It is with profound gratitude and joy that we present the 10th Anniversary Souvenir of the CSI Church Sydney. We thank God from the depths of our hearts for guiding and blessing the CSI Church in Sydney through these years of spiritual growth, community service, and unwavering faith and transformation.

In an era marked by rapid changes and challenges, both within the church and in the world around us, the CSI Church has remained steadfast in its mission to serve God and the community. As we celebrate this milestone, we remember the rich history of our church, its founding members, and the countless members who have dedicated their services to growth of the church and its faith for future generations.

This souvenir captures the essence of our church’s journey over the past 10 years. It is filled with valuable memories, articles, memoirs, and photographs that reflect the collective efforts of our members and leaders. These pages bear witness to the many accomplishments and blessings bestowed upon our church by God’s grace.

As we reflect on our journey, let us renew our commitment to the mission of the Church of South India. Let this year be a time of thanksgiving, reflection, and renewed dedication. Let us strive to continue the work started in Sydney in 2014 by a small group of CSI ethos initiators, spreading the light of Christ in a world that is often clouded by materialism and secularism.

This souvenir is not just a reflection of our past, but also a beacon for the future. It reminds us of our responsibility to carry forward the mission of the church with love, sincerity, and faithfulness. May these pages inspire us to keep the flame of faith burning brightly as we move forward together into the future.

We place this Souvenir in your hands, with love and sincerity. As you read through these pages, may you find inspiration and encouragement in the stories, poems, and reflections shared by our church family. We express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this Souvenir, and to those who worked tirelessly to bring it to life.

With best compliments from

Presbyter’s Message

Greetings in the Mighty Matchless Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, “…Follow it, so that you may know the way you should go, for you have not passed this way before… (Joshua 3: 4a).

The Lord almighty has given the CSI Church Sydney, the grace to enter a significant milestone in our community’s history. CSI Church Sydney will be celebrating its10th anniversary, marking a decade of faith, service - and growth. Our church has played a vital role in the faith formation of our community, ensuring our children grow in faith. Let us thank God for all the blessings and graciousness in our lives. It is a time to recollect, retrospect and remember the varied ways in which God is continuing to accompany us. Continue to live and walk with His grace and may Lord almighty lead us in thy grace over our faith journey ahead.

It was a humble beginning with a few members, the pioneers who toiled hard in the emergence of the CSI Sydney congregation. The prayers and commitment of the people along with the earnest desire to worship God in the CSI order familiar to them helped this congregation grow to what it is today. During its initial stages, the leadership and support of Vicars from CSI Melbourne was significant in the development of this congregation. Further growth was achieved by parish priests appointed by the CSI Synod. During these periods, the timely episcopal visits, have spiritually enriched the Church’s growth. Today, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary on the theme ‘Sublime 2024 – A Decade of Symphony’ as a thanksgiving to the Lord almighty.

In the book of Joshua, chapter 3 mentions the ark of the covenant nine times. That means the ark is more important than anything else in the story. The ark contained the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod, and a pot/jar of manna. It represented the gracious presence of God with his people. If Israel truly wanted God’s guidance, the people must learn to treat the Lord with respect.

Souvenir 9

Note the reason given in the text; “for you have not passed this way before.” Let us be clear on the main point: Only God knows where we should go. We make our plans, but God determines our steps. Everyone reading this message has some idea about the future. We have our big hopes and big dreams. But when all is said and done, only God knows which way we should go. We are not as smart as we think we are. But that is okay because Jesus knows where we are, and he knows where we need to be tomorrow and the next day and the next and all the way to the end. Looking back on this faith journey of the past ten glorious years enriching, rewarding, and gratifying. With the Lord’s guidance we faced all the challenges during these years, and we have gracefully grown.

In this auspicious moment I want to thank the Pastorate Committee members for their leadership and hard work in building our Church ministry. The dedication and commitment of the leaders of all the wings of the church viz. the Sunday School, the Choir, the Women’s Fellowship, the Men’s Fellowship, the Youth Fellowship is truly commendable. The Area Representatives and Convenors for various programmes of the Church have actively contributed to the growth of the Church and the ministries over these years. I appreciate the 10th anniversary Subcommittee and the souvenir editorial team in making this endeavour a meaningful one. Their dedication and hard work deserve appreciation and we are grateful for the support we received from all the members. May Lord Almighty continue to inspire us and guide our Church for the betterment of the kingdom of God.

With prayerful regards, Rev. ANEESH L. SuJAN

Sublime 2024 Convenor’s Note

Itis indeed my privilege & honour to be nominated by the members as the convenor of our church’s 10th anniversary celebrations. This is a celebration of God’s faithfulness & love. To mark this milestone the church has decided to host an evening of worship & praise aptly named Sublime 2024, featuring one of India’s finest Christian duo artists, Immanuel Henry & his wife Shruty Joy.

While we celebrate with praise & worship, we also wanted to create a historical document chronicling our journey in the last 10 years through this souvenir, to serve as testimony to future generations of God’s provision & his hand in establishing this community in Sydney. A community that I believe is expected to be the salt & light in this city.

As a member of the CSI church Sydney since its inception in 2014, I can truly testify that our God is an awesome God, reflecting on the vision that was planted more than 10 years ago to now a vibrant community that we currently have united in serving God.

It is also amazing to see how God has provided us at every step of the way, whether it was the provision of the right spiritual leadership through our Achens at the right time, or a physical church to conduct our services, or raising up lay leaders to stand in the gap when we did not have a priest available like our beloved Philip uncle who was a pillar to us. We are blessed to have a dedicated youth group to lead the worship along with our choir & a Sunday school to nuture young minds in the way of the Lord

As I look into the future, I have no doubt that what God has started he will fulfill for his glory. I believe he will grow our church to be the body of Christ that lives in love, joy, peace, hope, care & compassion for a dying hopeless world – We will truly be the 5th Gospel, the Good News that this world so desperately needs.

As the convenor, I want to thank Aneesh Achen, the pastorate committee, members of the Sublime 2024 & souvenir committees and members of our church for all your support & dedication to making our 10th anniversary celebrations a memorable one.

14 Souvenir
CSI Church Sydney

Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

It brings me great joy to learn that the Sydney CSI Church is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Therefore, I express my sincere wishes to the entire congregation through this souvenir, which is being published as part of the tenth anniversary celebration. Years ago, you all relocated from Kerala to Sydney as part of your job. Even though you come from different parts of Kerala, the rich heritage and tradition of the CSI have brought us together. The establishment of a new church in Sydney has created a spiritual fellowship and a loving relationship among all of you. I remember with great gratitude all those who worked hard to establish this Church and played a vital role in its current growth.

Church of South India Madhya Kerala Diocese

The church is a sacred space not only for prayer but also for hearing God's voice and submitting ourselves to know God's will. Each worship provides us with an opportunity to renew and dedicate ourselves. Therefore, those who leave the church after each worship can bring a positive impact on the world. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus asked us to be the salt of the earth. The action of salt is silent, but it can be detected immediately if it is not present. As the people of God, we should be capable of influencing and enriching the world quietly, just as salt does. As you know, we live in a world full of evil. Each year brings more violence and injustice in the world. But we must act as a counter society that impacts the world through good deeds, even when faced with such wickedness. It is my prayer that God continue to grant the church sufficient grace in the coming days to become a community that can influence the world through positive actions.

Before I conclude, let me congratulate Rev. Anish L. Sujan and the members of the Church Committee for their profound leadership and for the initiative to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the church. I hope that the friendship and fellowship among the congregation will be strengthened, and that you will gain the divine guidance necessary for the church to carry on its journey during this anniversary celebration.

May your lives be filled with God’s blessings and peace.

Yours in Christ,

Bishop

Kottayam, Monday, 10 June 2024

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

(Matthew 5:13-16)

10th a nniversary Celebrations message

It was on June 28, 2014, at St Thomas Anglican Church in Moorebank that the inaugural meeting took place, marking the genesis of what would become the Sydney CSI congregation.

Gathered in that sacred space were 31 individuals, including children, who convened to embark on a journey toward establishing a CSI Malayalamspeaking community in Sydney. It was a momentous occasion, underscored by prayer and a shared vision to form a committee that would oversee the inception of the first CSI Malayalam service in the region. From that pivotal moment, the trajectory of Sydney CSI has been one of unwavering progress, continuously forging ahead despite encountering various challenges, be they financial or existential. In reflection, I am profoundly grateful to the Almighty for guiding us through each trial and triumph.

With the appointment of our second resident vicar, Anish Achen, I am filled with hope for the continued expansion and enrichment of our faithful community. It is my fervent prayer

that we not only grow in numbers but also extend our outreach beyond the confines of our immediate boundaries, spreading the gospel throughout Sydney and beyond. How wondrous it is that we, as Malayalam-speaking believers, have found a home in this beautiful corner of the world.

Yet, as we press forward, let us not forget the importance of humility. Our human frailties may lead us astray at times, but through prayer and humility, we can realign ourselves with God's will. It is imperative that we remain grounded as we progress, recognising that our growth is contingent upon divine grace. The history of the church bears witness to this truth—God can either nurture our growth or impede it according to His divine plan.

Our journey thus far has not been without its share of trials and tribulations. Countless parishioners, past and present, have dedicated themselves to the nurturing and expansion of our community. Let us pause to express our gratitude for their sacrifices and contributions, for without them, our journey would have been far more arduous.

Reflecting on our humble beginnings, I am reminded of the initial conversations that paved the way for our congregation's formation. Long before the official meeting at Moorebank, I engaged in discussions with individuals like Bijo Thomas John and Roy Mundakkal, expressing my desire to establish a Malayalam-speaking CSI congregation in Sydney. Through prayerful deliberation, we laid the prayerful foundation over phone, for what would become a thriving community. Despite the challenges of distance and time constraints, we pressed forward, fueled by faith and determination. During a demanding period of my life, I juggled multiple responsibilities as a pastor in Melbourne CSI while also providing oversight to parishes in Brisbane and Adelaide, all while pursuing my doctoral studies. Amidst this busyness, our journey for our first meeting from Melbourne to Sydney and back was not just a simple road trip. Packed into a car were two families comprising seven individuals, including Halish, Athira and Ann, Jacob George, Anela, and Christina. This trip marked the beginning of our initial discussions with the Sydney faithfuls.

As we approach our 10th anniversary, let us offer thanks to the Almighty for His continued guidance and provision. In an increasingly secularised world, we remain steadfast in our mission as messengers of the gospel, holding fast to the hope of Christ's imminent return. It is this hope that propels us forward, even in the face of mounting hostility toward the church and its teachings.

May we remain faithful stewards of this calling, inspiring future generations to carry the torch of faith onward. With hope as our anchor and commitment as our compass, we will navigate the challenges ahead, secure in the knowledge that our Savior will one day return to usher in a new era of healing and restoration.

Nurturing Growth & m ission: reflections

as the first Vicar of CSi

Church Sydney

On behalf of my family, I would like to thank God and congratulate the CSI Church Sydney for God’s goodness and blessings in the last ten years. The privilege of being the first Vicar of the CSI Church Sydney was a remarkable journey filled with challenges, opportunities, and blessings. From the outset, we as a family were welcomed into a warm and inviting parish eager to embark on a journey of spiritual growth and community outreach.

The initial task at hand was to foster unity and cohesion among the congregation while charting a course towards growth and mission. Over the course of five fulfilling years, we worked tirelessly to streamline the ministry of the church and expand its outreach efforts.

One of the key initiatives undertaken was the establishment of Area Prayer Groups, providing members with smaller, more intimate settings for worship and fellowship. Additionally, annual conventions, parish picnics, and family camps were organized to strengthen bonds within the congregation and foster a sense of community.

A particularly impactful outreach program was "Feed Hope" where members of the parish volunteered their time and resources to serve the less fortunate in the community. This initiative not only provided practical assistance but also embodied the church's commitment to caring and sharing.

Despite the challenges faced by a diaspora community, the members of the CSI Church Sydney remained steadfast in their dedication to both tradition and adaptation. Balancing the rich heritage of their forefathers with the realities of their new environment required careful navigation, but the congregation embraced this challenge with grace and resilience.

One of the most significant hurdles encountered was the search for a permanent place of worship. However, the congregation took a bold step forward by acquiring a parsonage, laying the foundation for future growth and expansion. This symbolic gesture reflected their unwavering faith and commitment to establishing a spiritual home for generations to come.

As we look ahead, it's evident that the journey of the CSI Church Sydney is still in its formative years. The next decade will undoubtedly bring its own set of trials and triumphs, but with the dedication, perseverance, and prayers of the congregation, I am confident that they will continue to thrive and flourish.

In conclusion, leading the CSI Church Sydney has been a deeply rewarding experience, characterized by a strong sense of fellowship, mission, and service. As we reflect on the past and look towards the future, let us continue to uphold the values of love, unity, and compassion that define our congregation, both within the CSI Malayalee community and the larger community in which we reside. Together, we can build a church that is not only relevant but transformative, enriching the lives of all who encounter its ministry.

Ten Years of God’s Grace in Sydney

Greetings in the precious name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. I join you in praising God as the CSI church in Sydney celebrates the milestone of its decennial year. When we look back, we praise the Lord for the marvelous ways in which he guided us across the last decade. I deem it a joy and a privilege to be considered part of this momentous journey.

One of the greatest desires of any diaspora community is to be able to keep connected to their heart culture and the most practical way to do so is to worship in a culturally appropriate manner. The desire to have a CSI congregation in Sydney emanated from this deep interest not only to worship but also to ensure that the next generations are not uprooted from their inherent spirituality.

It was my joy being the Vicar in Charge of CSI Sydney while ministering in Melbourne. What made the congregation in Sydney special was the fact that most elements of a good church were very visible in them. The people who came together not only wanted a Malayalam worship but also had a strong theological and biblical foundation. They had a spirituality of the heart. The worship services were authentic and the amount of preparation that went behind each service was commendable. The fabulous sense of community and ownership made them a welcoming, inviting and inclusive community where everyone who spoke the language and, in some cases even without that, felt very much at home. The missional focus and the keen interest in discipleship were evident in the small group meetings of the Sunday School,

Youth, Women and the Elderly. The Cottage prayers and special events stood out for its quality. The Choir did a commendable job in making the services meaningful. The generosity and the giving of the people knew no bounds and the people who committed to leadership knew the essence and spirit of what servant leadership meant. The dependance on God through prayer for each major step ahead was specially noted. The effective use of the social media was yet another specialty that must be mentioned.

A marked feature of the CSI congregation in Sydney was their hospitality. I cherished staying in several homes and felt at home in each place. The ecumenical openness was evident how they reached out to other churches during special occasions. They were flexible even to adjust service timing to suit the availability of ministers and were happy to have the Mar Thoma priests also lead services occasionally. Being part of special events like baptism, betrothal, marriages and house warmings was always an added joy.

Two landmark decisions that would always mark the first ten years would be first, the courage to decide to have presbyters from all CSI dioceses in Kerala by rotation and second; the boldness with which they decided they could go ahead in having a full-time priest exclusively for Sydney without waiting for too long.

Personally, I would always cherish the wonderful time spent in Sydney. They knew to love their pastor and I enjoyed the same. So did my family. The leadership they gave to the All Australia CSI fellowship and in the local and global mission scene will be always remembered with gratitude and appreciation.

The journey of a Church is a continuum. I remember with gratitude Rev. Joby John who ministered before me and Rev. Sujit David and Rev. Anish Sujan who ministered after me. Without naming anyone I would also thank all the wonderful leaders of the church who gracefully worked alongside me during the four years I was there and across the last ten years and even before.

As the journey of the Church continues may it have the magnetic attraction that only Christ can gift a congregation, inviting several more people to come and join the movement. May CSI Sydney continue in the strong spiritual foundation being able to impact people of all generations with the power of the Gospel. May the fellowship always remain fragrant and special. May generosity mark the identity of the congregation and let people LOVE being part of this wonderful community of lovely people.

God Bless,

Greetings from melbourne CSi Church

Indeed, I am delighted to know that the Sydney CSI Church is celebrating her 10th year of God's faithfullness. On this historic occasion, let this be your testimony as prophet Samuel declared at Mizpah, 'Ebenezer' "Thus far the Lord has helped us." I do join with you to thank God Almighty for thy unfailing love and faithfullness that brought you thus far.

I wish and pray that this anniversary celebration may turn into a moment of rededicating yourself as a body of Christ that would remain professionally competent, spiritually alive and socially relevant in this part of the world to bring the saving knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and work hard for the extension of God's Kingdom.

Sincerely,

"If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth."

message from Br Jose Peter

Dear CSI Church Family,

As you celebrate your 10th anniversary, I am filled with immense joy, gratitude, and admiration for the incredible journey you've embarked upon. A decade of faithful service, unwavering dedication, and unrelenting passion for God's kingdom is truly a remarkable achievement.

Over the past ten years, your church has blossomed into a vibrant, dynamic community, embodying the values of love, compassion, and service. Your impact extends far beyond the walls of the church, touching hearts and lives in the community and beyond. You have been a beacon of hope, a shining example of God's love and grace.

I am honoured to have been a part of your story, sharing the scriptures, providing spiritual nourishment, and witnessing firsthand the transformation of lives. Your congregation's thirst for God's word, your eagerness to grow in faith, and your commitment to living out your beliefs have been a constant source of inspiration.

As the Psalmist writes, "The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy." (Psalm 126:3) Your church is a testament to God's faithfulness and goodness.

I praise God for the tireless service and unwavering commitment to His kingdom from the church fathers you’ve been blessed with (Victor achen, Sujith achen and Aneesh achen) and other leaders among you, in the past decade. They were instrumental in laying the foundation of the church’s growth and helped shape the identity and purpose. Their teachings have been inspirational. Their selflessness and humility has been a shining

example. As we celebrate this milestone, let us honor their faithfulness. May you continue to follow their example and serve Him with all your hearts.

1 Thes 5:12-13, acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.

As you mark this significant milestone, I pray that God continues to:

l Guide you with His wisdom and direction, leading you into new avenues of ministry and mission (Proverbs 3:6)

l Strengthen you with His power and grace, equipping you to face the challenges ahead (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

l Bless you with His favor and abundance, providing for your needs (Philippians 4:19)

l use you as a catalyst for transformation, bringing hope, healing, and restoration to a broken world (Matthew 28:18-20)

May your roots grow deeper in faith, your branches stretch wider in outreach, and your fruit be abundant in every good work (Colossians 2:6-7). May your legacy continue to inspire generations to come.

Psalms 78:4 We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.

Please accept my heartfelt felicitations on this special occasion. I wish you many more years of fruitful ministry, spiritual growth, and joy in serving the Lord.

With love, blessings and congratulations,

message by rev John Barr

It is a great privilege and pleasure to present some thoughts and reflections concerning my association with the CSI Church in Sydney. This began in 2017 when the CSI Church began worshipping in West Epping uniting Church. At the time the Rev Vinod Victor from Melbourne exercised pastoral care and offered leadership of the sacraments on a part time basis. Then in March 2018 the Rev Sujit David arrived from Bangalore to serve as the first full-time presbyter. West Epping uniting Church was delighted to receive the CSI congregation as we are deeply conscious of the important links between the CSI and the uniting Church in Australia. Here we share common commitments to ecumenism while we are aware of the deep historical links between our two churches.

The uniting Church in Australia is indebted to the CSI because the CSI paved the way to union and what it means to obey Christ’s command that we “may be one” (John 17:21). Hence, we feel a deep affinity with the CSI and we acknowledge that our links are an important source of inspiration and encouragement.

Many wonderful memories come to mind as the CSI Church worshiped in West Epping. We are thankful for those warm invitations to share in worship. The annual Christmas Carol Service was something the people of West Epping will never forget. There was a

real sense of joy and celebration expressed in these services.

For me, personally, I deeply appreciated the reverence and awe these services embodied. I always felt a real spiritual presence as the liturgy was read and Eucharist was celebrated.

I wish to thank the Pastorate Committee for their friendship. My thanks also go to the Rev Vinod Victor and to the Rev Sujit David, who I very much felt was a real colleague as we shared ministry together. Thanks also to Sonu and the family.

The CSI Church in Sydney plays a vital part in maintaining links with the mother church in India. There is also the priority of ministering to newly arrived migrants as they settle in a new land here in Australia while there is the crucial task of ensuring the faith is passed on to future generations.

The CSI Church is true gift to the wider church here in Sydney. God’s blessing be upon the Rev Aneesh Sujan, the Pastorate Committee all members of the church. Thank you for being here. We give thanks to God for your faith and witness!

Nestled in the vibrant tapestry of Sydney's diverse religious landscape stands the CSI Church, Sydney (Malayalam CSI congregation), a beacon of unity, peace and faith. Embracing the ethos of the Church of South India, this church echoes the profound words of Jesus Christ, envisioning a union where all believers stand as one, true to its motto ‘That they all may be one’. The CSI Church Sydney completes 10 years in our faithful spiritual journey in 2024 and to celebrate this milestone we bring along the musical event Sublime 2024 - A decade of Symphony.

The origin of the CSI church Sydney begins with a first meeting held at Glenquarie Anglican church, that witnessed a spontaneous interest from all gathered there to explore the possibilities of forming a Ma-

layalam CSI congregation in the land they now called home. It immediately became apparent that there was no turning back. God had given us an opportunity to rekindle our faith, to rise from our sluggish ways and to reconnect to familiar patterns of worship in both the traditional vernacular and the contemporary. The work of God for the extension of his kingdom was soon made manifest through the expressions of our faith.

Rev. Jobby John, then Vicar of St. Mathew’s Anglican & CSI congregations, Ashburton,

iSTorY

TheCSI Church Sydney is a united Protestant Church, a result of the union of several denominations. True to its motto “that they all may be one” the church represents the cause of ecumenism and prides itself in the biblical teachings and liturgical worship.

In 2014, the needs of a scattered diaspora were met when the vision of a small group of people became a reality under the leadership of Rev. Joby John, who was then the vicar of the Melbourne CSI Church. The inaugural service was held at the Anglican cathedral and was duly solemnized by Rev. Thomas. K .Oommen the Moderator of the Church of South India. The church then had the opportunity to gather once every month at the St. Anne’s Anglican Church at Hammondville. In answer according to the sincere desire of people, the committee liaised with the Anglican and Uniting churches to find a suitable venue.

As a result of relentless search and fervent prayer, The uniting Church at Carlingford under the leadership of Rev. John Barr opened its doors to accommodate the needs of the people. our h

The CSI Church in its initial phase enjoyed the support of our sister churches in other states, especially the Melbourne Anglican Church who were willing to allow Rev. Vinod Victor, vicar of the Melbourne Anglican church to conduct Holy communion services once a month. under the dedicated efforts of the late Philip C George, regular weekly services finally became a reality. Our sister churches such as the Marthoma church, the Indian Orthodox church, the Jacobite Syrian church were all unified in their support both prayerfully and by extending valuable service.

Special services were conducted by Rev. V. Thomas and Rev. K. C. George. It is to be noted that their services were integral in being able to observe significant services in the calendar of events.

The church grew steadily and proceeded to take the next step in procuring a Priest in liaising with the CSI Synod for a Full time Priest. Though the process was long and arduous, God blessed the vision and finally in the year 2017, Rev. Sujit David was appointed as the first full-time minister.

It was an exciting time when the church was able to flourish under its own strong leadership.

The cause of ecumenism grew under Sujit Achen’s leadership. There were regular bible studies and small group meetings, outreach activities and the CSI church was not only at the forefront of ecumenism but played a significant role in liaising with other churches for a strong ecclesiastical worship. The church worked with renewed vigour to reach out

to those in poverty and to leave no stone unturned in fulfilling the mandate given in the Great Commission. The CSI faithful were encouraged to participate in programs such as Read the Bible so that parishioners could be effective instruments in understanding the word of God and growing their faith.

The current Presbyter of the church is Rev. Aneesh Sujan who took over the reins to continue serving the church. The church is progressive and is constantly motivated to engage in seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit in moving amongst the people. The wings of the church such as the Women’s Fellowship, The Men’s Fellowship, The Choir and the ministries of young adults and Sunday School take pride of place.

We would like to grow in future as a people that are called by God to serve the cause of the weak and deprived, to make a commitment for mission, to equip young, aspiring candidates for church ministry and to “Arise and Shine, according to the need of the hour.

“May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us — yes, establish the work of our hands.”
(Psalm 90:17)

CSi Church Sydney Sunday School

TheSunday School pays its respects to late Philip C. George uncle and appreciates the teachers who passionately gathered the children for Bible lessons, song and skit time.It was their tireless effort at the outset that laid the foundation for a structured class time after church service every Sunday.

under the leadership of Rev Sujit David, Sunday School received a restructuring, and we followed a set pattern which also saw the introduction of World Sunday School Day Service, Sunday School Anniversary Day and third Sunday presentations from the children on a regular basis.

We have had many children’s ministry presenters from sister churches in Sydney who have given us a great start to the academic years in the past and we want to thank all our presenters and are grateful for their support and commitment.

Like a box of Cadbury Favourites chocolates, the Sunday school is a mixed bunch of

quiet ones, loud ones, happy ones and funny ones. All were in small packages not that long ago but now have blossomed into smart, bright, happy and fun-loving Jesus followers.

Together we love to sing, dance and recite memory verses and always surprise us with their wits and sense of humour.

Our teachers are a dedicated bunch joyfully serving in their capacity for the greater good. Rev Aneesh Sujan has been a great inspiration to our children and us teachers role modelling servant leadership and we all look forward to serving God and his precious children under his leadership.

We pray that our Sunday School remains blessed forever with God’s infinite grace and provisions and look forward to many more young ones joining us in the fold.

May God Bless us all.

CSi Church Choir

TheCSI Church choir was formed to meet the needs of dedicated and talented music lovers among the congregation. They enjoyed raising their voices in jubilant song at the regular Sunday services and on special occasions such as the carol service. The choir was periodically invited by community organisations and churches to contribute to their special events. The choir prides itself in singing the much loved four- part harmony. There are talented choir leaders, instrumentalists and song writers who are zealous in the pursuit of their passion by contributing energetically to the music ministry of the church.

Most notable is the Annual Easter Recital, a signature event hosted by the CSI Church. Both the CSI and Marthoma churches now take turns in hosting the event on an annual basis. This is an opportunity to deliver the narrative of Jesus’ death on the cross and his triumphant victory over the grave through varied musical arrangements orchestrating a symphony for music lovers.

The choir fulfils its prime purpose as stated in Ephesians 5:19, “to address one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart”.

The beauty and harmonious arrangements of the choir helps in meaningful worship, providing a sublime experience for those participating in the choir and the congregation who cherish such heavenly melodies. Traditional repertoires and modern variations have enriched our worship and helped build a sense of community.

CSi Church Sydney Women’s Fellowship

TheWomen of the CSI Church have been instrumental in building the church’s foundation by committing to a small group of bible studies and prayer cells. An active part in growing the physical resources of the church thus far has been through the regular fundraising efforts both

at the harvest festival and whenever fund raising was needed. The women’s fellowship has held bake sales annually wherein our talented bakers have used their talents to bring their culinary creations to the forefront and in turn to boost the resources of the church. Cultural events like Onam

have also been celebrated in grandeur with a special feast to mark the occasion.

A special Women’s Sunday service held every year has women leading the service through lay ministry. Women have contributed to the church by leading prayer

groups at conventions and by reflecting on the word of God at special services. Retreats and other activities are envisioned as future endeavours that will strongly build the women to play an active part in the church’s growth.

The i mportance of Christian men’s Fellowship

Christian men's fellowship is a concept deeply rooted in the Bible, providing a framework for men to come together in faith, support, and spiritual growth. The New Testament, especially, offers numerous examples and directives that form the foundation for such gatherings. One of the most compelling biblical bases for Christian men's fellowship can be found in the relationship between Jesus and His disci-

ples. Jesus selected twelve individuals to follow Him closely, not just as servants or students, but as friends and brothers. This group dynamic is depicted throughout the Gospels, where they share experiences, meals, and teachings, forming a strong bond in their collective mission.

After Jesus' ascension, the early church in Acts continued this tradition of fellowship. Acts 2:42-47 describes believers meeting regularly, breaking bread in homes, praying together, and providing mutual aid. This passage highlights the importance of community, showing that the early Christians valued fellowship as a means of encouragement and growth in their faith.

The concept of brotherhood is another biblical principle central to men's fellowship. Proverbs 27:17 states, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." This verse suggests that men are meant

to influence each other positively, helping each other grow in character and faith.

Moreover, the New Testament frequently encourage believers to bear one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2), exhort one another (Hebrews 3:13), and build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11). These instructions underscore the value of a supportive and edifying community, which is precisely what men's fellowship strives to create.

Today, Christian men's fellowships should aim to replicate this biblical model, offering a space where men can study the Bible, pray together and share life experiences. Such groups often emphasize accountability, integrity, and personal development, echoing the disciples' journey of transformation under Jesus' mentorship.

Also, men's fellowship groups can take in various forms. From small Bible study gatherings, supporting the activities of

other wings of the church, mentoring the youth, the group can provide a platform for discussing relevant topics such as leadership, fatherhood, marriage-and spiritual disciplines, all within a biblical context.

The benefits of such fellowship are manifold. Men can find a sense of belonging, receive guidance on navigating life's challenges, and develop stronger relationships with God and each other. By fostering an environment of trust and openness, men's fellowship groups help individuals to live out their faith authentically and courageously.

The biblical basis for Christian men's fellowship is well-established, drawing from the examples of Jesus and His disciples, the practices of the early church, and the teachings of the apostles. These gatherings serve as a vital component of spiritu-

al life, offering men the opportunity to connect, grow, and lead lives that reflect the love and teachings of Christ. CSI Church Sydney has had an unofficial men’s group that have helped many families in the church move houses, established homes for new migrants and played a vital care giving role for the church and its members.

As a group they have taken the initiative to set up and organise many events of the church and have served the community silently.

They have held Bible study sessions on 3rd Sundays of the month which has been a wonderful forum for spiritual growth and Christian comradery.

We wish our Men’s Fellowship many more years of service in the Lord and for the greater good and encourage more men to join the fold in years to come.

Youth Fellowship CSi Church Sydney

TheYouth wing of the CSI Church has been instrumental from the beginning in playing an active part in the worship services of the church. They have joined with youth from the Marthoma church in leading worship with hymns and special songs at all the church’s special events. Many of our sister churches have seen the youth to be a small but effective group taking significant leadership in leading worship at the Friends of CSI service, which drew members from other churches. The Youth have shown leadership in maintaining unity of faith by having vibrant, meaningful conversations with adults and youngsters from other churches. As role models for the younger generations, they have very well been at the forefront of establishing youth forums where meaningful bible studies have provided opportunities for them to share their faith and look at practical applications in rising to the challenges they face.

The CSI Youth have led the worship each third Sunday English service every month. This has been a great opportunity to not only involve members of the church to participate in the service but also encourage members who do not actively participate in the service to be able to do so.

Throughout this year, the Youth have been actively involved in many of the church activities, namely Feed Hope, the CSI Church Picnic and Christmas Carols. The Youth are

continuously striving to expand the member base and encourage anyone who is interested in being involved in any way.We aim to organise youth gatherings and activities in the future and to strengthen our ties with the various other wings of the CSI Church and into the larger community.

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him". (Colossians 3:17)

The vision to start a Charity and Outreach mission for the CSI Church Sydney commenced in 2021. The Pastorate Committee of the time put forward this vision to the congregation and it was accepted with great enthusiasm.

The aim of the project is to help the homeless, migrants, pensioners, low-income earners, refugees, international students and others who are finding it hard to have a decent meal. It entailed the following:

1. Organise free groceries and other items for daily needs once a month via Foodbank Australia.

Souvenir 49

2. Select a suburb for distribution and ensure a long-term booking of the local community hall for a specified time each month.

3. Obtain membership of our church as a Charity partner of Foodbank which will allow us to collect-purchase groceries and other items from FoodBank at a marginal cost.

4. Mobilize a team of volunteers from the Church to move the groceries.

5. To pray and help the people who are in need.

We used the COVID restrictions of 2021 to build our platform, decide on a venue to reach communities in need, liaise with relevant Councillors and set up a base program through which we will operate. Following discussions with Councillors from Parramatta, Blacktown and Cumberland Councils, a decision was made to use the Toongabbie Community Hall as our base for distribution. As a church we committed ourselves to distributing groceries and fresh produce once a month to anybody in

need, irrespective of background, culture or religion.

The church registered itself with Foodbank as a Charity Partner which gave us the capacity to source groceries and fresh produce from Foodbank, Australia's largest food relief organisation, providing around 70% of food relief distributed to people in need across the country. Foodbank works by providing food to registered charities who then distribute it to people in need. Just under half of the products are free of charge including most fruits, vegetables and fresh bread. Foodbank supplies community kitchens, charities running food pantries, distributing emergency food parcels, cooking classes for people in need, school breakfast programs, etc. To become a Foodbank Agency (charity partner), an organisation needs to be registered with the ACNC (Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission) and maintain public and product liability insurance.

We designed a flyer and distributed it electronically to the community contacts we had developed during our planning phase.

50 Souvenir

These contacts further distributed the information to members in need. We had more flyers printed and put them up around the community hall. We also distributed flyers to the local population.

We began food distribution in 2022, the first distribution being from the boot of two cars. It was extremely humbling to see people queue up for the groceries on a cold Saturday morning. Since 2022, we as a Church have distributed groceries on the 1st Saturday of every month. By God's grace we have stood together shoulder to shoulder each month, transporting 500 –700 kgs of groceries, lifting, sorting, stacking, setting up the hall, cleaning, clearing the premises to reach out to those in need in the

name of our Lord. We have a core group that orders the groceries online at Foodbank during the month, gets the groceries picked up and delivered to the venue on the day. Our current processes run relatively smoothly with many families coming together willingly to volunteer their time and effort towards this mission of serving the community in need.

We have set the foundation and an example for future generations. We have a mix of seniors, adults, young adults and children who come together to make this mission a success for the church.

May God guide us as we go forward to enable us to serve others in his name.

Friends of CSi Service

TheFriends of CSI service was intended to promote ecumenism and foster increased communion with those who had a CSI background, but were now assimilated into other churches. True to its motto ‘that they all may be one’, the leadership of the church under Rev. Sujit David called for an engagement with other churches to foster unity. A lot of Christians embraced this worship service. As part of its rich tapestry, the service celebrated the diverse Indian languages in a response to the gift prayed for by Christ before the passion, the gift of unity. The music featured both old and contemporary led by the Youth and the choir.

Not only did it draw the CSI faithful but held profound relationships with members of various denominations, thus becoming a visible sign of maintaining an identity in Christ.

Speakers from various denominations have instilled the fervour of mission, selfless service and have called for a renewal of the heart and spirit. Friends of the CSI church keep playing a pivotal role in supporting fundraisers and special events. Needless to say, some of them contributed richly both through lay ministry and their generous contributions in the years of the church’s formation. The service is now held in months where there is a fifth Sunday. We are humbled and proud to find common grounds of spiritual expression as we learn to practice the values and teachings of Christ.

IS LovE To You?

Whenwe delve into 1 Corinthians chapter 13, we see that Paul speaks to the Corinthians about love and its value. The passage speaks about the primacy, persistence, and perfection of love over everything else. Paul illustrates the significance of love over other things such as pride, position, status, charismatic signs, prophecy which we believe is important.

1 Corinthians 13:2 says - “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing”. In this verse, Paul emphasises that even possessing great spiritual gifts like prophecy, understanding mysteries, or having deep knowledge and faith is pointless without love. It highlights the idea that love is the highest virtue, surpassing all other qualities or abilities one might pos-

sess. It suggests that without love, no matter how impressive one's spiritual gifts or achievements may be, they are ultimately meaningless. Further, Paul says that even acts of extreme sacrifice—giving away all possessions to help the poor or even sacrificing one's own life for a cause—lack value if they are not motivated by love. No matter how noble or selfless these actions may seem, without love as their foundation, they are ultimately fruitless in terms of spiritual gain. Paul is underscoring that love is the essential motivation behind all truly meaningful actions and sacrifices. We cannot give a one-line definition for ‘Love’. However, Paul defines Love as:

● Love is patient: Love is willing to wait and endure without complaint or frustration. It doesn't rush or demand immediate attention.

● Love is kind: Love shows compassion, empathy, and generosity towards others. It seeks to bring joy and comfort.

● Love does not envy: Love is content with what it has and doesn't care about what others own. It celebrates others' successes without feeling resentment.

● Love does not boast: Love is humble and doesn't seek attention or praise for its actions or accomplishments.

● Love is not proud: Love is not arrogant or self-centered. It recognises the value and worth of others without feeling superior.

● Love does not dishonour others: Love treats others with respect and dignity, avoiding actions or words that would belittle or harm them.

● Love is not self-seeking: Love is not selfish or focused solely on its own interests. Instead, it considers the needs and desires of others.

● Love is not easily angered: Love is patient and slow to become upset or frustrated. It doesn't react impulsively or with hostility.

● Love keeps no record of wrongs: Love forgives and lets go of past mistakes or grievances. It doesn't hold grudges or seek revenge.

● Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth: Love is aligned with goodness and righteousness. It finds joy in honesty, integrity, and moral excellence. It does not find happiness in evil.

Paul concludes stating that other gifts or abilities, which may come to an end or lose their significance over time, love remains constant and unwavering through highs and lows.

Further Paul says, among the three virtues— faith, hope, and love—love holds the highest position. While faith and hope are crucial in Christian life, love surpasses them both in importance and significance. Love is the ultimate expression of God's character and the driving force behind all righteous actions and relationships. So as Paul advised, lets love one another whole heartedly as God loves his people. Souvenir

holy Spirit & m ission of God

Several Old Testament passages envision the presence and the mission of the Holy Spirit in the world to empower humanity to do works of service unto God. This Holy Spirit’s empowering activity throughout the Old Testament era continued in the ministry of Christ. The Holy Spirit performs varied mission and ministries within the body of Christ. The final word of the risen Christ to his disciples guarantees the gift of the Holy Spirit. It expresses the convictions about the universal scope of the church’s mission. Keeping this, we could explore how far the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit encourages us to carry God’s Mission in this world.

HoLY SPIRIT IN THE LIFE oF JESuS

Most significant assertion is that Jesus was conceived through the Holy Spirit. It

Rev. Aneesh L. sujAn

implies that the whole mission including the incarnation was directed by the Spirit. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1: 35; Matthew 1: 18, 20). Even those persons associated with the birth narratives received the Spirit - Elizabeth, Zacharias and Simeon (Luke 1: 41, 67; 2: 25-26). Jesus receives the Holy Spirit at His baptism (Mt. 3: 16; Jn. 1: 33), overcomes the temptation in the wilderness with the Holy Spirit’s fullness (Lk. 4: 1) and then begins His earthly mission with the constant presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus himself lived in the power of

Souvenir

the Spirit and accomplished His mission to the world in that power. The Holy Spirit was clearly with Jesus during his lifetime (Mt. 3: 16; Mk. 1: 10; Lk. 3: 22; 4: 1; 10: 21; Jn. 1: 32; 3: 34; Acts 1: 2), and with this power He achieved His mission on earth (Mt. 12: 28; Lk. 4: 14-15, 18 ff; Jn. 3: 34). It was in the same power that Jesus commissioned the apostles both before (Mt. 10: 20; Jn. 17: 1 8) and after the resurrection (Mt. 28: 19). In Johannine writing (John Chapters 14-16), the Holy Spirit is considered as an agent of cosmic mission. It is the fact that the mission of Jesus was not only Spirit initiated but also Spirit oriented too.

LukE & ACTS: Holy Spirit and The universal Motif of God’s Mission

In Luke 4: 18-19, Jesus proclaims that the Holy Spirit anointed Him and sent Him to deliver the Gospel message. Based on this passage one can view that Spirit-powered Christ’s mission: His ability to forgive sin, and His announcement of the eschatological deliverance of God. Luke describes the mission of Holy Spirit as the anointing, empowering and leading of the Holy Spirit. In Lk. 24: 29 the spirit will sustain and direct the church’s mission. Thus St. Luke consistently links the ever widening scope of the Church’s mission with the work of Spirit. In Acts, age of the Spirit and work of Spirit plays prominent role. The great commission derives its meaning and power wholly and exclusively from the Pentecost event. The promise of Christ before his ascension in Acts 1: 8; may be regarded as a foreshadowing of the expanding ministry of the church and the activity of the Holy Spirit in this ministry has key importance.

The power of the Spirit will inaugurate a mission stretching from Jerusalem through all Judea and Samaria to the entire world.

PENTECoST:

Holy Spirit steered the Holistic Mission

In Acts the coming of the Spirit is portrayed more particularly as a preparation for the world-wide proclamation of Gospel. From Pentecost onward the Church became obedient for the execution of the great commission. New Testament scholar Roland Allen has traced the progression of missionary obedience and ministry from the Pentecost by the Holy Spirit.

1. Gentle Missions

Rapid expansion of the early church, move on the part of the Antioch church to contemplate the Gentile mission describes as the move explicitly in terms of the Holy Spirit (Acts 13: 2). It was not only selecting but also sending, seen to be the work of the Holy Spirit (Acts. 13: 4). The whole of the subsequent first missionary itinerary is, seen as an operation of the Holy Spirit. Another feature of the Spirit’s work in the Gentile mission is His guidance, an aspect which comes out clearly in Acts 16: 6. It states that Paul and his party were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia and equally forbidden to enter Bithynia (Acts. 16: 7). The extension of the church to the Gentiles is seen the work of Holy Spirit as in the launching of worldwide mission.

2. Empowering the witness: Corporate Mission

The Holy Spirit enables the Church to en-

gage in mission by providing the power, authority, and ability to its members. The presence of God by the Spirit meant for Paul the powerful and empowering presence of God. Empowering mission of the Holy Spirit is active in and through giving of spiritual gifts to Church. In Rom. 12: 6-8; 1 Cor. 12: 8-10, 28-30; Eph. 4:11 enumerated list of spiritual gifts. The actual bestowing of the gifts is seen to be the sovereign decision of the Spirit. In 1 Cor. 12: 13, it is a calling into a corporate existence, becoming part of a new social network directed by the Spirit. The Spirit integrates individuals into a community-oriented mission.

3. Edifying Mission

(Holy Spirit in Teaching)

The Spirit showed the church how to proceed in proclaiming the gospel and how not to. In Paul’s view the reality of God in the world is the reality of the Spirit. God is always the sources of the spirit that manifests the life-giving power of the creator

66 Souvenir

(1 Cor. 2: 12-16; Eph. 3: 4-5). In this expression the Spirit seems to be the source of power for interpretation (Jn. 14: 26). Paul is convinced that God’s revelation must come through the Spirit, this is the essence of his proclamation of the gospel and also it is the key to his approach to the teaching ministry. Christians who are taught by the Spirit are able to interpret spiritual truth, it demonstrates the Spirit’s teaching ministry.

CoNCLuSIoN

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit in Christ the Messiah and empowered His earthly ministry. The Holy Spirit guarantees the power of life in the Church, and ensures the presence of the God in the world. The power of the Holy Spirit for the New Testament church is a guarantee of the coming Kingdom and eschatological hope. With the power of Holy Spirit, believers are empowered for missions to follow His directions which will lead to the fulfilment of the Great Commission.

The upside-down Kingdom of God

The "upside-Down Kingdom of God" is a concept found in Christian teachings, particularly in the New Testament, that challenges conventional values and societal norms. This kingdom turns the world’s expectations on their head, where the last are first, the humble are exalted, and the meek inherit the earth.

INvERSIoN oF vALuES

Jesus' teachings, such as the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-12), highlight this inversion. He blesses the poor in spirit, those who mourn, and the meek, rather than the rich and powerful. This redefines what it means to be

blessed in God's eyes.

SERvANT LEADERSHIP

In the upside-Down Kingdom, greatness is measured by one's willingness to serve others. Jesus exemplified this, teaching that "whoever wants to become great among

ethAn DAnieL

you must be your servant" (Matthew 20:26). True leadership is marked by humility and service.

LovE FoR ENEMIES

Jesus' command to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44) is a central tenet. This radical love promotes peace and reconciliation, breaking the cycle of hatred and revenge.

THE FIRST SHALL BE LAST

In the parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16), Jesus illustrates that "the last will be first, and the first will be last." This principle emphasizes God's grace and generosity over human notions of fairness and merit.

CoNCLuSIoN

The upside-Down Kingdom of God calls for a transformative way of living that prioritizes humility, service, love, and grace. It invites believers to embody these values, turning the world upside down in alignment with Jesus' radical teachings.

'BeaT i T udeS'

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The Beatitudes, tell us about what God thinks is important and special. They show us that God likes it when we're humble, kind, fair, and peaceful. Even though the world may say being strong or rich is most important, God's way is different. He loves everyone and wants us to treat each other well, no matter who they are.

THE

uPSIDE-DowN kINGDoM

In the Christian world, it was identified that there were two separate worlds. The Earth, and a world called “The upside-Down Kingdom”. Now I’m not talking about the upside Down from Stranger Things or any other Sci-Fi movie, I’m talking about a world where the “last will be first and the first, last” (Matthew 20:16). So, what is this upside-Down Kingdom?

wHAT IS THE uPSIDE-DowN kINGDoM?

This kingdom is known to be the opposite of

the world we are in right now. How may these worlds be different? The upside-Down kingdom is also known as Heaven, which makes sense. It is a world where God accepts anyone and I’m talking about the people who are despised in our world, people like the weak, poor, blind, sick, etc. We can see how this is true throughout the journey of Jesus in the bible. When He healed a blind man, raised Lazarus from death and fed the 5000, were some of the miracles he performed while travelling. We can see one thing in common with the people Jesus healed and helped. Back in the day, in Jerusalem, people who were sick or unwell were seen as “unclean” and would receive no help from the community. However, Jesus showed us a glimpse of the upside-Down kingdom by healing and walking with those who have the least power. Not only did Jesus heal the weak people, but he also helped the people who were weak in faith, someone known as Zacchaeus.

THE SToRY oF ZACCHAEuS

Of course, Zacchaeus is a famous bible story with a song created for children to memorise the story better. We know that he was a tax collector and

was hated by his people for his cheating. Here’s what we didn’t know, his people also hated Zacchaeus since he was a traitor to his nation. Why? Well, he was collecting tax for the Roman Oppressors and not for the Jews. We also know he wasn’t poor, so why did Jesus visit him? Let’s recollect the story. The story happens in the book of Luke when Jesus was passing through Jericho. There was soon a crowd when the people there found out Jesus was coming. This is where Zacchaeus comes in. Let’s say Zacchaeus was prominent for his short height, he couldn’t see Jesus. He, therefore, climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus. When Jesus “noticed” he called Zacchaeus down and offered to have a meal at Zacchaeus' house. Yes, I put the speech marks deliberately and that's because it was almost too quick for Jesus to notice Zacchaeus. It was as if Jesus passed Jericho knowing that Zacchaeus was there.

“We check social media regularly to see what we’ve missed. We slow down and investigate when we see a crowd. Our nature is to wonder what people are looking at and talking about and to get involved ourselves.” Is how Jason Soroski compared this scene of the crowd with Jesus. Just like we have paparazzi or photographers, there were followers of Jesus back then. But how does this have a line separating the upside-Down Kingdom and the World of Reality?

uNRAvELLING THE LINE BETwEEN THE woRLDS

This bible passage portrays the idea that we don’t have to gain Jesus’ attention, we already have his attention. Just like Zacchaeus, we too are poor in heart and de-

cide to take more from people than intended. Having Jesus’ attention also means that we have many chances to be made pure again and that he is always ready to accept and heal us.

The opposition of the worlds also tells a major difference in the stories. Take this example, what would a crown look like in the real world? A gold crown with gemstones is presented on a red pillow to a member of the Royal Family. However, in the upside-Down Kingdom, the crown is built of thorns and is kept on the head of our only Lord, Jesus Christ, who bears pain to wash our sins away. “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” Was the famous verse in Luke 19:10 that told us why Jesus came to Earth. So, when do you think, Jesus is coming to your home.

Nickname: PAuL

Role in the Bible: Paul, also known as Saul of Tarsus, played a pivotal role in the Bible as a leading apostle who spread christianity among the gentiles.

BACkGRouND

Paul, originally named Saul, was born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia (modern-day Turkey). He was a Roman citizen by birth and a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin. Educated as a Pharisee under the renowned teacher Gamaliel, Saul was initially a zealous persecutor of Christians. His life transformed dramatically after a profound spiritual experience on the road to Damascus, where he encountered the risen Christ.

Souvenir

Following his conversion, he became known as Paul and dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel, establishing churches, and writing letters that form a significant portion of the New Testament.

uPSIDE DowN kINGDoM

Paul is an example of God's upside-down kingdom because, despite starting as a fierce persecutor of Christians, he became one of the most influential apostles of Christ. His dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus, where he was transformed from a zealous Pharisee to a dedicated missionary, embodies the paradoxical nature of God's kingdom where the last become first and the greatest serve. Through Paul, God demonstrated that anyone, regardless of their past, can be radically changed and used for His purposes, emphasizing the kingdom's values of grace, redemption, and the unexpected elevation of the humble.

MoTIvATIoNS

Paul's motivations, as depicted in the Bible, stemmed from his divine calling following a dramatic encounter with the risen Christ on the road to Damascus. This experience instilled in him a profound sense of mission to preach the Gospel, especially to the Gentiles. Driven by his deep love for Christ and a desire for the salvation of others, Paul dedicated his life to spreading the Christian message. He was committed to doctrinal purity and tirelessly defended the Gospel against false teachings, while also striving to unify the diverse early Christian communities. These intertwined motivations fueled his extensive missionary work, travels, and writings, which significantly shaped early Christianity.

Role in Bible: “Man after my heart, who will carry out all my wishes.” -Acts 13:22

BACkGRouND

King David, initially a shepherd boy from Bethlehem, rose to prominence in ancient Israel. He was the youngest son of Jesse and became renowned for his bravery, notably defeating the giant Goliath with a slingshot. David's deep faith, musical talent, and poetic contributions, such as the Psalms, endeared him to God. Anointed by the prophet Samuel, David eventually became the second king of Israel. Despite his human flaws and sins, David's heartfelt repentance and unwavering devotion to God earned him the title "a man after God’s own heart". His complex character, combining humility, courage, and sincere worship, made him a beloved figure in biblical history.

uPSIDE DowN kINGDoM

King David is an example of God's upside-Down Kingdom because his life illustrates how God values humility, repentance, and faith over worldly status and perfection. As a young shepherd boy, David defeated the giant Goliath through the power of God, despite the people's judgments and disbelief in his abilities. This victory showcased that God's strength is made perfect in weakness, overturning

societal expectations that favored physical might and stature. Even with significant moral failings later in life, David's sincere repentance and heartfelt prayers, like Psalm 51, exemplify the Kingdom's values of grace and redemption. His leadership, marked by service, worship, and a deep desire to honor God, further demonstrates how God's Kingdom prioritizes a heart devoted to Him over conventional measures of power and success.

MoTIvATIoNS

King David's motivation stemmed from his deep faith and love for God, as well as his understanding of God's mercy and

righteousness. Despite his significant moral failings, such as his adultery with Bathsheba and the orchestration of her husband uriah's death, David showed sincere repentance and sought God's forgiveness. His heartfelt confessions, reflect his genuine remorse and desire to align his life with God's will. David's commitment to building a strong, unified Israel and his efforts to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem also demonstrated his dedication to honoring and glorifying God. His life was marked by a continual striving to embody the principles and values that pleased God, even in the face of his own weaknesses.

Beatitudes

TheBeatitudes, found in Matthew 5:312, present a series of blessings that, on the surface, appear paradoxical. They illustrate the values of what is often referred to as the "upside-down kingdom," where Jesus upends conventional expectations of power and success.

1. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

This Beatitude highlights the blessedness of recognizing one's spiritual poverty. In a world that often prizes self-sufficiency and strength, Jesus values humility and the acknowledgment of our need for God. The "poor in spirit" are those who are aware of their own limitations and dependence on divine grace. This upside-down perspective values spiritual humility over pride and self-reliance, promising the kingdom of heaven to those who recognize their need for God.

2. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

Here, Jesus comforts those who experience sorrow and loss, offering a promise of divine comfort. Mourning, typically associated with pain and weakness, is presented as a state that leads to blessing. This Beatitude inverts the worldly understanding of happiness by suggesting that true comfort and consolation come from God, not from avoiding grief. It implies that through mourning, individuals can experience a deeper connection with God and receive His solace.

78 Souvenir

3. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

Meekness, often misunderstood as weakness, is extolled as a virtue in Jesus' upside-down kingdom. The meek are those who are gentle, patient, and humble, contrasting sharply with the world's admiration for the aggressive and the assertive. By promising the meek that they will inherit the earth, Jesus subverts the typical power structures, suggesting that true strength lies in gentleness and humility, not in dominance or coercion.

4. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied."

This Beatitude praises those who earnestly desire justice and righteousness. In a world that frequently rewards compromise and moral ambiguity, Jesus commends a deep, unrelenting longing for what is right. The promise of satisfaction implies that this hunger and thirst will be fulfilled, not by earthly standards, but by divine intervention. It turns the conventional pursuit of satisfaction—through wealth, power,

or pleasure—on its head, suggesting that true fulfillment comes from a righteous life aligned with God's will.

5. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy."

Mercy involves showing compassion and forgiveness to others. Those who are merciful reflect God's own nature, and in doing so, they will also receive mercy from Him. This reciprocal relationship underscores the importance of being kind-hearted and forgiving.

6. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

Purity of heart means having a sincere and devoted heart towards God. It involves inner purity, honesty, and integrity. The

promise of seeing God is both a present spiritual reality and a future hope, where those with pure hearts will experience God's presence fully.

7. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God."

Peacemakers actively seek to reconcile and bring harmony in relationships and society. By bringing peace, they reflect God's character and His desire for unity and love among His creation. Being called children of God signifies a close relationship with Him and supports their actions.

8. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Standing firm in one's faith and moral convictions, even in the face of opposition, is highly valued. Those who endure persecution for the sake of righteousness are promised the kingdom of heaven. This Beatitude encourages believers to remain steadfast and faithful, despite challenges.

In conclusion, the Beatitudes present a revolutionary and counter-cultural perspective on blessings and true fulfillment. They challenge conventional notions of strength, success, and happiness by emphasizing qualities such as humility, meekness, and peacemaking. The Beatitudes offer hope and comfort to those who may feel overlooked or marginalized by society, affirming the value of their attitudes and actions in the eyes of God. These timeless teachings continue to inspire reflection and transformation, reminding believers of the profound and transformative power of embracing the values of the "upside-down kingdom."

God’s Kingdom Verses Worldly

Kingdom

It's pretty amazing to think that the Bible, which pretty much everyone has a copy of, is also one of the most stolen books out there. It's like, on one hand, it's this super important book that people turn to for guidance and inspiration, and on the other hand, it's getting swiped from bookstores left and right. I guess it's because the Bible is so popular and well-known that it's an easy target for theft. People want to get their hands on it, but not everyone can afford it, so some folks end up taking it without paying. It's a strange situation, but it really shows just how much the Bible means to people, whether they're looking for spiritual direction or just want to delve into its historical and cultural significance.

The Beatitudes and the "upside down kingdom of God" concept both amazingly challenge the status quo. The Beatitudes offer a whole new perspective on blessings and happiness, turning worldly standards upside down. The upside-down kingdom of God represents a complete shift in values, where God's kingdom flips the world's values on their head. These ideas put a spotlight on humility, compassion, and spiritual wealth as crucial parts of a fulfilling life, in contrast to the pursuit of power, wealth, and self-promotion that are often celebrated in society. This link emphasizes how the Beatitudes are transformative and counter-cultural, reflecting the values of God's kingdom that often go against the world's priorities.

BLESSED ARE THoSE wHo HuNGER AND THIRST FoR RIGHTEouSNESS, FoR THEY SHALL BE SATISFIED.

We do not live in a righteous world – far from it. But, as Jesus describes in the fourth Beatitude, we are still to seek out righteousness. We are challenged to be morally responsible and seek out justice for those around us. Isaiah 33:15-17 speaks about a righteous person and how they should live. The righteous person knows that, even in a world that is unjust, there is hope. At the end of this world, God will usher in a new heaven and earth where the desire for righteousness will forever be satisfied. Remember, righteousness doesn’t always involve great acts – it often begins with the little things in our lives that are easy to ignore. Above all, cling to faith in Jesus. Keep Romans 1:17 in mind: “For in it the righteousness of God is re-

vealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith’” (ESV).

BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFuL, FoR THEY SHALL RECEIvE MERCY

The next Beatitude that Jesus talks about is to be merciful. We are called to follow the example that God has set for us – to show mercy to those around us. If we are merciful, the Bible tells us, we shall receive mercy from God. How important it is to be merciful! Recall the Parable of the unforgiving Servant from the Gospel of Matthew: Jesus paints a picture of a servant who has been forgiven a great debt by his master, but then turns around and refuses to show mercy to someone who owed him a much smaller payment. Remember God’s mercy to you and extend it to others!!

a lWaYS PraiSe God!!!

One evening my baby sister and I were playing with our toys when Mum called us for dinner. Mum set the dinner table, brought out the plates and started to fill our plates with food.

My Dad picked up my little sister and placed her in the highchair. We were about to start, and Dad was close to putting a spoonful of rice in his mouth when I told him, “Stop Dad! We forgot to pray.”

But what did we pray?

“Our Heavenly Father, thank you for the wonderful food you have blessed us with. Please bless us with good health and show us your light, Lord, for us to see you!! In Jesus name we pray, AMEN.”

Then we all started eating our dinner.

Moral of the story: Always Praise God for the wonderful blessings in your Life.

Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it".

You

will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as if problems followed each other. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed them on a high fire. When they came to the boil she placed a carrot in one pot, in the second she placed an egg, and in the last she placed coffee powder. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrot out and placed it in a bowl. She pulled the egg out and placed it in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what do you see."

"Carrot, egg, and coffee," she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrot. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to peel the egg. The hardboiled egg held firm. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.

88 Souvenir

The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity. Boiling water. Each reacted differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, boiling water had softened it. The eggshell had become fragile, but its inside was hard. The coffee, however, was unique. After it was hit with boiling water, it had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or coffee?“’

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt, and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Will a tragedy, a personal

breakup, a financial setback or some other trial make me hardhearted and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough? Or am I like the coffee that releases the aroma and flavour to change the hot water, the very thing that brings the pain. If you are like coffee, when things are at their worst you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are at their greatest you should elevate yourself to another level?.

How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or coffee?

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

May we all be COFFEE!

Who’s the Goose?

Sunny from Singapore was feeling great, walking to the tube station on a lovely spring morning. He was doing Law in London, third year; in his satchel he had two thick books on tort law and related matters. He tilted his head to catch the sun and let the warmth run through his veins after a particularly cold winter. Then he heard voices in the near distance, happy people in the first flash of summer. He quickened his pace and discovered a fun fair was swinging into action. He had never seen one in the English countryside. There were bottles and jars of jams and pickled fruits, the traditional coconut shy and, ah, something new to Sunny, a game with a goose as the prize. A farmer had brought the bird to raise funds for the local All Souls Church. The deal was that, for five shillings, the farmer offered five reasonable sized plastic rings for anyone to throw and put one on the goose’s neck. Sunny fell for it and the wonder was that the fourth ring caught the goose. He stuffed the goose inside his jacket and moved off quickly. He was more than elated, he was walking on air. He was still smiling and thinking of the joy and happiness he would create at home in Singapore when he reported his lucky break. About an hour into his two-

hour train ride a loud and well inebriated man got into the carriage. He sat at the far end to where Sunny was. The man could see the goose’s head peeking up from Sunny’s jacket and he was not happy. He cursed and swore at everything. He sang a couple of lines of Danny Boy and reverted to filthy language. The cabin became crowded and noisy. Then to everybody’s relief the man dozed off. Suddenly he leapt up with a question: “Where are you taking this fatso?”

Sunny felt obliged to say something. He started, “Well actually . . .”

His inquisitor raised his hand and responded, mockingly, “Well actually . . .”

The compartment fell silent. Oppressive, lacerating silence.

The man repeated his question, and Sunny again started, “Well actually . . .”

The man said loudly, “I am talking to the goose.”

uproar. Shouting, whistling, bedlam.

Without saying another word, Sunny walked to the man and thrust the goose into his hands. More shouting and guffaws. Sunny waited at the door and he was out like a flash. Tell that to the family. They will all say, in one voice, “Loser!”

Sunny was not going to call his family that week, he needed time to process all the things that had happened to him. The brute who now owned his goose can explain to the police where he got it from. Stolen property came to Sunny’s legal mind.

How would you cope if you were in Sunny’s shoes?

Next time you are in church and at the conclusion of the service the Achen raises his hand and utters those immortal words of comfort, “The peace of God that passeth all understanding . . .”

Listen carefully. Souvenir
