Three Steps to Success Jolly Phonics is split into 3 main steps, covering the main letter sounds, alternative spellings and tricky words, and activities for reading and handwriting practice. Each step provides progressive daily sessions and practical tips for teachers.

3 Blending Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read new words.

Step 1 Introduces the main letter sounds

The letter sounds

Focuses on the 5 key skills of Jolly Phonics for teaching reading and writing: the letter sounds, letter formation, blending, segmenting, and tricky words.

Children are taught the main letter sounds.

This includes the sounds made by the alphabet letters and by digraphs, such as <sh>, <th>, <ai>, and <ue>.

4 Identifying the sounds in words Children learn to segment words, a key skill for writing.

Step 2 Builds on the initial teaching in Step 1 Revises and consolidates the learning in Step 1, with weekly extension topics. Step 2 also introduces alternative vowel spellings, capital letters and the alphabet, new tricky words, and guided writing activities.

2 Letter formation Children learn how to form and write the letters through a variety of multi-sensory methods.

5 Tricky words Children are taught to read and write 72 high-frequency words by learning the ‘tricky’ parts of the spelling.

Phonics Course Content

Literacy Course Content

Module 1 Covers the history of literacy teaching and evaluates the various methods used to teach reading and writing over the years.

Module 1 Covers the history of grammar and an introduction to the Literacy programme.

Module 2 Introduces Jolly Phonics and explains the five basic skills that are taught in the programme.

Module 3 Gives practical teaching advice and guidance.

Explains how the five skills can be incorporated into daily lessons and the pace of teaching.

Module 4 Discusses tried-and-tested techniques that can be used for teaching children that are struggling.

Module 5 Looks at research studies which have examined the various methods used to teach literacy.

Module 2 Introduces grammar and punctuation concepts taught in the 6-year programme. Topics include sentences, parts of speech, parsing and punctuation.

Module 3 Looks at grammar and writing skills. Topics include dictionary skills, antonyms, synonyms, homophones, root words, prefixes, suffixes, syllables and writing structure.

Module 4 Investigates spelling, covering strategies, digraphs, trigraphs, diphthongs, vowels, consonants, common spelling patterns and rules.

Module 5 Provides a thorough overview of the 6-year Literacy programme and useful resources.
