In 2024, Paris will host the summer Olympic and Paralympic games.

Two of the venues, as well as the Olympic Village, are in the Commune of Saint-Denis, just a few kilometers north of Paris.

Surrounding the Olympic sites are diverse residential neighborhoods centered by an industrial zone of warehouses. This design redevelops the industrial area into an Olympic Park, with an emphasis on connecting Hautsde-Seine to Seine-Saint-Denis and a legacy plan for usage of the site after the Olympic games end.

The site for the park is located on an existing area with industrial warehouses, which disrupts a network of residential neighborhoods around it. By reclaiming this land for park space, it unites these neighborhoods to each other while providing open space. The master plan connects the departments of Seine Saint-Denis, the poorest department in France, with Hauts-de-Seine, one of the wealthiest.

The Olympic park also connects the planned Olympic Village with the planned aquatics centre and Stade de France.

The N14 highway runs North-South along the Seine on the west side of the site, creating a barrier unfit for pedestrians to access the water from the park. To resolve this, the park gradually slopes to create a tunnel over the highway, while also providing the height needed to create an amphitheater on the river bank. A pedestrian bridge also follows the main axis on the site with additional stepped seating incorporated into the design of the bridge.

This transforms the Seine into a venue, where Canoe racing can take place during the Olympics and floating concerts can happen afterwards.

On the other side of the pedestrian bridge, on L’Île Saint-Denis, is a site large enough for an indoor Olympic arena. To the south of the arena is a large parking lot and parking deck, just off of the A86 highway. This arena, in combination with Stade de France, the aquatics centre, the open space in the park, and the Seine River, the Olympic park is able to host a majority of the events at the Olympic games, entirely accessible by metro and walking distance to the Olympic Village.

The overall plan for the Olympic park connects Stade de France and aquatics centre on the east side of the site to a future indoor arena on the west side. The planned pedestrian bridge across the A1 highway creates an axis to use as a starting point for the network of axes on site. Two other catalysts are the center point of the site on L’Île Saint-Denis and the street grid of the residential neighborhood to the west of Stade de France. These construct the pedestrian routes through the park. Within the park are public playing fields, a bike path and gardens, a metro station, pedestrian bridges over the train tracks, and an amphitheater and pedestrian bridge on the Seine.

After the Olympic and Paralympic games end, the park still has plenty of uses. It is located in an area of low median household income. The addition of a large public space with activities and access to public transportation to an area of lower income creates a desirable public space that is used by the residents of that area, as well as drawing visitors from the adjacent higher income areas. This brings more revenue to the department of Seine SaintDenis and the businesses within that area, while uniting the communities.

Meshing this park into the existing urban fabric is a profitable investment for France because it will always have use. Nearby schools can use the sports fields for activities, the infill street grid south of the park can be developed into housing, including affordable housing, and the Seine can be used as a space for exercise, entertainment, and relaxation. The legacy left by this Olympic park boosts the social, economic, and cultural standing of Saint-Denis.

The high performance building design research studio focuses on sustainability in design. Students worked in pairs to design a library in Cleveland, Ohio. The projects follow the AIA Framework for Design Excellence’s 10 design principles and used Cove.tool to analyze daylighting, glare, energy and water usage, and cost optimization. The studio also explored how libraries are designed now compared to 25 years ago. The program accommodates some of the traditional spaces of past libraries with those that meet the needs of a modern library in providing access to technology and new media. The projects from the class will be entered in the 2021 AIA COTE Top Ten for Students awards competition.

The massing of the library transitions the building from a neighborhood-friendly height to city heights; the east side is 3 stories while the west side, which faces downtown Cleveland, is 5 stories. The form of the library is created by the nearby freight train line, the main street, and the abandoned Westinghouse factory next door, the original planned site for the project.

The library combines modern and traditional library programs, so the design reflects that by intersecting a modern glass volume with a traditional brick one similar to the abandoned building across the train tracks.

A major focus of the design is to create spaces for the community both inside and outside of the library. There are flexible learning and event spaces within the library as well as a community garden, courtyard, and access to the city’s bus and bike share programs outside. This achieves the goal of providing resources and access to members of the community, which is what libraries are intended to do.

The library is arranged programmatically like many libraries of today are; with the louder spaces on lower floors and quieter spaces above. The second floor has many of the community spaces typical of newer libraries: creative rooms, art studios, and multimedia collections. The third floor houses the entire children’s collection and programs while the fourth and fifth floors are reserved for the adult collections, with the fifth floor being an academic library. The second and third floors are open to the atrium, while the fourth and fifth floors have access to the roof garden and outdoor learning space.

To maximize sustainable energy production, the southeast and southwest glass facades have Grätzel PV panels. These are innovative dye-sensitized solar cells that produce energy through a process similar to photosynthesis. While these panels are 50% less efficient in energy production, they are far more sustainable to produce than silicon cells and cost less per panel. The panels on the facade are automated to be positioned at angles that maximize sunlight absorption throughout the day.

The facade design, conceptually, resembles book spines on a shelf; tall vertical windows on the brick volume and the vertical, colorful Grätzel panels on the modern volume, which creates a bright, playful space inside when the light passes through the colored cells.

The Concrete + Light design research studio introduced students to the evolving technology of 3D printed concrete. Using parametric modeling through Grasshopper, pairs of students designed spaces of reflection.

3D printing of the concrete with a pump attached to an ABB robot arm opened new possibilities for forms not practical through traditional concrete construction methods. This studio provided new experiences in parametric modeling and code generation as well as lab experience with printing our designs at full scale.

Our project experimented with integrating other materials in the design by changing the toolpath of the robot to allow room for steel inserts that hold wooden beams.

Located in the Schreyer Garden of the HUB Lawn, in the heart of campus, the site provides a quiet refuge from the bustling campus life.

The garden has four existing benches around a circular grassy lawn with a path off of the main walkway cutting through the center. The designed structure is composed of three curving concrete walls, creating a semi-enclosed space of reflection for students and faculty passing through campus. The design of the walls provides additional seating to the Schreyer Garden, each area of the design with a different purpose. The seating offers a unique area to hold a small meeting, have a conversation with a friend or colleague, or spend a few moments alone in between classes. One bench offers a conversation area using the existing benches and the bench that is integrated into the concrete wall structure. Another is in the main space created by the walls, where a bench provides opportunity for solo reflection or a private space to speak with one another. The third bench is facing the center of the garden, offering views of campus and people passing by. The wood beams across the top of the interior space cast dark shadows on the light curved concrete surface. Vines wrapped around the beams bring nature and life inside the concrete vessel.

The walls are coded using a network of curves created using x, y, and z coordinates.

To create a more functional parametric design, variables such as height, z-coordinate, and offset distance are controlled by a set of universal sliders for the entire design.

These variables can easily be adjusted after each concrete print to accommodate changes.

3D printed concrete technology has a limitation that needed to be accounted for in the design.

Each layer of concrete beads needs to be between 65 and 90 degrees from the center of the layer below to avoid collapse of the structure.

The code below is an automated test that reads through a data set of points from the designed wall and analyzes the angle. If any of those points does not meet the set parameters required for a successful concrete print, the wall changes from white to yellow. This code helped to ensure that each concrete print for our design was successful.

125th Street and 5th Avenue is a major cultural intersection in Manhattan where a major northsouth artery of the city meets Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, the main street in Harlem. The New Media Center is a technology hub dedicated to the research, production, and presentation of new technologies. With studios for local artists, extended & mixed reality development labs, production, exhibition, and theater spaces, the center dedicates itself to the next generation of media in the arts and sciences. The Harlem New Media Center is a bold, modern design intended to stand out on the prominent intersection of New York City, designed to be an ever-changing building that can adapt to the evolving technologies.

From the beginning of the project, my goal was to design a building with a sculptural center volume that is visible from the street and draws people in. This also connects the Harlem New Media Center to the National Black Theater across the street, which has a visible extrusion in the roof where the main theater space is.

This idea evolved into 2 twisting concrete stair cores that provide the circulation, mechanical distribution, and main vertical structure for the entire building. This spiraling concrete mass is visible through the curtain wall, which has a grid angled 29º to reflect the Manhattan street grid. The core is also visible from many points in the building, offering views between floors.

The rising concrete double-helix presented problems for arranging program on each floor. The main space on each floor is located in the middle, wrapped in the concrete stair core. Each of these spaces is shaped by the movement of the spiral.

A major design goal for this project is energy-efficiency and maximizing renewable energy. The roof is dedicated to photovoltaic and solar thermal panels, totaling 86 panels and 1,548 ft2. 43 are dedicated to photovoltaic energy production for the building. 43 are dedicated to solar thermal energy used to heat greywater for the building, powering the boiler and hot water tank.

Other passive systems in the building include automated windows that allow natural ventilation and automated shading integrated into the curtain wall system, passive heat gain from direct sunlight on the 5th Avenue facade, and high-recycled content materials. The building has two MTA bus stops serving routes in Manhattan and the Bronx. It is 2 blocks from subway stops on the red and green lines. Additional environmentally-conscious transportation methods include adding a Citi Bike station and eco-friendly car preferred parking spots on the 5th Avenue side of the building.

The sixth and seventh floors house the performance theater, where the future of performance can be presented. With a backdrop of Harlem through the window behind the stage, guests will experience new audio-visual developments in mixed reality for musical performances, lectures, and presentations.

During my senior year of high school, I completed an in-depth individual research project for the W.I.S.E. program, an individual study course for seniors. I worked with Richard Alderiso of DIGroup Architecture and the former stadium project manager for US Bank Stadium, Grant Till. I researched current NFL stadium design trends and teams in need of a new home, choosing the Buffalo Bills. I designed a stadium concept located in Delaware Park.

I presented my research and design proposal in a 20-minute presentation to an audience of 70 people. This project was the roots of my passion to design sports facilities, and the start of my research that will culminate with my undergraduate thesis.

The Buffalo Bills have been playing in Orchard Park since 1973. Relocating the team to Delaware Park, a public golf course in Delaware Park brings the Bills back to Buffalo, just 2 miles north of their original home, War Memorial Stadium. The design is driven by the desire to connect the team back to the city. The south atrium acts as a lens to the city, a large glass-enclosed facade curving to mirror the nearby highway, but also taking the shape of a lens focusing the culture of the city into the venue. The north entrance reflects the existing neo-classical architecture in Delaware Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. By maintaining 1/3 of the site as designated green space, it connects the stadium to the city’s network of parks and parkways and leads all the way to downtown and the shore of Lake Erie. With the large site, there is still ample space for parking and tailgating, a staple at Bills football games.
