HAJJAR COMPETITION, State College, PA
1 WEEK
Professor William Hajjar was an architecture professor at Penn State. He designed many houses in the State College area. To honor his heritage, third year students participate in the Hajjar Competition. The task of the competition this particular year was to design a house that pairs one of the four classic elements of nature with a season. I chose to emulate Hajjar’s style which was present in all of his houses. The house is divided by a rammed earth wall which is both structural and uses thermal mass for climate control. On one side of the wall are the public spaces while the private spaces are on the other side.

DOLMEN CULTURAL CENTER, Aldeia da Mata, PORTUGAL
6 WEEKS
Located near the city of Aldeia da Mata, a Neolithic-period tomb, called a Dolmen, sits on a gently sloped mound. Students were tasked with designing a cultural center to educate visitors on Neolithic history and display Neolithic art. My design divides the program into 5 buildings, separated by use. Each building is sized to not overpower the size of the Dolmen. The entrance to the tomb faces east, so the approach to the cloister comes from the east and leads visitors through the buildings before reaching the Dolmen. Axes slice through the network of buildings in plan, visually connecting them.

NEUE GALERIE EXTENSION, New York, NY
15 WEEKS
The Neue Galerie is a small museum located on the Museum Mile stretch of 5th Avenue in Manhattan. It was converted from a mansion and now houses the famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Gustav Klimt. This project was for the NCMA competition among second year students. My addition design for the Neue addition accentuates the Neue’s grid that appears in plan and elevation and meshes it with a vertical grid defined by 3 rectangular volumes that hold the new museum’s program. Windows on the existing 86th street Neue façade are extruded through the museums, puncturing the party walls to connect the two spaces, as well as creating the openings into the CMU volumes. My entry in the competition placed as an honorable mention.

BALD EAGLE STATE PARK KAYAK RENTAL CENTER, Howard, PA
4 WEEKS
Located about 30 minutes north of Penn State is Bald Eagle State Park and Bald Eagle Lake, a man-made lake controlled by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Students were tasked with designing a kayak rental center for the park, consisting of kayak storage, changing rooms, a cafe, and offices. The site contained a challenging condition, the water level fluctuates 20 feet throughout the year, as the USACE control the water level to prevent flooding. My solution was a long, fixed dock leading to the kayak accessories storage, which was connected to a hinged dock leading down to the kayak rack floating on the surface of the lake.

CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER, State College, PA
7 WEEKS
Given a site behind the Penn State Arboretum, students were prompted to design a community arts center nestled in the woods. The original program called for 3,000 square feet, but is adjusted to be 3,300 square feet. The center includes indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces, studio, indoor and outdoor workshops, and offices. The arts center is geared towards a specific medium of art, in this case, the medium being ceramics.

BUFFALO BILLS STADIUM CONCEPT, Buffalo, NY During my senior year of high school, I participated in WISE, an individual study course where seniors are encouraged to perform in-depth research on a topic of their choice. As a part of my project, I worked with a local architect, Richard Alderiso of DIGroup Architecture, and the former stadium project manager for US Bank Stadium, Grant Till. After 3 months of research on current design trends of NFL stadiums and potential teams in need of a new home, I began researching the city of Buffalo and designing a stadium for the Bills in Delaware Park. My final presentation consisted of a 23-minute presentation to 70 people, including Richard and Grant (via Skype), which summarized my research and presented my design. I had no knowledge of architecture softwares, so a majority of my drawings were done in Photoshop.

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
THE GETTY CENTER, Los Angeles, CA To develop hand-constructed model making, students were assigned a museum famous for the architecture. I was assigned the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California. The goal was to develop a complete understanding of the design through research. Hand-crafted models of the complex site and geometric architecture displayed the outcomes of the research. The final product is a puzzle demonstrating a strong concept found in the museum’s architecture. The Getty Center was shaped from the hilltop site it sits on, filled with smaller geometric spaces.

VILLA STEIN DE MONZIE, Vaucresson, France A hand-drafted plan and elevation of Le Corbusier’s Villa Stein de Monzie in Vaucresson, France. The goal of this drawing was to learn how to draft shadows based on sun angles and time of day. The drawing also incorporated my learning of hand rendering. MEDIUM: GRAPHITE ON VELLUM
