures around us. I learnt see things in different angles, this habit make me to know more things around, and my city. “Always keep curiosity and imagination.

C-BOARD
PUBLIC FACILITY FOR COMMUNITY Community, is a social unit in any size for representing a group of people having somethings in common, usually living areas and cultures. In the past history, the government tends to use universal modules in social develop for rapid social development. This system is both pros and cons. For new towns development, the present method is efficient and systematic, however, these community areas are similar and featureless. Nowadays, urban renewal replaces new towns development to be the main direction. This is the time for us to think how to improve the way of development.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES
INCREASING COMMUNICATION
MAKING GOOD USE OF WASTED SPACES
APPLYING ART & CRAFTS
The Public Area nowadays mostly attract elderly and children. For Teenagers and Adults, there are not much places for them. Therefore, I would like to provide a places can be suitable for different people needs.
In our community, There are some Wasted Space can be used in a better way, like empty schools, spaces under flyover, public housing areas, empty markets, etc. They may be a good place for connecting community after redefining their functions and putting them back to inhabitant’s life.
Local crafts is disappearing because of Social development. I try to conserve them by using them in some public facility design. Different to consumer products, these designs do not need to produce large amount.
WOOD WASTE UPCYCLING It was believed that the exceeding wastes in the community were still having remaining values to combine and reuse, then transferred to be some useful utilities served in the community back again. Therefore, the concept of upcycling was used.
Pallets are a tool for carrying large number of goods. Most of them are made by wood. They can be reused in a period but not made for long term used actually, therefore the wood used is cheap and soft. Under my observation and research, A large number of pallets are discards Every morning in ferry street.

SHARING SPACE WORKSHOPS Workshop is a design process that help designer to collect users experiences, comments from others. This data can be used in assessing design direction. Beside, workshops can also be used as co-design/co-develop platform. Obviously, designer can observe things professionally, however, the real users can consider things
with daily experiences. Interesting concept may be found in this process. In this project. I held workshops for exploring the possibility of facilities in space under flyover, I chose the location of Ferry Street at experimental site.
The workshops were held in weeks, In part one I focused on potential facility designs for sharing area under my design criteria. In the second part, We focused on how to made a bench with adjustable height.
This workshops successfully collected some ideas from other people, through brainstormed and discussed ideas. I knew the future design direction more clearly. In the capstone project, I should focus on one or two facilities that fit in my sharing space idea. Finally, I chose few of them which have the highest potential, and kept developing.

PALLET COLLECTING AND REFURBISHING For testing the wood handle method and preparing wood material for the final design. I went to fruit market in morning to collect pallets. Fruit market is located in Yau Ma Tei. As this is a wholesale market, packed fruits are transfer to here with pallets. A large number of pallets are disposed after unloading goods, Yau Ma Tei fruit market therefore is a place in urban with lots of wasted wood. Unlike new wood materials, Extra steps needed before using wood wastes. I handled these recycled pallets for further uses (Testing and design prototyping). I decided to cut wood pieces from pallets and to use thicknesser to polish wood surfaces and adjust the thickness or wood pieces to be similar. I chose this procedure because of high efficiency.
TESTING ON PALLET WOOD PIECES There is many methods to use wood pieces, like wood joint, wood combination, etc. For understanding suitable ways to use pallet wood pieces, some wood tests can help to know the characters of those woods and results of finishing of tests. These pallet wood pieces are comparatively soft, they are not good for adding details, The strength is low also, however, they can provide good surface finishing and strength in Jointed wood board.

SKETCHING OF POTENTIAL DESIGNS These sketches is some developments based on the outcomes of workshops. I tried to imagine the picture of whole sharing space. Basing on what may happen in the area, discover the elements needed for those specific activities, for example community cinema. I considered the potential of designs I focused before, and compared to characters of wood waste. I got a good result on combining wood. Therefore, a adjustable-height block is fit the method to handle wood waste. For this conclusion, I kept to develop this direction. In this stage I focused on the method to achieve the function and improving the form of wood board.

1:1 TESTING MODEL 1:1 Testing model is made with cardboards. A prototype on scaled can quickly help to find out problems from current design. Besides, the ergonomic test can be used as a judgment of dimension of design. After the test, I adjusted dimension of design to make it to be more user friendly and meet ergonomic criteria, which fit to most of people. Also, the ratio of flats in design is increased after collected comments.

EXPLORE CREATIVITY OF USERS The public areas in Hong Kong set up numerous rules to limit the creativity of the users to use different facilities. However, people can use C-BOARD in many ways which best satisfy their needs. With the high flexibility of C-BOARD, the open area could be used for various functions and events,
such as community cinema and concerts, fair markets or even study areas and public resting zone. C-BOARD, described as a multi-functioned facility but not simply classified as a chair or a table was cultivated from two phenomenon in Hong Kong.
FLEXIBLE DESIGN C-BOARD is designed with changeable legs. Each set of leg can be used as two different lengths, therefore a C-BOARD can be transformed to 4 modes. Users c adjust the height of C-BOARD easily for matching their needs and activities, for example community cinema, Flea market, workshop, concert, etc.

SMALL MOVEMENT ¡ UNIQUE GIZMO Insignificant habits are the significant part of daily life. You would unconscious release energy via natural reflexes during your idle moments. We are keen on revealing and recreating people’s interaction with little things in an amusing range of jewelery. In SMUG, a accessory collection with innovative design and market value is the objective. Brand building and market promotion also part of aims.
02 | SMUG CONCEPT
IDEAS In first stage development, we listed out insignificant habits and classified them by motions and feedbacks to users. For example, “ center gravity finding”, “ring rotation”, “button clicking”, etc. Then, we tried to adapt these elements to known accessories. In this process, exploration and analysis are the most important part in development. We concluded FUN and HIGH END are major design languages of this collection.
In developing process, 3D models is built for visualizing the outlook and researching users experiences. Part of designs was built with 3D printing. Beside the concept designs, Structure design for applying functions to accessory is also a important process. The usual mechanic structure is too complicated for a tiny design, also, they make assembly more difficult. A simple structure and similar click feeling became the development goals.

Play method Instruction
DESIGN After Researches, Numbers of parts of a usual button is too much for a accessory. Also, the parts size and Assembly are problems of design process. The final design is successfully fulfill the initial objectives. This collection is included two products, “button ring” and “button necklace” (named “MEETING” & “Boss”). Components of each design is limited to two to three. And the assembly is super easy . The design is considered the characters of metal and applied them to design.

RAPID PROTOTYPE Using 3D print technology, Some on-scale prototypes can be used as further testing and basic product shot. The first design prototypes are made by FDM. Their layer resolution is low, these prototypes can not achieve the button function really well however they can visualize the dimension on hands. This second prototypes are SLA 3D models. With higher resolution and accuracy, the function of designs is proved. Also, prototypes are plated or spray-painted to visualize metallic outlook and do promotions product.

WAVE Fashion Tailor-made Cervical Collar
FASHION MEDICAL “Who says the injured can’t be stylish and fashionable?” Though the patients need to put on a neck brace, which is usually considered ugly and clumsy, they do want to be well dressed. Hence, we provide an alternative which is a visually attractive, more breathable and lighter design.

3D SCANNING For the reason we are going to design a tailor-made medical rehabilitation aids, we have to scan the body shape of the model for the following develop processes like CAD building and Rendering. Two 3D scanning methods are used, they are Cyberware model 3030 and SKANECT. With those 3D data, some quick form ideas can be created with 3D softwares like Meshmixer. In final CAD model drawing, The 3D scan file can be used as a reference to make the product prefect fit to that user. On the whole, this is an effective way to build tailor-made cervical collars with 3D printing technology.

SKETCHING Under the basic functional requirements, I drew sketches for designing product forms with fashion feature. I tried to understand how forms interact with users. It is difficult to balance function and fashion. After consideration, layer structure and wire structure are appropriate elements of cervical collar design.
03 | WAVE
FINAL DESIGN After confirmed the final design, I built a 3D CAD file for rendering and 3D printing. This cervical collar design is formed by wire element. This structure can provide basic protection and fixation to neck, which is good for rehabilitation patients. The wire structure provide a visual lighter outlook to the design, it is possible to reduce the effect of daily life of patients.

04 | Branding Design
BRAND Brand is a image of people, companies, products, etc, which need identification to present their uniqueness. Usually, branding design is a combination of symbol, sign, theme color, logo and element designs. A good branding design is recognizably unique, good representation of objects’characters, and more important, brings benefits to the object.
04 | Branding Design
MOOD Mood exploration is a step for understanding the brand object. The process can classify the elements/ characters and distinguish their importance. In this case, The characters of the designer is shown by words and pictures. Pictures in mood board provide better readability than words. People can get known in a short times and have deeper impression.

The Final Logo Concept The Logo concept a combination of three objects, “WHY”, “?” and a bird.
LOGO DESIGN The logo is developed from my Chinese name, Wong Ho Yeung(黃浩揚 ). The first letters from three words are “W”, “H”, “Y” . They can become one word “WHY” if I combine them together. “WHY” has been one of my nickname from a long time. Also, “WHY” has the other meaning to me. I always asked questions for things around when I was young. I tried to know more the truth. May be this is one of reasons of being designer now because designers need curiosity. And “curiosity ” is also a character of my design spirit.
To use one symbol to represent spirit of “WHY”, I finally chose “?”, a question mark. As a designer, we have to keep the curiosity, that means keep asking questions to things surrounding. We have to note hided funny phenomenon for designing new outcome. And “?” also means unknown object. Just like our design process, no one can predict the design outcome, the result and message is under our imagination.
