MESSAGE from THE EDITOR I hope everyone had a season filled with joy, reflection, and meaningful moments during the holiday season. As we turn the page to a new year, January arrives with special significance—not just because it marks a fresh beginning, but because it is National Mentoring Month, a value the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland practice and live out every month of the year.

Mentoring is not something we turn on and off with the calendar. It is who we are. It is embedded in our mission, reflected in our programs, and demonstrated through the consistent presence of men who choose to invest their time, wisdom, and hearts into the lives of young people. National Mentoring Month simply gives us a moment to pause and shine a light on work that has been shaping lives long before it was formally recognized.

As I reflect on the importance of mentorship, I am especially grateful for my own foundation. I was fortunate to have a father who was present—one who mentored me, guided me, and modeled what responsibility, discipline, and integrity look like in action. His influence taught me the value of showing up, making sound decisions, and understanding that leadership begins at home. Those early lessons continue to shape who I am today and how I choose to serve others.

Not every young person has that kind of guidance, and that reality makes the work of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland even more vital. Through mentorship, we fill gaps, create opportunities, and offer young men the support many of us were blessed to receive. We become examples of what is possible and reminders of what accountability and compassion look like when practiced consistently.

This month, as we celebrate National Mentoring Month, let us recommit ourselves to the responsibility that comes with influence. Whether as mentors, leaders, partners, or supporters, each of us plays a role in shaping the next generation. The impact of mentorship is lasting, and the legacy we build today will be carried forward tomorrow.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our mission and for believing in the power of mentorship.

Letter from the Chairman As we begin our transition into the new year, it doesn’t magically change who we are or the work in front of us. January isn’t a reset button. It’s a time for evaluation. A moment to decide whether we’re willing to move forward with more courage, more honesty, and more imagination than before.

The year ahead calls for boldness. Big steps. Thoughtful risks. The kind of creativity that refuses to accept “this is how it’s always been done” as an answer. Growth, real growth, rarely happens inside comfort zones, and it never happens by accident.

Growth also demands teamwork in the truest sense. Titles matter less than trust. Egos slow progress; shared purpose accelerates it.

When everyone shows up willing to listen, contribute, and support one another, momentum follows. No one person carries this alone, nor should they, and no one gets credit alone either.

At the center of all of this are the young people we serve. Our responsibility is to create opportunity, guidance, and accountability: but their responsibility matters too. Growth is not something done to them; it’s something they must willingly participate in. We challenge them to own their choices, their effort, and their future, knowing they are capable of more than they sometimes believe. It’s up to us to find innovative ways to engage, inspire and motivate them.

So as we move forward, let’s do it with intention. Fearless in vision. Creative in approach.

Unified in purpose. Not because the year is new, but because the work is too important to stand still. What is it that’s said about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?

WHO WE ARE The 100 Black Men of America, Inc., is not just a leading African-American-led mentoring organization, but a beacon of hope for the African American community. We believe that every African American should have the ability to create the life they’ve always wanted, and that’s what The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is making possible.

Our commitment is unwavering. We strive to personify the type of people our children will look up to and emulate, embracing our immense responsibility to our mentees and our communities. We provide these children another choice by being around like-minded individuals with similar aspirations and goals, ensuring a brighter future for African American youth.

As The Network of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. has expanded, we have welcomed more companies and developed new programs to better serve our mission. Our focus areas, known as the 100’s Four For The Future, include mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment. These areas guide our efforts to provide the education and empowerment necessary to transform the lives of the children we serve.

Through the expansion, we’ve created 100 Black Men Chapters that deliver unique programs that address specific needs in local communities.

Through 57 years of testing, we’ve created the 100’s successful model—a proven blueprint for mentoring and developing young people into future leaders by surrounding them with a positive network and giving them the opportunity that they may not have thought was possible.

The History of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. The history of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland is a testament to the power of vision and collaboration. It all began with a pivotal moment when Michael Nelson, a visionary leader, convened a historic meeting. This gathering brought together individuals who represented powerful political factions, including Congressman Louis Stokes, former City Council President George Forbes, and the man who defeated George for Mayor, Michael R. White. The location of this momentous meeting was kept a secret until the day of the event, adding to its intrigue and significance. This history is not just a story, but a legacy that has shaped the community and inspired generations to come.

A date was set, and Nelson invited a number of his friends, including Larry Hines, Gregory Clifford, Curtis Griggs, Tony Smith, Luther Towers, and Julius Singleton, along with Stokes’ rep, Ron Adrine, Forbes’ rep, Daryl Fields, and White rep, Nate Gray, to meet with Chairman Dortch and Roosevelt Adams. The meeting was held at the now-closed Eloise’s Restaurant, located on East 79th Street and Carnegie. The National Headquarters approved Cleveland to be established in 1997 and recognized as an entirely fledged chapter.

These guys were familiar with the 100 through business, political, or family connections. After listening to the very impressive Thomas Dortch and engaging in approximately an hour of discussion, the decision was made to incorporate formally, establish a dues structure of $250 annually, and begin recruiting members. In 1997, the 100 Black Men of Cleveland was established.

The first significant event was a rollout at the Cleveland Clinic, where over 90 men committed to join the cause, with about 70 of them paying their dues. Mayor Michael R. White, a staunch supporter, pledged to purchase 100 copies of the renowned motivational speaker George Fraser’s book, ‘Success Runs in Our Race,’ for each member. George Frazer, who graced the opening event with his presence, generously autographed each member’s copy, symbolizing the dedication and support of the early members.

The next major event was a fundraising gala featuring the late Phylis Hyman, a nationally known recording artist. The event was orchestrated by the dynamic Richard Johnson, a significant internet influencer in today’s social media world. Held at the prestigious Marriott Hotel in Cleveland, the gala was not just a success but a resounding triumph, underscoring the impact of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland in the community.

The funds raised by that first gala supported the Cleveland chapter’s version of the National 100’s Four For The Future programs: Health/Wellness, Economic Development, Education, and Mentoring. Larry Hines was our first Program Director, assisted by Curtis (Griggs). The parentheses are intentional; that’s how Curtis spelled his last name.

The 100 would continue to grow its brand in Cleveland. The group coordinated mentoring programs in numerous schools, including Daniel E. Morgan Elementary School, Cleveland East Senior High School, John F. Kennedy Senior High School, East Cleveland Shaw Senior High School, Mound, and Warrensville Heights Senior High School. The 100 also held a Saturday morning mentoring program at its offices in Cleveland’s Shaker Square complex. The numerous programs included a reading program at Daniel E Morgan and a stock market competition at East High School. One of the highlights of our plan was the success of our East High Stock Market Challenge team, which traveled to Atlanta and took on some of the nation’s most prominent schools, finishing a highly respectable 3rd out of the scores of schools that competed.

In 2022, a class of 22 new members joined, a testament to the organization’s continued growth and influence.

As we look forward to 2023, we celebrate twenty-five years of impactful service. After seven chairpersons and numerous galas, the chapter continues to thrive, mentoring men in schools such as Wade Park and the Kenneth Clement Boys Leadership Academy, among others. Our journey is marked by numerous achievements, from successful galas to impactful mentoring programs, all of which contribute to the betterment of our community.

2024 under the dynamic new leadership of Chairman Gregory Lockhart and Vice Chairman James W. Wade III, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland proudly re-instated the impactful Saturday Academy at Cuyahoga Community College’s Eastern Campus. This revitalized program has become a cornerstone of our mission, offering young men a safe, structured, and inspiring environment to learn, grow, and lead.

Alongside its return, we also introduced a variety of innovative new programs and engaging activities designed to broaden opportunities, strengthen mentorship, and further empower the next generation of leaders.

2025 as we look to the future, we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. With new Leadership and a renewed commitment to our mission, we are ready to take on the challenges of the next decade. We look forward to continuing to make a powerful impact, helping us live out our mission of mentoring, educating, and empowering the next generation.

This year, we accomplishedso much with the membership giving so much of their time to make the chapter great: We expanded and enriched our Saturday Academy, offering transformative sessions in mentoring, health & wellness, economic empowerment, and Education. This growth is a testament to our commitment to providing comprehensive support and guidance to our mentees, and we are excited about the positive impact this will have on their lives.

Launched Well Connected on Wednesday, bringing families and mentees together monthly for fitness, wellness, and fellowship. Hosted signature community events, including the Drive Cleveland Golf Outing, Family Picnic, and Walk a Mile with a Child. Honored outstanding leaders and partners at our Sponsor & Honoree Reception and prepared for our 2025 Scholarship & Awards Gala: Champions of Change.

Strengthened collaborations with various community partners, expanding opportunities for and to our youth in sports, STEM, financial literacy, and college readiness. Our STEM students won second place at the 100 Black Men National Conference in New Orleans.

We continued to uplift the voices and celebrate the achievements of our community through Real Men Magazine, expanding our platform as a powerful tool for storytelling and inspiration. Throughout 2025, we demonstrated the very essence of true brotherhood, leadership, and service. This year stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when we come together, united by purpose and driven by progress.

What It Means to Be a Mentor for 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland Inc. Cleveland, Ohio, faces significant socioeconomic challenges, including high poverty rates, limited access to quality education, and systemic barriers that disproportionately affect young Black males.

Mentorship provides stability, guidance, and hope—helping teens navigate these challenges and envision a future beyond their immediate circumstances.

In a city where community engagement and leadership are vital, the role of a mentor within 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland Inc. stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment.

This nationally recognized organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life within communities and enhancing educational and economic opportunities for African American youth. But what does it truly mean to be a mentor in this impactful movement?

At its core, mentorship with 100 Black Men is about commitment, guidance, and transformation. Mentors serve as role models, advocates, and trusted advisors for young men navigating life’s challenges. They provide more than advice; they offer a roadmap for success grounded in the organization’s four pillars: Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness, and Economic Empowerment.

Being a mentor means investing time and energy into building authentic relationships.

It’s about listening, understanding, and helping mentees develop confidence and resilience.

Mentors often assist with academic support, career planning, and life skills, ensuring that young men are equipped to thrive in school, work, and society.

Mentors also open doors. Through networking, exposure to professional environments, and leadership development programs, they help mentees envision possibilities beyond their immediate circumstances. This proactive approach fosters a sense of purpose and ambition.

Mentorship is not a one-way street. Mentors gain as much as they give, learning from the experiences and perspectives of the youth they guide. It strengthens community bonds and reinforces the principle that success is a shared responsibility.

January is National Mentoring Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the powerful role mentorship plays in shaping young lives and strengthening communities. While the national observance officially launched in 2022, the 100 Black Men of America, Inc.—the largest Black mentoring organization in the nation—has been doing this work effectively for decades. For the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., mentoring is not a campaign or a moment; it is the foundation of the organization’s mission and its most enduring commitment.

Mentoring relationships are a core component of healthy human development. At critical moments in a young person’s life, mentors provide guidance, encouragement, and stability—helping youth develop essential life skills, expand opportunities, and navigate challenges as they transition into adulthood.

A strong mentoring relationship can fill gaps in a young person’s support system, offering reassurance, accountability, and a sense of belonging that many youth otherwise lack.

The impact of mentoring extends far beyond individual growth. Mentorship is also a cornerstone of healthy, vibrant communities.

Communities that prioritize mentoring are places where people care for one another, where divisions and disparities are addressed collaboratively, and where every individual’s potential is nurtured. In these environments, youth are not only supported but also empowered to contribute positively to their families, schools, and neighborhoods. Strong mentoring cultures create safer, more connected communities—replacing isolation and disconnection with collective responsibility and shared purpose.

Despite its proven importance, access to mentoring remains uneven across the nation.

Nearly 40 percent of young people grow up without ever having a mentor. For these youth, the absence of consistent guidance can limit exposure to positive role models, reduce access to opportunities, and make the path to

adulthood more uncertain. Many communities— particularly those facing economic and social challenges—have yet to fully maximize the mentoring support available to young people.

Closing this gap requires intentional, sustained effort and organizations that understand the long-term value of mentorship.

The benefits of mentoring do not end in childhood or adolescence. Research shows that the impact of mentorship extends well into adulthood. Seventy-five percent of Americans who had a mentor growing up say that relationship was a major contributor to their success in life. This powerful statistic reinforces what mentoring organizations have long understood: mentorship is not a temporary intervention, but a lifelong influence that shapes confidence, decision-making, and leadership long after the formal relationship ends.

The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. has embraced this truth since its founding in 1997. Mentoring has always been the cornerstone of the organization’s mission and the driving force behind its work throughout the community. As part of the national 100 Black Men of America, Inc., the Greater Cleveland chapter focuses its efforts through the organization’s Four Pillars: Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness, and Economic Empowerment—each reinforcing the belief that whole development leads to lasting success.

For the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, mentoring is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It is built on authentic relationships, consistency, and trust. Mentors commit to showing up—not just for scheduled programs, but as reliable role models who lead by example. Through initiatives such as Saturday Academy, youth are exposed to structured learning environments that extend beyond traditional classrooms.

Sessions emphasize academic support, financial literacy, health awareness, career exploration, STEM activities, and essential life skills that prepare young men for long-term success.

Experiential learning plays an equally important role. Youth participate in activities that challenge them physically, mentally, and socially. From structured fitness programs and rowing experiences on Lake Erie to community service projects and life-saving AED training, mentees gain practical skills while building confidence and resilience. These experiences reinforce lessons in teamwork, discipline, and perseverance—qualities essential for leadership in adulthood.

The organization’s mentoring philosophy is grounded in a simple but powerful belief: “What They See Is What They’ll Be.” By surrounding young people with men who model integrity, professionalism, and service, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland helps youth visualize what responsible leadership looks like in real life. Mentors share their experiences, hold youth accountable, and set clear expectations—creating an environment where growth is both expected and supported.

The impact of this work extends well beyond individual mentees. Families gain reassurance knowing their children are supported by caring, consistent role models. Schools and community partners benefit from increased engagement and collaboration. Over time, the community sees young men emerge who are better prepared to lead, serve, and contribute positively. The work of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland demonstrates what is possible when mentorship is treated as a long-term investment rather than a short-term program. By guiding youth today, the organization is building the foundation for stronger families, more engaged citizens, and healthier communities tomorrow.

In celebrating National Mentoring Month, we celebrate potential—the potential of young people to grow, lead, and succeed when given the guidance they deserve. Through its unwavering commitment since 1997, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland continues to prove that when youth are supported through mentorship, everyone benefits. Happier, healthier youth truly lead to happier, healthier communities.

Being a mentee in the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland is more than an opportunity—it is a life-changing experience. It is about discovering who you are within a community intentionally designed to guide, support, and elevate young Black men toward greatness. This program is a living example of what happens when Black men come together with purpose, discipline, and a genuine commitment to lifting the next generation. For me, being a mentee means being seen, supported, challenged, and shaped into the kind of man who will one day do the same for others.

At its core, the 100 Black Men is grounded in the powerful conviction that “What They See Is What They’ll Be.” For young men like myself, that statement is not just a motto—it is a standard we live by. Growing up, positive male role models are not always easy to find, and when that presence is missing, it can leave a young man questioning who he can become or what his future might hold. The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland fills that gap with intention and consistency.

Through this program, we are surrounded by Black men who embody excellence— professionals, leaders, fathers, entrepreneurs, and community builders who lead by example. They are living proof of what is possible. They show us what strength paired with humility looks like, what leadership grounded in compassion looks like, and what success achieved without losing your identity looks like. Seeing these men week after week changes the way we see ourselves and the way we imagine our future.

Building Leaders for the Next Generation Leadership does not happen by accident. It is cultivated through intention, example, and unwavering commitment. For many young men, the journey to leadership begins with exposure. Exposure to men who look like them, speak honestly with them, and show them what is possible beyond their current circumstances. service. They demonstrate that leadership is not defined by titles or status, but by character, accountability, and a willingness to uplift others.

Through programs such as Saturday Academy, youth are introduced to structured environments where learning extends beyond textbooks.

Mentors engage students in discussions on life skills, goal-setting, financial literacy, health and wellness, and academic excellence. These sessions create safe spaces where young men can ask questions, share concerns, and gain clarity about their futures. More importantly, they learn that leadership starts with selfdiscipline, respect, and making responsible choices—even when no one is watching.

One of the most powerful aspects of mentorship is consistency. Showing up week after week sends a clear message: you matter.

Equally important is the emphasis on service.

Tomorrow’s leaders must understand that leadership is about giving back. By participating in community initiatives, youth witness firsthand the impact of collective effort. They learn that true leadership is measured not by personal gain but by the positive difference one makes in others’ lives. This mindset instills a sense of responsibility to family, community, and future generations.

The mentors themselves continue to grow alongside their mentees. Guiding youth requires reflection, patience, and humility. Many mentors credit the organization with sharpening their own leadership skills, reminding them that influence carries responsibility. This reciprocal relationship strengthens the brotherhood and reinforces the belief that leadership is a lifelong journey.

As young men mature within the program, the transformation becomes evident. Confidence replaces doubt. Goals become clearer.

Voices grow stronger. Youth begin to lead by example—whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, or within their peer groups. These are the early signs of tomorrow’s leaders taking shape today.

When mentors invest their time, energy, and wisdom, they help young people develop trust and self-belief. That trust becomes the foundation upon which leadership is built. Youth begin to see themselves not as products of limitation, but as individuals with potential and purpose.

Leadership development also occurs through experience. The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland intentionally exposes mentees to opportunities that broaden their worldview.

From hands-on STEM projects and fitness initiatives to community service activities and career exploration, young men are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones. These experiences teach teamwork, resilience, communication, and problem-solving—essential qualities of effective leadership.

Guiding today’s youth toward tomorrow’s leadership is not a short-term effort. It is a long-term investment in the future of Cleveland and beyond. The work of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland ensures that young men are not left to navigate life alone. Instead, they are supported, challenged, and inspired by mentors who believe in their potential.

As the organization continues its mission, one truth remains clear: when young people are guided with purpose, they rise with confidence.

The Impact of the School to Prison Pipeline on Black Boys While much of American history is being re-written to reflect stories of pleasant, indentured servitude for person of color that were forced into chattel slavery by the Dutch in the 1600’s, the roots of the ‘American Dream’ lie in the goals and aspirations of the first European settlers and colonizers. Most of these people came to the North American continent to escape tyranny, religious and political persecution, or poverty unlike the Black Diaspora, more commonly known as the Transatlantic Slave Trade (largest driver, forcibly moving millions of Africans to America).

However, in 1776, most 4th graders have learned that the founders of the Declaration of Independence claimed that: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These lines have often been cited by groups seeking equal standing in American society. While the idea of the American Dream may have originated well before 1776, the phrase itself was coined by American businessman and historian James Truslow Adams in his 1931 book, The Epic of America.

That work defines the past and future of the American Dream, which, according to Adams, the American Dream is about aspiring to be one’s best self and to rise above the station one was born into. It is not about simply acquiring wealth and material possessions.

In the summer of 1946, George Dorsey, a World War II veteran who had served tours in North Africa and the Pacific theater, was easing back into post-war life after five years in the Army.

He was working as a sharecropper in Walton County, Georgia, after returning home, and living with his wife, Mae. On July 25, just 10 months after Dorsey came home, a mob of white men swarmed a car that contained Dorsey and Mae, as well as Dorsey’s sister and brotherin-law. Enraged by a report that Dorsey’s brother-in-law, Roger Malcom, had stabbed a white man, the mob eventually pulled both couples from the car, beat them, and shot them more than 60 times.

Although people witnessed the lynching, and although the men in the mob didn’t hide their faces, the police made no arrests. The crime is still officially unsolved today. Parents want their children to experience the American Dream and do better than they have done. They want them to experience a comfortable lifestyle, happiness, prosperity, safety, education and unlimited potential for whatever they desire. This experience exists within the Black community as well.

However, America is experiencing a phenomenon that is impacting the lives and homes of African Americans at an unimaginable rate. The school-to-prison pipeline is a troubling

trend that disproportionately affects Black boys, funneling them from educational environments into the criminal justice system due to systemic biases and harsh disciplinary policies.

The school-to-prison pipeline describes a system that punishes instead of nurtures, isolates instead of supports, and ultimately pushes students, especially Black boys, from classrooms into courtrooms. Zerotolerance policies, implicit bias, and a lack of culturally responsive practices have created environments where normal childhood behavior is criminalized when exhibited by Black boys. A Black boy showing frustration may be labeled “aggressive.” A student struggling academically may be labeled “defiant” or “lazy.” Over time, these labels shape how educators interact with students and how students view themselves.

Instead of being given a chance to learn from their mistakes, many Black students are pushed out of the classroom and into the juvenile justice system, starting them on a path toward incarceration.

Another factor is the presence of law enforcement, such as school resource officers, in schools with high minority populations.

These officers are often tasked with maintaining safety, but in practice, they tend to criminalize normal student behavior. For Black students, this can mean being arrested for incidents that could be handled with a conversation or mediation. The over-policing of Black students creates a hostile school environment where they are more likely to be treated as criminals rather than as children who deserve support and education. The impact of the school-to-prison pipeline is far-reaching. Black children who are suspended or expelled are more likely to fall behind academically, drop out of school, and become involved in the criminal justice system.

But all is not lost as alternative connectivity may present itself. Enter 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland. As the premier mentoring authority for male students of color, an opportunity exists to change this narrative and help encourage students to a trajectory of positive engagement and educational attainment. By implementing cutting edge educational methodologies, health and wellness activities, mentoring, leadership opportunities, service projects, reflective journaling, crucial conversational dialogues, as well as mentee recognition, male students of color can realize and tap into unlimited potential. The results of an effective mentoring program such as the 100 BMOGC can provide positive social supports that help students connect with consistent adult relationships that offer mental health resources and support, especially for those facing trauma as well as individualized support that provides mentoring that can help students overcome challenges and develop a sense of purpose, which is vital for preventing negative outcomes.

By fostering a supportive environment through mentoring, schools can help students stay engaged and avoid entering the criminal justice system. It is in this way that male students of color can embrace the idea of the American Dream as opposed to an invitation to the Department of Corrections.

This not only limits their future opportunities but also reinforces the racial disparities already present in society. To break this cycle, we need to reform school disciplinary policies, address racial bias, and invest in resources that January 2026 Issue | 33

“Ending the Year with Purpose: Saturday Academy Celebrates Mentees, Mentorship, and Growth” On Saturday, December 20, 2025, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. wrapped up the year with a joyful Saturday Academy Holiday Party for parents and mentees. The celebration marked the culmination of a successful year of mentoring, learning, and personal growth, bringing families together for an afternoon of fun, fellowship, and meaningful connection.

The event was intentionally designed to give mentees a moment to relax, celebrate their accomplishments, and simply enjoy being kids. Games, bowling, pizza, and snacks filled the day, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Mentees had the opportunity to meet and greet one another, strengthen friendships, and interact with mentors outside of the traditional classroom setting. Laughter echoed throughout the venue as young men shared moments of joy, friendly competition, and camaraderie—reminding everyone in attendance that mentoring is just as much about relationships as it is about instruction.

As the celebration came to a close, each mentee received a $25 or more gift card, a gesture that added to the day’s excitement.

While the gift cards were appreciated, they represented something far deeper than a monetary value. They symbolized recognition, encouragement, and gratitude for the commitment these young men make by showing up—often early on Saturday mornings—to invest in their own development.

The Saturday Academy is one of the cornerstone programs of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland. Built on the organization’s Four Pillars—Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness, and Economic Empowerment—the Academy provides a safe, structured, and inspiring environment where young men are encouraged to grow academically, socially, and personally. Each session is thoughtfully designed to expose mentees to life skills, leadership development, academic enrichment, and positive male role models who lead by example.

Throughout the year, mentors dedicate countless hours to guiding mentees through discussions on goal setting, decision-making, responsibility, and self-confidence. The program emphasizes the belief that “What They See Is What They’ll Be,” ensuring that young men are surrounded by mentors who model integrity, discipline, and service. Over time, these consistent interactions help mentees build character, sharpen their leadership skills, and envision possibilities beyond their current circumstances.

Parents play a vital role in the success of the Saturday Academy, and the Holiday Party also served as an opportunity to celebrate families. By bringing parents and guardians into the space, the organization reinforced the importance of partnership between mentors, families, and the community. It also provided parents with a firsthand look at the supportive

environment their children are part of—one rooted in accountability, encouragement, and high expectations.

The Holiday Party was more than a yearend celebration; it was a reflection of the impact that intentional mentoring can have when consistency and care are at the center.

It reminded everyone that while the lessons learned in the classroom are essential, moments of joy, recognition, and connection are equally powerful in shaping confident, well-rounded young men.

“From Vision to Action: Glen Shumate’s Legacy of Leadership and Service” Glen Shumate has served as Gala Chair for the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. for the past two years, bringing vision, innovation, and strategic leadership to one of the organization’s signature events. With more than 25 years of leadership experience in program development, marketing, communications, and diversity, equity, and inclusion, Glen has built a distinguished career rooted in community impact and organizational excellence.

Over the past decade, Glen’s professional focus has been in the construction industry, where he has played a critical role in developing and leading programs that create access, opportunity, and pathways for youth and small businesses. His work includes the Construction Management Academy Program and the ACE Mentor Program, which emphasize STEM education, scholarships, and career pathways for young people. He has also led Business Mentor–Protégé Programs focused on capacity building, relationship development, and business growth, as well as workforce development initiatives and legislative advocacy efforts in government affairs.

Glen is actively engaged in civic, community, and industry leadership throughout Northeast Ohio. His service includes participation on numerous boards and advisory committees, including the Cuyahoga County Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Equity, the Cleveland 40 | Real Men Magazine

Lakefront Development Infrastructure Committee, and the Ohio Department of Education Career Technical Advisory Panel and Construction Advisory Council. He currently serves or has served on the boards of ACE Mentor Cleveland (as Board Chair and Executive Director), the Cleveland Restoration Society, Business Volunteers Unlimited, and the Urban League of Greater Cleveland.

In addition, Glen contributes his expertise to supplier diversity and inclusion advisory boards for major institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Public Library, Cuyahoga Community College, Kent State University, Cleveland State University, and Case Western Reserve University. His work also extends to public-sector initiatives with the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and the Northeast Ohio Union Construction Industry Program Apprenticeship Committee.

Glen has distinguished himself as an innovator in communications and marketing, public affairs, and business development, with a strong commitment to increasing engagement, improving program outcomes, and strengthening organizational communications.

His expertise in small-business capacity building and cross-sector collaboration has supported major regional development projects, including ODOT’s George V. Voinovich Inner Belt Bridge,

the Opportunity Corridor, and commercial developments such as Nucleus and Cleveland Flats East Bank, as well as numerous public infrastructure projects.

His career has also included senior leadership roles as President of Call & Post Newspapers (Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati), Vice President of the Cleveland Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Director of Community Relations for the Cleveland Guardians (formerly Cleveland Indians).

Glen studied Marketing Logistics at the University of Toledo and continued his education at Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University. He currently resides in Cleveland’s Edgewater neighborhood, where he remains deeply committed to advancing inclusive growth, workforce development, and opportunities for youth and communities across Greater Cleveland.

Being a Mentor: A Commitment to Purpose and Community

By Darian Johnson, Mentoring Chair, 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc.

Being a mentor with the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland is a true honor and a responsibility I do not take lightly. Mentoring allows me to show up for young people at some of the most important moments in their lives—when choices matter, confidence is being formed, and direction is still taking shape. It is more than offering advice; it is about presence, consistency, and care. I listen, share my experiences, and offer guidance that helps our mentees feel supported, understood, and confident in their abilities.

Many of the young men we serve face challenges that go beyond the classroom. They are navigating peer pressure, social expectations, academic demands, and questions about who they are and who they want to become. As a mentor, my role is to help them see that their circumstances do not define their future. Sometimes that means having difficult conversations. Other times it means simply being there—showing up, checking in, and letting them know someone believes in them. That belief can be life-changing.

One of the most powerful aspects of mentoring is helping mentees recognize their own potential.

Too often, young people underestimate what they are capable of achieving. Through mentoring, we help them set goals, develop discipline, and build the confidence to pursue them. Whether we are discussing academics, career paths, leadership, or life skills, the focus is always on growth. When a young man begins to see himself differently— when he realizes that he has value, purpose, and options—that is when true transformation begins.

As Mentoring Chair, I also understand that mentoring is not a one-time interaction. It is a longterm commitment rooted in trust and accountability.

Our mentees watch what we do as much as they listen to what we say. That is why leading by example is so important. We strive to model integrity, responsibility, and respect in every setting.

By doing so, we reinforce the idea that success is not just about achievement, but about character.

Mentoring also strengthens communities. When we invest in young men, we invest in the future of our neighborhoods, schools, and families. Strong mentoring relationships help create confident individuals who are prepared to give back and lead with purpose. Over time, this collective effort builds healthier, more empowered communities where young people feel supported and valued.

I am proud to be part of an organization that places mentoring at the center of its mission. The work we do is not always easy, but it is always meaningful.

Seeing a mentee grow—academically, personally, and socially—reminds me why this work matters. Every conversation, every session, and every moment of encouragement adds up.

For me, mentoring is about legacy.

It is about ensuring that the next generation has the tools, guidance, and support needed to succeed.

Through my time and leadership with the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, I remain committed to developing stronger individuals who, in turn, will help build stronger communities. Mentoring is not just something we do—it is who we are.
